Information and Reminders:

No Homework this week. We will use this week to review and finish up curriculum from last week.

Please finish and send your child’s timeline the week before your child’s special week. During your child’s special week, it is a wonderful opportunity to have lunch with your child, bring in pets, or share special talents your family members may have been blessed with. Just inform me ahead of time what is your plan.

March 14: Musical at Community Reformed Church All of our first graders and second graders will participate in the musical.

First Grade Field Trip: Thursday, March 16 Meijer Garden We will leave by 9:00am. Thank you to Ben Wickstra, Dana Moeller, Jane Klingenberg and Erin Harris for driving the field trip. Please bring all the boosters you have.

Curriculum
Language Arts
-Reading Strategy:
We are going to start a new read aloud called The Box-car Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner. It is also a great realistic fiction which corresponds to the writings we are going to work on. We will spend time introducing the book this week.

-Writers’ Workshop: We are going to start a new unit about realistic fiction. This week, we are going to spend time reading some samples from previous students and create our own characters and plot of our story.

Math
-First Grade: We are going to spend time talking about teen story problems with various unknowns.

-Second Grade: We will learn to estimate and measure with centimeters and inches. We will also learn how to show measurement data on a line plot.

Social Studies
This week we are going to use a calendar to distinguish among days, weeks, and months.

Science
-First Grade: We will learn weathers in spring when the weather is warm(probably in March). We will start learning the animal unit in April.

-Second Grade:We will start the introduction to a new unit this week – Changes in Motion.  We will begin with observing and describing motion, as well as learning some new scientific terns in Mandarin.
Bible
We will talk about Naomi’s story; Ruth and the happy ending.
