Dear Parents,                                                                                                May 25-29, 2020

I hope you are enjoying a beautiful Memorial Day weekend! As you celebrate with family this weekend, please join me in remembering those who have served and are serving in the U.S. military armed forces.  It is with grateful hearts that we acknowledge these men and women who have faithfully served our country, many of whom who have given their lives. Zeeland posted a Youtube pre-recorded service you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X04XDtIHZ0c&feature=youtu.be.

It is hard to believe that we are in the final week of our school year. YOU have been so incredibly diligent to persevere through these very challenging unprecedented last 9 weeks.  Thank you for your encouragement to your children to help them navigate distance learning amidst many different emotions and various levels of grief.  I know you have been stretched in more ways than ever was anticipated, and have stepped up in so many extra ways by homeschooling full time.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!! I am blessed by you and praise God for you!  I pray that you are able to rest and be refreshed this summer.  I look forward to beginning a new year in the fall together!

As we enter into our final week of learning, here are a few details to keep in mind for Tuesday and Thursday:

Each student should choose 1 page to add a text box with a short message. I will print these and give them to our 5th grade friends as a farewell gift! 🙂

I hope you enjoyed the beautiful warm and sunny Saturday this weekend!  I pray that the Lord continues to give you His joy, hope, and strength in the new week.  We have one more full week to go and then next week will be a short, final week of school. It is so hard to believe that we are in the home-stretch of this marathon we call “Distance Learning”. I am so blessed to get to work with each of your kids and appreciate all of your hard work more than you know.  As we look ahead to next week, there are a few additional details I want to share with you. Please see below:

1.Friday, May 29–Last day of instruction. We will be having curbside pick-up for student materials. Students are invited to come to school at a designated time, according to your family’s last name.  At that time, your children will meet me at the fire-door which opens to the east parking lot. (Families are not allowed in the building.) I will have gathered each students’ desk and locker materials and will have a bag filled with their belongings to give to each student.  Please plan to bring your child’s laptop to school to turn in (and charger) as well as book bag, books, etc.

I hope you enjoyed a wonderful Mother’s Day with your family and. your amazing kids! They are such a blessing.  I hope too, that you enjoyed their sweet messages via Youtube, shared with love from their heart, for you at Mother’s Day!  YOU are loved!

Thank you for your kind notes of encouragement, and thoughtful gestures this past week. I so appreciate YOU!!! It is YOU, who are the true heroes, continually giving and giving to your children and families during this unprecedented time. I hear in your voices and emails that you are growing weary.  Proverbs 3:5-6 has always been a source of encouragement and my theme verse for the SHC program over the years: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on. your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths.”  In times of uncertainty, we can fully trust in the Lord who knows all and is in all. I praise God for the assurance of HIS promises! I pray you would be encouraged as well this week.

It is hard to believe that we have just 3 weeks left of our school year together. Here are some details regarding the end of the year:

1.Friday, May 29–Last day of instruction. We will be having curbside pick-up for student materials. More details will be coming soon!

2. Library Books- Mrs. Joustra has placed a cart and a sign in the front entryway of school to collect the books. She will check on this every couple of days. You do not need to wait until the last day of school to return books. Thank you!

Dear Parents,                                                                                                      May 4-8, 2020

I hope you have enjoyed the beautiful spring-like weekend!  I so appreciated being able to connect with many of you this past week to “touch base”.  In the last week or so, I have received requests to modify student workloads (either add or take away).  The requests depend on how your child is responding to distance learning, and the time your family has to spend on learning tasks.  Please continue to reach out to let me know if learning needs to be adjusted in any way. I am very happy to work closely with individual families! I’ll continue to check in with you as well.

Monday Zoom: This week, I’ll be meeting on Monday morning for our Zoom meeting with the boys at 11:20-11:40 and then with the girls at 11:40-12:00.  I’ve encouraged them to bring something to “show and share” if they’d like. We’ll also share praises and requests and pray together too.

Extra Support: I am happy to arrange additional Zoom meetings with students to give a little extra encouragement or support if needed. If your child is having a hard time completing work, please let me know as well. I’m happy to help in any way- I love to work with and see your kids!

Our last day of instruction will be on Friday, May 29.  May 25 is Memorial Day, which we will observe. There will be No School on that day. Wonder-Filled Wednesday will also be held that week.  The following week, teachers will meet (hopefully face-to-face!).  We will share more information about when to come to school to gather your child’s school supplies when we know more from our governor.

Continue to refer to the Week-at-a-Glance on the www.zcs.org/distance-learning.  I have also linked our SHC blog link to the “Week-at-a-Glance” for easy access.  You will notice that Kelli has included a new overview of the math lessons as well.

Blessings for your week ahead in these unprecedented times.

May God refresh you daily,

Dear Parents,                                                                                                      April 27-May 1, 2020

I hope you are continuing to enjoy the time you have with your family, where we continue to stay home a little longer.  This week I’m beginning a new way to connect together even while we are apart. Stay tuned!  I am planning to meet with students at the same Zoom times as last week. Please refer to the Sign Up Genius LINK if you need to change your time.

An added thought from my heart (4/27 I would love to connect very briefly with families for a Monday Morning Check-In.  Throughout last week, as I looked over all of the many, many posts kids have made, I am truly incredibly honored to work with your kids and YOU. They are doing so amazingly beautiful through this unprecedented time.  I want to come alongside you to support and encourage you.  I know for me, that at times, I feel like, “I’ve got this!” but then in that same day, can easily become overwhelmed….SO, I wanted to let you know I see and feel your struggle.  YOU are doing so, so much to encourage your kids, to give them a sense of normalcy when life is definitely not normal!

I’d love to check in with you in a quick, hopefully a 5-10 min. Zoom, and see how you are doing.  If there are some things that haven’t been turned in, let’s talk about it and see if we can make a new plan- a do-able plan that will help you and your kids to feel empowered. This time is not normal, so we can be creative to adapt or modify if needed.  I am happy to do that! Your primary focus is to care for and nurture your kids and family, and then to focus on school- not the other way around.  I am grateful that ZCS is able to offer this intentional opportunity for families, but family comes first…I’m reminded that, “With man, this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible.”  (Matt. 19:26) I pray that the power and strength of God will fill you, encourage and equip for the tasks he is calling you to do today, this week, and through this truly life-changing time.

I will reach out to. you via email or text to ask, “Is this an ok time to zoom?”  I’d like to chat with your child, but would love to have you in the nearby background, or join in together with your child.  I will reach out between 9:00-11:00 on Monday mornings. My plan is to just “check-in”. If we don’t need to meet, I don’t want to take your valuable time. I’m also happy to meet longer if needed. I want to stay connected even while we are apart.  I think of the “Monday morning meeting” as a time where if we were at school, I could call each child to my desk and we could just touch base together briefly, to check on any unfinished work, and see how they are doing. I look forward to “seeing” my amazing kids!

MONDAY Zoom time beginning next week:  Priorities. I’ve been thinking about that a lot. In what areas do we primarily focus when we meet for a Zoom meeting? I want it to be a valuable use of time. Is it most valuable to have a time for social connections with and for kids? YES!  Is it valuable to have a time to focus on God and pray together? YES! Is it valuable to have time to take questions or to share a peek into the lesson plans for the week? YES!  So, where is the balance?  Right now, I think it is important to give the kids time to talk and interact. I think many are craving time to see their friends again. (Perhaps you could arrange a Facetime with a friend or two for your kids?) But, next Monday, we will be having 2 separate Zoom times- One for girls and one for boys– using the same Zoom link.  I’ll meet at 11:20-11:40 with the boys and 11:40-noon with the girls.  Then, Friday, let’s plan to all meet together at 11:30.  Thank you for all of your work! I’m praying for encouragement for you all this week, for continued stamina and endurance as we “press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus”. (Philippians 3:14).
