God used Paul to change the lives of others. His whole life he prepared him for a life of ministry. Two ways that he did this was that he had Roman citizenship in addition to Jewish citizenship. He also knew many languages which could be helpful when he was traveling, and he was very bright and outgoing. I think that God might be using me to make a difference in other countries. A couple of years ago I went to Guatemala as an exchange student and I lived with a family that was pretty wealthy compared to other families. I saw some people on the sides of the street eating scraps and that broke my heart. I think God might be using that experience to give me a heart for people like the ones that I saw in Guatemala.
During this unit on Christian persecution, I learned a lot of information. For example, I learned that the government stores Christians in shipping containers. They store 20 to 30 – and sometimes more- Christians in one shipping container. As if that weren’t bad enough, the heat can get over 100º F at times. I enjoyed this unit because it made me more aware. We had a jar so that people could donate and then that money would go to Open Doors. I learned that prayer is one of the biggest things we can do to help.
For science class, we had to make a spaghetti and marshmallow tower that would hold an egg for 10 seconds and survive an earthquake. For our group, we spent a lot of time planning, and in the beginning, it worked well. But near the end, we started spending too much money and we ended up without enough money to finish it. This is our final tower.
We “came up” with our idea from a person we admire so much. He gave us the idea. The problem is that Betty wants to know how tall her tree is. She is standing 4 feet away from it and has a rope that is 9 feet attached to the top of it. We used the Pythagorean theorem to find the answer. The tree is 9.8 ft tall.
Our chain isn’t very long, but I think it will hold all the weights. We used all the materials because we wanted it to hold all the weights. I think the only problem might be that the tape doesn’t hold all the weights. What worked well was that it held all the weights.
8th grade has been pretty good so far. One thing I’ve really enjoyed so far was 8th grade camp. I enjoyed the worship that we did there. I have learned that now every little kid and their teachers at school will look up to us. I’m looking forward to the 8th-grade lock-in.
We designed our boat to look really simple. All we did was we added a dowel rod and added an index card to that for a sail. For the base, we used a square of styrofoam. When we tested it, the time it got was about 10 seconds. If we change anything we would probably make the sail curved more. When we raced the first time our time was 10.23 seconds. What we changed was that we added about half of a pipe cleaner behind the index cards. We did that to that the “sail” would be more in the shape that it should be so that it goes faster than the first time. Our second time was 10.5 seconds.
This summer was pretty good. I ran almost every day and I hung out with a lot of friends. At the beginning of July, I went to Gina’s cottage with her and we went tubing and kneeboarding a lot. A week after that I went to an overnight camp. It was a lot of fun because I got to see a lot of my friends. At the end of July, we went camping with a lot of people from our church. After that, we went to New Jersey to celebrate my grandparents 45th anniversary. I had a lot of fun spending the weekend with my cousins. Last week cross country practice started and it’s been fun so far. Next week we are going camping again with our friends. Overall, summer was really good.
La democracia es un sistema de gobierno en que todos (los ciudadanos, el gobierno, etc.) tienen las mismas oportunidades, derechos y libertades. Todos tienen una voz. Durante esta tema en estudios sociales hicimos un paquete, y vimos cuáles países son una democracia, y cuáles no. También había una actividad que fue el día del Unión Africana. No realmente fue una actividad que totalmente tenía que ver con la democracia, pero hablamos sobre cuáles países en África si son una democracia, y cuáles no. escogimos países en África para estudiar. El día del Unión Africana, necesitábamos representar a ese país. Para aprender sobre la democracia, necesitas saber lo que una democracia es. Necesitas saber cómo definir a la palabra. Aquí es una tabla que muestra dónde localizar mi país (Etiopía) en punto de vista de su gobierno, y un poco de información sobre su gobierno.
¿Quiénes somos?
Durante nuestra unidad de la democracia, aprendí muchas cosas. Yo aprendí si un país no es como el tuyo, no significa que es malo. Por ejemplo, si tú país es una democracia, pero hay otro país que no es una democracia, no puedes solo pensar “oh, ellos no son una democracia, son tan malos.” Porque si tú país hace eso, es muy probable que otros países lo hacen también. También aprendí que no es malo ser diferente. Si todos son una democracia, el mundo sería muy aburrido. Si todos no son una democracia, el mundo todavía sería muy aburrido. Pero si cada país es diferente, hace que cosas son más interesantes. Desde ahora, no voy a juzgar a los otros países por su gobierno. No voy a hablar mal sobre sus presidentes, y no voy a tener ese pensamiento en mi mente que “Los E.E.U.U es el mejor. ¡Nosotros somos el mejor país en todo el mundo!” Creo que es importante que todos dan cuenta de que no hay ninguna manera justa para determinar cuál país tienen el mejor gobierno. En la tabla que tengo, dice que Noruega es el país con mejor puntuación, pero eso no significa que es el mejor país. Pero en realidad, no hay ninguna manera de “escoger” cuál país tienen el “mejor” gobierno. Creo que es importante que damos cuenta de eso.
¿Quién es Él?
En esta tema de la democracia, Dios me ha enseñado cómo aceptar personas como son. Dios no ama a un país más que los otros porque son democráticas. No debemos de amar a un país tampoco. Jesús aceptó a sus discípulos como eran. Ellos fueron las personas que nadie le gusta hablar con y que nadie quería socializar con. Pero Jesús miró tras eso. Él no lo pensó por segunda vez. Solo fue y escogió a ellos para que fueran sus discípulos. Yo creo que debemos reflejar a Jesús en esa manera. Ni debemos de pensar en cómo aparece alguien a nosotros. No debemos usar su apariencia como una excusa por no hablar o socializar con ellos. Jesús no usó la apariencia de sus discípulos como excusa, entonces ¿porque está bien y justo que lo usamos? Quizás las primeras apariencias no son lo mejor. Eso todavía significa que debemos dar segundo chances a cualquier persona. Todos deben un segundo chance. Piensa en ti mismo. Si tu primera apariencia con alguien no fue el mejor, es muy probable que vas a querer un segundo chance. Si tu piensas que querías un segundo chance, debes dar uno a alguien más. No es justo, no está bien. Una manera grande en que puedes reflejar el amor de Jesús es por solo ir y hablar a alguien que no normalmente hablas con. Si conoces alguien de un país que no es una democracia, pero el tuyo es, no significa que no puedes hablar con ellos. Quizás, ellos quieren una democracia, pero su gobierno es tan estricta que no les deja. Debemos de reflejar a Jesús en esa manera.
¿Quién soy yo?
La tema de democracia ha afectado en como veo a diferentes personas y países. Yo he visto que está bien ser diferente. Está bien ser ti mismo. No necesitas cambiar algo para que otras personas te gustan. Eso vale para tu país también. Tu país no necesita ser una democracia porque cada otro país es. También vale para ti mismo. No necesitas cambiar tu personalidad porque eso es lo que tus amigos quieren. Si ellos no te gusta como eres, ellos son los que necesitan cambiar. Ellos necesitan cambiar su punto de vista para que no sea de “Ella es tan aburrida, debe cambiar su personalidad”. No debes cambiar para que otras personas te gustan. Tampoco debes esperar que otras personas cambian su personalidad. He intentado a tener ese principal en mi mente cada día.
Llamada a la acción
Yo creo que los resultados tangibles que estarán presentes en mi vida serían que no uso la apariencia de personas como una excusa por no hablar con ellos. Yo creo que eso es importante hacer porque eso es lo que Jesús nos llama para hacer. ¿Cómo podemos reflejar a Jesús, si no estamos haciendo lo que él pide? Yo creo que mi trabajo en el mundo, sería solo respetar a los otros países. Quizás ellos no son democráticas, pero necesitamos darles un chance. Yo creo que aunque es un trabajo muy pequeño, todos deben solo respetar a los otros países. Yo creo que voy a responder a lo que aprendí por investigar a porque los otros países no son una democracia. Si en algún momento alguien dice algo malo sobre otros país, y porque ellos piensan que no son una democracia, yo podría a responderles con los razones válidos.
Una cosa graciosa que pasó este año es algo que pasó con el Sr. Lowe. Cuando mi clase tuvo ciencias, él Sr. Lowe estaba haciendo un experiment0. El experimento tenía un oso de gummy y con un poquito de fuego. Algo pasó que el humo subió al detector de humo y el detector empezó a sonar. Todo la escuela necesitaba salir, porque todos no sabían que fue un accidente. Nosotros necesitabamos estar afuera por mucho tiempo, porque personas necesitaban venir y caminar por la escuela para ver que no realmente fue un fuego, y que solo fue un accidente.
Este verano yo voy a jugar sofbol, y vamos a ir a acampar. Nosotros también vamos a ir a Nueva Jersey. En Nueva Jersey, vamos a ir al océano, y vamos a estar con todos mis primos, y mis abuelos. Este verano yo quiero solo relajarme en la casa. Yo quiero poder dormir hasta como las 12:00 cada día, pero eso no funcionaría. Tambíen voy a ir a un campamento de verano con muchas de mis amigas.
Para mi, la Democracia es importante porque todos tienen una voz. Todos tienen una oportunidad para decir algo. Creo que la democracia funciona como un cuerpo. En un cuerpo, cada parte necesita hacer su trabajo, o el cuerpo no va a funcionar correctamente. Es la misma cosas con la democracia. Si una persona no hace su trabajo en la democracia, no funcionaría correctamente. Yo creo que yo participará en nuestra democracia como una voz de los ciudadanos. Quizás you hablaría para los ciudadanos. Creo que en una democracia es importante que todos tienen la oportunidad para usar su voz, pero que también que lo usan. Si tienen la oportunidad de usar tu voz, lo debes tomar. Debes usar esa oportunidad, en vez de solo botarlo en la basura. Aún es importante que el gobierno escucha el voz de los ciudadanos. Si nosotros usamos esa oportunidad para usar nuestro voz, pero el gobierno no nos escucha, ¿Cuales ventajas hay de usar nuestro voz? El gobierno necesita haver su parte también.
Etiopía piensa que la UA debe no debe avanzar la democracia porque el gobierno quiere más control sobre el país. Una democracia es una sistema de gobierno en que todos los ciudadanos tienen las mismas oportunidades, derechos y libertades. Todos tienen una voz, todos están escuchados. Una democracia es como un cuerpo. Todos tienen una parte, y todos necesitan hacer su parte específico. Si una persona (o parte del cuerpo) no está haciendo su parte, todo va a caer. Algunas características de una democracia buena son que todos los ciudadanos tienen los mismos derechos, y que la mayoría de los ciudadanos participan en los elecciones por su decisión. También que la sistema de gobierno permite que varias perspectivas trabajan juntas. Las características de una democracia mala es que el país no ha tenido elecciones nacionales en 20 años, y no hay manera de escoger nuevo líder. Otra sería que las leyes del país discriminan al país en varios grupos de personas. Por ejemplo, las niñas no pueden ir al misma escuela que los chicos, o ni pueden ir en si. Algunos de los grupos segregados no tienen las mismas oportunidades por la segregación legal. Es importante que todos tienen las mismas oportunidades, y derechos. Es importante que todos tienen una voz, y que lo usan. Es importante que el presidente/gobierno escucha al voz de los ciudadanos para que su país puede funcionar como un cuerpo.
Etiopía estaba en el puesto 129 de 167 países. Recibió 3.42/10 en su puntuación total. En los procesos electorales y pluralismo recibió 0/10. En sus libertades civiles recibió 2.35/10, y en el funcionamiento de gobierno recibió 3.57/10. En su participación política recibió 5.56/10. Aún recibió 5.63/10 en la categoría de cultura política. Finalmente, en su categoría recibió Régimen autoritario. Yo creo que Etiopía recibió este resultado porque es una democracia, pero, su forma de gobernar en muy malo. Por ejemplo, la única fuente de información para Etiopía es por el gobierno, y el gobierno lo escribe. Su última elección general fue el 24 de Mayo de 2015. Su sistema de gobierno no hace que es muy fácil cambiar sus leyes, o para hacer nuevas leyes. Yo creo que este resultado significa que el gobierno no realmente respecta al libertad de la gente, y sus derechos humanos.
El gobierno de Etiopía no quiere una democracia, pero la gente sí lo quiere. Nuestro gobierno no quiere nada que ver con una democracia. Nosotros recibimos 0/10 en esa parte de la tabla. Sin embargo, la gente sí lo quiere. Ellos recibieron 5.56/10 en esa categoría de la tabla. Yo creo que debemos tener una democracia, porque todos tienen un derecho de ser escuchados. Además, creo que es importante que todos los ciudadanos pueden votar. Nuestro plan de acción para empezar la democracia empieza en la categoría de procesos electorales y pluralismo. Nuestro plan es que todos pueden votar, y que no solamente es el presidente/gobierno. También que votan cada 4 años, o lo que sea que deciden.) El siguiente plan, está en la categoría de libertades civiles. Nuestro plan es que haremos leyes para que todos tenemos los mismos derechos, para que todos tienen un voz.
Yo aprendí que las leyes del apartheid afectaron a los negros mucho. En 1989 los negros no podían votar, pero en 1999 76% de los negros sí podían votar. Eso fue un cambio muy grande. También en 1987, 82% de los negros en Sudáfrica fueron desempleados. Pero en 2001, 50% de la población en Sudáfrica que fueron desempleados fueron negros. Eso es un gran cambio. En el año 1991, 8% de los negros fueron graduados de escuelas preparatorias de Sudáfrica. En 2001 ese número cambio. Había 17% de los negros que fueron graduados de escuelas preparatorias de Sudáfrica. Una otra cosa que cambió fue el número de grupos familiares Sudáfricanos que cuentan con suministro eléctrico. En 1996 había 44%, pero en 2001 había 62%. Yo creo que nosotros la mayoría del tiempo no tomamos el tiempo para aprender lo que está pasando en otros países, pero en realidad debemos. Es importante que sepamos lo que está pasando en el mundo.
Yo quiero que nosotros pensamos más en como ayudar a otras culturas con las cosas que están pasando en sus países. Quiero que nosotros vemos las noticias y que estamos informados de lo que está pasando en Sudáfrica. Creo que eso es importante.
Está información me impacta porque nosotros siempre estamos enfocados en nuestras vidas, y en lo que está pasando en nuestro país. Si nosotros estaríamos en el lugar de los Sudáfricanos, ¿que haríamos? Nosotros debemos poner nuestros mismos en “los zapatos” de las personas en Sudáfrica, y pensar en como ellos sienten.
I used to think that Africa was this really poor country, that had basically nothing. Now, I know that they have lots of stuff, but it seems weird because it’s not what we use all the time. Most people think that in Africa it’s really hot all the time. That’s not necessarily true. My parents and my sister traveled to Ethiopia, and when they came back they said that it wasn’t hot. My sister wore hoodies just about every day. Part of that is because it’s their rainy season, but not all countries in Africa are hot like the inside of a lions mouth. I also learned that we think Africa doesn’t have any of the right resources, but really they just have different resources. Africa is not as developed as the USA. They don’t have wrong resources, they just have different resources. I also learned that most of the orphans from the world come from Africa. I also learned that not all countries have dirty water. Most people think of Africa and think “Oh, they don’t have any clean water. At all“, but in reality, they have clean water, we just don’t take the time to learn about Africa.
En nuestro clase de estudios sociales estamos aprendiendo sobre la desigualdad espacial. La parte más interesante de mi visita a los barrios probablemente fue ver como las personas más pobres usaron sus recursos, y que estaban felízes con lo que tenían. Yo no creo que puedes comparar la desigualdad espacial de México DF con Zeeland, porque Zeeland es tan pequeño y México DF es mucho más grande. Si piensas en Zeeland/Holland no realmente hay personas sin casas. Algunas veces ves una o dos personas, pero por la mayoría del tiempo no hay muchas personas. Aún que no hay muchas personas sin casas, Zeeland todavía es un ejemplo de desigualdad espacial. Hay muchas personas con diferentes tipos de casas, grandes, pequeños y otras cosas. Zeeland no es tan bueno de un ejemplo de desigualdad espacial como México DF, pero todavía es un ejemplo. Es importante que nosotros damos cuenta que hay desigualdad espacial en los Estados Unidos, y por todo el mundo.
Nosotros hemos estado aprendiendo sobre las amazonas por las últimas semanas. Yo aprendí que la selva tiene mucho biodiversidad, y que es importante quidar a la selva. La Sra. Zastrow nos enseño photos sobre su viaje en las amazonas. Yo creo que es interesante que los nativos que viven ahí, nunca han visto un telefono, no han visto al televisión. Mientras que nosotros queremos cualquier cosa. Es importante que nosotros quidamos a la selva porque los madareros lo están cortando. La selva es la casa de personas. Es basicamente la misma cosa que si alguien entra a Holland y dice “Yo voy a tomar tu casa, y vas a tener que encontrar otro lugar para vivir.” No es justo. Yo creo que esto va a cambiar la manera en que yo vivo porque voy a sentir culpable cuando compro algo hecho de madera, o de otros recursos en la selva. Nosotros debemos quidar a la selva porque es muy lindo, puede tener las respuestas a enfermedades y es la casa de personas y de animales.
In the Bible, it talks about names a lot, and the meaning of names. You might think that your name means nothing special, but it probably means something really cool. Some people’s parents named them a certain name because of the meaning, or because it was a family members name, or even because it is a name in the Bible. Some of God’s best-known names are Elohim and Yahweh. Elohim means creator, God is our creator. And Yahweh means loving/ caring relationship. Abrams name was changed to Abraham, and Sarai’s name was changed to Sarah. My name means humble and serene. I think that when you are given a name, either by your parent’s or by God, you need to live up to it. Names are to show a person’s heart or character. A visual that I chose for this is a name tag. When you are given’ a name, you need to live up to it. To me, this means that if your name means follower of Christ or something similar to that, you need to be a follower of Christ.
Conflict/Doubt
Another common theme in the Bible is the theme of conflict and doubt. This is a theme that people usually don’t want to talk about. Sometimes it’s because they are dealing with some conflict/ doubt in their own life. In the Bible Jacob’s name was changed to Israel, which means struggles with God. Genesis 32:28 says Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” I think that it would be difficult having a name that means struggles with God. In the Bible lot’s of people struggled with conflict and doubt. Take Peter for example. When Jesus was walking on water, Peter tried to do the same, and at first, he was successful. But then he doubted, and he started to sink. As humans it’s normal to doubt God or to deal with conflict, God can help you overcome it though. The visual that I chose for this was a picture of Jesus and Peter when Peter tried to walk on water. Sometimes we are like Peter and we start sinking, but we need to trust in Jesus, he is always faithful and trustworthy.
Covenant
Covenant is a common word used in the Bible. A covenant is basically an agreement between two people, or groups. One example of a covenant in the Bible is in Genesis 6:18 when God says to Noah “But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark”. Another example is when God was explaining his covenant to Abraham. When he was done he said, “As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you for the generations to come.” In the Bible (and in real life today) some covenants are “If you obey me, I will bless you, if you disobey there will be consequences.” There are two different types of covenants talked about in the Bible. Conditional and unconditional. A conditional covenant is when there are conditions. Basically, God says “You do this… and I’ll do this”. And an unconditional covenant is when there are no conditions when God keeps his promises no matter what. The visual I chose for this is two people shaking hands. Today in our modern world, we usually shake hands or do a pinky promise to seal a deal. To me, this means that we need to be faithful whenever we promise someone something. If we have a conditional covenant with God (or someone else) we need to be faithful and follow through with it.
Call
In the Bible, God called a lot of people to do things they probably didn’t want to do. God called Abraham and Sarah to leave their country. Abraham and Sarah didn’t always trust God’s call, and they tried to control things on their own. But, in the end, God was faithful and kept his promises. God still calls us to do things that we aren’t comfortable doing today. But, in order to know what he wants us to do we need to listen to him and look for clues. It’s not very easy, in fact, it takes a lot of listening and praying before you know exactly what God is calling you to do. A couple of years ago, my family felt like God was calling us to do foster care. We have had two foster kids in the past 3 ½ years. About a year and a half ago my family felt the same call, but with adoption. We have spent so much time praying and hoping that this is what God is really calling us to do. Sometimes you think that God is calling you to one thing when really he is calling you to something totally different. The visual that I chose for this is a picture of someone’s ear. You might be hearing what God is telling you, but are you really listening?
Sinai law
The 10 commandments are a covenant with God. We said “I will be your God” and he said that he would love and protect us and be our God. Part of being God’s people is to obey his commandments. Some of the commandments are harder to obey than others, but we still need to try our best. God gave us the 10 commandments to protect us, not to smother us. The law was made to cover every single area of our lives. You can’t do anything that doesn’t somehow connect to the law. Some of today’s ‘gods’ are social media, sports, friends, electronics, beauty, popularity and just about everything else. The visual I chose to represent this topic is a seatbelt. God’s law is kind of like a seatbelt. It keeps us safe and makes sure we don’t get hurt.
Salute to a King
The cycle of judges would be basically that things would go well, then the people of Israel would sin, an enemy would attack. The people would cry out to God, and then he would send them a judge. The people looked around and saw that all of the other nations had kings, so they wanted one. Sometimes we act like the people of Israel and we don’t learn from our mistakes. We keep making them over and over, but God has always had grace with us. Sometimes we need to ask ourselves, “Do we want what everyone else wants, or what God wants?” The visual I chose for this topic is a sign. The sign says “God’s way” and “Easy way”. You will always face decisions in life that you will have to choose God’s way or your way.
Something is Rotten
When God gave Israel a king, everything went downhill. They had one lousy king after another. God sent Elijah to talk to the people. Elijah tried, and at first, the people didn’t listen to him. Then, Ahab and Elijah went up to MT. Carmel. At Mount Carmel, they each made an altar and put a sacrifice on it. Whoever’s god answered first, is the true God. Most people know that Baal didn’t answer and that God did. The people turned back and worshiped God again.God puts us in difficult situations so that we can make a difference, even though people might not change right away after seeing your light. We need to be patient, it takes time. I chose a pair of running shoes as my visual for this topic because sometimes when you compete in sports there are people who will want you to turn away from the things that you believe. But, you need to stay strong and continue believing in what you believe.
A savior
Have you ever been given a gift that makes you swallow your pride? Like, if someone gives you a book called “Overcoming Selfishness”. You probably wouldn’t feel to good about yourself. Well, I know we have all gotten a gift like that. Jesus. He came to save us from our sins. Ok, this might sound like it’s going to be a lesson for little kids, but wait. Don’t stop reading, just hear me out. Jesus came to save us because we can’t save ourselves. We are so lost in our sin and misery, that we needed a savior that badly. God always has, and always will long for a relationship with us. That’s why he sent his son. He has made so many covenants with us, and we have failed to keep them. When the people of Israel could not keep the sinai covenant, God decided to offer them a new one. The new covenant that God offered would not be written on stone tablets. It would be written on their hearts. It didn’t need a sacrifice, because Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice. This new covenant also didn’t have conditions, it was based on grace and forgiveness. The visual I chose for this is a nativity scene. I chose it because this reminds me that Jesus came and brought us out of our sins. He came to overcome sin. Let’s remember that this christmas season.
