Phillis had a hard life because she was kidnapped when she was just 7 years old . She was brought to Boston and sold to a man named John Wheatley and was forced to be a slave for his wife. Phillis became interested in writing and published her first poem in 1767. she was born in west africa and was very scared when she got kidnapped.
Phillis also published a book of poems. John Wheatley freed Phillis in 1773 but Phillis stayed a wile longer because mrs. Wheatley had gotten ill. In 1778 Phillis got married to john Peters a free black and all of the children Phillis had died after a few months. it was very lucky that Phillis was freed because most African slaves don’t get to be free.
