Immigration Day

I talked to two women on Immigration day. One of them, was from Puerto Rico. She came here because she wanted to go to Calvin Collage. She has family all over the world, but she decided to leave her family just to have a better education. I don’t think I would do that. It would take a lot of faith in God to be able to do that. Her name is Ms. Suero and she is a 4th grade spanish immersion teacher at our school. Her story impacted me because she put her trust in God and not in other things like money or people. I don’t know if I would be able to do that. She told us to always try new thing and to go out of our comfort zone. She said that will help us with our faith and help us rely on God more. My group also had a woman from Germany. Her process was a little more difficult to get her visa. She had to wait a longer time and she had to go through more paper work. She moved here to improve her English and she goes to Hope. She is from the northern part of Germany. Her story impacted me because she had to be patient to get her visa. I’m not a very patient and I don’t think I could wait that long for something like a visa. She told us that she suggests going and living abroad to help us understand the rest of the world. I think that someday because of this experience I will study abroad. I think now that immigrants are so cool. They have an amazing story and they are great to listen to. Now that I heard them I want to listen to more immigrants in the future. I also learned that I make a lot of misconceptions. Lots of countries have misconceptions of us but we also have misconceptions of them. For example, when I lived in Mexico I thought that Mexico was all resorts or poor but when I got there I noticed that wasn’t true at all. We did go to resorts and we did stay in extremely poor places, but the place I lived was way different. It was mostly just like America. So I learned that countries aren’t always what you think they are. I hope in the future I don’t think of other countries as bad countries because there are good people in each country no matter what it is. I hope we can do something like immigration day in the future. It was a great experience.
