Information and Reminders:

No homework this week due to 4 days of school and two field trips.

Please finish and send your child’s timeline the week before your child’s special week. During your child’s special week, it is a wonderful opportunity to have lunch with your child, bring in pets, or share special talents your family members may have been blessed with. Just inform me ahead of time what is your plan.

First Grade Field Trip: Lollipop Concert, Tuesday Jan. 24 at Zeeland East High School Dewitt Auditorium Thank you to Jane Klingenberg, Erin Harris, Meredith Geurink and Kristi Van Dyk for driving the field trip. Chaperons, we will leave school at 9:00am. The concert starts at 9:30. Thank you!

Second Grade Field Trip: Grand Haven Water Treatment Plant. Tuesday, Jan.24 Thank you to Jen Brower for driving the field trip! We will leave at 9:00 and come back at 11:30.

Chinese New Year Field Trip: Friday, Jan. 27. NorthPointe Christian School We will leave around 8:50 in the morning and come back to school before lunch recess. Each student will bring a sack lunch, there will not be time to get hot lunch. Chaperons, please bring all the boosters you have.

Valentines Day: To celebrate Valentines Day, we are going to exchanging valentines on Tuesday, February 14. Please prepare a valentine for each classmate. Here is the class list.

Curriculum
Language Arts
-Reading Strategy:
We will continue the read aloud called Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater. Each week we will focus on one or two reading strategies to help us understand plot and settings of this book. This week we will focus on 1 comprehension strategy.
-Vivid setting description and impact on character: When the author uses vivid description, slow down. Picture the details the author is giving you about the time and place. Notice what’s happening in the time or place alongside what a character thinks or feels.

-Writers’ Workshop: We will read our first how-to book to a partner to see if the reader can understand the steps we gave. If not, we will add details to make the instructions more clear.

Math
-First Grade: We are also going to represent 2-digit numbers with cards and drawings.

-Second Grade:We will practice solving word problems with unknown addends, compare word problems, and mixed word problems.

Social Studies
We will talk about how people modify or adapt to the environment.

Science
-First Grade: We will switch back to the weather unit. We will learn about weathers in winter.

-Second Grade:Students continue to work hard on their Projects for Using Resources Wisely.  

Bible
We will talk about the spies and Rahab and crossing the Jordan.
