Erosion Caused by Glaciers

In the past couple weeks we have been working on projects. My group, Jacob Heeres and I,  had to study erosion caused by glaciers. A few of the things in the picture below are, kettles, grooves, strations, till, moraine, arete, cirque, and plucking. There are two kinds of glaciers that we learned about, continental glacier which covers most of a continent or island and a valley glacier. Overall this was a pretty fun project. Photo on 5-14-15 at 1.19 PM #2

Mauna Loa Volcano

Photo on 4-20-15 at 1.44 PM #3

In the past few weeks in Science class we have been working on making and studying volcanoes.  This is the one that my group and I made together. We have things like lava flow, ashes, cinders, bombs, side vent, pipe, magma chamber, and many other things that make up a volcano. We also made a poster that describes the different kinds of volcanoes like composite, cinder cone, and shield. We tried to make ours after the Mauna Loa shield volcano in Hawaii.

Density Lab

In Science we are talking about how two objects with the same volume and size can have a different densities. For example we put Diet Coke and Mountain Dew in a tub of water. The Diet Coke floated and the Mountain Dew sank. Right now we are trying to figure out why that is. We had a guess. We think that maybe there is more sugar in the Mountain Dew than in the Diet Coke.

Science

A couple of days a go in Science we made our own sedimentary rocks. First we had to make make sediment we did this by using potato peelers and cheese graters this made little scraps of crayon. Then we put them in a piece of tinfoil and wrapped it up tight then we put it under pressure for a week and a half then it came out as a whole piece. Next we are going to make metamorphic rocks which you have pressure but also you add heat. That is what we have been doing in Science these past couple days.

What If Design Project

Our sixth grade class has been asked by the city of Zeeland to design a park on the corner of main street and elm street, which is now an eleven space parking lot. Before we began thinking of ides we went to Tiger Design studio and they just took us through some of the main things of designing and brainstorming. Then we came back and we did some research about some of the things that our clients Mr. Klunder and Mrs. DeRue want us to put in the park. For our research we looked up some things that we thought might be cool to have in a park. We looked up Water features, Green Space,All ages, Seating areas, and how might we include an old town look to the park to match downtown Zeeland. We talked about how any idea even if it is crazy that we might be able to work something out with it for our project even if it may be the craziest thing you have ever heard. This project could have many different interesting outcomes. Our group had some great ideas that will really help us design this new park.

Descriptive Paragraph

Our assignment was to describe a particular thing in our readers’ minds. How did I do?

In a little room nestled away in a cage is a little chinchilla. With a bushy tail and sharp little teeth the chinchilla sits waiting, waiting hoping to get a good treat to eat such as a raisin or dried cherry. It sits on it hind legs waiting for his treat. You hold it out to him and he grabs it with his sharp little teeth and nibbles it slowly savoring his tasty treat then eagerly jumps up to see if he could get at least one more morsel. Give him one more he should be good at least for a while. If you leave him alone for a while he will start to get sleepy and slowly fall into a deep, deep slumber.
