A week in review: May 20-24

Thank you to everyone who came and marched in the parade today what beautiful weather! Thank you as well to all my parent helpers. Your presence was so appreciated. So grateful to those who served our country so that we could have the freedom we enjoy!

We just completed our final full week of Kindergarten! The kids are working hard these last few weeks but you can certainly feel the excitement in the air! We are enjoying our alphabet countdown as well as our PBL studies!

This week I had a substitute for one morning to assess the students’ reading. I am so very proud of the readers they are becoming! Please continue to read with them over the summer. If you are at all interested in tutoring I will be doing it as well as Mary Bronsink. You can sign up on ZCS’website or contact me! You can choose how much or how little you would like to do it. Enjoy your long holiday weekend!

Important Dates:

  • May 27: Memorial Day Parade
  • June 5: Field Trip to the Holland Farmer’s Market
  • June 6: Last day of school

Additional Information:

Our field trip to the Holland Farmer’s Market is quickly approaching. I will be sending out information regarding this in the upcoming week. Also, if you have volunteered to go and haven’t already sent me the number of kids you can take in your car could you please do that.  I would like to determine a way to get us all there in the fewest cars possible as parking can be a bit limited.

WEDNESDAY, May 29 from 2:30-3:20 in the LIBRARY. We are combining with Mrs. Bronsink’s class for our PBL celebration. Families are welcome to join us in the Library to see what your children have learned. Although it is the PBL celebration, this project truly shows the growth that your children have made this whole school year. Their attention, reading, writing and creativity have grown so much! It is fun to watch them use everything they have learned and create something with it. Please note that you will have to check in at the office and there will be many other parents checking in so allow for a little extra time. Thanks!

Sometime in the next week if you could send your child with a gallon size Ziploc bag that is labeled. We will be starting to pack our stuff up as the end of the school year is almost here!

Curriculum:

Bible: This week we studied Saul and his journey to become Paul. We also talked about things we learned about God this year to put in our spiritual journals.

Phonics: We finished our study of the vowels by working on the vowel U.  We also worked on a paper that reviewed word families and rhyming.

Daily 5: This week is the last week I will be sending new books home. Please do your best to send them back on Monday and also look around your homes for any extra ones you may have floating around!

Writing Workshop: We finished up our How to writing. I was so proud of how the students were able to come up with ideas and then the steps to complete them! Their writing has progressed so much this year!

Math: We worked with base 10 blocks to make teen numbers.

Engaging God’s World: This week we continued to work on our PBL projects. Thank you again to all the parents who have helped us! We are excited to show you what we have learned next week!

Afternoons: We were able to work on our PBL projects plus art, quiet time, playtime and parade practice!

A week in review: May 13-17

As your child’s teacher this year I have to say that although I love summer and am excited for days by the pool, bike rides, and trips to the ice cream shop, I will so miss each and everyone of your children. They have been such a joy to teach this year and I am beginning to dread June 6! Thank you for all your support and continue to pray for our class that we will finish strong!

I would like to thank all of the PBL helpers this week! Next week will be another big one as we get our information ready to share with our friends and loved ones! I so appreciate all your help, as this project would not be possible without you!

Important Dates:

  • May 20: N is for night clothes. Please feel free to send your child to school in pajamas or comfy clothes!
  • May 21: O is wear orange day.
  • May 27: Memorial Day Parade
  • May 29: PBL celebration

Additional Information:

On May 27 We do not have school but we do have the amazing opportunity to walk in Zeeland’s Memorial Day Parade. If your child is planning on walking with our class please lmk by Thursday, May 23. I will be sending more information out regarding this towards the end of the upcoming week.

Thanks!

Curriculum:

Bible: This week we finished up with our study of the Fruits of the Spirit and we also read and discussed the story of Peter being freed from jail by an angel. We discussed the meaning of faith and believing in things we can’t always see.

Word Wall Words: blue and purple.

Daily 5: We continued to work in our groups. This week we worked really hard on sliding through the sounds of words or breaking them up and looking for sounds and words we know! I am so encouraged by their ability to begin doing this more and more.

Phonics: This week we talked about the two sounds the vowel “o” makes and also the sounds of the blends “th” and “ch.”

Writing Workshop: This week we continued our “how to” writing as well as writing letters for our “L” day. As you are spending time with your child this weekend encourage him/her to think about the steps it takes to do things in their lives. Something as simple as brushing their teeth or feeding your pet are just a few examples. Next week they will be coming up with their own ideas and it is so helpful for them to be thinking ahead!

Math: We are continuing to work on simple addition and subtraction. This week we worked on adding things we might buy at the grocery store.

Engaging God’s World: For the next few weeks we will be researching and putting together our animal projects. This is such a fun way to see all of the students put so many of their skills together! Thank you again for all your help!

Afternoons: This week in addition to our play and quiet times we worked on our PBL assignments, did some phonics games and went to Market Day! It was a busy week in our Kindergarten class and I am looking forward to the week ahead!!!

A week in review: February 4-8

Enjoying our picnic.

This winter has been unbelievable! Just as we were starting to get into the swing of things again it hands us a delay and another snow/ice day! Despite the weather we were able to get a lot done this week and are working hard. It is a time of year that we see so much growth! There is an opportunity coming up soon to talk to you about your child’s growth. March 5 ZCS will have optional parent/teacher conferences. If you would like to sit down face to face to celebrate your child please sign up (details coming later on that process). We can talk about your child’s spiritual, emotional, and academic growth. If you receive a personal email from me, that simply means I’d like you to sign up for a conference. This doesn’t mean I am necessarily concerned, but that I feel that face to face time would be good. If you don’t receive an email from me, you may still sign up. More details on all of this will come in the next week.

Our picnic was a huge success. Thank you to all who donated fruit! It was fun sharing our salad together! I hope you all had a good week and here’s to hoping that next week feels a bit more “normal!”

Important Dates:

  • February 11: Field trip: For the Kidz Gymanstics
  • February 13: All School Chapel 9 a.m.
  • February 14: Valentines Party
  • February 15-18: No School Mid Winter Break
  • February 22: 100 Day
  • February 28: No PM Elementary Bus
  • March 5: Optional Parent Teacher Conferences

A Few Additional Reminders:

Our Field Trip is scheduled for this Monday February 11 at For the Kidz gymnastics in Wyoming MI. If you signed up to drive please make sure that the office has a copy of both your driver’s license and your proof of insurance before we leave or you will not be able to drive any children. I sent home driver’s guidelines for those who are driving us which need to be signed and returned! Thank you for your willingness to drive and your help in this regard. One other matter of importance is we are in need of car seats so if at all possible if you drive your child to school could you please bring a car seat in for them on that morning or even the day before. That would help us immensely!

We will be starting our new incentive next week. After we fill our jar we will be having backwards day. The kids will be able to wear their shirts backwards, if they choose, and we will be doing our entire day backwards. Starting in the morning by singing our goodbye song!!!

100th Day is approaching soon! It is scheduled as of now for February 25. I will get back to you on that. We will be doing lots of fun activities that day to celebrate the number 100! One thing we will be doing is dressing up like super heroes! Mr. McAboy will be dressing up like Zero the Hero that day and surprising us in our room as well! Please feel free to use anything you have at your home to make your child into a super hero, be creative and have fun! Do not stress about this as all of your children are super heroes already! We just want this to be a fun day for the kids!

For Valentine’s Day we will be having a party from about 11:00-11:45 on the 14th. It would be great if your child brought in valentines to pass out to the whole class (20 students). You do not have to label the “To” section of the valentines just the “From” section. This will make it much easier for the students to hand them out! Also these may be either homemade or purchased, whatever you prefer.

Curriculum:

Bible: This week we studied the story about Jesus blessing the children which culminated in saying our verse Matthew 19:14. We also continued learning about the ministry of Jesus with the story of Zaccheus.

Word Wall Word: come; please continue to practice the word wall words in your child’s bag.

Daily 5: This week I was able to meet with each group once. They should all be coming home with one new book to read. As always, continue to listen and encourage them as they read. Also make sure to practice the blending cards. Some children are still not confident with these because they are unsure of a few letter sounds, so keep working on these too!!! These are all such important parts of becoming good readers.

Math: This week we worked together on putting items together to make a new number. We are continuing to add to our knowledge of addition.

Science: We went outside and observed our motion on the playground. Learning words such as backwards, forward, fast, slow, up, down etc. They enjoyed adding to their knowledge of motion.

Up in Lights: This week Colten VanRoekel. His mom and dad and little sister and brother were able to come and share about him as well as stay for lunch. Colten’s mom also brought a treat for everyone and it was delicious! We are so happy that Colten is a part of our class, his kind heart is loved by everyone!

Practicing our ice-skating!

Afternoons: This week we added a fun dimension to our playtime. We worked together to make a skating/hockey rink. This is great opportunity for the kids to use their math, writing and reading skills as we made a concessions stand, skating “plates” with sizes, and shoe lockers. We will continue to make this an option for play as long as we can keep indoor voices while playing “hockey.” 🙂  We also enjoyed our normal recess, snack and art time as well as being able to do a round of Daily 5 when everyone was present!

Working together at our concessions stand.

A week in review: January 14-18

Kindergarten Days!

It has been another busy and productive week in our kindergarten classroom! We are truly back into the swing of things after Christmas break! We are continuing to work hard while also learning to be good friends and classmates, another very important part of kindergarten! Here are just a few reminders for you. I sent the towels home today to be washed if you could please send them back on Monday. Also library books need to come back on Wednesday for your child to be able to check a new book out. Lastly, I have noticed this week that many students run out of food by our last snack and then they want to share. I am trying to avoid that as there are so many illnesses going around right now. If at all possible throw something extra in your child’s lunch just in case. Thank you in advance for your help with this!

Important Dates:

  • January 21: In service day for all teachers, NO SCHOOL for students
  • January 24: All School Chapel with Cleo Kennedy
  • January 28: Field Trip to For the Kidz gymnastics
  • February 13: 100th Day more details coming soon
  • February 14: Valentine’s Party more details coming soon
  • February 15-18: No school Winter Break

A Few Additional Reminders:

Our Field Trip is scheduled for January 28 at For the Kidz gymnastics in Wyoming MI. I believe I have received all my permission slips already, way to go parents! Also, if you signed up to drive please make sure that the office has a copy of both your driver’s license and your proof of insurance before we leave or you will not be able to drive any children. I will also be sending home driver’s guidelines for those who are driving us which need to be signed and returned! Thank you for your willingness to drive and your help in this regard. One other matter of importance is we are in need of car seats so if at all possible if you drive your child to school could you please bring a car seat in for them on that morning or even the day before. That would help us immensely! I am so looking forward to this field trip and I am sure the kids will love it!

We have only ten bugs to go in our class incentive jar! When we reach our goal we will be having an indoor picnic. I would like to do a “class fruit salad” for this if you would be willing to contribute some of your child’s favorite fruit please let me know!

One final reminder, there is No School on January 21 as there is a professional development day for the teachers.

Curriculum:

Bible: This week we started full swing into our study of the ministry and life of Jesus here on earth. We learned about how Jesus chose 12 disciples and how they picked up everything to follow Him. We also discussed how we are His disciples now and how we can point others to Him by the way we live.

Word Wall Word: and (keep practicing a, at, and, am, go, here, I, is, look, like, me, see the, up, we)

Daily 5: Each child was able to add a new book to their bag this week. Enjoy reading this with them and make sure to send their bag in on Tuesday. In the next few weeks I’m hoping to add some cards with sight words to their bag as well as some cards that will have dots under each letter so they can learn to say each sound slowly and then slide them together to say the word. We will be practicing them at school so they will be able to show you how they work! I am very excited about this!

Phonics: We continued to work on ending sounds this week by playing a game where we matched the ending sound to a letter on the game board.

Math: This week we noticed patterns when we subtracted one. It is simply counting backwards one number. We then talked about how when you add one the pattern just becomes one more. We are continuing to work on simple addition and subtraction with manipulatives. Finally, we learned about a triangle and talked about different things we see that are triangles.

Writing Workshop: Last week we started working on creating pattern books and we will be continuing that over the next several weeks. A pattern book is a book where each page starts with a phrase such as “I like..” or “I see..”. Right now we are simply writing one page on our own but my goal is for them to be able to write a four page book. This week we specifically worked on “finger spaces” between our words as we write.

Engaging God’s World: Gravity was our focus this week. We had so much fun throwing or dropping different sizes and shapes of different items, including a feather, weighted balls, light balls, tissues, paper and pretend block bricks. We learned about the effect gravity has on everything on earth and how whatever we drop always goes down. It was very interesting to see their reactions as they saw the feather and tissue took the longest to drop. Our discussion was amazing and I think we have a lot of mini scientists in our class!

Interactive Read Aloud: We read The Mitten by Jan Brett and sewed a mitten of our own. We learned about sequencing and then retelling the story by putting the animals into the mitten.

Up in Lights: This week Sawyer Ipema was Up in Lights. Sawyer’s mom and siblings came to share about him and his dad came and had lunch with him. We loved looking through his favorite book about dinosaurs and learning from him some of their names. We are so very happy that Sawyer is a part of our class!!

Afternoons: This week we were able to do math centers as well as learn about feelings and that it is ok to be sad or worried or homesick or even to not know how you feel. We also learned that it is ok if your feelings aren’t the same as your friends. We are working on being understanding of the feelings of those around us. In addition we enjoyed our regular play time, quiet time, snack, recess and art!

This is a mini fundraiser for our sister school in the Philippines. If you like to donate please send your gift in a clearly marked envelope by Wednesday, December 19.

The Classroom Christmas Party will be held on December 21. A special thanks to Kristin Tubergan for heading this up! It is always such a fun time for the kids!

New incentive: After finishing filling our bucket of bears and having our pajama day we are now starting a new behavioral incentive! Our reward after 25, yet to be determined, items in our bucket will be a picnic on the floor in our room! I will be bringing in some big blankets and some picnic food on top of whatever your child eats for lunch! It will be a fun and unique experience to all eat “picnic style” together!

Curriculum:

Bible: We continued through the story of Jesus’ birth, learning about the shepherds and the wise-men and then making a replica for our Nativities! Thank you to all the moms who have helped! We couldn’t have done it without you! Many of the children have already said Luke 2:6,7 and have done an incredible job!

Word Wall Word: is

Daily 5: This week we added “read to someone” to our Daily 5! We now have all five options up and running during Daily 5. I was able to meet with all the reading groups at least once this week and I can see their love for reading continuing to grow! The book bags usually go home on Friday but I’m noticing that I often forget to send them home with my Friday half-dayers! This week I am going to try and send them home with everyone on Thursday as Friday will be a busy day in our classroom!

Writing Workshop: We are continuing to work on making lists. This week we worked a bit on brainstorming and coming up with words that remind us of winter!

Phonics: We worked on saying words slowly and writing the sounds we hear. We practiced writing three letter words in the consonant, vowel, consonant format.

Playtime is always a favorite!

Math: This week we went outside for our math lesson. We are working on simple addition and subtraction and we created math equations on the playground. We subtracted as friends went down the slide and added as friends went across the monkey bars!

Interactive Read Aloud: We read Olivia by Ian Falconer and learned about drawing conclusions based on clues in the book.

Engaging God’s World: This week we learned about the difference between wants and needs and how God always provides for us.

Up In Lights: This week Eden Bronsink was up in lights. Eden’s mom visited us from the room next door (she is the other K teacher) and shared pictures and fun facts about Eden and her dad came and read us a book in an amazing accent which the kids loved! She also had lunch with her mom and dad and big sister Elle! Eden adds so much life and joy to our classroom and we are happy she is a part of it!

A week in review: November 26-30, 2018

It feels like I should say welcome back after having almost a week off for Thanksgiving break! Hard to believe our first snow day came in November! Because of the shortened week we were extremely busy trying to get as much done as possible. We are still working on filling our bucket of bears to earn a pajama day. Right now we have 18 bears and are working towards our goal of 25. Once we reach 25 I will let you know and give you a date to send your child in their pajamas! Also, if they prefer not to wear their pajamas that is absolutely fine, they are welcome to just wear comfy clothes. This week also begins the start of the Christmas season and lots of fun activities to go along with it! I am so looking forward to the next few weeks in our kindergarten room! Please take time to enjoy this season with your family!!

IMPORTANT DATES

  • December 20: All school chapel at 9:00. You are all welcome to come and the kindergarteners will be leading!!
  • December 21: Class Christmas Celebration! More details to come.
  • December 24-January 4: Christmas break

A Few Additional Reminders:

JINGLE JOG: The last week before Christmas break we will have a Jingle Jog. This is a fun run that Mrs. Miller has her gym classes do every year. The class will have an opportunity to run around the gym and through the hallways and families are welcome to come and cheer their kids on! As of now I do not know the exact date but will let you know as soon as I do! The purpose of this fun event is to raise money for our sister school in the Philippines.

NATIVITY SCENE: This week we will be beginning our project! Two things we are still short of are rubber bands and a bag of cotton balls. If you happen to have any extra at home and would be willing to part with them it would be a big help in creating our project. Thank you in advance as this is a big help!

BOOK BAGS: Every weekend your child should be coming home with his/her book bag. They are all starting to read books now from our leveled library and should have them in their bag. Please take time to read them with your child, as they are very excited to be reading books by themselves, and return them on Monday. They are proud readers!!!

VOLUNTEERS: For this upcoming week the only volunteer I have listed is for the Tuesday lunch. If you are signed up to volunteer at a different time this week please let me know and I will try to adjust our schedule accordingly. Thank you for your help and understanding in this regard.

CURRICULUM

Bible: This week I introduced our new Bible verses, Luke 2:6-7. “While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in swaddling cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” We started our talk about Jesus’ birth but we will fully dive into this beautiful story next week as we begin our Nativity scene project.

Word Wall Word/Morning Work: up

Daily 5: This week we added another activity to our Daily 5 called word work. This allows your children to have more exposure to letters or words through either the ipad, worksheets or manipulatives. This has made our Daily 5 a busy but rewarding time in our day.

Writing Workshop: This week we started working on how to make a list and what we can use lists for. So far we have done a list of friends and a list of colors. We also finished up our drawing and labeling unit and all of the students were able to “fix and fancy” their favorite story and share it with the whole class on the “big screen” by way of the projector! I also find this to be a great way to expose them to public speaking at a young age! They did amazing!

Phonics: We incorporated phonics into our writing workshop this week. When we worked on our lists together we said words slowly which allowed us to hear many of the sounds in them. They are starting to realize that they can spell by listening to sounds!

Up in Lights: In the last few weeks we have gotten to know more about Dominick Terpstra, Avaleigh Dykema and Elsie Wiersema. It has been so fun to get to know a bit more about them and what they enjoy! It has also been so nice to have parents and siblings join us for lunch! We all look forward to this part of the week and I am so grateful for each member of this class!

Afternoons: Now that everyone is here all day on Tuesday we are able to so some of our everyday curriculum on Tuesday afternoon which is such a blessing during this busy time of year! This past Tuesday we worked on our “Book of Friends” and have just a few more friends to go! The kids absolutely love spelling their friends’ names and drawing their picture to go with it! We also continue to have quiet time and play time (which was extra fun this past week as I was able to bring some different toys from my house 🙂 ). In addition this week we had all school singing, art and math centers.

As always, if you need anything please don’t hesitate to text or email me. Praying that you all enjoy this special season with your families!

Thanksgiving Week

This past week was an incredible one in Kindergarten; I feel as if we are all adjusting to this transition very well and the kids are so eager to learn!

As I am stepping into this new role I am trying a few different things. One thing you may hear about is our bucket of bears. This is an incentive for the kids to transition quickly and quietly. When they do a great job I put a bear in the bucket. When they receive 25 bears they will be rewarded with a pajama day in which they may also bring a small stuffed animal or small pillow. We have also started a tally mark “game” where I receive a tally for calling someone by the wrong name (which is made a bit harder because there are twins in the class!) After 20 tallies the kids will receive a small treat. Your children seem to respond well to these types of incentives and we can also use the incentives for opportunities for us to practice counting by fives and counting on!

I am looking forward to this coming week and the wonderful holiday that it brings; so very thankful for all the love and support I have received from you and for the opportunity to teach your amazing children! God is good!

IMPORTANT DATES

  • November 20: All school chapel (9am)
  • November 20: Friends-giving Celebration(see below)
  • November 21-23: Thanksgiving vacation

A Few Additional Reminders:

Friends-giving Celebration: Please remember to send in 20 bite sized pieces of your child’s favorite food on Tuesday morning. I welcome you to be as creative or simple as you wish. Please send the food in pre-cut and ready to eat. If it is a food that should be eaten warm you could send it in a thermos or a glass container. Thanks for helping us celebrate Thanksgiving together.

School wide Thanksgiving Donations: We will be supporting Parkview Home and Harvest Stand Ministries this Thanksgiving season. Household items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash, shampoo, toilet paper, paper plates and cleaning supplies may be dropped off in the hallway during the next week.

Nativity Project: In December we will begin our Nativity project. Please bring in a shoe box with your child’s name on it and at least 6 toilet paper tubes inside of it by Wednesday, November 28. I will be sending a sign up genius out soon for help in class making the characters as well as the material needed for them.

Volunteers: If you have signed up to volunteer this week and haven’t talked with me please let me know. I think I have touched base with everyone for this week. I will still need my Tuesday lunch volunteer as we will be continuing to have our grade level meetings on Tuesday at noon! I am hoping to have a bit more clarity with this after the holiday. Thank you for your patience!

Curriculum

Bible: This week we continued our stories on Abraham and Isaac. We were also able to say our Bible verse, Genesis 8:22. There were a few who were gone when we said this who will get a chance to do it this week.

Word Wall Word/Morning Work: we

Handwriting: Z,C and O

Daily 5 (Read to Self/Work on Writing/Listen to Reading): We were able to do two rounds of Daily 5 in a row for the first time this week. We continue to listen to reading, work on writing and labeling, read to self and work in groups with me. Their stamina is continuing to grow and I am hoping to introduce the last two parts(read to someone and word work) of Daily 5 this week! In December we will use our work on writing time to write Christmas cards, if you want to cut the fronts off of any cards you receive the kids love to write on those like they are postcards! Please send them in anytime!

Writing workshop: We are continuing to work on labeling both as we write and with extra activities.

Interactive Read Aloud: This week we read Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey and practiced predicting what might happen next. We also tried blueberries afterwards and I found out that many of my kindergarten friends don’t like blueberries!

Exploring God’s World: This week we continued learning about God’s earth. We predicted whether or not the earth was more water or land and then played a fun game to figure it out! We passed an inflatable globe around and charted where our fingers landed. It was so fun to see their reactions as we found out there is definitely more water!

Math: This week we took a test like older kids would do! We spread out around the room as I guided each question. The kids did amazing and I am thrilled with their knowledge from the last unit!

Afternoons: We are working on a daily routine for the afternoons. Mondays and Wednesdays we will be doing math centers and Tuesdays and Thursdays we will be doing literacy activities. This week we made a class Thanksgiving book of things each student was thankful for. The books we make as a class are some of their favorites to read! We have also continued grocery store during play time as well as art center which is a favorite! If you have any extra beads at your house feel free to send them in they love making bracelets and necklaces!
