my school stuff

Athens or Sparta?

May7

Here I am sitting at home trying to figure out what to do with my sewing needle and thread. My mother is sitting next to me sewing a new quilt for my brother, who is at school learning all the stuff I would rather be doing: gymnastics, rhythmic, reading, and writing. I get to train for battle sometimes but not a lot.

I am sent out to feed the horses and other farm animals around our small barnyard, a servant passes by with the fresh batch of milk as I walk back from the chicken koop. In the distance I see my 9 year old brother running home, he greets me and asks how his horse is doing “Great” I answered  “he is ready for your next battle lesson”. He went inside to eat dinner that I had helped my mother prepare.

My mother was capable of caring for our land and instructing all three slaves we own to do their chores while I clean their small living cabins.  My father is at battle fighting for  sparta and its ways he has been gone for 3 months and is coming back in a week, all of us are expecting him, and preparing for his arrival. Mother had the same rights as my Father and voted. We have a form of government called Oligarchy which means the leaders make most of if not all the decisions.

My mother and 2 of our servants are preparing a feast for when my father comes home 1 other servant was cleaning like crazy and working on the farm outside. My mother kept complaining that we had little servants and needed more but my father would be home soon hopefully with a new batch of servants that were caught in war. Im only 12 years old and soon will have to get married, at age fifteen of corse. My older sister is age 19 and is long gone and married off, so it was just me, callie, and my brother Ren. Ren was in the barn looking at his big brown chestnut colored horse which would help him win his mini battles that were held at school to prepare him for war.

I was sent by my mother to go buy another servant from the market which was being held today, she sent my brother with me in case a servant tried to escape or rebel against us. I ran to the barn to get my brother and my horse, he begged me to bring his horse but I told him one horse would do just fine, my horse was named midnight, a black horse with a star shaped white spot on her head, but my brother insisted I let him take it so I let him. We were nearing  the market when we saw the slave line they looked quite tired and weary but it would have to do. My brother chose a boy about 17 years old and we tied him to my horse’s saddle and  started for home. As we saw our farm in the distance the slave slowed down, Thankfully my  mother came and took the servant to his cabin. My father would soon be home and I was so excited, but we were afraid he would not return and my mother would be able to get married to someone else we did not know.

Sadly my father did not return but my family had new hope when my mother came home and said that she had found a new father for us. She told me to clean the house and get ready for his arrival that same night. He was a nice guy and I loved him, he helped my brother train for war lessons and helped me with my horse. We were all happy and content with our new father. I am a spartan girl and I am proud of my city.
