Go
The school theme this year is ‘Go’. It comes from Matthew “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” I love this verse, but this is a verse that I have seen my friends struggle with. Working at Camp Geneva summers ago I watched several friends give up dreams of becoming a lawyer, a teacher, a vet because we were called to ‘go’. So they dropped out of their schools of study and enrolled at Western studying to become preachers and missionaries so that they could “Go.” In time most of them discovered God was not calling them to do this and so eventually heavy hearted they returned to their studies and wondered why they were not called. But they are called and so are you. We all are called by God to ‘Go’ share the word, just not all of us are called to the pulpit or this mission field to do it. God needs all of us teachers, lawyers, doctors, students each of us is called to share God’s message with those around us. We might be called to the playground or the lunch table to share our faith. God wants to use us where we are to impact those around us. I think that we get a little excited about the verb “Go”. In the original greek the verb translated is “Make Disciples” go is just one part of how you do that; go, teach, live, baptize.
I am excited as a school this year to think what we could do if we focused on making disciples, on living our faith in such a real and dramatic way that everyone around us knew we were followers of Christ. Then I think we could truly do as this verse intends and “Go’ make disciples.
