Do we really turn our calendar over to June this week? I can’t believe how fast this school year is going by! It’s been a tremendous joy to partner with you in your child’s education this year! Our PBL continues to be a highlight for many of the kids. They are forming some beautiful relationships with the 7th graders and the partnership as they work on these projects is just amazing.

  • June 1: PBL Celebration (10:00-11:00)
  • June 7: Holland Farmers Market and lunch at Kollen Park
  • June 8: Last day of school! Happy summer!
  • June 8: No hot lunch or pm busing

Important Announcements:

  • Memorial Day Parade: ZCS students K-2nd grade who are interested and available that day are invited to march in the parade in downtown Zeeland! Please do be sure to note the instructions for Monday given in this document: Memorial Day Parade Information-1n8fago I will see you on Main St. near the intersection of Cherry and Centennial at 8:45! To the families who have reached out to me about other plans, have a wonderful day! We’ll miss you!
  • PBL Celebration:  On June 1st at 10:00 each child will present his/her project in a group! Please join us for cookies and lemonade in our classroom afterward. Thank you, in advance, to the families who have offered to donate cookies and lemonade! I know the kids are super excited to share their projects with you!
  • Farmers Market and Lunch at Kollen Park: On Wednesday, June 7 we’ll be heading to our last kindergarten field trip, the Farmers Market! From there we’ll head to Kollen Park for a picnic lunch. We will not be eating hot lunch that day. We will be back to school about 12:45. “Morning kids” are welcome to stay until then! If you need to pick your child up at the normal 11:50 time, please meet us at Kollen Park. If this causes a problem for your family, please let me know and we’ll figure something out! I sent a letter about this home on Friday. You can also find it here: Farmers Market Parent Note-26se8wl If you have any questions, please let me know!

Check out how much we’re learning and growing in Christ!

Bible: We continue to learn about Paul’s journeys. Some days were challenging but God never left his side!

We continue to work on our Bible verse. The kids have even started singing it when they’re waiting in line or during transitions. 🙂

Mateo 28:19-20

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20

Literacy: This week we learned about the letter Xx. We did a treasure hunt around our classroom searching for words with the letter Xx. We also learned about the verbs es and  son.

We finished the aalpa! I’m so proud of all of the kids! The results aren’t something I typically share with parents, but if you’re interested in knowing how your child did, please let me know! I’m happy to share them with you, but they’re really meant to inform my instruction, help your child set goals for the future, help your child’s 1st grade teacher know where to begin instruction at the beginning of next school year. They’re definitely not “top secret,” but are really more meaningful from a teacher perspective than a parent at the kindergarten level in my opinion. Still curious? I’d love to chat and share them with you!

  • Reading strategy: Inferring
  • Read aloud: No Tengo Sueño
  • Vocabulary words
    • el sueño (dream)

Math: We are practicing finding the number that is greater than, mayor, and less than, menor. We are also working lots with parts of 10.

Exploring God’s World: Our PBL continues to go well! We met with the 7th graders twice this week to work on our projects. They’re almost complete! When we talked about who we’d like to share our projects with the kids mentioned their families, of course, but I thought it was interesting that they also mentioned several friends from other classes or grades by name with whom they wanted to share. I love the amazing friendships your kids are forming!

Writing Workshop: We continue to work on How-To books. This week kindergarteners wrote about how to speak Spanish, how to go to a parade, how to research an animal, or how to take care of a pet.

Handwriting Without Tears: This week our handwriting went along well with our literacy! We practiced writing the lowercase h, b, and f.

 From Our Immersion Coordinator

As we move into the summer months, stop by my office (#69 between the library and gym) if you would like a handout from add.a.lingua that gives suggestions and ideas for enhancing your child’s immersion education during the summer. As always, feel free to stop in or email me (jpierce@zcs.org) with any questions that you might have.

Newsletter 34: Week of May 21

Highlights from our Week:

May always seems to bring about projects, assessment, and reflection. This week we continued working on  aalpa, the language and literacy project, and PBL, the project about animals that we are working on with our 7th grade friends. Your kids are doing an amazing job! As I work through assessing each child I get to reflect on our school year together. I am so proud of each one of your children! I pray they always work “at it with all (their) hearts, as working for the Lord.” Each one of them is doing their very best and should be very proud of themselves!

Important Dates:

  • May 29: Memorial Day (no school)
  • June 1: PBL Celebration (10:00-11:00)
  • June 7: Holland Farmers Market and lunch at Kollen Park
  • June 8: Last day of school! Happy summer!
  • June 8: No hot lunch or pm busing

Important Announcements:

  • Memorial Day Parade: ZCS students K-2nd grade who are interested and available that day are invited to march in the parade in downtown Zeeland! A note went home this week detailing drop off/pick up procedure and time as well as the parade route. If you’d like to take another look at the hand out please click here:. Memorial Day Parade Information-1n8fago I know it’s a bit picky, but please be assured I only do it so that I can be certain your children are safely accounted for! I know families often have other plans and that’s fine! Unless I hear otherwise from you, I will plan on your child marching!
  • PBL Celebration: I’ll be sending details home soon, but for now please note that your child will be taking part in a PBL unit about animals in May. On June 1st at 10:00 each child will present his/her project in a group! Please join us for cookies and lemonade in our classroom afterward.
Check out how much we’re learning and growing in Christ!

Bible: We continue to talk about Paul. We read about his journeys sharing the Gospel and bringing people to Christ. We continue to review what we know about the Holy Spirit. As immersion students your children have the power to share the Gospel in their second language as well!

We also started learning our new Bible verse, the Great Commission. We are singing it to the tune of “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.”

Mateo 28:19-20

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20

Literacy: This week we learned about the letter Ww. When we made a list of all the W words we know we noticed that most of the words used an uppercase W. We reviewed that this means these words are probably names of people or places. W isn’t a very common letter in Spanish and most of these names come from English. We also learned how to name our preferences by saying I like, Me gusta, and I love, Me encanta.

We are finishing up the final task in the aalpa, the presentational task. Students are writing about living and nonliving things with the support of pictures and a word bank. I am going to attempt to finish this step of the project and meet with students in guided reading groups so that they can have at least 1 take home book next weekend.

  • Reading strategy: Inferring
  • Read aloud: Franklin dice “te quiero.”
  • Vocabulary words
    • el regalo (present)
    • el globo (balloon)
    • la mosca (fly)

    • cansado (tired)
  • Word wall word: gustar (to like)
  • Phrase of the week: Me gusta ____. (I like ____.)
  • Letter of the week: Ww

Math: We are learning about “math mountains!” A math mountain is another way to illustrate the parts of a number. The number goes on the peak of the mountain and the parts go on the side where we draw “snowballs” to represent the parts. A note describing this concept went home in red alert folders on Friday.

Exploring God’s World: Our PBL continues to go well! On Friday Maestra Minkus’ class joined us again. We used the internet with teacher and “big kid” supervision to further investigate our animals. At the end of our time together each group came up with an idea they’d like to use to try to share the information they gathered. Next week we’ll talk about who we’d like to share this information with!

Writing Workshop: We continue to work on How-To books. We are focusing on the following words/phrases: first, primero, After, después, and at the end, al final.

Handwriting Without Tears: This week our handwriting went along well with our literacy! We practiced writing the lowercase v and w.

From Our Immersion Coordinator

Join me for an Immersion Parent Round Table Discussion. We will look at a variety of topics of interest to immersion parents (How to provide support at home, how learning to read in Spanish is different than learning in English, How does immersion pedagogy differ from foreign language instruction–particularly in secondary education, etc.) The grade levels are just suggested ranges to don’t feel restricted by them. We’ll meet in the classroom at the back of the media center. Bring your lunch and your questions.

Check out how much we’re learning and growing in Christ!

Bible: This week we learned about Saul’s conversion. God changed his life on the road to Damascus and the Holy Spirit empowered him to spread the Gospel.

Literacy: This week we learned about another letter that makes 2 different sounds in Spanish. When the letter G is followed by an A or an I it sounds like the English J. When it is followed by and A, O, or U it sounds the same as the English hard G sound.

Our literacy project, aalpa, is going very well! Each child has completed the first step, the interpretive task, by reading a book and answering some questions. We’re just getting started on the second step, the interpersonal task, where students will work together with a partner to create a t-chart of living and nonliving things. I am thrilled with the performance your kids are making! There will be one more week of no take home books as I use our Daily 5 time to meet with kids in small groups to work on the aalpa.

    • el ala (wing)
  • Word wall word: ¿porqué? (why?)
  • Phrase of the week: Yo sé la respuesta. (I know the answer)
  • Letter of the week: Gg

Math: We learned about two powerful math words this week mayor (greater than) and menor (less than.) We practiced matching up sets of objects to figure out which set was mayor and which was menor.

Exploring God’s World: Our PBL is up and running! This week we worked hard on it and did 3 different lessons. First, we talked about what we would like to learn about our animals. The kids came up with great questions! Then we talked about how to figure out the answers to our questions. The kids came up with some wild ideas like capture the animal and climb a tree to observe the animal. With a little support, they came up with books, maps, and the internet as research tools and on Friday we met with Maestro Minkus’ 7th grade class to begin researching!

Writing Workshop: We continue to work on How-To books. This week kindergarteners wrote about how to speak Spanish or how to attend a parade!

Check out how much we’re learning and growing in Christ!

Bible: This week I felt a tug on my heart to make sure every child knew the Holy Spirit has given them the power to tell others about Jesus and live for him. We reviewed Pentecost and each child journaled about how the Holy Spirit helps them. I have goosebumps again just thinking about it! Some kids drew pictures, some wrote a few sentences, and others combined the two. Many reflected on sharing the Gospel while others wrote about the power to love others or do what’s right.

Later we learned about the first church and read a bit about Peter and the other disciples. We learned that the Holy Spirit gave them the power to do miracles in Jesus’ name. Sometimes things were hard. Once Peter was even in jail, but God never left them. He even sent an angel to help Peter escape from jail! I reminded the kids that God is with us too, in the good days and when we have problems.

When we practiced our Easter verse in small groups I was blown away by how well your kids knew it! So much so that I let them earn their prize. There was no certificate sent home, (I wasn’t prepared to assess it that day,) but everyone did such an awesome job! Our next verse is below.

Matthew 28:19-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Literacy: This week our letter brought an extra challenge as it makes two sounds! In Spanish the letter Cc makes a hard sound /k/ and a soft sound /s/. We played language detectives and noted that Cc makes /s/ when it is followed by an i or an e. In grammar we also learned that the pronoun lo can be used in place of nouns. In English it is similar to saying “it.” Check out our phrase of the week to see this special new word in context

Daily 5 continues to go very well for our class! I have been particularly impressed with the way the kids are independently working hard even when I’m not directly watching them because I’m working with another group! This weekend the kids do have books to read at home. Next weekend they will not be bringing books home. On Monday we are starting a special literacy project called the aalpa. We’ll begin with the interpretive activity, reading a book and answering some comprehension questions about it. I’ll be working with kids in small groups on this project instead of working on take home book reading strategies, so there will be no books to take home next weekend.

  • Reading strategy: Inferring
  • Read aloud: La familia de Clifford
  • Vocabulary words
    • el pueblo (village, town)
    • el cachorro (puppy)
    • el collar (collar)
    • la ciudad (city)
    • el avión (airplane)
    • el bombero (fire fighter)
  • Word wall word: ¿cómo? (how)
  • Phrase of the week: ¿Puedo llevarlo a casa? (May I take it home?)
  • Letter of the week: Cc

Math: Using the fruits and veggies from our play kitchen we made addition and subtraction story problems as if we were in a grocery store. It was fun to take turns “shopping.” Later we used base 10 blocks to reinforce our thinking of teen numbers as 10 and some extra ones.

Exploring God’s World: We continued learning about living things by closely observing WORMS! We watched how they move and learned all about their ways as living things! Here are a couple pictures, but please check out that page of our blog for more!

Writing Workshop: Your children are showing themselves to be quite talented kids! We made a list of things we know how to do and could teach others. Then each child made their first how to book. Everyone either wrote about how to play or how to color. These were the 2 most popular things from the kids’ lists.

On Friday we celebrated our unit on pen pals. THANK YOU to everyone who made that morning so special! The kids were super excited to meet their secret pen pals and complete the pizza-themed centers together. During lunch several commented on how yummy their pizza was! 🙂 Here are a couple pictures, but please check out that page of our blog for more!

Up in Lights:  Ken was Up in Lights this week! Thank you, Ken, for introducing us to your sister, Natalia, and your mom and dad! Ken taught us a song Unstoppable from his VBS. It went along very well with our Bible lessons as we talked about how the Holy Spirit makes us unstoppable!

From Our Immersion Coordinator

All immersion parents are invited to learn more about your child’s immersion education at an Immersion Parent Round Table Discussion. While these are completely optional, I encourage anyone to join at least one meeting whether you have questions or just prefer to listen. The grade levels are just suggested ranges so that we can focus on topics which tend to be of interest to that level but don’t feel restricted by them. We will meet in the classroom at the back of the media center. Bring your lunch and your questions!

Check out how much we’re learning and growing in Christ!

Bible: This week we talked about Pentecost. We celebrated the power the Holy Spirit living inside of us gives us to share the good news of the Gospel. We also discussed what a powerful event this story is for us as immersion language learners. When the Holy Spirit came as tongues of fire on the disciples, they began to speak many languages and share the Gospel so that all could understand! It was a good reminder of our responsibility as language learners to share the Gospel in English and Spanish.

We’re also practicing our Bible memory verse. I’ll assess this sometime in the middle of May. We’ll have 1 more Bible verse after this one to learn in Kindergarten.

Matthew 28:5-6 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.

Literacy: This week our grammar focus was on the verb estar. We looked at a Keynote presentation full of pictures of our class and used the verb estar to describe what the people in the picture were doing.

  • Reading strategy: Inferring
  • Read aloud: El pez arcoiris y la cueva de los monstruos

  • Phrase of the week: ¡Hablemos solamente español! (Let’s only speak Spanish)
  • Letter of the week: Kk

Math: Using the fruits and veggies from our play kitchen we made addition and subtraction story problems as if we were in a grocery store. Then we practiced making partners to 10. A practice worksheet for this skill went home this week.

Exploring God’s World: The kids are loving the new writing daily 5 choices all about the animals we learned about at The Critter Barn! They’re doing a great job with all of that Spanish vocabulary!

Writing Workshop: We celebrated our Small Moments stories! When the music stopped, we stopped dancing, found a friend, and shared our stories with them.

On Friday we started our next unit, How To Books. I asked the kids to tell me step-by-step how to make a pb&j sandwich. We all giggled when I took their directions literally and squished the bread by placing the jar of peanut butter on it. We’ll be using that exercise to make a class book.

Handwriting Without Tears: We’re making our way through the lowercase letters. This week we worked on r, n, and m.

Up in Lights:  Benson  was Up in Lights this week! Thank you, Benson, for introducing us to your brother, Max, sister, Kendle, and your mom and dad! Benson is one of the biggest football fans I know, in particular the Bengals! He was also very excited to show us his new house. He moved just a couple weeks ago! We’re so glad you’re in our class, Benson!

Do you use a foreign language in your day-to-day life? Perhaps you know of someone else who uses their bilingualism in the work place or elsewhere. We are always looking for individuals who can demonstrate to our students the advantages of knowing and using a second language. If you or someone you know might be willing to visit a classroom or connect with a class online, please touch base with me (Jodi Pierce, jpierce@zcs.org) or your child’s teacher.

Bible: On Monday we finished our timeline by adding the Resurrection! Christ has risen! We opened an empty egg to represent the empty tomb.

Later on in the week we talked about the Ascension. There were some beautiful discussions about Heaven. Christ is coming again!

Literacy: This week we turned our focus to Earth Day and The Critter Barn. Kindergarteners will begin a new Daily 5 writing option all about animals on Monday. We also created a book about how to take care of God’s Earth. We classified words according to the verb “estar” and placed Jj words we found in books and around our classroom on the syllable wheel. It was a great week of review and real-life application lessons in the context of things happening in the world around us.

Math: We continued to work in small groups to complete our math test. It’s time consuming doing it this way, but it’s worth it. 🙂 I think we are finished now! I’m looking forward to beginning unit 4! I can’t believe this is the last math unit of the year. Please stay tuned for a parent letter coming home next week. It highlights some of the things we’ll be covering in this unit.

Exploring God’s World: Our Exploring God’s World unit took us to The Critter Barn this week! Thank you, again, to everyone who helped make this day so amazing! We learned about many different animals including goats, chickens, ducks, cats, rabbits, and cows. I’m excited to use this adventure to give one of our Daily 5 writing choices a memorable context.

Writing Workshop: We’re finishing up our unit on Small Moments stories and getting ready to celebrate this coming week! When we fix and fancy our writing we are looking for spaces between words, uppercase letters at the beginning of sentences, and periods at the end.

Handwriting Without Tears: We’re making our way through the lowercase letters. This week we worked on k and reviewed some of the other lowercase letters we’ve been learning lately. As you watch your child write at home or write with him/her please help them remember to start at the appropriate place, (usually the top.)

Up in Lights:  I forgot to add this section at first last week (Sorry VanderVeen family!) so I kept it on here again. There was no Up in Lights presentation this week.

Lily was up in lights this week! She introduced us to a new song based on 1 Samuel 16:7, “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Thank you for this important reminder, Lily and family! Lily, you are a beautiful child of God inside and out!

From Our Immersion Coordinator

What is an AALPA? This acronym stands for add.a.lingua performance assessment. This assessment allows us to assess and track each child’s development throughout his/her years of immersion education. During the aalpa, each child is evaluated through the three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational. Teachers conference with each child after each section and help them to determine linguistic goals. All of our K-8 immersion classrooms will be working through an aalpa before the end of the year.  Ask your child’s teacher if you would like to know more about the aalpa at your child’s grade level.

Newsletter 29: Week of April 16

Highlights from our week…

It is so good to be with your precious children again! We had a lot of fun sharing stories from our spring vacations- stories from far away places and stories about exciting happenings here in Michigan. Your children did a phenomenal job transitioning back to school routines. It seemed like they were happy to be back at school and I know they were excited to see their friends!

One of the favorite parts of this week for sure was hearing a very entertaining and dynamic speaker, Aaron Zenz. He is an author and illustrator from southwest Michigan who shared all about writing one of his books, Hiccupotamus. He was a very hard act to follow once we got back to our classroom Thursday morning!

It was good to be together again! Board games was a fun part of play time this week!

Check out how much we’re learning and growing in Christ!

Bible: Each Kindergartener has been diligently creating a timeline of the events leading up to Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection. As we learn about each event we open a new Resurrection Egg as a tangible representation of our lesson. Sharing this special time of year with your child means so much to me. It has been a pleasure to walk through them through Holy Week!

Literacy: This week we talked about the verb “estar” again. Before break we learned that this important word is used to describe the location of an object or person. This week we learned that it’s also used to talk about present progressive verbs. In English these verbs end in -ing. This time we focused on how to express something in the form “I am ____.” Estoy ______.

  • Reading strategy: Inferring
  • Read aloud: Sana Ranita Sana
  • Vocabulary words
    • la cucharada (tablespoon)
    • curar (cure)
    • enfermo (sick)
    • el abrazo (hug)
    • las caricias (pats… think on the head or pats on the shoulder :))
    • linda/o (cute, sweet)
    • cariñosa/o (loving)
    • las cosquillas (tickles)
  • Word wall word: bueno (good)
  • Phrase of the week: Yo también. (Me too!)
  • Letter of the week: Jj

Math: We are reviewing in preparation for our math test! I have started the test with several students already and they are doing very well!

Exploring God’s World: Kindergarteners created 2 pages for a class book. On one page they illustrated and wrote about living things. On the other page they wrote and illustrated about nonliving things. We also created a t-chart and classified a variety of objects as living or nonliving.

Writing Workshop: We didn’t have a lot of time for writing workshop this week but we did squeeze in a short review of our small moments anchor chart and a little time for writing. This coming week I hope to give students time to pick one writing piece to fix and fancy.

Handwriting Without Tears: We’re making our way through the lowercase letters. This week we worked on i, e, and l.

Up in Lights: Lily was up in lights this week! She introduced us to a new song based on 1 Samuel 16:7, “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Thank you for this important reminder, Lily and family! Lily, you are a beautiful child of God inside and out!

From Our Immersion Coordinator: I want to take this opportunity to celebrate our Mandarin immersion students and teachers. In the winter, our 3rd through 5th graders were able to take a standardized language proficiency test that allowed us to compare our students’ language performance with that of Mandarin immersion students across the country. Our students outperformed the national average in all four areas of language (reading, writing, speaking and listening)! Our Spanish immersion students participate in a similar assessment in 5th and 8th grade and have also consistently had positive results.

Newsletter 27: Week of March 26

Highlights from our week…

Thank you so much for taking the time to come for our conference earlier this week! I truly enjoy the time I get to spend with you… praying with you, celebrating your child and working together as a team.

We had a great week in Kindergarten! Thursday morning Amanda Barton, a REAL author, came to share her story with us. Friday morning we went to Garden Crossings and learned more about living things. (Your kids had some very cute conversations about how to say green house in Spanish- “casa verde?”) We also used many of our senses as we explored new parts of God’s beautiful creation! THANK YOU to the parents who gave their time and energy Friday morning so that we could go on this trip! Please see the photos tab for some pictures of your cute kids! 🙂

Check out how much we’re learning and growing in Christ!

Bible: We have just 1 more parable to learn about before we finish that unit- the Parable of the Wedding Banquet. I love how hands-on this unit is and I think the kids have really enjoyed it. On Monday your children will bring home their parable bags. I hope this opens an opportunity for a beautiful conversation with your child! Thank you for letting me be a part of what you are already doing as you support your child and pray for him/her to grow in their faith. After we learn about the last parable, we will begin our unit on Easter and the events of Holy Week.

Literacy: This week we spent some time reviewing letters, words, and grammar concepts that we have been covering in this last unit. The way your kids constantly attend to language and get excited about seeing words or letters they know in different contexts is so cute! They are so eager to show what they are learning!

Math: We’ve been talking a lot about addition and trying to see bigger numbers in parts. This week I challenged the kids to find the missing part when I gave them the sum and one of the parts. We continue to talk a lot about teen numbers. On Thursday we also started some new math centers! They include even more opportunities for practicing teen numbers and addition using candy fish, dice, base 10 blocks, and a card game.

Exploring God’s World: Our science unit took us to the greenhouse this week! It was an awesome morning of seeing REAL living things! We also had a great review of our senses as we smelled and touched lots of different kinds of plants. Our God is creative! The greenhouse workers gave me a lemon balm plant to grow in our classroom. Please join me in praying that I can keep it alive! I have a bit of a brown thumb. 😉

Writing Workshop: The kids continue to work hard on writing true stories from the past in order. We are practicing visualizing in our minds first, then telling a story across our fingers, and finally writing our stories.

From the immersion coordinator: Check out the latest blog post by add.a.lingua at https://addalinguablog.com. Gina Vander Zwaag, one of our 6th grade students, wrote about her experience as an immersion student. While there, you could also go back and check previous posts by other Zeeland Christian parents. Thanks to everyone for advocating for our immersion program at ZCS!

Newsletter 25: Week of March 12

Highlights from our week…

I can’t believe this week will mark the middle of March already! It was another fun and full week in Kindergarten! We celebrated Eli’s birthday, watched Bodhi’s up in lights presentation, I was a mystery reader for a 4th grade class and a mystery teacher, (Maestra Ruiz from 4th grade) read to us, and we welcomed three friends from the Philippines in our chapel on Friday morning. I have been taking advantage of every moment of “down time” to assess your kids in preparation for conferences. I’ve been enjoying this special time to check in and I’m looking forward to sharing this progress with you next week at our conference!

Check out how much we’re learning and growing in Christ!

Bible: We began our unit on Jesus’ Parables this week! We learned that a parable is a story Jesus used to teach his followers something important. We will be creating a parable bag with a small craft or tangible object to help us remember and retell the parables. At the end of the unit I know your child will be so excited to show this to you!

(Our next Bible verse comes from the Easter story. Because Easter isn’t on the same date every year, we sometimes have a time “gap” between our most recent verse (Matthew 7:7) and the Easter verse. This year that happens to be the case. Enjoy this time “off” to review previous verses and maybe even learn a new one as a family! Thanks for being flexible!)

Literacy: This week we talked about reflexive verbs. This kind of verb is used to express that one does an action to oneself. Often they are used when we talk about routines. For example, I get myself dressed, I brush my teeth, I wash my hands.

  • Reading strategy: Inferring
  • Read aloud: Corduroy
  • Vocabulary words
    • la tienda (store)
    • la gente (people)
    • el botón (button)
    • la muñeca (doll)
    • los pantalones (pants)
  • Word wall word: muy (very)
  • Phrase of the week: Yo fui al ____. I’m went to ____.
  • Letter of the week: Ññ

Math: Our math time this week was spent working on a practice worksheet to reinforce several important skills including: finding groups of 5 in bigger numbers, adding, and subtracting. We also learned to identify two sets of object as equal or not equal.

Writing Workshop: I am so proud of the way your kids have taken off as amazing writers this week! We began a unit on Small Moments. We are practicing telling true stories from one moment and one place. First we visualize the small moment, then we practice retelling it using our fingers for the parts of the story, and finally we write the story!

Handwriting Without Tears: This week we practiced numbers 8, 9, and 0 on the chalkboards with wet sponges, dry paper towels, and chalk. Then we put our knowledge in context by completing our teen number book pages for 18, 19, and 20. Hopefully you saw these come home! Your kids should be very proud of themselves!

Up in Lights: Bodhi was Up in Lights this week. He introduced us to his mom, dad, and two younger brothers. Bodhi loves the smell of suckers and anything Disney and princess. He can probably put a puzzle together better than anyone I’ve ever seen! We are so thankful for you, Bodhi! Thanks for being Up in Lights this week!

From the immersion coordinator: Do you teach a specific dialect of the language or have a preference of where the native speaking teachers come from? No, we do not focus on dialects or specific regions where Spanish or Mandarin is spoken. Actually, we prefer to expose our students to as much variety as possible when it comes to variations in the languages. This helps the students gain a more diverse vocabulary, better comprehension skills, and a broader command of colloquialisms. In fact, just this week I watched a group of 2nd graders realize that peanut butter has a different name in Ecuador than in México.

Newsletter 21: Week of February 19

Highlights from our week…

It was a full and fun week in Kindergarten! On Monday we celebrated the 100th day of school! It was a very special day of reflecting on God’s faithfulness over the past 100 days. We giggled a lot as many of us dressed up as if we were 100 years old and created portraits of our 100 year old selves. Kids who didn’t dress up and those who did all had an amazing day celebrating together! (I love how Kindergartners just go with it!)

“What will I look like when I’m 100?” — 100 year old portraits

I think a highlight was counting out 100 ingredients in our special snack. THANK YOU to those of you who donated snacks and other supplies to help make our 100th day of school celebration possible!

On Tuesday we celebrated God’s love for us and our love for each other. It was another very special day for our class. Thank you, again, to those of you who helped by donating supplies, running centers, and helping your child bring valentines to pass out.

Important Dates

  • February 20: President’s Day Break- No school
  • February 23: All school chapel (9:10)
  • March 20: Parent Teacher Conferences*- no school
  • March 21: Parent Teacher Conferences- full day of school

*More details on signing up for conferences coming soon. 🙂

Important Announcements

  • Quarters for Wayne: Kindergarteners will work together to help raise money for our sponsor student in the Philippines by earning quarters throughout the month of February. You may collect quarters directly on the sheet with tape or in a separate Ziploc bag. If you need to view the sheet again, please click here. I would like to have all quarters and/or recording sheets by the end of February please.
  • From what I can tell there are two “bugs” going around our classroom- one with severe cold symptoms and the other is the stomach flu. I am doing my best to keep things sanitized and safe at school and I know you are at home too. Winter will be officially over soon and hopefully a long weekend will help! Thank you for your prayers for a healthy class (and teacher!) If your child is sick, please remember to call the office. Thank you!

Check out how much we’re learning and growing in Christ!

Bible: This week we began our unit on Jesus’ miracles. So far we’ve read about Jesus turning the water to wine at the wedding, the great catch of fish and Jesus’ teaching about being fishers of men, and  Jesus calming the storm. When we learned about being fishers of men we practiced this song that has also been a favorite during our Kindergarten singing time on Friday afternoons.

Literacy: As you probably know our literacy curriculum, which comes from add.a.lingua is written to be taught over 5 days. Occasionally I’ll squeeze it into 4 days if we run into a snow day or something, but with Valentine’s Day and 100th Day both falling this week I felt it was best to review rather than introduce something new. I also new we’d be hitting lots of literacy objectives during our 100th day and Valentine’s Day special activities. Thank you for trusting me to use my best judgement!

With the bit of extra time reviewing gave us, we did something special with the book The Mitten “El Mitón.” Each child laced their own white mitten and practiced retelling the story with their own animals.

In Daily 5 your children are working very hard in Listen to a book, the final of the 5 activities I introduced a couple weeks ago. This week we learned about RazKids. This is an online application that allows me to choose books for kids to listen to at each student’s specific reading levels. It’s also a tool you can use from home if you choose to. (The app is free!) Please see the instructions below.

Kids A-Z Login Instructions:

  • Step 1: Go to http://www.kidsa-z.com
  • Step 2: Enter or choose my username, mizenbaard
  • Step 3: Your child finds his or her username on the class chart.
  • Step 4: Your child enters his or her password (Touch the airplane.)

Math: We continue to look for parts of bigger numbers. In particular, we are practicing looking for groups of 5 in bigger numbers. In the afternoon our math centers include opportunities for adding candy hearts, making patterns with candy hearts, flipping 2-sided math counters to make parts of 10, and coloring by numbers with dice.

Writing Workshop: Your kids continue to amaze me as they put their amazing and creative ideas onto paper! This coming week we will choose our favorite pattern books to “fix and fancy.” After that we will celebrate this unit of writing and each child will have the opportunity to share his/her published piece of writing!

Handwriting Without Tears: This week we practiced writing 4 and 5 the school way. We used this knowledge in the context of our teen numbers books and practiced 14 and 15. This was the first week I felt like the students really took to heart that there is a certain way we are expected to write numbers in school, not because Maestra Izenbaard suggests it, but because it’s best for our writing no matter what subject we are working on. I’m glad they are being so diligent!

Exploring God’s World: We dug a little deeper in our learning about motion and classified real life examples of push and pull, for example, pulling weeds, and pushing a shopping cart.

Play: Our 100th day costumes easily transitioned into play this week as the class decided to play grandma and grandpa. I loved the way even the kids without costumes that day were included in the game. I think this coming week, if they’re interested in continuing that play, I’ll suggest we pretend it’s Grandparents Day!

Afternoons:

  • Monday: art, rest, read aloud, recess, snack, play
  • Tuesday: rest, sorting and graphing candy hearts, recess, snack, play
  • Wednesday: rest, math centers, recess, snack, play
  • Thursday: rest, math centers, recess, snack, play
  • Friday: rest, play, recess, snack, Kindergarten singing

From the immersion coordinator: Did you know that translation is an advanced linguistic and cognitive activity? Most children will not have the cognitive maturity to translate naturally until middle to late elementary; this is not reflective of their understanding of the new language but rather demonstrates the way children’s brains work and develop. Cognates (words that look similar from language to language) usually go unnoticed by the young brain until late elementary or beyond also. Our teachers intentionally make cross-linguistic connections to help our students discover the relationships between their languages.
