Week in review: April 29-May 2

We are starting to wind down our Kindergarten year! It is hard to believe we are into May already, although we all would love to see a bit more of the sun! We are working hard these last few weeks on our vowel sounds and blending sounds together as we read! We have also started our ABC Countdown and I am looking forward to Monday when we will be making our homemade donuts and talking about the number zero! Praying you all have a restful and rejuvenating weekend, I will be headed to East Lansing to watch our oldest daughter graduate from MSU! Enjoy your children at this age, speaking from experience I can tell you the years fly by!

Important Dates:

  • May 8: half day for Tulip Time- dismissal is at 11:45
  • May 9 & 10: No PM Bussing
  • May 30: Our PBL Presentations-more info below
  • June 5: Field Trip to Holland Farmer’s Market-more info below

Additional Information:

PBL- This week we brainstormed about some animals we would like to learn about. The students then wrote some of their top animal choices on an index card and I will be going through them and dividing them into groups based on what animal they would like to study. I will be sending out a signup genius in the next few days looking for some volunteers to help our groups do research. After two weeks of research we will gather in the music room to present our animals to parents and friends or grandparents who would like to attend. This is such a fun and exciting project for our kindergarteners. Thank you in advance for your help!

Farmer’s Market Field Trip- This week we were given the date of our last field trip. We will be going to the Holland Farmer’s Market on June 5. For this trip I will need about 5-6 drivers like normal but I would love to have at least 8-9 parents come along as I would like each parent to be assigned to two children to help them walk around the farmer’s market and decide what they would like to purchase with their $2. (This money is from the field trip money you gave at the beginning of the year.) This can be a bit overwhelming for the kids so it is great to have them in smaller groups! I will be sending up the sign up genius for that in the next week as well!

Curriculum:

Bible: This week we learned about the Pentecost and how the believers came together and God gave them the Holy Spirit. We then talked about our Bible verse and what it means to “Go and make disciples of all nations.” We also worked on a page for our spiritual journal.

Word Wall Words: red and orange

Daily 5: I was able to work with each group once this week. We worked hard on reading strategies such as sliding through a word and breaking a word into parts to make it easier to read. Your child should have come home with a reading strategies paper in their book bag.

Phonics: This week we worked on the 2 sounds the vowel “e” makes and well as the sound the “sh” blend makes.

Writing Workshop: We finished up our pen pals unit with one last letter to them, along with a very fun pizza party! A huge shout out to the parents from our class who made that possible! We also started our “How to” writings with How to plant and How to make a pizza!

Handwriting: lowercase u, i and e.

Up in Lights: This week Daisy Haywood was Up in Lights. We were blessed to have Daisy join our class during the second semester. Her mom came and shared about her. We are so glad to have you in our class Daisy!

Afternoons: This week we had our normal afternoon activities like playtime and quiet time as well as art and math centers and of course our pizza party! We also started some of our afternoon ABC Countdown activities including apple snacks and outdoor chalk writing and drawing. Thank you again to the parents who are donating to make our ABC Countdown memorable!
