Thursday Afternoons: On January 9 all students will begin to attend on Thursday afternoons. If you want to add any additional afternoons please let me know at this time! I am looking forward to having two afternoons with the entire class!

Curriculum:

Bible: This week we continued to study the Christmas story and make our Nativity. We learned about the roles that Mary, Joseph, the shepherds and the wiseman played in the birth of Jesus. We also read a book about the joy of giving and how it is more blessed to give than to receive, such a good reminder this time of year!

Word wall word: here – Also in your child’s book bag this week you will find a bag with our word wall words in it for the entire year, these are always a great thing to practice at home! So far this year we have done the following words: I, the, a, look, see, at. go, we, me, up, is, like and here.

Daily 5: This week I was able to meet with every group once. We are working on simple sight word books and continuing to work on letter names and sounds. As your child begins to bring leveled library books home you will see a reading log in his/her bag. On that I will write the books they have taken home as well as any comments as necessary. If you ever have any questions please feel free to write them in the comments section as well. It has been a joy watching your children begin to read!

Writing workshop: This week we learned about lists and what they are used for. We then made our own list of friends. We will be continuing to make lists for the next several weeks. A great activity for home would be to have them put their own Christmas list together!

Phonics: In phonics this week we worked on saying words slowly and writing the sounds we heard on our whiteboard! This was a fun activity for them as they are beginning to see they can write words on their own!

Math: During math centers this week we continued to work with adding more to 5. We used a 5 group penny strip this week to help us add with 5. This is something that can be done at home with pennies.

Up in lights: This week Karson Huffman was Up in Lights. Karson’s mom and dad came and shared all about Karson! We learned some of the fun and exciting stuff Karson likes to do. We also get to see Karson’s dad, Mr. Bryce, everyday at school as he works here! It was fun to have him come to our room as Karson’s dad! We are blessed to have Karson in our class!
