God at Work

In Bible class, we have been talking about Paul’s ministry. There were some different things that helped him in his ministry.

  1. Since Paul was a pharisee he had knowledge of scripture and the Torah.
  2. He knew many of the languages and he was exceptionally bright.
  3. He was a missionary to the Gentiles (non Jews) because he believed the Jews already knew the story and were religious.
  4. He had Roman and Jewish citizenship.

How has God been at work for you, and what elements of your past may God use to further his kingdom? God has been at work by being there in tough and hard situations. He always knows what’s best and what I need. Mrs. Williams told us a story about when they adopted her sister, she said that when she is a mom, she would love to adopt. And it made me think about my aunt, because she also adopted my cousins now. They are wonderful and it’s so nice when I get to see them. And when I grow up, I think it would be so fun to adopt.

Science Volcano Reflection

In Science class, we have been talking about volcanoes. We decided to make a cinder cone volcano. We also made a poster. In our volcano, we have labeled a couple different things. We labeled pyroclastic flow, magma chamber, vent, side vent, crater, cinder layers, and pipe. We have decided to do Diet Coke and Mentos.

Uzbekistan Reflection

In bible class, we have been talking about Christian Persecution. We got to make presentations, posters, and we were able to talk about it on Friday in the afternoon. We got put into a group to make the “project.” We did ours in Mrs. Roskamp’s room and we had a tour about the information about it. Ryanne and Maggie were in my group. Maggie was in charge of the tour, Ryanne was in charge of the game and I was in charge of the tickets and waiting by the door for people. We also made a giant dice and that was part of the game. They rolled the dice to see what number they got and that would determine what question they had to answer. They also got a chance to write letters to people being Persecuted Christians.

Spaghetti Tower

We went with the pyramid style for our tower. At the top of it, there is a nest to secure the egg, made with smaller spaghetti noodles and tape around it. We also taped the bottom of the tower to the cardboard, so it stays in place and doesn’t move around. I think that it will do good tomorrow, because the marshmallow’s are all hard, so they will help with the strength, and the way that we made it.

Math Project

We had to do project on the Pythagorean theorem.  We are trying to figure out how to fit a triangular gymnastics mat on a shelf. The mat has legs that are 3 ft by 4 ft, we still need the measurement for the hypotenuse. The shelf has a length of 8 square feet. Will the gymnastics mat fit on the shelf?

This is love-not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his son, as an atoning sacrifice for our sins, dear friends since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

-1 John 4:10-11

I always wondered what our grade would pick for a theme verse in 8th Grade. When your in 8th grade at Zeeland Christian, the 7th graders going into 8th grade get to pick the theme verse for the year, and it is really an important thing, because over the year, we talk about the verse, memorize, and do it. So if it’s lost in love, then we will do things to be that verse. (Example: picking up trash off the floor in a classroom after class.) We can show our theme, Lost in Love, to others in our school and to people in the world.

I can show this theme this theme many ways at school. An example of this would be: picking up things off the floor after class for the teacher, because sometimes kids don’t always pick up the stuff that they drop on the floor, or they just talk to friends when you’re supposed to be cleaning up. Since we have a new addition in our school, that means we got new carpet. There have been a lot of spills, and crumbs that kids stepped on and our in the carpet, so since we have new carpet, we need to make sure we are keeping it nice. Another example would be: stacking the chairs on the tables, we have someone who cleans the floors and vacuums for us in our school, and it really helps when we stack the chairs so that they don’t have to do that. We might think that stacking the chairs doesn’t really make a difference, but it does for the people who are giving their time to clean our classrooms. Another example would be: holding the door for someone when they are walking into class. Sometimes we have our hands full, or we have books in our hand, and it’s really nice when someone takes the time to open the door for you. Holding the door is so easy, so if you wanted to do something for lost in love, it could be as easy as that. And my last example would be: asking the teacher if they need help with anything. Sometimes the teachers have a lot to do, and sometimes it’s nice if you walk to the printer for them to grab some papers, or even walking around the room and picking up garbage, or straightening the books on the shelf.

As Christians, we can also show this theme to the world. There is a lot going on in the world, and we need to keep everyone in our prayers. The people who are affected by the hurricane, or who are in the hospital, etc. We can also show this theme by making people in our community or lunch, or the people who don’t have a lunch. Sometimes it is so easy to just think about ourselves and not others. But our theme says, “since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” And when we do things for other people, that is showing them love. In this world, there are a lot of people who do not have homes, or money to buy food, or a place to stay. And we can help them by picking up a lunch for them, or making one, or buying them some blankets for at night, even if you gave something small to someone in need, it would make

them feel important, because they would know people care about them. Another way to show our theme would be to help out at a church event, maybe volunteering at Vacation Bible School in the summer, or for nursery in our Church to help out with the little kids. Another way to show our theme would be to ask someone you know (neighbors, family, cousins, etc.) if they want you to just watch / babysit their kids for them so they can go out to dinner or something.

We can show our theme, Lost in Love, to others in our school and to people in the world. I think that it is really important to help others, and not just worry about ourselves. I am so excited that we picked the theme “Lost in Love” and I can’t wait to see how we get to act out our theme throughout the year.

Beginning of the year Reflections

I have enjoyed a lot of things we do in 8th grade so far. I really enjoy being the leaders (oldest) students in the school. Which means being the oldest in family groups & small groups. I also enjoy Science class on Friday because we have a time where we just ask questions. And it can be about anything, it doesn’t have to be about Science. I have also learned a lot in school this year so far, I have learned that being the oldest is kind of a big deal, because all of the younger kids look up to you and what you do during chapels. I am looking forward to a lot of things this year. I am looking forward to all the events we will get to do as an 8th grade, going Bowling, 8th Grade Banquet, and some other fun events.

Science boat races

We had to make a boat with certain supplies that we were given. Our boat is called “The Wave Riders.” Our first trial time was 16.62 seconds. The first trial went well, I think it could have gone better. Our boat made it to the end, but we came in 5th place. Some of the changes we are going to make will be, taking the two sticks off the front, and putting them on the side. I am hoping that our boat will get a better time then the first trial, and that we will make it to the end successfully.

Summer

This summer was a lot of fun. I got to go to New-York with my family at the beginning of summer, we got to go into New York City and walk around and go to the statue of liberty. We went camping with my family and grandparents at Holland State Park. We go camping every summer and it is a lot of fun. We also rented a cottage on Big Star Lake with my extended family and it was a lot of fun. We went tubing, went on boat rides, had campfires, played games, and a lot of other fun things. I also just relaxed and hung out with friends this summer. Summer went by really fast but it was a fun summer. I also babysat a lot this summer. I babysit my cousins which is a lot of fun.

Book Review

Live Original, By: Sadie Robertson. This book is a  biography. The book is doesn’t really say where it’s taken. The author makes me feel like I am a lot like some of the things in the book, because of the connections. If I close my eyes, I don’t know if I would be able to tell where the setting is. The author makes you feel like your a part of the book, and it is really cool when you have personal and life connections.

There’s not really any “main” characters. But there is people who she talks about a lot. She talks about her dad, uncle, mom, and a couple other people. I like the characters, when she talks about her dad, and uncle, they sound fun and she has a  lot of stories from them.

This book is a good book if you like biography’s. Because theres not really a huge story, it is just inspiration, ideas, and how to live original. A lot of us are trying to figure out who we are in middle school, so if you read this book, there’s a lot of ideas, inspiration.

I think that people should read this book in 7th grade. I give this book 5 stars, because it was a really good book, and it was fun to read and make connections. My opinion on this book, is just amazing. Because she gives a lot of advice, and stories in her life, good and bad. We all have those down days, and so did she. And it talks about that in the book. I feel like this is just a relaxing book to read.

African Union Day

  1. Identify 2+ issues that were debated in trying to impact democracies. Do you think these would make a positive difference? One of the issues that was debated was portable voting booths. And I think that this would make a positive difference, because some people who wanna vote, can’t, because of where they live and they don’t have access to vote.
  2. What did you enjoy? I enjoyed just being with everyone as a grade, and just having fun defending our countries.
  3. What was the hardest part of this project? The hardest part of this project was standing up in-front of everyone and saying things about your country, and saying your ideas.

Africa Intro. Activity

Some things I learned was that there was so much poverty in Africa. I knew that it was not a rich country, but I didn’t know that it was that poor. I also didn’t know that there were over 400 languages in Nigeria. We are so used to only having to speak one language, and when I heard that the people in Nigeria had to learn a lot of languages, It just made me think about that it would be kinda hard. I already knew about the wildlife, I don’t know everything about it, but I knew that they had cool wildlife. We didn’t really talk about the wildlife. Some of the questions I have are.. I wonder what it’s like to live somewhere where you see wildlife often. I wonder what the weather is always like.

The Eagle Huntress

The movie was about how the girl wanted to be an eagle huntress. And I think that is really cool, because in that, it was normally men who would eagle hunt. So it was about all her practices, and it was about her way up to the Eagle fest. Everyone was very shocked and surprised that there was a girl who was in it. And she did really well and she came in first place. I think this is important because of the lesson, that girls can do anything. Because everyone thought that a girl would not be able to do it. Lessons, try your best no matter what people tell you or say.

Favorite Film

My favorite film was probably “Strong Water.” I liked this one because of the story. I thought it was cool how they took a place that was not that popular and didn’t have much people, and started to make waves and go surfing, and then people were coming and watching. In the film, it was about those people who went surfing. They used to kayak and then they started to surf. I think it was important because we can learn to be outside more, and if there is a community that is not that exciting and doesn’t have much people, we can turn it around and do something fun with it for you and the community.

Camp Reflection Day

Psalms 139:14
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

How many people have doubts about this verse; that they are wonderfully made? My reflection about this verse is about the doubts people have. I think that this verse is a good reminder to us sometimes. When we are not feeling welcomed, or special, or etc. But we need to remember that Jesus died on the cross for us and that we are wonderfully made. I think that this is meaningful because we all need this reminder sometimes, and sometimes the shortest sentences and only a couple words can really be meaningful and powerful.

Some of our goals at 7th grade camp were to be a fun class. Sometimes we can get distracted from class, because we are having a good time and having fun, but sometimes it’s hard for us to get back and focused. Another goal was being a welcoming class because when we had the Guatemalen’s, we were welcoming 🙂 And we have to be welcoming to those who don;t have someone to sit by at lunch, or who don’t have someone to hang out with at recess. Some of the other goals were to be a respectful class, a hard working class. I think that we are doing ok on that for being respectful, but sometimes we don’t show respect sometimes to some teachers and other kids when they are talking. I think that we are doing ok on our goals. I think that we just need that reminder to be welcoming to people. I think that I should be welcoming more also, so when I see someone who’s alone, go say “hi” or something. I think that I am going to work on being welcoming and fun.

Theme 8 – Salute to a king

Salute to a King: My visual is a guy with his hand on his forehead saluting, because that is what the theme is. And There were a lot of kings back then, Nagid, a king who helps people follow God. And Melek is a military king. Israel wanted a malek, but God wanted a  nagid, we sometimes want a king, but when you think about it, God is our king, and he is the one who loves us, helps us, and is there for us no matter what. So whenever you are scared, trust God and pray to him. He always is there to listen to us.

Theme 7 – Sent to Promised Land

Sent to promised land: My visual is the word TRUST in big, black bold letters. In my own words, this is basically saying that we need to trust God no matter what happens. Because he is always there for us, and sometimes it is hard. But some examples from the bible are.. Israelites trusting God for crossing Jordan and Jericho. They had to trust that God would lead them through safety. Sometimes it is hard to trust, but we need to do it, because it makes a difference.

Theme 6 – Symbol of a Lamp

Symbol of a Lamp: My symbol is a candle, because we can light someone’s day up. In my own words, this is basically saying that God made a covenant with David, saying that his line would rule forever. I see darkness in the world for poor people. Because they do not have a steady home, a family to go to and talk to, a full pantry of snacks and meals, and drinks. We can light it up by bringing them a meal, having a conversation with them, bringing them a backpack with some water bottles and snacks. I think that we sometimes forget about people who don’t have as much as we have. And we need to realize them and help them, because we sometimes just go right on our way places we need to be and don’t even think about the homeless people.
