Wind Erosion Project

A partner and I had to create a project about Wind Erosion.

1. This project is an example of when the wind blows and wears away large rocks.

2. The second project shows that different types of dunes are shaped depending on how the wind blows.

3. This project shows that over time the wind wears away  the ground and removes the surface particles. It makes the ground lower than before.

4. The last example is of rocks that get hit with large particles in the wind which cause them to become dented. These are called ventifacts.

Volcano Project

For science we had to make a volcano out of a play dough like substance. We had to label 10 things and we painted it. When we put the clay around the bottle, it kept slipping off, so we had to keep putting more on. Sometime this week we will put ketchup, baking soda, and vinegar in the bottle and it will explode out of the top and out of some straws that are side vents. The ketchup makes it red, which will make it look like lava. It did not work as well as I would’ve liked, but it turned out okay.

Mystery–The Case of the Stolen Diamond

The Case of the Stolen Diamond

In the small town of Riverside Falls, there was a rich couple, their names were John and Mary, and they owned one of the most valuable diamonds in the world. Everyone envied them for it, and no one knew the real place it was hidden. No one suspected it, but it was kept in their house behind a picture frame, in a safe. The safe had one key, and one key only. The key was kept in a small compartment in the same picture frame. No one had ever tried to steal it, at least not that anyone knew of.

One gorgeous July evening, when the sun was just beginning to set, Mary and John, and their friends Annett and David, were enjoying a beautiful night out on the patio.

“It’s getting a bit chilly isn’t it John?” asked Mary.

“Yes it is. Want to head inside?” inquired John to the rest of the group.

“Sure,” answered Annett and David simultaneously.

As the small group headed inside for the night, David asked if John would show them the new section that they just got added into their house.

“Sure!” exclaimed John, he had been waiting for someone to show if off to since it was built, “We decided to change the location of the diamond because we think it will be safer to have it in the new section of the house. The security company is coming tomorrow to set up our high tech security system.”

David smiled a mysterious little smile.

“What are you looking so mysterious about?” inquired Mary.

“Ohhh…ummm..I don’t know, just happy for you and John and your new edition!” replied David a little too cheerful.

“Oh, thanks,” replied Annett thinking that there must be more to it than that. They enjoyed the rest of their quiet evening relaxing and chatting.

That evening, as John and Mary were sleeping, Mary heard a creak downstairs.

“What was that?” asked Mary.

“What?” asked John, his hands rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

“That creaking noise.”

“I didn’t hear anything, Mary. Just go back to sleep. It was probably the gardener’s house door opening from the wind,” answered John.

“Oh alright, but I know it wasn’t the gardener’s house, this time it sounded like it was coming from the downstairs back door,” Mary concernly whispered. After that, John fell back to sleep, but Mary stayed awake listening. After ten minutes, Mary heard someone walking around downstairs. She thought to herself, “If John won’t believe me, then I’m going to have to do something about it myself.” When she went downstairs, she turned all the lights on, and no one was there. “Hmmm…I was sure I heard something,” Mary thought, “maybe I’m hearing things.” She turned off all the lights, and walked up the stairs again.

In the morning, John went downstairs, and checked the safe, like he did every morning. He reached behind the picture frame and pried open the small compartment door with his fingernails. He grabbed the key with his fingertips, but he noticed it wasn’t pointing due east, as he always put it. He thought that was a bit strange. Then he pushed aside the picture frame, and he unlocked the safe. He reached in with his right hand, felt the soft cushion it was normally resting on in the center. The diamond was gone. The diamond that the whole town knew him for, the diamond that he had worked so hard to pay for. It was gone. He could not believe it.

He knew something was wrong ever since the key was pointed in the wrong direction. He also knew that it had something to do with the sound Mary heard the night before. He should have listened to her.

Mary and John decided that they were going to first interrogate all of their staff before they contacted the police. The called in all of the staff, which was around ten people.

While interrogating the cook, Mrs. Brown, she claims she was up in the kitchen making the breakfast for the next morning. The kitchen maid, Ms. Smith, was up helping her too. She made it, and she baked it early the next morning.

When asking questions to the kitchen maid, she explained just like the cook said, that she was helping make breakfast for the next morning.

The gardener said that he had just gotten up to go to the bathroom. He said it nervously, as if he was hiding something. Both Mary and John thought this was quite suspicious.

“These three were the only ones awake during the robbery and I’d say that the gardener, Mr. Botts, sounds like the one, he said it so mysteriously,” said John.

“I think we should take him in for questioning one more time,” was Mary’s response.

“Okay.”

They questioned the gardener so much about where he was and what time he was out and what he was doing that he began to perspire. Finally, he gave in.

“Okay, okay! Here’s the truth. Since I live by myself, I get pretty lonely. So one night, I found a friendly stray cat on the streets, and I decided to take it home to my house in your backyard. I knew how you didn’t allow animals, but I was so terribly lonely. I took him home and have been hiding him for three months now. The night of the robbery I was actually getting a drink for my cat, but I thought that if I told you, I would get fired for keeping a cat in my house. I’m sorry, but if you won’t let me keep the cat, I have decided that I will quit.”

“You may keep that cat, Mr. Botts. Thank you for your honesty. You are dismissed,” replied Annett, it was John that didn’t like animals.

“So if it’s none of the staff then who is it?” wondered John and Mary.

“Well, lets think of all the people that came to our house in the last week,” said Mary.

“Okay. Today’s Wednesday, and on Sunday, we had over the pastor and his wife,” said John while counting them off on his fingers, “on Monday, no one came over, on Tuesday we had over Annett and David and….that’s it.”

“We know that Annett and David would never ever do anything like this, so let’s have the police search the pastor and his wife’s house,” replied Mary in a concerned tone.

The next day the police searched the pastor’s house and questioned both of them, but they found no trace of the diamond or anything suspicious.

“Well if it wasn’t them, then it has to be Annett and David,” confirmed John.

“Okay, but I really hope it’s not. We’ve been friends for so long and I trusted them.”

“Me too,” replied John sadly, “let’s try calling them first to see if they want to confess before we have to call the police.

Ring, Ring. Ring, Ring. It felt as if the rings went on forever. Finally it went to a voice recording.

Annett’s overly sweet voice came on. “Hello, I’m sorry but I couldn’t reach the phone right now. Please leave your name and number, and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Sorry, goodbye.”

“That’s funny, it seems that Annett always answers her phone. Let’s try David’s,” said Mary confused.

After many rings again, David’s low husky voice recording answered.

“Sorry, I can’t answer the phone right now. Please call me back another time. Bye.”

“Boy, that’s really strange! Annett and David both always have their phones on them!” said Mary.

“Maybe they saw who was calling and they don’t want to answer because they actually stole the diamond! said John excitedly, “This is a clue we can point out to the police!”

They decided they had no choice but to turn their friends in. The police asked them some questions, and they said goodbye.

The next morning the police called them. They explained that they’d found them and put them into jail, and the diamond was safe in the police headquarters. They quickly drove down to pick it up.

When they were driving home, Mary told John, “You know what? I think we should donate this diamond to a charity. We don’t need it anyways and we have plenty of money without it.”

“I think you’re right. This could happen again and again, and it is all too much trouble to go through.”

The next day they donated the money from the diamond to a charity that helps people after they get out of jail. It helps them find a house and stay out of trouble. The diamond ended up helping Annett and David after they got out of jail after two years, and they apologized to Mary and John, and they all became friends again. They all decided that they would never let something like a silly diamond get in the way of their relationship again.

The Stoning of Stephen

Stephen’s Trial

When the number of disciples where growing, the Hellenistic Jews complained that the Hebraic Jews where overlooking the Hellenistic Jew’s widows in the daily distribution of food. So, the Twelve disciples got together and they chose 7 people to share the Word of God, and the rest would help distribute the food. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas. So the Word of God spread. Stephen performed many wonders and miracles among the people. Some people from Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)—Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia, argued with Stephen, but could not find anything wrong. They secretly told some men to false witness him, saying he spoke against Moses and God. This stirred up the people, and they tested him in the Sanhedrin. Then the high priest asked Stephen, “Are these charges true?” And Stephen replied by telling everyone how God’s glory and power has been with them throughout many generations. Stephen finished by telling the people that they resisted the Holy Spirit and do not listen to God. The people were furious. Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the Glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” They all covered their ears, yelling at the top of their lungs, they rushed at him, dragged him outside the city, and began to stone him. The witnesses of this laid their coats down before a man named Saul. While he was being stoned, Stephen asked Jesus to receive his Spirit. He cried for Jesus not to hold the sin against them. After he said these things, he fell asleep. As you can see, Stephen had to be full of the Holy Spirit, to testify against these people.

Science Tower Project

Our class was split into groups and we had to create a tower out of spaghetti, mini marshmallows, and tape to hold an egg, at 40 cm tall, will remaining sturdy on an small earthquake simulator for 10 seconds. This is our tower on the second day of building. Photo on 12-12-14 at 1.35 PMOver the weekend our tower collapsed. Then someone in our group smashed it, so we had to do a little remodeling. Here it is after the third day of building. Photo on 12-15-14 at 1.51 PM #2We had a lot of extra small pieces that we could not use. We had to microwave the marshmallows to get them to be sticky again. It is definitely not 40 cm tall now, and we do not think we will be able to fix it. The grade is not all on how well the tower turns out, but our tower has no way to hold the egg, which is a problem. I hope our group will be able to fix it at least a bit more, so that we might be able to hold the egg without it cracking.

Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is very different from God and Jesus, but in some ways the same. The Holy Spirit is the third member of the Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He lives in our hearts once we believe, accept, and follow God’s commands. We don’t really know what form he is in, as we also don’t know the form of God and Jesus. He is equal to God and Jesus, and has the same divine attributes as them. He loves and cares for us.

He works in our lives in many ways. When we ask the Holy Spirit to lead us, guide us, and help us do the things God wants us to do, he will help us stop sinning, and do the things that please God. If we pray and are unsure of what to say, the Holy Spirit will intercede and pray for us. The bible says that He will help us recall the things we’ve learned about God, so that means he will help us when we tell others about God. After having Him in your heart, we will learn to be consumed and controlled by Him. He reveals God’s Truth and Will to us through our hearts. When it comes to non-christians, the Holy Spirit gives them a feeling of guilt in their heart because of their sins. He teaches us in our hearts and minds, asking us to repent and to choose to let God forgive you so you can have a new life. He helps produce God’s character in the heart of a believer. There are many ways that the Holy Spirit works in our lives.

Bowling Afternoon

Yesterday we went to Hudsonville Lanes with our grade. I was in Lane 16 with Chloe, Taylor, and Sydney. Maleia, Rachel, Haley and Laura were in the lane next to us. It was really rainy. I rode with Anneka’s mom and Anneka, Taylor, Chloe, and Sydney. We had a ton of fun. We got this paper about different ways you can do it, one was bowl with your eyes closed, another was bowl with your opposite hand, and another one was lay on your stomach and push it with your hands. That was really fun.

Metaphor Writing

Meadow

I am a meadow. A meadow has green grass, flowers, and it is mostly flat ground. There are a few prickers though. It is sunny and warm weather. Close by, a pretty butterfly fluttered in the wind. I have not been through many hard things in my life, that is why I have chosen it. God has blessed me with a great family, a nice school, and good friends. I am so grateful that He gave me what I have.

The prickers in the meadow represent hard things. There have been a few hard things in my life. It was hard when my great grandpa and grandma died. When we were visiting my grandma and grandpa, my grandma was supposed to ride home with me and my brother on the plane. She got a call from her brother saying that her mom was getting more sick. She had a blood infection. My grandma told us she would not be able to ride home with us. A few weeks later my great grandma died. After we got home, we had to start packing to leave to go back again. It was hard to see my grandma go through this hard time. It was also hard when my great grandpa died. He died before my great grandma. He was really nice and always smiling. Through hard times, I still try to trust God because I know he has a plan for me.

The flowers represent all the good things in my life. I am so grateful to be able to go to a Christian school. I sometimes forget how lucky I am. Another thing I am thankful for is living in the U.S. I do not think how blessed I am to be able to live in a country with safety, without poverty, and tons of crime. Finally, I am thankful for great family and friends. I am so privilaged to have people who care about me so much. I thank God for blessing me, even though most of the time I take it for granted.

The flat ground represents that God will always help me keep going through life by either holding me steady, or being steady himself. I trust he will never abandon me. This means that through the many hard trials I know I may face through life, I know God will always be by my side; even when I can’t see him there in human form, I can feel him there.
