Newsletter 36 (the last one): Week of June 4

Highlights from our Week:

What a fantastic week! We started our week with the Memorial Day parade and the kids did a wonderful job marching in the parade and honoring those who protect our freedoms here. Thank you for your help in keeping everyone safe and getting all of the jackets turned back in. Thursday the kids proudly presented their PBL projects. They worked so hard on those projects and it was such a blessing to be able to share them with you! I am one very proud teacher! Thank you for celebrating with us! Thank you, as well, for bringing in the yummy cookies!

The week ahead of us brings another field trip and lots of celebrating the end of the year. We will spend time intentionally slowing down, soaking in our time together, and reflecting on God’s faithfulness throughout our school year. I plan on savoring my last moments with your children, the students I have fallen so deeply in love with this year!

This is our last newsletter this year, and I want to say one more time how grateful I am for all of you! Thank you so much for all your support and help this school year. Thank you for your prayers, your encouraging words, and all your hard work! I couldn’t do my job without you!

Important Dates:

  • June 7: Holland Farmers Market and lunch at Kollen Park
  • June 7: All-school chapel (1:00)
  • June 8: Last day of school! Happy summer!
  • June 8: No hot lunch or pm busing

Important Announcements:

  • Farmers Market and Lunch at Kollen Park: On Wednesday, June 7 we’ll be heading to our last kindergarten field trip, the Farmers Market! From there we’ll head to Kollen Park for a picnic lunch. We will not be eating hot lunch that day. We will be back to school about 12:45. “Morning kids” are welcome to stay until then! If you need to pick your child up at the normal 11:50 time, please meet us at Kollen Park. If this causes a problem for your family, please let me know and we’ll figure something out!  Again, a letter explaining all of this can be found here: Farmers Market Parent Note-26se8wl If you have any questions, please let me know!
  • First Grade Visit: Monday morning our class is invited to visit both first grade classrooms! The first graders are planning to give us a tour of their classrooms. Whether your child will be entering first grade at ZCS next year or the year after that I pray that this fun visit will help calm any nerves and make the transition into first grade even smoother.
  • Bus Tags: All students who typically ride the bus may turn in their bus tags to their bus driver on their last bus ride, either to or home from school.  Kids who are not riding anymore this year, or who don’t typically ride at all, may bring them to the office now. You may drop the tags off this summer at the ZPS bus garage but we strongly encourage you to get them in before school is out.
  • Hot Lunch Reminder: As the school year ends and the accounts get low please follow this link http://www.sendmoneytoschool.com to check your student’s account. You may contact ZPS at 616-748-3128 with questions.
  • Summer Learning:
    • Summer Reading:
      • Bookmarks: Read 20 books over the summer and earn your way into an ice cream party next school year! This will be include din the review packet. (See below.)
      • Books List: Our reading teachers have compiled a great list of books to read over the summer! Please check it out here: K-2Summer Reading Ideas-1g2i69a
    • Summer Review Packet: With a little help from TeachersPayTeachers the kindergarten teachers at ZCS have been compiling a set of optional review activities for you to work on with your kindergartener this summer if you would like to. Please look for that coming home this week!
  • All Sports Camp: June 12-15 from 9-10 am Joel Nagelkirk (Parker’s dad) will be leading an all sports camp for rising 1st and 2nd graders. It sounds like it will be a fun camp and a great way to stay connected to kids from our class over the summer if you are interested. I sent an email about it Saturday, but information can be found on the school website on the ZCS Expanded document.

Check out how much we’re learning and growing in Christ!

Bible: We continue to talk about Paul. With Maestra Vasquez the kids solved a secret code. The message was a reminder that God is always with us.

Literacy: This week we talked about question words. Our new knowledge helped us create the invitations to our PBL celebration.

  • Reading strategy: Inferring
  • Read aloud: El Mundo Marino
  • Vocabulary words
    • nadar (to swim)
    • el coral (coral)
    • la mancha (spot)
    • la almeja (clam)
    • la aleta (fin)
  • Word wall word: ¿cuándo? cuando (when)
  • Phrase of the week: ¿Cuándo vamos a recreo? (When are we going to recess?)
  • Letter of the week: review of vowels (a, e, i, o, u)

Math: I introduced 3D shapes on Thursday. This coming week we’ll review these shapes and continue learning about them.

Exploring God’s World: Another huge thank you for all of your support during our PBL! Thursday was a very exciting and long-anticipated day! This coming week we’ll head to the farmers market to put many science/social studies concepts into practice. We’ll practice trading money for the goods we’d like to buy and will learn more about goods and services.

Writing Workshop: We had one very good writing workshop time! This coming week we’ll fix and fancy our favorite pieces and have our last writing celebration.

Up in Lights: Most recently Pierson was up in lights! He introduced us to his mom and dad and they shared what makes Pierson a special part of their family. Pierson, our class wouldn’t be complete without you! We love you!
