January 21-24

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend with your kids. I was able to take part in a professional development day with the rest of the ZCS staff. It was a great day of learning! I also wanted to let you know how grateful I am to be teaching at Zeeland Christian school. I am so thankful that we can pray as a class. The last two weeks I am sure your child has mentioned that one of our classmates, Noelle, has been quite sick. We have prayed daily in class for her. She is making progress in the right direction and I ask that you all keep her in your prayers in the upcoming weeks! Thank you for modeling your faith in front of your children, it is so important for them as they develop into men and women of God!

Important dates:

  • February 6: Field Trip to For the Kidz gymnastics (more information below)
  • February 11: all school chapel
  • February 13: Valentine’s Day party(more information below)
  • February 15-18: No school Winter Break

Additional information:

On Friday January 31 there is NO HOT LUNCH. There is an opportunity to order a sack lunch for that day but if you would like to you need to let me know by noon on this coming Monday, January 27.

Our Field Trip is scheduled for February 6 at For the Kidz gymnastics in Wyoming MI. I sent a field trip permission slip home last week that NEEDS to be returned for your child to participate. Thank you so much for all who volunteered to drive us. We are all set with drivers!  I am so looking forward to this field trip and I am sure the kids will love it! As we begin to plan for this trip I wanted to let you know that there will be NO HOT LUNCH for our class on this day as we may possibly get to school too late. Also, please send your child in comfortable clothes and make sure they are wearing socks that day ;)!

Chapel on February 11th will be held by the eighth graders with a bit of help from the kindergarteners. We will have a small part in this and you are welcome to come and watch!

February 13th will be our Valentine’s day party. It will be from approximately 10:45-11:40. When your child fills out their valentines it would be great if they brought in valentines to pass out to the entire class (16 students). You do not have to label the To: section of the valentines, but just the From:. This will make it much easier for the students to hand them out! Also these may be either homemade or purchased, whatever you prefer.

100th Day is approaching soon! It is scheduled as of now for February 13 (Yes along with our Valentine’s day party! because of that we will be combining some of our celebrations.) We will be doing lots of fun activities that day to celebrate the number 100! One thing we will be doing is dressing up like super heroes! Mr. McAboy will be dressing up like Zero the Hero that day and surprising us in our room as well! Please feel free to use anything you have at your home to make your child into a super hero, be creative and have fun! Do not stress about this as all of your children are super heroes already! We just want this to be a fun day for the kids!

Curriculum:

Bible: This week in Bible we studied the Lord’s Prayer. We went down to the prayer room at ZCS and had the opportunity to pray there as well. What a powerful moment that was to watch God work in their little lives.

Word wall word: come  ( So far this year we have done:  I, the, a, am, look, see, at. go, we, me, up, is, like, this and here.) We practice these often at school as it helps the transition into becoming a beginning reader easier as they are not struggling to sound these words out. Everyone should have a packet in their book bag of all of our words if you would like to practice them at home. They enjoy writing them and stamping them out as well!

Phonics: We studied vowels this week and learned about their long sound. We did some sorting of words by listening for their long vowel sound.

Daily 5: This week we continued to work in small groups with me as well as writing, word work, listening to reading, reading to self and reading to someone. We are doing a good job of deciding what we would like to work on and getting to work right away. I was also able to assess all the kids this week to see how they are developing as readers. It is fun to watch them as they grow in this area!

Math: We are looking for number patterns. When we wrote out 1+1=2, 1+2=3 and continued we saw that it was like counting up. When we began with 10-1=9 9-1=8 and continued we saw that it was like counting down. We also used pennies to count up to 10 and then looked for groups of ten in our math books.

Writing workshop: This week we continued working on creating pattern books and we will be continuing that over the next several weeks. A pattern book is a book where each page starts with a phrase such as “I like..” or “I see..”.  This week we specifically worked on “finger spaces” between our words as we write as well as learning about a period at the end of a sentence.

Engaging God’s world: This week we started our unit on motion. We watched a video of kids on a playground and talked about what we observed about how they moved. We also watched a video of both a lady and a child going down a slide and knocking a stuffed animal off the end. We discussed why we thought the lady made the bear go a bit farther. We then conducted experiments with our own stuffed animals and slides to see how we could get them to move and what it would take to make them stop. This is a fun unit in which the kids are asking questions and leading some of the learning on their own. It is great for developing critical thinking!

Afternoons: This week we were able to do music, art and play as normal and Thursday afternoon we were able to do our science investigations because the whole class now stays all day on Thursday! I love that!

January 13-17

Once again we had a busy week in kindergarten. We are continuing to work on academics but are also moving forward in our effort to problem solve and compromise to become better friends to all! It is so fun to watch each and everyone of your children as they strive to become more like Jesus in everything they do! Thank you for entrusting them to me this year. It has truly been a joy. I hope your homes are beginning to return to a bit of normalcy as we are moving further away from the holiday. It is fun to see the growth in our class in just the past two weeks!

We have completed filling our bucket of bears this week! We are now planning to have a pajama and 1 stuffed animal day! I have set the date for that for Tuesday January 21!

Curriculum:

Bible: This week I read from Matthew the story about the disciples feeling Jesus did not have time to see the children and how Jesus responded with “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” We talked about how much Jesus loves us and then sang several songs about the love of Jesus. By far my favorite moment of our week. We also read from our children’s Bibles about Jesus calling the 12 disciples and we discussed what it means to be a disciple of Jesus.

Word wall word: this ( So far this year we have done:  I, the, a, am, look, see, at. go, we, me, up, is, like, and ,here.)

Phonics: This week we continued to listen for the last sounds in words. We played a game similar to bingo to practice listening for those sounds.

Writing Workshop: This week in writing workshop we started learning about pattern books. We traced part of a pattern book and got to add the last page on our own. Next week we will jump into writing our own pattern books.

Math: This week we learned about the = sign and what it means. We made our own little books with our own equations of = and not =. We also took our unit 2 test and practiced being real quiet and taking a test like the “older kids” do.

Daily 5: This week I was able to work with all the groups at least once. We are really working hard at pointing to words as we read! We also did work work with special white boards and made some lists as well.

Afternoons: This week we were able to do art, music and play time as well as Bible because we now have all our friends here on Thursday afternoons. We ended our week with K singing and even had some 5th graders join us. Also ask you child about the JOY song we learned to the tune of Jingle bells. It was a fun way to talk about putting Jesus first, yourself last and others in between!

January 6-10

It was so good to be back at school and see all of our your children and their smiling faces. We practiced a lot of routines this week to get us back into the swing of things! I also started assessments this week as the first semester ends in just a week! It is hard to believe how fast this year is going! I am looking forward to a great 2020!

Also this week we had one of our classmates, Karson Huffman, fracture his elbow at recess, please keep Karson in your prayers!

Our Field Trip is scheduled for February 6 at For the Kidz gymnastics in Wyoming MI. I will be sending a field trip permission slip home this week that NEEDS to be returned for your child to participate. I will also be sending a sign up genius out soon for drivers.  Please indicate on the sign up how many children you can take! Thank you in advance for your help in this regard. I am so looking forward to this field trip and I am sure the kids will love it!

One thing you may be hearing about is our bucket of bears. This is an incentive for the kids to transition quickly and quietly. When they do a great job I put a bear(or two:)) in the bucket. When the bucket is full they will be rewarded with a pajama day in which they may also bring a small stuffed animal or small pillow.

Curriculum:

Bible: This week we started our study of Jesus’ ministry on earth. We read the story of Jesus’ baptism and talked about what it means to be baptized. It is our way of showing others we want to love and follow Jesus. We also read a devotion this week about how God made us all unique and shared what we liked about ourselves and how we are all made perfectly by God. Our new verse is Matthew 19:14, “Jesus said, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Word wall word: am ( So far this year we have done:  I, the, a, look, see, at. go, we, me, up, is, like, and ,here.)

Phonics: This week we worked on saying words slowly and listening for their first and last sounds. We sorted words together by the sounds they ended with.

Daily 5: Everyone should be bringing home a new book or two in their book bags this weekend. If you get a chance have your child read it to you they are so proud of themselves! We worked on making lists, writing sight words and listening and reading books on the ipad as well as working with Mrs. Arnold. Please continue to practice letters and sounds with them as well as the sight words, they should all be in their book bags!

Writing workshop: This week we finished working on making lists, next week we will begin writing pattern books!

Math: This week we learned about a hexagon and that it has six sides and we also reviewed positional words such as above, below, beside and next to. We put different shapes above, below, beside and next to things.

Up in Lights: This week Miriam Ortiz was up in lights. Miriam’s mom came to share about her along with her new baby sister and younger brother. It was so fun to learn more about Miriam along with watching a video of her favorite song, ‘Butterfly’s Day Out.’  Miriam is a great friend to everyone as well as a big helper everyday. We are blessed to have Miriam in our class!

Afternoons: This week we did math centers, literacy work, as well as art, music and kindergarten singing, along with our cooperative play time! Afternoons are always so much fun!

December 16-20

It seems like yesterday we had our last day of school but it has already been two weeks! We had such a great week before Christmas! A special thank you to Jill Koning and Stephanie Klein for putting our Christmas celebration together and to all who helped and donated to make it a success! It was so fun to watch the kids enjoying the celebration! Thank you too to the large number of parents who came to cheer us on at the Jingle Jog.
