The Pearl

I think what stood out to me the most was when Kino refused to throw away the pearl even though it was affecting him and his families safety. I think it was selfish of him and it resulted in him losing everything he had. If he had just done what Juana asked they would never have been in this mess. I think it was brave of Juana to try and throw away the pearl because she knew bad things were going to happen to them.

I learned that it is not good to let things and money rule your life just because you want to be rich and have nice things. It makes you greedy and it can affect the people you love. Kino’s son died because he refused to throw away the pearl, and he hit Juana which could ruin their relationship. If one little thing can make you not care about anything else except getting money then it’s really not worth keeping it.

This will help me when I think I need a new outfit or money for buying something I don’t need I can think how wanting things can ruin your life. If when I get older and I just go out and buy whatever I want whenever I am going to get in trouble fast and it could result in something bad or it might overtake me and all I can think about it what I am going to buy or where I can get more stuff or money.

On May 1, I shadowed Kimberly A. Clarke, who was an attorney for Varnum Law. She was in control of the immigration laws and clients. I got to read a brief and give my opinion and edit it. I got to learn about minor working laws and different laws in different states. I got to listen to her speak to clients and try to solve their problems. I also got to do a research project for her and fill out a paper for one of her clients. She was a partner and introduced me to some of the other partners in the firm and I got to learn more about the firm. Since my mom works there I got to meet some of her friends there and learn more about what goes on in a day-to-day basis.

If I could have anything I want….

If I could have anything in the world I would want a free ticket to go travel the world. This ticket would allow me free flight and free cruising to wherever I wish to go. It would also provide me free lodging at wherever I chose to stay. It would also grant me the ability to rent a car or another item of transportation. If this wish was granted I think I would be a little nervous to actually go and live in all these different places and meet all kinds of new people. I would have to leave behind my family and probably wouldn’t be able to have a family of my own. I would have to be flexible and go with the flow. Other people might try and steal it from me because they want unlimited traveling expenses and free tickets to wherever they want to go. I think if this did happen I would have to have saved up lots of money for when I’m in all these different places. I might have to find a job when I’m staying in these places and learn how different other people’s jobs and lives were when living in a different country. I may not have many friends or people to talk to because I am always gone and always moving. If I get to one place and meet someone and then a week later I am gone I really can’t stay in contact with them if I am always moving and doing something. I think it would allow me to maybe learn different cultures and different languages. It might even further my education by going and studying in different areas of the world. I could take some classes down there to get a different perspective on how other people learn. This would be sort of a hard lifestyle to live with some days because you are never stable and are never in one area for a long time but it could also be a fun and adventurous lifestyle. You would get to see new things and enjoy new experiences.

A senior pentagon official told the news that the North Koreans were getting ready to let off a missile test at any time. They had positioned two mobile missile launchers on the east coast of the country. They think it will happen April 15 because that is the birthday of the person who founded North Korea. The government there wants to give a dramatic display to the world of the military power in North Korea. The missile has a range of 2,180 miles. This weapon has never been tested so there are many possibilities for mistakes. People have advised countries around North Korea to take cover because they could be a chance this missile is nuclear. No one knows exactly where the missile will be launched to or even if it will. Some think that it will be launched into the ocean just to show people the strength of the missile. North Korea is ordering all foreign people out of their country. They are ordering people out so that those people would try and get people to support the military leader. The people in North Korea are going on living their daily lives but no one knows for sure if the Korean’s are going to start a war with this weapon or what they are going to do. Some officials in South Korea believe that this is just to scare the United States to return having negotiations with North Korea. Some believe different.

I think that its terrible what is happening in North Korea. If they would just let people do what they wanted and go where they wanted they wouldn’t have to be scaring people into war or treaties. I think there are better ways of dealing with this than shooting a missile that could harm people.

Senate Session

I enjoyed how everyone took part in the session and stated their opinion. They would talk about what they wanted to happen instead and give new ideas. I also got frustrated when people would raise their hand and ask the same question over and over again or when a bill would get passed that makes no sense at all to pass.

One thing I learned about our class is that we all want to participate but sometimes we don’t listen and pay attention to what others are saying and then we miss out on important things. Our class is also more of a visual class. I learned that I get frustrated when I have a different opinion about a bill being made but it still passes. I learned that our government has a lot of disagreements but we have to give our opinion in order to work things out because if no one says anything it will never work out.

In the future I think we should keep engaging and giving opinions in the session but I also think we should give other people a chance to state their opinion and listen to what they are saying. I think I should speak up more about my opinion and compromise even if its not what I think is right. I also think we should write more things on the board so people can see the numbers and not have to repeat it all the time.

I liked the discussions in the senate session and how we got into debates about bills that we thought were wrong. I also liked how people  were willing to compromise and try to change what is wrong. I think next session we don’t use the tabling the motion thing because we just used that when we didn’t want to keep talking about the same thing. We should just make amendments instead and try to fix the problem right away instead of waiting a day and then doing it all over again. We can use it once in a while just not all the time if we don’t like a bill.

Comparing Government

Something that surprised me was that the United Kingdom doesn’t have a written constitution. It only has laws that are enforced. In Thailand they also have a constitutional monarchy, so they are ruled by a king. Also Jamaica got their independence on the day the constitution was ratified. My countries were somewhat similar to the US. They all had a bicameral legislative branch with two houses. Some of the houses were called different names, for example, United Kingdom has the House of Lords, and the House of Commons. In Italy though the Judicial Branch has a Constitutional Court with 15 judges who serve instead of nine like the US. Some Judicial Branches in other countries have several court systems. In Thailand they have the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court of Justice, and the Administrative Court. Italy, like the US, has only four political parties. While Thailand has eight, and the United Kingdom has ten. I now realize that the US way of government is not the only way possible. Other countries make it work without a constitution and without a president. Some countries are the same but have different changes in the branches of government. It works differently for every country.

On Tuesday in Alabama a man boarded a school bus and demanded two kids between the ages of 6-8. When the bus driver refused and tried to stop him he shot the driver and took one 5 year old boy. He took the boy to a bunker under his house. They have been in contact with the suspect and know that the boy is okay. The kid is watching TV and eating. The suspect had not been very nice in the past. He had threatened to kill kids if they went on his property, he had beat his dog with a lead pipe, and he was just going into trial for menacing some neighbors and firing his gun in the air at them because they damaged a make-shift speed bump. Jimmy Lee Dykes was the suspected shooter and he had built the bunker himself. Sometimes he himself would stay in it for days. Police are talking to the man through a PVC pipe and trying to reason with him. There was no reason to believe the man wanted this child because of a relation only because he wanted a hostage situation.

I feel like terrible about this. It makes me sick. Why would someone want to kidnap a little child for the sake of having a hostage. When they finally get the kid this guy is going to jail so he might as well give it up. If you were that paranoid you should be in a mental hospital already not going free roaming around. I think what he did in the past also affects now because he has not always been nice and now he is taking it to the next step.
