March 22, 2020

Dear parents,

I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather and staying healthy.

Zoom online video meeting sign-up

Last week is a big transition for all of us. We are learning new ways of teaching and learning. I welcome your feedback to better assist your kids’ learning.

It seems that last week’s way of distance learning is not easy to follow and too much work on the parents. To lighten your burden and better their language immersion, I’m thinking about online meeting calls with students. That way, I can teach directly, and students could finish their work, ask me questions and get feedback from me directly in the online meeting.  Let’s give it a try and see how it goes.  Again, I welcome your feedback. I have made a google sheet to sign up for available time slots for online meeting calls. Here it is. https://docs.google.com/document/d/15lDVGdlYjSoCcZzhANqLiN1aGd7yTHQ44qFlB1CiOPQ/edit?usp=sharingPlease give as much available time slots as possible as we need to accommodate everyone’s need. For example, if your kids can be on the call anytime from 9:00am-5:00pm, please let us know that. Please find your kid’s name in the google doc and record your kid’s available time from Monday to Friday. Also, I’m planning to use Zoom for our online meeting calls. Thank you!!

Monday and Tuesday Meeting

For this Monday, the school has asked us to have a day off. So let’s do that. School has encouraged teachers to have a connection time with the kiddos on Monday. And I really want to do that too. But since our chromebooks have not gone out yet, I want to wait until Tuesday to have a connection time with the kids. I’m planning to use Zoom to host a whole class meeting at 9:30AM on Tuesday. Join us if you are able. If you couldn’t, we totally understand. Please see detailed instruction below.

Zoom Set-up

Zoom might be very new to you. But it’s really easy to set up and run.

Watch this 53 second video to help with getting Zoom up and running:

It takes just a few minutes to download Zoom and set it up. Please set up Zoom on the computer that your kids will use later for learning. (For parents who might not be able to assist kids on Tuesday, you might want to set it up beforehand. Then, on Tuesday, he/she can simply click the link below to join us.)

Then, on Tuesday, Join our Zoom Meeting at 9:30 AM by clicking the link below:

Subbing during maternity Leave

As you all know, my baby is coming in April. I’m planning to stop teaching right before Spring Break, and have my sub begin teaching on April 13. Ran Tao will sub for me during my maternity leave. She is the aide in Weibao Zhang Laoshi’s classroom and will sub for me for the rest of the semester. Ran will join our live sessions from now, and I will start transitioning everything to her.

Computer pick-up and Homework sheets

As you all know, our class’ scheduled pick-up time is 3:30-4:30pm tomorrow. If you haven’t emailed me and wanted to grab your kid’s computer, just come from 3:30-4:30pm tomorrow and follow the instructions that I have sent out previously.

I will have homework worksheet packets for 2nd grade math, 3rd grade math, and mandarin (same for both grades). This is for upcoming distance learning. When you come to pick up the computer, please also grab your kids’ math worksheets and Mandarin worksheets. I will put these three kinds of worksheets in three cardboard boxes. Make sure you grab the right one for your kids. For parents who will not come to pick up the computer tomorrow, I’m planning to leave the worksheets in the boxes between the two doors at the front entry. The first door is open 7-5 Monday through Friday. You may pick it up anytime during these periods. For parents who are not able to pick up the worksheets, I will send out a digital file of these worksheets.

Music, PE and virtual zoo

Mr. Schonewill channelled all of his ZCS elementary music activities through his blog site: http://zcsmusic.blogspot.com  Check it out and have some fun.

Also, Mrs. Miller has provided PE distance learning on her blog. Check out the link below.

Dear parents and students,

It’s SO GOOD to see your kids’ faces (and their dogs/cats) on flipgrid. It’s such a fun experience. I’ve given them video responses on flipgrid. Please check it out. Below are the links to go there.

Also, a few parents have shared with me a very helpful app called Google translate. It reads your kids’ Mandarin work and translate it into English immediately. It helps your kids learn Mandarin and do the homework. However, as always, please keep it to the minimum. Another great feature is that it can read the Mandarin text out loud. When your kid reads his/her book-bag book and encounter unknown words, this app can read it out loud for him/her. This is very helpful! I’ve put some basic introductions of it at the bottom.

Today, there are two parts in our learning plan- Math and Mandarin. Please follow the instructions below.

 Math

  • Please watch the flipgrid video below.

2nd grade: https://flipgrid.com/adf70c7b

3rd grade: https://flipgrid.com/c66880aa

  • Please visit Khan Academy and finish the homework assigned to you there. Please follow the same steps that I shared yesterday to enter. Please watch all the learning videos first. Then, go to the quizlet website (see below for each grade). The quizlet lists the important vocabulary that you might need when you do the exercise. Go through this list. Look at the vocabulary word, press the audio button, listen to its Mandarin pronunciation and English definition, and take a look at the picture. Go through every word. You may go back to this list if you need to when you are doing exercise. Afterwards, go back to Khan Academy and do the exercises.  You may go back and watch the learning videos whenever you need to.

Mandarin

Please find the story sheet in your homework folder (as shown below). Please read the story by yourself first. If you don’t know a word, just skip it. Afterwards, you may listen to my audio reading of this story.

Students should finish the three questions on the sheet. Please encourage them to try their best. After they are done, they can look at the answer keys below. He/she needs to use a pen/pencil of another color to correct their own answers. Please take a picture of his/her corrected homework and send it to me. Thank you!

Answer keys:

  1. 因为他不会说英语,很想念中国的朋友和老师。
  2. 我们每个人都花时间陪他玩、说话。父母给他讲故事,猜谜语,带他去公园踢足球,或者去湖里游泳。
  3. 他现在变得越来越开心了。

Resources: Google Translate

Find it on your app store.

Have it set up to go from chinese to English as seen on the top of the picture.

Click the camera button. Use your camera to hold it over mandarin characters and it translates the characters to English.

You could also take a picture of the Mandarin text beforehand. Go to google translate, click the camera button, choose the upload option, upload your picture, use your finger to color all the texts, click the blue button once it pops up, and you will be directed to another page. On that page, there is a sound button above the Mandarin text. Click it and it will read the text in mandarin out loud. (It’s a great tool to help your kids practice reading. )Also, there are English translations on the bottom.
