Newsletter 15: Week of January 14

Week Overview

It feels so good to be with your children again! We had a great first week back! Tuesday our student teacher, Matiana Medrano, joined us. Everything I’ve learned about her so far or seen her do with your kids is so affirming to the fact that she will be an amazing teacher! We are blessed to have her with us for the next 7 weeks! Please read her bio below.

I am so excited and looking forward to student-teach in Maestra Izenbaard’s classroom! My name is Maestra Medrano. I went to school and was raised in the small town of Fennville, Michigan. I am the oldest of four siblings. There are two girls and two younger boys in our family. We also can’t forget about our dog, Princess! Pretty soon, I will graduate from Hope College in May of 2018. After that, I will be teaching at Holland Public Schools. Since Spanish is my first spoken language, I will be teaching in Spanish in a kindergarten classroom at HPS. I love to travel, running outside and spending time with family and friends! This Christmas, I went on a road trip to Mexico with my parents and brothers and sisters to visit our grandparents. We had a great time and had so much fun. I may even bring pictures from our trip to show you at school! I can’t wait to get to know all of you and to share many wonderful moments in class for the rest of the year.

Sincerely,
Maestra Medrano

Reminders

  • ZCS Showcase: This is for any family interested in learning more about ZCS. This is especially important for any families that are looking at ZCS for preschool or Kindergarten next year. Please pass on this time to any families you know that may be interested.
  • For The Kidz Gymnastics Field Trip: We are still looking for a few more drivers! Right now I have enough seat belts for 17 squished kindergarteners in very full cars. If you’re available, please sign up using this link for SignUpGenius. We’ll leave school about 9:30 and plan to be back about 11:30. It’s best if siblings stay behind and let this be a special time for your kindergartener. Thank you!

Curriculum

Bible: In Bible we talked about Jesus growing up and beginning his ministry. We saw that John baptized Jesus and this was part of God’s plan. We talked about God the Father, God the Holy Spirit, and God the Son all being present at Jesus’ baptism.

Literacy: We continued to explore adjectives. This week we learned about possessive adjectives- mi, mis, tu, tus, su, and sus. One thing I love about immersion education is the way it empowers students when they realize these touch-sounding concepts are really things they use all the time! My job is to simply help the kids notice the language they’re already using. 🙂

  • Read aloud: La Clase de Dibujo
  • Vocabulary Words:
    • el dibujo- drawing
    • la tortuga- turtle
    • la cabeza- head
    • los colors- colors
    • el/la artista- artist
  • Word wall word: de (of)
  • Phrase of the week: Yo veo _____. (I see _____.)
  • Letter of the week/handwriting letter: Dd

Math: In Math we continue to work on number formation, grouping numbers to add more quickly

Writing Workshop: We began a new unit on pattern books. We read several different examples of pattern books as we practiced identifying the pattern and the theme on each page.

Exploring God’s World: We began our unit on motion. We learned about pushes and pulls, working to identify each one in real life examples and feel them in our bodies as we practiced the actions.

Up in Lights: Ava was up in lights this week! She shared a very special photo book her mom made for her when she was younger. It was fun to get a glimpse of what Ava was like as a baby, toddler, and today! Ava, God made you so special and we’re glad you’re in our class!
