From the Immersion Coordinator
Why does my child’s teacher feel that she/he needs to step out of the classroom to talk to me? Our teachers do a phenomenal job of protecting the target language-only environment in the classroom, and you can play an important role in protecting it as well! When we set clear boundaries and expectations with children, we know they are much quicker to respect our expectations. It is the same with the language use; we need them to see that the classroom is for Spanish or Mandarin only. You can help by using even broken Spanish (or Mandarin if you know it!), by stepping out of the classroom to talk with the teacher, or at minimum, by turning your back and whispering when English is needed. Thanks for the support!

Curriculum
Language Arts
-Reading Strategy:
We started a new read aloud called The Box-car Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner. It is a great realistic fiction which corresponds to the writings we are going to work on. We will spend time studying the author’s skills to create person’s personalities through appearance, actions and talking.

-Writers’ Workshop: The past week students spend time creating their own character, settings and plot for their realistic fiction. This week we will spend time creating our first realistic fiction.

Math
-First Grade: We are going to learn about numbers through 120; add and subtract tens and add and subtract multiples of 10. We will also continue to spending time learning about place value system.

-Second Grade: We will learn several different shapes: squares, rectangles, triangles, pentagons, and hexagons. We will learn their properties and ways to measure length of their sides and distances around them.

Social Studies
This week we are going to learn that historical evidence from photographs, people, artifacts, and documents can tell stories about the past.

Science
-First Grade: We will learn weathers in spring when the weather is warm(probably in March). We will start learning the animal unit in April.

-Second Grade:We will look at different ways to describe movement (speed, direction, type) and experiment with movement.
