Volcano Project

This week me and my group had to make a volcano and maybe make it explode. My group choose Mt. Vesuvius and we made a model of that volcano using paper macheiy. We are going to make it explode tommorow by using coke and mentos. We are also using dry ice to make it look like smoke.

Persecution in Uzbekistan

Did you know that there are 30,691,000 people in Uzbekistan and only 350,000 of them are Christians?

This week we did a project in bible class to help out christian persecution in the world. We were all assigned a group and a country to make a project and help stop persecution. In my group was Lauren DeBoer and Maggie Cooper. In my opinion we all worked really well together and I would be glad to be in their group for any other project. The country we got was Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is located between Asia and the Middle East. It is the 15th christian most persecuted country. There is so many ways we can help with christian persecution. One way is you can write letters to the people being persecuted in the world by going to Open Doors’ website. If you would like more information about are project you can always ask me or go to my link for my groups presentation.

Spaghetti Towers

Today we made spaghetti towers. Our group had 3 strategies. One of our strategies was to have support beams through the middle. Our second strategy was to have a craddle for the egg to go in so it wouldn’t fall out. Finally our third strategy was to  have two noodles on the bottom instead of one to keep it stable. Next time I think we should’ve made it more of a square instead. I hope it lasts the earthquake.

Pythagorean Theorem

This week we have been working on an project for Math Class about the pythagorean theorem. We had to make a model and a problem that shows how we can use the pythagorean theorem in real life. We decided to make a gymnastics mat because that was what Hannah always used when she did gymnastics. Hannah Diaz and Lauren DeBoer were are in my group. We were trying to figure out how to fit a gymnastics mat on a shelf.

This is love: not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” 1 John 4:10-11

Do you know what Lost in Love means? It means that God loved us so much that we can not even imagine how much he loves us and so we are lost in his love that pours on us. This year we are gonna show love to other people in the world because God showed love to us. We can show our theme, Lost in Love, to others in our school and to people in the world.

There are so many things we can do to show love to people at our school. For example, we can just be kind to the younger kids at our school because I know when I was little I loved when the 8th graders waved at me and said hi. Another thing I can do to show love at my school is to help my other classmates. For example, if they are confused in class or don’t know what to do that would be a nice thing to do. We have a couple of new kids at our school and some kids that don’t have many friends that I could instead of just going to my normal friend group hanging out with them.

There are many ways I can show love to people all around the world. One way is to tell people about Jesus. A ton of people around the world that do not know about Jesus and it would change their life if they learned to love Jesus. There are many people that do not know about Jesus and we can tell them about Jesus. The biggest way to show love to the world is just to be kind to everyone. Even if they aren’t nice to you. I am going to have good sportsmanship when I am playing sports because I have seen some people that aren’t very nice when they play sports. That means that I need to say good luck to them, help them up when they fall, and be humble if you win and they don’t.

We can show our theme, Lost in Love, to others in our school and to people in the world. There are many different ways we can show love to others not just at our school but all around the world. We need to show love to others and love them just like you would want them to love you too.

Beginning of the Year Reflections

  1. One thing that I have enjoyed in school this year is starting in Ms. Roskamps class. I like starting in her class cause it’s my favorite class and we kinda just hangout.
  2. One thing that I have learned this year is that they found full fossils of animals in different continents and it was impossible for them to swim across so that’s why they had to be connected.
  3. One thing I am looking forward to this year is being a small group leader. I get to teach the younger middle schoolers about Jesus and be a good leader.

Boats

We used a square piece of styrofoam and hot glued a wooden rod to it, so we could put the sail on it. We cut the top to be more angled in and then glued a piece of paper on the top for a sail. We put straws on the sides so that when it bumped the sides styrofoam pieces didn’t fall off. We put a ball of tinfoil on the back for some wait and a tupperware over it for extra wait. The first trial went okay not as good as we wanted it but we got 3rd place so i guess it was fine but we could do better. Some changes we are gonna make is make it a little shorter and take off a little of the weight. I am hoping that we will get 2nd place after are changes.

My Summer

This summer I was at my cottage at Sandy Pines. When I was at my cottage, I rode around on my golf cart with my friends and it was really fun. My friends all have big Master Crafts, so we like to go surfing on their boat. We also love to go tubing really fast on their boats. I went swimming with my friends in the waterpark at Sandy Pines. There is a church at my cottage so we usually go to there. Something that is really cool, is that both my grandparents have a cottage there and so does one of my aunt and one of my uncles. There is 2 candy stores there, so we usually go get candy whenever we want at the candy store. Usually I went to the ice cream store twice a week and you will get the biggest ice cream cone you will ever have. I went to volleyball camp at school with all the girls that play volleyball. I had a basketball camp at Calvin and we played like 8 games. At the end of the camp we had a big pizza party. Something I really liked about my summer was that I got to hangout with my cousins and my friends whenever I wanted because they were just like a mile away or a golfcart ride a way. My summer was pretty great!

Invictus

We just finished watching the movie Invictus. It’s a movie about a rugby team from South Africa that tries to win the World Cup. The president of South Africa that had just got out of prison believed that they could win when no one else did. Everyone thought that Nelson Mandela (the president) was crazy cause they haven’t won any games. He believed in them and encouraged them the whole way and through all their games. Nelson Mandela (the president)  had just got out of jail so the crowd was usually boo-ing him. He made the team think that they could be greater than they believed. The rugby team ended up making it to the world cup. They played the hardest team in the whole world. They ended up winning by a field goal from like half field. I learned that to be a good leader you have to trust in your team and the people and tell them that they can be greater than they imagine.

Africa

We did the Faces of Africa activity and we were taking a test that had multiple pictures of people on them and we had to guess if they were from Africa of not from their appearance. I learned that not all people in Africa look the same or what we think they would look like. When we did the card activity I learned that even though people don’t have food and water they have cell phones to communicate with other people. I learned that their is a struggle for people to try to get clean water because their is very little water in Africa and because most of it is desert and it’s hot because it is close to the equator so most of the water they have is either very little and or unclean water. I also learned that their is vary many deadly diseases in Africa and the hospitals have the medicine the people just can’t afford it. I learned that in Nigeria you could add up 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade and every person would speak a different language than one another so that is like how many different languages their are in Nigeria. More than over half the adults in South Africa are illiterate.

The Eagle Huntress

Today we watched a movie “The Eagle Huntress” and it was a really cool movie. The movie was about a girl names Aisholpan who was learning to be an eagle hunter from her dad. A lot of her ancestors had been eagle hunters for a long time and it was a tradition or culture in their family. She caught her own eaglet with the help of her dad so she could compete in the eagle hunters competition in Ulgii. She got first place as the only girl huntress and beat a record for how fast the eagle flies to you from a mountain. In the mind of all the men that meant nothing if you just won the competition you had to prove you are a true eagle hunter by going to the mountain in the winter and hunting a fox.

We saw an article that was about if “The Eagle Huntress” was really a documentary or not. They asked the director a lot of questions if they filmed certain scenes over and over again but they didn’t so it was a real documentary. Otto Bell denied that none of the parts were retaken except at the end when they win the eagle hunter competition.

To scale: The Solar System

The Solar System was cool because their is no picture out their that has an actual scale size of the Solar System or scale size of the Solar System. They needed space for the whole scale to fit so they went in a desert area. I can’t even imagine how big the solar system is or would be if we could see a real scale.

Running Wild

Their was people that were running all around this mountain range area putting cameras to try to see if they could catch any wolverines on camera because some people got a wolverine on camera around that area so they tried to see if they could get any on camera. Will the wolverines come back? Are they going to come back? Where are they if they are not in the mountains. I wouldn’t do it because I can’t.

Canyon Song

Their were these 2 girls that were born into a navajo family who often visited the canyons. When they visited the canyons they sang songs so that the spirits if the canyon would hear them. They loved to go there and work in the fields planting corn. The sisters loved to go explore in the canyon and find cool places and sit in talk. Every time they left the canyon they would grab leaves of of the trees, while they were in the car, and throw them our the window into the pond or the river. The kids dad went to a school that was like showing more respect to the white kids. You had to dress like them and you couldn’t have long hair. The dad loved to teach their kids about the navajo culture.

Possible Jobs

Now that I have watched these films I am more aware of more jobs that I could have when I grow up for instance I could be…

  • Film Maker
  • Surfer
  • Scientist
  • Runners
  • Mountain Climbers
  • Designer
  • Explorer
  • Surfboard Maker
  • Slack line Maker
  • Product Designer
  • Designer

Camp Reflection 2

  1. Who am I? Who are we?  Who is he?

The verse that spoke to me was Acts 1:8a. “But you will receive the power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.”  It said that I will receive power when the time comes so I just have to wait.  Another verse that spoke to me was 1John 3:1. “and we should be called children of God and that is what we are! The reason that the world doesn’t know us is because it did not know him.” So I think that verse is telling me that the reason that the world doesn’t know us is because some people don’t know about the Lord or don’t believe in the Lord.

2. Group Goals

As a Zeeland Christian 7th Grade community we have listed some things that we personally need to work on and a couple that we need to work on as a grade. One of my personal goals was to make sure I am always respecting my classmates, teachers, and everyone. That means making sure I am listening to my teachers when they are talking and other classmates. That means respecting the other opinions of my classmates and teachers. It means not talking over the teacher or having side conversations when the teacher or classmate is talking. One of our group goals was to make sure that we always make sure we are welcoming to substitute teachers and other kids that are joining our school. For example, helping a new classmate to make sure they know were they need to go in between classes. Making sure we are respecting the substitute teacher when they are giving directions.

Gracias!
