Egg Tower

  1. No picture. 🙁
  2. We worked really well as a team, and our tower held up the egg for the full ten seconds required.
  3. Our tower measurements were a little off, and the tower didn’t meet the required height.
  4. My favorite part was probably watching the eggs on the earthquake simulators. I also found it really fun getting to design the tower.
  5. My least favorite part was the budget, it made building the structure more difficult and stressful. I feel like some of us could have learned more had we had unlimited supplies.

Ideal Church vs. Early Church

There is a big difference between our ideal church, and the early church. The ideal church consists of materialistic wants, the desire to enjoy the time in the church, the idea of worshipping comfortably, and food. The early church consists of mainly of being together, and having fellowship with other believers. The early church was very intentional about sharing their possessions and inviting people into their homes.

Personally, I really enjoyed taking a look into the similarities and differences of the two churches. I wish I could’ve been alive during the Early Church era.

Science Exam Review Friday, January 8

unnamed

Noah and I did our Exam Review Project for Math about a board game called Sugar Soda Rush. In the story problem, Santa’s top toymakers, Lala and Lola, are given the task to make a new board game called Sugar Soda Rush. Lala and Lola know that the length of the board game is 12 inches, and the hypotenuse is 14 inches. They have to figure out the width of the board game, in order to build. On our representation, is the front of the board game, which then turns over and shows the exact measurements. Along each side are the steps in order to solve the problem. Along with Christmas theme drawing and representations, the problem solver receives a jovial christmas atmosphere. I enjoyed doing the project, and I had a lot of fun coming up with the problem.

Weekend Reflection November 23

Well this weekend, I had the opportunity to go to Ditto with the Philippines team. As probably heard in the news, many Syrian refugees have traveled to West Michigan. One of the Mom’s at ZCS happens to be connected with five of these Syrian families. Sadly, they had to leave on such short notice that they didn’t bring or have things for the winter such as coats, boots, hats, and gloves. On Saturday, all of these families came to Ditto to shop for their families and they’re children. While the Moms were shopping, we as a team had the opportunity to take care of the kids, play with them, and eat with them. There were about twelve of them in total from ages 3-11. The only catch was that none of them could speak any English. Through God, we were able to communicate with them and build relationships with them. I think the best part of the whole day was getting to know Renim and Laina, who were some of the kids we took care of, and bonding with them and the Philippines team. In the end, we had a huge snow ball fight with the kids, because they had never seen snow before. It was so much fun and I can’t wait to see them again.

Thoughts About Jesus’ Crucifixion

I have really enjoyed studying Jesus’ crucifixion, and I can’t wait to continue learning about what is was like. I think the last seven words are really cool, and could  be a great inspiration for us. The last words are kind of like Jesus’ last commands for us.

God Sightings November 9

This weekend, I experienced God through Mark Timmer. I go to a very old church, and for the past year and a half, we have been searching for a new pastor. We finally managed to find a suitable candidate, and this was Mark Timmer. Pastor Mark preached on Sunday, and exceeded my expectations. He was funny, relatable, and easy to understand. He talked about how God puts us through hard times, but when we go through these things, he is always with us. I look forward to seeing Pastor Mark in the future.

The book that I will be writing about is Wonder, written by R.J. Palacio. This book taught me that bullying is a very serious problem and that words can make a huge impact. The book is about a boy named August who looks very different from most of us. His face has a rare problem that makes his face look “deformed.” Because of this deformity, kids usually try to avoid him and are scared by the way he looks. August had been homeschooled until in 6th grade, when the book takes place, that he decides to transfer to one of the local schools. In the book, we learn how August copes and embraces the bullying, new friendships, hard teachers, and academic adventures! August is a great boy, who was born to do even greater things.

This book taught be me that bullying is a very serious problem and that words can make a huge impact. The book shows many of examples of how August was consistently bullied by the students, and even some of the kids whom he thought were his friends. The first scene that comes to mind for me was a day a couple weeks into the school year. One morning, as August had been walking through the hallway at the beginning of the day, he bumped into one of the other students. Naturally, the hallways were filled and it was inevitable that kids would be bumping into each other as they walked to their classes. However, a couple seconds after August had bumped into this person, another student yelled, “You got the touch! Go wash your hands!” At that insant, the kid that August bumped into, ran into the bathroom, washed their hands, and ran back out with relief. In that instant, August’s eyes were opened. He hadn’t noticed that all of the students intentionally didn’t walk near him, and ran away when he touched them. August had ‘the touch’. The moment August realized, he burst into tears and left school to go home. He knew he looked different, but he hadn’t realized that students were scared and grossed out by him. The students had been bullying him. The words of the kids had made a terrible impact on August.

This book taught be me that bullying is a very serious problem and that words can make a huge impact. The second scene of which I saw this theme was when a very sweet girl named Summer sat by August in the lunchroom. During the first couple days of school, August entered the cafeteria and had nobody to sit by. When he would go to sit at a table, the kids sitting there often moved to another table, leaving him sitting alone. Until one day, when a gentle, humble, beautiful, girl named Summer came and sat by him in the lunchroom. At first, August hadn’t spoken to her much, for he was very shy. But everyday she would come back and sit by him. All her friends were opposed to the kind act, and wished for her to go back and sit by them again, but Summer refused. Because of this kind act, her and August slowly became very good friends. She would ask him questions, and he would quietly respond. Summer and August grew close to each other…leading the other students to ask themselves, “Is August really all that bad?” These kind actions changed August and his school experience. He was impacted in such a way that some of the other boys would come and sit by him and Summer.

This book taught be me that bullying is a very serious problem and that words can make a huge impact. Last but most certainly not least was August’s best friend, Jack. Jack appeared to August throughout the whole book. We see him in the beginning as a boy who was asked to be part of a ‘Welcoming Committee’ for August along with some of the other students. Jack quickly becomes part of August’s life. They, along with Summer, get along all very well and become amazing friends. Jack often sat with him at lunch, and stook up for him when the other kids, especially the boys, would bully him. Jack and August, like any friendship, hit some really rough patches. On a Friday of October, all the students dressed up in their halloween costumes for school. August had dressed up as a ghost (I think) which hid his identity. As he walked into his classroom for first period, he heard one of the boys talking about. He was saying how annoying, ugly, and weird August was; and much more. Immediately taken back by the comments, August cried underneath his costume and sat down in his seat. Until he realized that the boy talking about him was Jack. Jack, who August thought was his friend. August didn’t speak to Jack for several weeks, and refused to work with him at school. However, Jack made up for his mistake. Jack told August the truth; that he in fact was only trying to be cool in front of the other boys. August felt better, and slowly but surely, Jack and August became friends all over again. Jack’s words both tore August down, but had the power to lift him back up again.

This book taught be me that bullying is a very serious problem and that words can make a huge impact. In conclusion, this book without a doubt had a lot of powerful lessons to be learned. It was one of my favorite books and I am so happy that I had the opportunity to read it. Although words can be serious problem, that cause a lot of bullying… they are also the most powerful things we have. We can build each other up higher than money, clothes, or popularity ever could. I loved the book, and believe that words can change the world.

God Sightings

I saw God over the weekend through downtown Zeeland. Living in downtown Zeeland, I get to see a lot of people and families. As I long boarded and biked through the small town, I loved seeing everybody’s happy faces. With the leaves falling and all the kids running around, it was a very peaceful weekend filled with the holy spirit.

The glasses card reminds me of the new job I started this summer at my church. Every Tuesday at 1 o’clock I would walk to my church that sat just a couple houses away from my house. The job was anything but easy. The church looked as old as Abraham Lincoln, and the services weren’t any better. My church is very old, but beautiful with all of it’s old charm. My job was to help our worship coordinator plan out each of the Sunday morning services. We would decide on the songs, banners, and design the bulletin. It was hard work, but I enjoyed playing a part in the planning of the service. Going into the job, my goal was to make a change that would benefit the youth at the church. Being such an old church community, most of the sermons and services were directed towards the elderly. I could practically hear the children and teens screaming for help as they sat through the long services. This job has been a huge blessing to me and I’ve begun to understand why the church does some of the things that it does. I enjoy the work and look forward to seeing where this job leads me.

The anchor reminds me of the week I spent at Camp Geneva, and how every morning we had to go ‘polar bearing’ in big pine lake. This summer, and summers before, I’ve gotten to go to Camp Geneva for a week with an amazing group of girls. This summer was very special, as we welcomed some new girls into our cabin, and had an amazing counselor. One of my favorite memories of camp was jumping into Big Pine Lake every morning at 7 o’clock. The lifeguard would come and wake us up, and we had only a couple seconds to be in our swimsuits and at the beachfront ready to jump in. Our cabin, along with all of the others, decided to make our entry into the water more fun rather than just jumping in. One of the mornings, we performed the Disney classic, Cinderella, and another morning we played out the Hunger Games. I can vividly remember the sound of Abby’s scream as we jumped into the freezing cold water every morning. It was hilarious! The water felt cold like Antartica, but the warm showers afterwards warmed me up as if I had never gone into the lake in the first place. Camp Geneva is such a blessing and everyday I wish I could go back. We made so many good friends. Some of our favorites were kids who go to Cityside and Creekside. Since we were all from Zeeland, we referred to ourselves as the ‘Z-Squad’. 🙂 I can’t wait till next year when I get to go to Camp again.

The money card reminds me of all the fundraising I did over the summer for my trip to the Philippines. This coming April, I’ll be going on the Philippines trip with school and need to raise $2,750 by then. This summer, I dedicated a lot of my time to raising this money. Most of my time was spent babysitting. I babysat for lots of people around Zeeland (and continue to do so). Babysitting was one of my favorite pass times this summer. I love taking care and being around all of the little kids. They’re innocent like angels (well some of the time that is). God has blessed me so much and I’m almost done with the fundraising. It definitely wasn’t easy having to spend so much of my free time doing fundraising, but I know that the more sacrificial the process is, the more I will get from the experience when it’s done. I spent a lot of days hanging out with one of the little boys I babysit for. We would always go to the ZCS park. It was so much fun! The only thing I didn’t enjoy was changing the dirty diapers. They smelled worse than a skunk! But it’s all going to be worth it. Overall it was a great summer and I hope the summers to come are much like this past one.

“Therefore anyone who hears these words of mine and puts them

into practice is like the wise man who built his house

on the Rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew

and beat against that house; yet it did not fall because

it had it’s foundation on the Rock”

Matthew 7:24-25

Every year, the seventh graders are challenged with the task of coming up with a them for their following eighth grade year. As we sat in our little circle, which consisted of only about fourteen people, coming up with theme possibilities, I couldn’t help but be curious what we would come up with. I was very happy when Mr. Buteyn announced that our them was indeed, ‘Built On The Rock.’ Our theme, ‘Built On The Rock’, has always meant a great deal to me both as a student at ZCS, and as a christian of God’s world.

As an eighth grader at Zeeland Christian, and being on the eighth grade planning team, sometimes being a leader can be overwhelming. At the beginning of the year, the teachers put a lot of pressure on everyone about leading by example. I was very happy at the end of the seventh grade year to find that Matthew 7:24-25 was our theme verse. As a teenage girl, it can become very easy for me to forget about everybody else, especially God. When I am playing a sport, or get a good grade on a paper, I find that it’s hard to remember that everything that I do is to God’s glory, not mine. I love this verse because as I lead small groups, or talk to Mrs. Roskamp about the eighth grade planning team, I am reminded that I must dedicated my whole life to God and stay firm on him. I love the reminder of staying firm in God. There has been a lot of prayer requests that have been said in my classroom, about sad things that are going on in our lives, but if we remember to stay firm and faithful in God’s love, he will show himself and pull through for us.

I have to admit, it’s a crazy thought to imagine that millions of people, hundred of thousands of miles away, are worshipping the same God I am. It’s incredible to imagine that people that are on the other side of the world, might be sitting at the side of their bed praying to God, at the same time I am. I can’t even begin to imagine or think about what God has planned for me as far as being a Christian in his World. This year, I’ll be traveling to the other side of the world with Mr. Vandyk and the rest of the Philippines team, and to be honest, the thought hasn’t yet felt real to me. It hasn’t become a reality. God wants to send me to the other side of the world, to be with and help people I haven’t even met. How incredible is that? I believe that it’s not my calling to be a missionary or a preacher, but I do believe that God will change people’s lives through some of my actions, and I can’t wait to watch his kingdom grow as the years go on. I hope that someday, I will make an impact on children and people, just as some very important people in my life have made on me. This is my Father’s world, and glorifying him in it and through it is one of my greatest desires.

Cooper 2

Our theme, ‘Built On The Rock’, has always meant a great deal to me both as a student at ZCS, and as a christian of God’s world. As I look forward at the year to come, I have no idea what God has planned for the teachers, for my fellow students, and for me, but I am completely overjoyed and satisfiend knowing that he is in control of everything that will be going on at Zeeland Christian School. And, as I look forward from a more broad perspective, I can’t wait to see what God has in store for our city, country, and universe. I would like to give this whole year, and the years to come, to God.

New Addition

I think that the new addition is very cool and very welcoming. This year, I hope that as an 8th grade we will lead well by respecting the furniture and the new school building. I love how there are glass walls and that we can open up the classrooms between each other. The furniture in the common area is super nice to have when we have to do group work and individual activities. I’m looking forward to seeing how the new building will work out this coming year. I think the teachers, students, and staff will enjoy the new space. I know how much work has gone into the building, and I am super grateful for all the people who have put so much time and dedication into the building.

Apartheid de Sudáfrica

Photo on 6-3-15 at 9.36 AM

Poems

Book by Leah Cooper

My family is a book.

My Mom is the outside of the book. She holds us all together and keeps us in place, where we should be.

My Dad is the author. He loves coming up with fun family adventures and using his mind to figure things out.

Maggie is the illustrator. She loves being creative and giving us a great visual about life.

I am the end of the book. The last chapter. I love putting a great twist on things and giving others their happy ending.

Summer by Leah Cooper

I’m so excited summer is here

So now I can lay out in the sun

With friends from far and near

I can play until the day is done

My pool goes for an infinity

I get to walk on the burning sand

I can swim across the sea

Until I reach dry land

Mi Viaje a Europa

Bon dia!

Me llamo Adele Ferrari.

Me fui a España, Portugal, Italia, y Bélgica.

The Price Is Right

The past two weeks we have been learning about probability with Mrs. Zastrow. We spent several class periods watching the TV game show, “The Price Is Right.” After watching “The Price Is Right” games, we were given the task of creating our own game based on probability. After we completed our game, we had to present our game to our other classmates.

The past 2 weeks, I learned about probability. I learned that in the TV show game, PLINKO, there is no probability, but it’s all luck. I also learned that several of the games in “The Price Is Right” have a very low probability of being won by the contestant. The key to making these games is for there to be less than a 50% chance of being won by the contestant. Most of the games in “The Price Is Right” have a very low chance of being won.

Between group math and individual math through IMath, I got to see many similarities and differences between the two. In IMath we go at our own pace, where as with a group we all work together and say at the same pace. For example, if I had done this individually, there is a good chance it would’ve been done in less or more time. Since we did it as a group, we all got done at the same time. As far as learning more or learning less, I think I learned about the same as I would’ve in IMath, if anything I learned a little less. I definitely enjoyed this. Photo on 3-20-15 at 11.07 AM

Debate De Ser Independiente

Leah Cooper contra John Heyboer lll y Patti Heyboer

Desigualdad Espacial
