Using math in real life

In math class, I learned how to solve equations with rational numbers.

Let’s say you have to paint your house. You can paint 2/5 of the house in one work day. How long will it take until 3 houses have been painted?

2/5 one day
4/5 two days
1 1/5 three days
1 3/5 four days.
2 five
2 2/5 six
2 4/5 seven
3 1/5 eight (You can’t just leave the house with 1/5 not painted!)

It would take you eight days to paint 3 houses. 3 x 2/5 = At least 8 work days

Notice how every day I added 2/5 while counting the days until I got to 3 work days.

That is how you solve a rational equation.
