Once there was a squirrel named Fred and a dog named Bob.They are racing toward an acorn because bob wanted to play with the acorn and Fred wanted to eat it. Fred was up in a tree and bob was 2.1 meters directly underneath the squirrel. The dog was 3.3 meters away from the acorn. They both really wanted the acorn. Using the data given, what is the distance from Fred to the acorn.
We got this idea from one of Maria’s word problem from her math in Guatemala. So we screwed two pieces of wood together like an L. The longer piece of wood as the ground and the shorter piece as the tree that the squirrel. We used string as the distances from each animal to the acorn and from one animal to the other. We all worked together good and everyone had a chance to help. We used this idea because it made a right triangle. This could be used for hunters when they are using a bow, they need to know what angle they have to shot to hit the deer in the right spot.
