~ Is The Price Right!? ~

Hey there everybody, sitting in an old person chair writing this because i’m recovering from coughing my ribcage out last night. on that note, lets talk about math. The last two weeks of math have been all switched up. Instead of my regular sit down, blast punk rock, and crank on math, we did a project on probability. I must admit that at first, i was a bit skeptical, and wasn’t too anxious about switching up my routine math session, but that was all cleared away when i learned that we would be watching ‘The Price Is Right’ for the first three days. I found myself enjoying studying probability! I didn’t feel like we were doing any math! No formulas, no unrealistic mathematical can of worms, no big words (besides ‘probability’), and no worries. I was shown that probability is everywhere, and that there are plenty of ways to use it besides making your head hurt 🙂 . I think that learning about probability this way is LOADS more fun than sitting down for an hour and cranking on math. Did i learn more this way? Of course i did! I didn’t have to deal with dumb life applications that kids my age don’t give a hoot about! I got to have it applied to MY LIFE, did you hear that holt mcdougal? my life. Why couldn’t we do this all year? we have 30-some weeks, and only 10 lessons, and we are the grade that has the most! we could do a lesson project-style every three weeks! That would mean more in depth discovery, more learning, and MORE FUN! WHY NOT?

( I’M BACK! ) European Union. ( Soc. Stud. )

Yesterday we did something very unique. We “traveled” through the European Union. By “traveled” i mean that, we set up a mini map of the countries in the fifth grade commons, and pretended to travel amongst them. Currency exchange, border police, and market sellers. By no means was it the real deal, but it was pretty fun. The experience was great, but obviously not like the real deal. I really enjoyed doing a thorough investigation on my friend Spencer. 🙂 To be honest, security was a pain, but it had its benefits. Drug dealers. Consider yourself caught. Having a good year? You can keep your goods to yourself. Other people having a bad year? Also, if there are many countries to chose from to attack, you are less likely of a victim. But what if they unify themselves? Multiplying their good, so they can save for their famines. Multiplying their traveling leisure. Multiplying their defense against evil. Wouldn’t that be smart?

Yes, thats the end.

Who’s Right?

Seems that many groups are fighting over the Amazon Rainforest. They’re really going at it too! They’re all sure its their rainforest. But who’s right? I believe that the environmentalists’ purpose for the rainforest is the best.  Why? They’re protecting the earths lungs. I think that this quote says it well.

“If we pollute the air, water and soil that keep us alive and well, and destroy the biodiversity that allows natural systems to function, no amount of money will save us.”

Though this quote comes from Mr. big bucks (David Suzuki). He makes a good point, and I’d like to add on to it. We don’t know how long our ancestors will inherit the earth. At least, I don’t! Lets keep the one earth we get safe. Maybe unlike other people who support environmentalists, I’m ok with he rubber tappers, they don’t really do any harm, and I feel that the Brazilian economy needs support from them. I’m not okay with rubber tappers trashing the rainforest, they claim they won’t, and I trust them, and hold them accountable.

So in conclusion, keep the rainforest, but support the economy without harming the rainforest.

Thank You,

Jacob H.

Immigration Day.

Immigration Day.
We live in a very diverse community. Many dutch people, hispanics, and people from Asia, the list goes on! Canadiens, every shape and size of Europeans, still, the list goes, and goes. Inspirational people, funny people, christian people, muslim people, crazy people, we’ve got people from the 80s, the 60s, 40s, 20s? Basically, we live in a very diverse place, we call it the world. We live in a very diverse situation, we call it life. We, decided were going to celebrate the different ethnicities that people come from, a day of stories, surprises, and hopefully ending up a bit more thankful for the thinks we have. I met with my interim pastor, Henry Admiral, or, as we call him, Pastor Henry. He was an immigrant from the Netherlands. He was ten years old at the time, and guess what! His family was paid to emigrate! I know right? Crazy. They thought that america was gonna be the bomb! For them, riding the school bus was leisure. They went from a small, no, tiny house to a big one, now, maybe not modern day big, but put yourself in his shoes! I also talked with Dr. Kim of north Korea, who while doing mission work in north Korea was about too pay $100 for a taxi to the bay. But since he was no idiot, he asked to talk to the driver outside, grabbed him, and said, “i know tea kwon-do would you like to die here, or will you lower the price?” so reluctantly, the taxi driver lowered it to $50, and Dr. Kim set off for some other country to serve as a missionary, later he came to Holland, MI to start a church. Pastor henry on the other hand had moved to america for a better house, and also managed to reap the benefits of a better life. Pastor Henry’s largest barrier was language, things were also very different from the Netherlands, sports and school had nothing to do with each other, which on the other hand.. we americans made sure that sports had everything to do with school, college, high school, middle school, thats how it still is for us.
But why does any of this matter? Will these stories just lose themselves in our minds? Nah, I’ll hold onto these thank you very much, these are things I treasure, things that help me connect to people around me, and in a weird way, experience a thing that I really didn’t experience. Even better for me, I love different cultures, and immigration day was no exception. I definitely recommend something of this sort to anybody. It was a real pleasure.
Now to prove how exactly these moments really do matter. Imagine that there a person of different ethnicity sitting next to you, and what you don’t know is that they’re dying to speak, and their also feeling as if speaking would be their death, get ’em to tell a story! The things they’ve been storing up inside might just coming flowing out of them like floodgates being opened, and that might be what they need! I sure hope you travel internationally, and when you do, no better way to prepare by hearing immigrants stories, to make you excited, make you be ready for crazy changes, or maybe just some pre flight entertainment! I think that to fully live life you need to do this! Duh! Everyone loves a story! So help yourself to a fuller life.

Remembering 911

I Don’t Know Much About 9.11. I’m Gonna Be Honest. But What I Can Tell Is That The Terrorists Thought They Had It. They Thought That They Would Would Break us, But My Hope Is That It Strengthens Us, That It Brings out The Best In Us, And It Did, Their Plan Backfired, We Had More Comfort Than Before, And We Learned From The Tragedy. Lets Keep It Like That.

New Addition

Why Are We Doing This? I’m Not Criticizing, But Why? Why Would Any Sane Person Do This. Well, With All Due Respect, Were Not Sane, As A Matter Of Fact Were Insane, Spending Millions On New Classrooms?! How Can We Be Sane? The Fact Is, We Can’t, With The Insane Love That God Has For Us, If We Were Sane Then That Would Just Be Wrong. Sure, We Can Count The Cost, And Think Of The Pros, Think Of Cons, But We Gotta Be Insane. Hey, Listen Here, I’m Not Trying To Be A Freak Advertiser For ZCS But I Mean It, No Sanity For Us, Because If We Were “Sane” We Would Spend OUR Hard Earned Money On Fancy Cars, New House, Stock, How Can We Be Sane When Our Savior, 1 Perfect Person, Died For Thousands Of Beautifully Broken Slobs? I Am Proud Of My School For Losing Their Minds, Or Should Is Say, Their, “Minds”. I Hope Than We For Our Good Throw Away This Addition, Not For Ourselves, But For Others, For People Who Don’t Know Jesus. THAT Is The Special Thing About The New Addition.
