Band

My favorite song in band is Zydeco Cajun Crawdad Dance. I have attached a video of Sydney-flute, Chloe-2nd Clarinet, and me-flute. It sounds bad because of the laptop’s microphone. I enjoy the new sectionals where we split up into groups of people and either do laptop section, section with Mr. Schonewill, and practice section. I also like the Hobbitt but it is kind of hard to play. These are a few of the things we are doing in band right now. Movie on 2-26-14 at 11.28 AM

Picture Book

Screen Shot 2014-02-24 at 9.55.35 AMWe started out the picture book process by interviewing 1st graders about their ideas of picture book characters, what they want to happen in the book, etc. Then we did a rough draft graph of the writing in our books. Then we edited it and made a final draft of the book. We drew 4 pictures a day and then we shared it and got feedback again from the 1st graders. Drawing so many pictures sometimes can be frustrating because you have to rush if you want to get it done. One day I left my book at school so I had to do 8 pages that day. If I could change something about it I would have used a different coloring utensil than colored pencils because colored pencils rub onto the opposite page. This picture has been fun, but long.

Tim Bosch Chapel

The chapel challenged me to live out my faith. It was very cool to see how happy Tim was even as he had brittle bone disease and probably was in a lot of pain. It was also cool how the songs connected with Tim’s speech. We sang Jesus Lover of my Soul, Oceans, and Til’ I See You. Oceans connected when it said, “When oceans rise, my soul will rest in my embrace, I’ll keep my eyes above the waves. Tim rested in God’s embrace when he went through many hard times. It connected in Jesus Lover of my Soul because Tim understood and knew that God would always be with him and love him. In Til’ I See You, it connected when Tim would see God in Heaven, but until then he would keep living out his faith. This chapel showed how Tim has a very strong faith.

Immigration Interview

We got to interview people from other places that immigrated to the United States. Our group interviewed Miss Sulayman and Mrs. Hildebrand. Miss Sulayman is from Indonesia and Mrs. Hiledbrand is from Hong Kong. One of the stereotypes that the U.S. had about Indonesians is that they think that Indonesians are Asian. She said that when she first arrived at Calvin College, her roommate was guessing where she came from, and she guessed everywhere like Asia or China, but not Indonesia. This shows that the U.S. sometimes has wrong stereotypes about other people. She came here to go to college. She said that her family had always known that she was going to go to the U.S. for college. This shows that in Indonesia, they sometimes plan out that they will go to college from when they are children. Mrs. Hildebrand showed us pictures of Hong Kong and all the different foods and holidays. She told us that in China people are always grown up in the Buddha religion. There are many temples in Hong Kong. For Christmas, they light up buildings with many lights that say ‘Merry Christmas’ and other Christmas greetings. They have double decker busses that if you are on the top level, when you turn, one side of the bus tips. Mrs. Hildebrand said that it was really scary riding the top of the bus. It was very cool to get to interview people from other countries and learn more about other countries.
