Bridges

May25

The first day we mainly worked on making groups of 2 or 3 toothpicks. Doubling up the toothpicks can help the bridge be stronger later on.

We started to build the ‘beam’ thats the bottom part of the sides of our bridge. And worked on the bases.

We continued to build the bases, and worked on putting the sides of the bridge together.

We finished the sides of the bridges, and the bases. We also glued the bases into place.

We attached the sides of the bridges together and glued them to the base. We started to work on the walkway of the bridge.

We finished gluing the walkway on. We also just added some re-inforcements to help make it stronger.

God at Work

April12

God was preparing Paul his whole life to be a missionary. He had citizenship in 2 different countries, which made it easier to travel. And he was a tent maker, so he was able to make shelter wherever he was. God has been at work in my life too. He has given everyone different talents. He has given me the ability to understand what I learn. School is something that comes naturally to me. Someday I could use that to help kids who might not understand it as well. School doesn’t come easily to everyone, but I have been blessed by God with that talent. I can use it to his honor and to his glory. We should all use the gifts and talents we have been given to help others. I can help people who may not understand it as well as I do. Maybe someday God will use that talent in me for a purpose as a part of his plan for my life.

Volcano- Mount Etna

March29

Hunter, Jaden and I made a volcano. We made it out of paper mache. We painted it to make it look more like the real volcano. It is going to erupt and cause ash cinders and bombs from a smoke bomb we made (on the left side) and it will erupt lava  (baking soda and vinegar.) We labeled 8 things on the volcano, and 2 things will happen during the eruption that we will explain.

That Monday something was about to happen that came as a shock to most people. I was walking by the front office when I saw Mr. B, resting with his head on his desk. It seemed unlikely that he would be sleeping. I went in to check on him and he wouldn’t wake up. I called 911 and the ambulance came within minutes. They pronounced him dead. After a thorough investigation, they came to the conclusion that someone had poisoned his coffee that morning. The only things that were on the desk was his coffee, a headband, a binder, and a key to the teachers lounge. I decided I would investigate the case to try to figure out what had happened. I first went to Jenna. She told me that she went to go say hi to Mr. B. She said they sat down and talked for a few minutes and then she left. I asked her what she did in his office besides talk, but she wouldn’t tell me. Then I went to go ask Joy a few questions. She said that she had gone in the office that morning, and he wasn’t there. “Perfect time to put something in his coffee,” I thought to myself.

“Joy, what did you do when you noticed that he wasn’t there?”

“I looked around, I was just looking at all of the books he had.” Said Joy

“Did you touch anything?”

Joy replied, “No, I think I might have left my headband in there though. I can not find it anywhere.”

Next I went and talked to Andrew. I asked him quite a few questions. He seemed pleased at the fact that Mr. Buteyn was dead. I asked him what he had done that morning before school started. He didn’t talk much but I got a few things out of him. He said that He had walked in the front entrance noticed Mr. B wasn’t in his office, then went to the teachers lounge to ask him a question. He found Mr. B in there talking with some other teachers. Mr. B asked Andrew to fill up his coffee for him.

“I don’t have the energy to do anything until I have my coffee.” Mr. B had said.

So Andrew went and filled it up for him. After he got back Mr. B asked Andrew to go put it in his office, and he would be there to talk in a few minutes.

Then I asked dante a few questions. I asked him if he had seen Mr. B that morning.

“No, I didn’t see him. I went to the front of the school but he was talking to Corbin so I just went back to the Middle School.”

That gave me my next suspect, Corbin.

“Have you seen Mr. B at all today” I asked.

“Yes, I have. This morning I was walking down the hallway and wanted to talk to Mr. B. I stopped in his office and he was sitting there so I sat down and talked to him.”

“Did you do anything besides talk to him when you were there.”

“No, we just talked about school. I think I might have left my binder in his office.”

After that I went and talked to Mrs. Zastrow.

“Did you see Mr. B at all this morning?”

“Yes. I went in the teachers lounge and was talking with him. As we were talking Andrew came up Mr. B asked him to fill up his coffee.” She said.

“Then what happened?” I asked

“Andrew went to go fill it up. I left the teachers lounge. When I got into the hallway Andrew was walking towards his office to put the coffee in there. I offered to take it there for him.”

“Did you go straight to his office after that.?” I asked

“No.” She replied. I made a quick stop to my room to grab something.

I noticed that she had a wrapper sticking out of her pocket, so I asked if I could see it. She handed it to me and I didn’t know what it was. I looked at it. I could barely make out the words “do not eat” on it. It was old and faded. It seemed like it had been in her pocket for a long time.

My last suspect was Mrs. Roskamp. I asked her if she had seen Mr. B that morning. She said she had gone to his office to talk to him about a student that was troubling her. When she got there Mrs. Zastrow was just leaving, and Mr. B was entering the room after talking to Andrew. Mrs. Roskamp said that she had accidentally left her key in his office. I asked what the key was for, and she said it was to get into the teacher’s lounge.

Jenna– Didn’t like Mr. B. She thought he wouldn’t ever let have any of the students have any fun. She was mad at him for not letting students on their phones during the school day. She always had something mean to say about him.

Joy- She wanted a new principal. She didn’t trust him to make good decisions as principal. She didn’t trust him. She never showed any respect to Mr. B and always told him to leave her alone.

Andrew- Andrew was always spending time in Mr. B’s office. He was quite a troublemaker. At least 3 times a week he would end up sitting in his office for things that he did. He was always starting fights and disrespecting the teachers. Andrew thought that if they had a new principal then he would not be punished as much. He hated getting in trouble but he well deserved it.

Dante- He really didn’t like Mr. B. He thought that he was too old to be a principal of a school. He wasn’t mean directly to Mr. B, but he always talked about him. He always told his friends how annoying he was. He would ignore him and was not very friendly.

Corbin– Had a strong hate for Mr. B. They used to be old family friends. Something happened between them. Ever since then they hated each other. They just ignored each other and pretended the other person didn’t exist.

Mrs. Zastrow- Wanted to be in a more powerful position in the school. She knew that if Mr. B was gone, she would have more power. She would be in charge of the middle school and maybe even get some control over the elementary.

Mrs. Roskamp– She knew that if Mr. B was gone she was have more power in being able to punish kids. She always loved getting kids in trouble and was annoyed that they would always have to be sent to the principal’s office. She wanted to get the kids in trouble.

Solution:

Mrs. Zastrow is the one who poisoned Mr. B’s coffee. She wanted to have more control over the school. She saw that Mr. B had Andrew fill up his coffee, and she knew this was the perfect chance. When Andrew left the teacher’s lounge she quickly offered to bring the coffee to his office. She first went to her room to grab the packet she was going to put in his coffee. She had been working on it for a while, to make it look like it was old incase someone would find the wrapper. She quickly headed to his office, and made sure no one saw her. She put the coffee on the desk, and poured the poison in.

Pythagorean Theorem Project

November30

photo-on-11-30-16-at-8-38-am-2We had to make a 3D model of a way we can use the Pythagorean Theorem in real life. This is what we made. The tree is 10 feet tall, and we put the latter 5 feet away from the tree. We needed to figure out how tall the latter was. It is 11.2 Feet tall. It was not an easy project. It was fun but it was hard to come up with the idea.

Metaphor Writing

November18

I am a snow storm. Every snowflake that falls during a snowstorm is different in their own way. Each snowflake takes a part in making up the snowstorm. There are many things about each snowflake that makes it unique. There are many things about me that make me who I am. Each of my friends and my family have an impact on me. My friends and I are all different, and they all are a part of who I am. I wouldn’t be the same without each of them.

I am also like a snowstorm because snow can make people mad, but I can also make people happy. Some people are mad when it’s snowing and the roads get slippery, but I also bring people joy. From the window, the children of Zeeland screamed and clapped their hands in excitement. Kids love to go play in the snow. It’s so fun to go outside and play in the snow. Sometimes I can make people smile and laugh. Snow can be a pain to people who are traveling, or who don’t like snow, but most people love to play in the snow, and enjoy it.

I am also like a snowstorm because there are good things and bad things in my life. When snow falls, it covers the grass with a white shinny blanket of snow. It can cover up the bad spots in the grass and make it all look nice. When there’s snow on the ground you can’t see how bad the ground actually is. There are things in my life that aren’t easy. There are some bad things that happen. I try to cover it up by pretending it isn’t there, so other people around me might not know. We all have good things and bad things in our life, and sometimes we try to cover them up.

Finally, I am like a snowstorm because a snow storm has wind. Wind can make snow blow all over the place, and sometimes can cause damage. There are gusts of wind in my life; things that can affect me.  In a good way or a bad way. And there is nothing you can do to stop them. When my grandpa died, it was a hard time for me and my family. We didn’t want it to happen but it did. Not everything is going to be how we want it to be. There are also things that can affect me in a good way. Each thing, good or bad, has an impact on who we are.

God Sightings

November7

This weekend I saw God in a lot of different ways. I saw Him through the leaves falling from the trees. They are all red, orange, or yellow. It is so cool to see God’s faithfulness through the changing of seasons. We went to my grandparents house and raked their leaves.

Catching Fire

In the book Catching Fire, there’s a lot of good detail. It has a really good story line, even though you would never want it to happen. The Hunger Games series are really good books, with a good lesson. From these books I take the fact that you never want your government to get out of control. When the people with power are bad people, bad things are going to happen. It made me mad when President Snow made people who already won the hunger Games go back in. It isn’t fair, first of all you shouldn’t have the games in the first place but if they win, why should they have to go back? But when the reaping came, Peeta volunteered for Haymitch.  Through this book I realized how much courage people had.

Some of the conflicts made me worried. One conflict in the book is that President Snow doesn’t believe that Katniss and Peeta actually love each other. He can tell that it’s an act. I feel bad for them because they basically had to put on that act to stay alive, they did what they had to live. Although, in the end of the movie they actually do love each other, and it is not an act. I feel bad that they had to be put under all of the pressure to like each other when they just did it to live, that wouldn’t be what has to happen.

Also, in the end of the book Peeta is taken by the capitol. There was a rebellion against the capitol. When Katniss shot the edge of the arena with a bow, there was an electric shock. The end of the book kind of leaves you at a cliff-hanger. The Capitol has taken Peeta with them, and Katniss doesn’t know it, but she is the one that started the idea of the rebellion. This goes with how bad the capitol is, the rebellion was going to try to change how evil the Capitol was and get rid of the Hunger Games.

Through this book I realized how much courage people had. People were going to go up against the capitol. Even though they know that the Capitol is in control. Also, the people that had to go into the arena, they didn’t want to but they had courage about it. Peeta wouldn’t let Haymitch volunteer for him. Overall I liked this book a lot. The end was kind of confusing and had a lot going on, but it was really important. The Hunger Games series are probably my favorite book series. It’s not something that I ever hope will happen, but they are really good story lines.

photo-on-10-17-16-at-12-57-pm-2In science we had to make a chain.  It has to hold up a bunch of weight. And it can’t touch the ground. Its made out of pipe cleaners and string. We twisted it all together. (I was with Elijah on this project.)

Names of Jesus

October13

This week in Bible we have been studying different names of Jesus. I was assigned “The Bread of Life.” The bread of life means that he is what we need. If you think about it, bread is a common food, and we need food to stay alive. Just like we need christ.  We can’t live without him.  We also talked about weather our name showed Christ’s Humanity or Divinity.  I think ‘The Bread of Life’ talks about Christ’s divinity. When is says the bread, it’s talking about spiritually feeding us. As God, he gives us what we need. Also in the verse it says ‘and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’ God will provide for our needs, and if we believe in him he will help us.

Theme paper

Colossians 3:17

And whatever you do, weather in word or in deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Selfless

I was excited when I realized that our theme was going to be “Selfless”, but I knew it would be a challenge to live by that theme.  The theme “Selfless” is going to be a good challenge for me. To me ‘Selfless’ means that we should put others before ourselves. There are so many times where I want to be first but not many times where I choose to put others first. This year I hope to change that. There are so many little things in life that we can do to be selfless. We all have a selfish nature, but we should work at becoming more and more selfless so that we can be a good example of christ. We came up with the theme of selfless towards the end of 7th grade. We went over to Faith Reformed Church and we all took a bible and we sat and looked through the bible for verses that mean something to us. Then we all chose one of the verses together that we all thought would be a good challenge for our grade. When I heard Colossians 3:17, I immediately knew that was the verse I wanted to pick. I can apply this theme to my life as an 8th grader at Zeeland Christian School and to my life in the community and in the world

This year’s theme can apply to my life here at Zeeland Christian School.  There are many ways I can live out the theme “Selfless” at ZCS. One way I can do that is to just pick up paper or trash in the hallway or classroom even if it isn’t mine. A lot of times I will see something laying around but I just ignore it because I know that it is not mine. Another thing I can do is help out the special needs kids more. It is hard for them to do certain things, and I would love to help them with that stuff more. For example, if someone in a wheelchair is going into a classroom then I can hold the door open for them. Also before I leave a classroom I can ask if there is anything a teacher needs help with. Maybe stacking chairs or picking up trash or something like that. Little things like that can make a big difference.

This year’s theme also applies to my life outside of school. At home there are many way’s I can be selfless. If I see something laying around the house even if it isn’t mine, I can pick it up. It makes everyone elses job a lot easier. I get mad when I see things laying around, so I can easily just pick it up. Also if I see something that needs to be done like the dishes or the laundry, I can do that. If my mom isn’t home I can just help her out with some things around the house without her even asking me. Simple things like that can help other people more than you know.

I can apply this theme to my life as an 8th grader at Zeeland Christian School and to my life in the community and in the world. The theme selfless is going to be a challenge. Everyone is naturally selfish so it is good to try not to be. There are so many incredible ways to be selfless. I am glad this is our theme for my 8th grade year at ZCS. I think this is the most challenging theme for me so far. Hopefully I continue trying to improve even after I am done at Zeeland Christian. Being selfless is a good way to show Christ through you.

Boat

Alliya, Joy and I made a boat together in Science. We mainly made it out of two cups, styrofoam and tin foil. The cups help catch as much of the wind as they can so it will help push it to the end faster. One struggle was getting it to go straight. It kept wanting to turn to the side. After the first trial we changed a few things. We had the cups turned sideways, but for the second trial we turned them the same way. Also for our second trial we added a few Popsicle sticks on both sides to add some wait to the boat.

Summer

August31

This summer we moved so I have been really busy unpacking stuff. I hung out with friends a lot this summer. I love being with my friends…..but I don’t really want to be back at school just yet. I’ve done a lot of babysitting this summer. I love to babysit it is really fun but a lot of work. There was a time this summer when I hung out with a bunch of girls from school. We did tie-dye and went to the beach. It was so fun. I also went to some bonfires. My family went camping multipule times at different campgrounds either with just our family or with some friends.

While the World Watched Responce

June6

Summary

While the World Watched is a really sad book. It’s Carolyn’s story about the Birmingham church bombing. She is a survivor from the bombing. 4 of her friends died in the bombing. The black people were treated so badly, just because of the color of their skin. They were looked down on because they were black. Through the book you can see just about how bad it was but it’s totally different if you have to live that way. Why were the whites so against the blacks? In the book it says that bombings were not even that surprising because they happened often. Martin Luther King Jr made such a difference for all of the blacks. This is such a sad book in many ways but one big way is because this actually happened and this was reality. She tells us her story. Another one of the survivors had a sister that died. She lost eyesight in one eye completely and in the other eye she only had 30% of her vision left. It also talks about her depression. She was strugglin and she kept drinking because it made her feel better. She was really encouraged to stop when her daughter almost got hit by a bus. She never wanted to talk to her husband Jerome about what happened. He didn’t know about her drinking problem until one time he came home from work and she was drinking and she was on the phone with the suicide place. She eventually started to get better and drink less. Finally quite a while after the bombing happened she found out there was going to be a trial for the man who bombed the church. She had to be a witness for the bomber. When the trial happened, nothing she said helped Bobby frank Cherry. He was put in jail. He died in jail.

One thing that stood out to me

One thing that really stuck out to me was how badly the blacks were treated just because of the color of their skin. There were signs that said no blacks, coloreds or dogs. The blacks were not allowed to go to school with the whites and could not eat in a “white person’s” restaurant. The fire department was spraying the water at the blacks when they were having the march. It just makes me sick to see how badly they were treated. So many people were murdered. In the book it talks about a boy who was murdered. His mom decided to have an open casket funeral so that people can see how badly the blacks were treated.

Africian Union Day

May27

Yesterday we did an African union day. We addressed the problem of te refugee camps in Kenya and how Kenya was thinking about closing their camps. We tried to find a solution for this problem My group came to the solution of creating better education, and having refugees work in the refugee camps so they are not a burden but a resource. Countries that have money, like Nigeria for example, can help the refugee camps get better education. I really enjoyed this project. It was hard to come up with a solution that everyone agreed on because all of the countries came from a different background. Some had money, some didn’t, some had a lot of refugees some had none.

Boat Trip

May13
  1. What are three things I learned? I learned how to find the plankton in the water. There is a lot of worms and other living creatures in the water. I also learned how to test the pH of the water. Another thing I learned the difference between oligotrophic, mesotrophic, and eutrophic bodies of water. Oligotrophic is cleaner, eutrophic water is dirtier.
  2. What are two things it made me wonder? It made me wonder Why the water is warmer on the top of the water than it is on the bottom. It also made me wonder why certain parts of the lake are warmer than other parts.

Invictus

April19

I really enjoyed the movie Invictus! It was cool to see how they all worked together and how President Mandela cared so much about the equals of blacks and whites. I loved how in the end everyone was happy and the country was brought together. The whole country was brought together because of rugby. This movie was really inspiring. It taught me to never give up.

Hunting the alps

February17

One thing I learned was that a 60 pound block of gold would be worth $1,500,000. I also learned that Magnets can repel sharks. I also learned that all of the gold ever mined would fit into a single cube about 60 feet on a side. The fact that magnets can repel sharks is my favorite thing that I learned.
