Design Studios

Last week my sixth grade class and I went to JCI(Johnson Controls). After we went there, we went to the Howard Miller library. We met there with Mr. Clunder and Mrs. Deroo(City Marketer). They explained to us  our project. Our project was to design a park for a place downtown Zeeland called Heritage Square. There is a parking lot behind it with 11 spaces in it. We would design the Heritage Square and in the parking lot. We walked over to Heritage Square to look at it. It was larger than we thought! After we got back to school, we worked on reading our project brief from the City of Zeeland which explained in more detail what they wanted us to do. We highlighted important key features in it. Then we wrote them on sticky notes and posted them on a big board. From there we grouped them into similar groups and made Keynotes about each key feature. Then each group presented their Keynote and we wrote the important things they added into their Keynote on a sticky note and posted it on their Keynote that was printed out. After that we figured out what questions to include on our survey. TO BE CONTINUED…

Ancient Egyptian Museum Project

Over the past couple weeks we have been learning about Ancient Egypt and creating a museum in a group. We made a coffin for an American girl doll with a sphinx head, two posters about ancient Egypt government and writing, a Keynote and plastic food about Egypt’s food, instruments such as the flute or the rattle, and blocks for them to try to build their own temple or pyramid. My favorite part would probably have to be creating the coffin and wrapping the “mummy”. I learned their interesting way of mummifying a dead person. They put a metal pick in their nose and rattle it around so the brain breaks into little pieces and they pull it out through the nose. Then they take out different organs and put them in certain jars with certain caps. They stuff them with salt for 30 days and then take it out. They then stuff the person with linen. They wrap the mummy with linen also. They put it in a box with a sphinx head on it. They box has eyes drawn on so that the person can “see” the afterlife. I learned that I like to work in groups rather than by myself.

Science

In science class we have been making crayons into “sediment” like rocks do after they have been hit with other rocks. We do this by shredding them with cheese shredders or potato peelers. Then we put them into foil an put them under great pressure just like rocks get. After a week we went and got them. Mine was under a trombone shelf. It becomes to be put together like rocks get put together.
