Tell your parents one thing about my daughter Megan. She is a bright girl.

Tell your parents about the video we showed for Chapel this morning! it was about Jesus when he was on the cross.

Good Friday to you all,

As you reflect on this week, and the joyous good news of Sunday, know that we have been discussing and praying about God’s Blessings, and the knowledge that our Faith was founded on this weekend just over 2,000 years ago. This morning, the 5th grade teachers were in charge of the Chapel presentation. While the Easter story was being told, pictures drawn by your sons and daughters, was displayed on the screen. It was very powerful to see the pictures corresponding to the story as it was read.  The kids also had a chance to meet my daughter Megan this morning. She is an accountant for Lowell Light and Power, and they are closed on Good Friday. Megan said she thoroughly enjoyed meeting the kids, and could easily see why I enjoy teaching here as much as I do! Your kids made her feel very welcome!

Classwork has been going well in all areas. In Bible, we were preparing for the Chapel presentation, and continuing on with Christ’s early life. Once again, I would like to put in a reminder to have the kids practice their spelling words and Bible memory verse at home during the week. In ELA, Mrs. Keyser has been prepping the kids for their narrative writing pieces. Thanks to the parents that shared a memory with this last week’s assignment! Mr. Hutt is continuing with all the different applications of long division. Next week though he’ll be focusing on division with decimals and distinguishing between multiplication and division. In social studies they will be studying the differences between the British and Colonial armies.

In my math class, I am finishing up with the various applications involving volume of rectangular prisms, and composite figures. In science, we are getting close to finishing up our unit on the solar system, specifically the earth’s relationship with the sun in regards to the seasons.

I have had one parent volunteer for the field trip to Calvin College on May 13th to see the chemistry demonstration. I could still use 2-3 more. We will be leaving about 9:30, and will return about 2:30.  Thanks in advance!

I also want to put in a plug for my summer class that I will be leading the week of June 17th. I will be teaching a beginner’s golf class to those interested. We’ll meet MWF for 90 minutes. During that time, I will teach the fundamentals of driving, chipping, and putting. I will also give them a dose of golf etiquette. We will culminate on Friday by spending the 90 minutes playing a few holes on the Winding Creek course. I am not sure where this is advertised, but I heard there were only a few signees as of this week. I will take up to 15 kids. My brother in law, and possibly my son will be helping me out. It should be a great way to see if this is something your son or daughter wants to pursue as a hobby, or even a high school sport!

I hope and pray that this weekend is an incredible Blessing to you and your family as we all celebrate Easter!

Very sincerely, Paul Keyser

Tell your parents about your trip to the planetarium. Give them at least 3 facts that you learned.

It was fun and lunar eclipse and the solar eclipse.

What was your favorite part of the week(besides going on break today)!  going on the trip to the planetarium.

Good morning!

I hope you excited about spring break! I’m looking forward to a bit of family time. Kathy and I are going to The Ark and the Creation Museum in Kentucky, and then I am going to be helping my son get his nursery ready for the June arrival of our first grandchild!

We took a trip to the planetarium this week, and it was very enjoyable for some, and pretty boring for others. My feeling is, if there are 10-15 kids in our group that were fascinated by it, then it is a worthwhile trip. That coupled with the material they saw, ties in nicely with our study of the solar system in science! Mr. Hutt is moving toward the Revolutionary War in social studies with the first shots being fired at Lexington and Concord! The kids seem to be very interested in it. In Math, the kids will be once again switching teachers after spring break. The kids I had will be continuing on long division and it’s real world applications. The other class is in the middle of the chapter on measurement and geometry. In Bible, we are continuing on with the early life of Christ. In ELA, the students finished up with their informational writing pieces, and will be starting personal narratives after break. I gave the kids a break this week with no spelling or Bible memory verse. They were given a new verse, but will have until the Friday after break to recite it. They should be practicing the first 3 verses of Ephesians 2 over break.

Explain what Mrs. Keyser did this morning to help you make Valentine’s collector bags.

Explain how you saw Conservation of matter with our labs this week in science. I saw the vinegar  and the baking soda make the bag fill with air.

Tell you parents about our special Chapel yesterday! The living Hope singers came and sang for us.

Happy Valentine’s Day to you all!

It has been a good, albeit short week here at ZCS! Today, is flying by as the kids spent some time this morning putting their bags together for their card exchange. Mrs. Keyser came in and helped with the decorating, and many of the bags look really sharp! We didn’t get as far academically this week due to the short week and the snow day. We are still moving through the material that I highlighted last week. The “Winter Olympics” are commencing this week, with the first event being the sled races. If you son or daughter participated, I’m sure you’ll hear about it.

I sent an earlier email asking for volunteers to drive to the field trip this next Tuesday. I have one volunteer so far to drive to, and to hear the Grand Rapids Symphony, and am looking for three or four others that are willing to drive. It will be at Central Wesleyan in Holland, and we will be gone from about 9-11. Please let me know with an email(pkeyser@zcs.org) if you can drive. I will take the first three or four people that volunteer. I hope you all have something fun planned this long weekend with the kids. I know I am doing some things with both of ours! Also, I am taking my Mom to the airport Saturday as she and my sister and her husband are going to Australia for three weeks. Should be an incredible experience for them all

Dear Mom,

Tell your parents what you are going to write about, and the five sub points you came up with. I am writing about Gareth Bale.

Explain to your parents how you figured out the “mystery powders” in your science lab. we did experiments to find out what they were.

Tell your parents in at least 3 sentences, what your favorite part of the week was! it was band because the saxophone players got a new song to play. In music we got to learn about the orchestra  and what family the are in. When I did my Bible memory  I got 10 out of 10.

Good Day, and Happy Friday! Love Darvi

Another week has drawn to a close, and it has been another busy week academically. Mr. Hutt is in the middle of his marketing unit, and I have heard from a few kids how much they are enjoying it! Mr. Hutt is also in the 4th unit with his Math class dealing with multiplication, and I am drawing toward the end of unit 3, on fractions. Besides the usual grammar and spelling activities we cover in Language Arts, we just began our next major writing piece, informational text. They are currently trying to narrow down a list of things they feel they know a lot about. Once they choose their topic, they will decide what to include in their piece on the topic. They appear to be excited about writing on something they already know lots about. In Bible class, we are continuing on with the Jews return to Israel, and the rebuilding of their Temple. We also are touching on the relationship between the Jews and the Samaritans. In Science class, we are drawing to a close our unit on matter and the differences between chemical and physical changes. The class spent two days in lab this week trying to identify 5 “mystery powders”. A good challenge for all!

Hoping you are enjoying the last of our mild temperatures before the bottom drops out of the thermometer this weekend. We were reminded of the policy that the kids are required to go out for recess, unless a teacher specifically has something for the students to do. I say this only to please make sure your son or daughter has all they need to keep warm while they are outside. I am amazed as I go out and shiver during my recess duty how many kids are out there with only a fleece, and no hat or gloves! I also realize that they might have the hat and gloves in their lockers, but choose not to wear it, often because they race out the door to get as much recess time as possible! 😉

Quick reminder if you are going to donate some toiletries for the Philippine students, the new due date is next Wednesday. If possible, please have them in a Ziplock bag that is a 2 gallon size or smaller. Thanks so much.

On a personal note, we found out yesterday that my son and his wife are going to have a boy the first week of June! Nice to know that Jeff is not the last Keyser in the family tree! God is good, all the time! Jeff says Mom and baby are doing great and both growing!  🙂

Hoping and praying you are all doing well, and that you have a great weekend! Paul Keyser

January 1-11,2019

Dear, Mom
What was something I learned about King Cyrus this week in Bible class?  King Cyrus was a good king and he let the jews back to the temple.

Explain to your parents why I felt the need to complement each other during the morning greeting. Also, tell them what type of complements are best. have a good day,you are a nice friend, and you are funny.

Explain to your parents the difference between a physical and chemical change. Use examples from the labs we did this week. I don’t know but you might know.

Love, Darvi

Happy Friday!

I just wanted to tell you all how grateful I am to be able to be with the kids for the rest of the year. I think they already feel like I am their teacher, and not just someone filling in for Mrs. Hall. I did see Claire yesterday as she came in to get her personal items, and it made me feel good to see that she was ready to move on and see what God had in store for her. She made it clear that she always really cared for the class, and I told her the kids knew that. Now, we can just focus on the task at hand, and that is having an incredible second semester with MY CLASS!

It has been a good week back after a very relaxing Christmas break. I hope and pray you enjoyed some quality family time as I did. We got back in the swing of things by Monday afternoon. I think the kids were still half asleep in the morning! 😉 Probably it was tough to get some of them out of bed!

Mr. Hutt has moved into a Marketing unit, and he had Mr. Jenkins come in and give a presentation to the kids that was quite informative on “Marketing 101”. In ELA, Mrs. Keyser and I are working on context clues to be used in their reading. They still have their weekly grammar, cursive, and spelling activities. In Bible class, we are studying the rebuilding of the Temple as God’s chosen were allowed to return to Judah by the benevolent King Cyrus. Science this week consisted of a couple of labs involving distinguishing between chemical and physical changes to matter. Math has been divided between Mr. Hutt and me, with the emphasis on fractions and multiplying two by two digit numbers. Knowing our times tables is still a skill that most of the 5th grade could improve upon. All in all, a very interesting week of learning!

I also want to thank you ahead of time for purchasing the toiletries for our Philippine Students.

Have an incredible weekend and Blessings, Paul

Merry Christmas!!
I am actually writing this Thursday, so I am assured to have it written for the kids to do their blogs on Friday. As we close out 2018, I am reminded what an absolute joy it has been to be your children’s teacher these last couple of months. They are truly a pleasure to teach, and have made me realize that I am not ready to retire, and look forward to the prospect of spending the rest of the year here. We do continue to pray for Mrs. Hall, for continued strength and good health. I will be hoping to hear sometime in January whether I will be here until June or not.

It has been a pretty crazy week with lots of interruptions to the normal schedule, and so therefore, we are not much further than we were last week curriculum wise. We will be switching math classes once again in January. My class will be finishing the second half of unit 3, and Mr. Hutt’s class will be beginning unit 4.

The class really appreciated going to, and touring the Fishers of Men Ministries facility. I know they appreciate the fact that they are helping those less fortunate than they are. It gives them a great feeling of satisfaction, knowing they are helping keep families warm this winter!

We had Chapel yesterday morning, and everyone had an enjoyable time with all the singing that we did. It was so precious to see the Kindergarteners sing to us all. Chapel was highlighted by “highlights”, when Mr. McAboy spoke to the class with blue hair in honor of the struggle that Jacob Feak is going through. Many of your sons and daughters have sported their own blue hair(as you know when they come home from school) to support Noah and his brother’s fight with cancer. Please pray that Jacob can come home from Ann Arbor in time for Christmas.

We held our classroom Spelling Bee yesterday, and I want to congratulate Cora Boerman(1st), and Noah Feak(2nd) for advancing to the grade level Bee to be held in January! Those who participate thoroughly impressed me with spelling prowess! Study those word lists over break!!!

Thanks to Liz Culver, and Holly Heres for spearheading this year’s Christmas party, and all of you who volunteered to donate things for the cookie decorating! Please ask your son or daughter about the movie they watched this afternoon, “The Nativity Story”. It should be a very powerful film!

I hope and pray for you all to have the most Blessed of Christmas’s with your kids and family this break! Please know that I will miss them, they are a wonderful group of kids!!

Very Sincerely,

Paul Keyser

Dear Mom,
What was your best part of the week?
The best part was when we had preschool bodies.
Good Morning to you all!

It has been a good, albeit busy week for my class. In addition to the normal schedule, we have had Community Crews for Wednesday’s lunch, and Family Groups Thursday. The theme for the Family Groups was “Christmas Fun”. We made Christmas chains, listened to carols, played a game or two, and learned the origin of a few Christmas traditions. All in all, it was a very enjoyable time. On Tuesday, the class went down and spent some time with their “Preschool Buddies”, and made countdown chains for the days leading up to Christmas. I have included some pictures below. Special thanks to Lisa Klamer’s preschool class for having us come down! Today, the kids were entertained at lunch by the 5th grade band playing Christmas carols. They did an incredible job, very impressive!

Classes have been going smoothly as I have continued with the fractions in math(unit test prior to Christmas break), properties of matter in science(including an interesting lab comparing the properties of various substances). We finished up our unit on the Last Days of Judah in the Bible class, and the kids did very well on their assessments. We are now beginning the unit, Judah’s Return.  In Language Arts, the papers are finished, and the class is doing a variety of activities to highlight the Christmas season. Your son or daughter should have come home with a Christmas ornament that they made with Mrs. Keyser. They also were entertained by Mrs. Keyser reading the Max Lucado book, “The Tale of the Three Trees”. Mr. Hutt has been finishing up with the Mid-Atlantic colonies in social studies.

A couple final reminders for you to note. First, we are still looking to collect new hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves for the Fishers of Men ministries before next Thursday, when we walk there to present them.  Please try to include this in your shopping plans this weekend, so we have a nice turnout next week. Secondly, Liz Culver and Holly Heres are still looking for people to use Signup Genius for items for the Christmas party next Friday. During the afternoon, the kids will be watching the movie, “The Nativity Story”, and it comes with a PG rating. I have included a copy of the permission slip below, and will send home a hard copy for you to sign and return. There is a link at the end of the paragraph for you to click on and see why it carries a PG rating.

The Nativity Story

Dear Parents of 5th Graders ~

After the New Year the 5th grade will be kicking off our Bible unit on the birth of Jesus. A number of years ago a movie, the Nativity Story, was suggested to us as a fairly accurate portrayal of the Christmas story. This real-life portrayal of what it might have been like that first Christmas is well done and is quite true to the Biblical account (with some exceptions and differences which we will discuss in Bible class). We do need your permission to let your child watch this movie because it is rated PG. Below is a permission slip to watch The Nativity Story next week Friday. Also, here is a link to a review of The Nativity Story that Focus on the Family put out when The Nativity Story originally was in theaters ~ https://www.pluggedin.com/movie-reviews/nativitystory

Sincerely,
Mr. Hutt
Mr. Keyser
Mrs. Nunez
Mrs. Rodriguez
Mr. Zhang

I _________________________ give my child _______________________ permission to watch The Nativity Story with the whole 5th grade class on Friday, December 21, 2018.Thanks so much, and have a Blessed weekend! Paul Keyser

PS I am truly starting to feel very much at home here at ZCS! Your kids are the main reason I am feeling this way! Thanks for raising a great group of kids!!

Dear Mom

One thing I learned from Mrs. Keyser about writing is:  I do not know

One thing new this week that we are doing is: is how to times fractions

My favorite part about this past week was:  is recess because we get to play football and it is fun.
Love Darvi

Another week has flown by, one more week closer to Christmas! We have been very busy in the classroom this week. In ELA, the kids should be finished with their opinion pieces, and I highly encourage you to have them show you. Mrs. Keyser has helped the measurably to fine tune their writings. The class is taking a quiz in grammar today, and hopefully will show mastery of subjects(simple and compound) predicates, and conjunctions. We continue to work on spelling, word work(the activities associated with spelling), and cursive each week. We are also continuing to work on reading strategies as well. In Bible class, the kids will be taking a quiz this coming week on the various Kings of Judah, and about their reigns. We have had some very good discussions regarding these times. We switched our math kids again, and my group is midway through the chapter on fractions. We are multiplying fractions and mixed numbers, with an emphasis on the distributive property. The remainder of the kids are with Mr. Hutt, and they are a few sections behind in the same chapter. Science has been interesting this week as we have spent time using properties to describe various items. The class was each given their own rock or mineral, and was asked to describe it on an index card using the properties we had discussed in class. Today, they will take another student’s card, and try to identify which rock their card is detailing. In Mr. Hutt’s social studies class, the kids have been continuing with their study of early America’s colonization, this week focusing on the Mid-Atlantic colonies, as well as the New England colonies. Lots going on to say the least!

We have almost all students having paid their $2 for the Christmas party(pizza and drink), and about half have brought their shoebox size box in to transport their art projects home in the near future. Thanks to all those parents who have signed up for “Remind”. It is truly a great way to quickly connect with parents. If you haven’t signed up, open your messaging screen on your phone, and in the “to” line, type “81010”, and then in the message box, type “@keysersk” and you will be added to my class. Hope you all have an incredible weekend. Paul Keyser

This week was so much fun because we got to go sledding at school.

I don’t know what I need to finish my opinion piece but it is a good essay  about if girls should be allowed to play football.

How to times fractions in math and it is a lot of fun.
