God at Work

In Bible class we have been learning about Paul and how he spread the gospel. God equipped Paul with many tools to spread the Gospel to others. One was that he had Roman and Jewish citizenship, which was very useful because the Romans were in power at the time and it helped him get out of some tough spots. Another was that Paul was very smart, he knew many languages which helped him preach the gospel to many different groups of people. Another was that he was once trained to be a Pharisee so he knew the Torah and scripture very well which was useful for preaching as well. Lastly he was a tentmaker so he could use that skill on his journey to preach the gospel as well. Those are some of the tools God gave Paul to help preach the Gospel to others.

God has also been working in my life, equipping me with the tools that I need for his plan. God has been using certain experiences in my life to shape me and make me into the person he wants me to be. One thing is that he has really shown me lately is that I care. It is something that he has been building up in me a lot, he has shown me that once I put my mind to something and commit to doing it I won’t stop until I know I’ve done everything I can. He has used this to help me become a better person through helping me stick to goals he’s put in me. He’s given me a great understanding of what is right from wrong, which I know he is using for his plan for me.

We made a poster with cross-sections and information of a composite, cinder cone, and shield volcanoes. We made a model volcano of Mount Fuji, a unique thing about our model was that we had a cross section cut into the volcano with a cover over it. We also included information about it on our poster.

Christian Persecution PBL – Syria

At school, we did a project on Christian persecution in other countries. My country was Syria, we had to learn about what was going on currently in the country and we had to find a way to present that creatively. We also had to present ways that we could help persecuted Christians in Syria. Our group had a video visual telling what was going on in Syria and ways to help. We had two posters with a map of Syria, a pie chart showing the percentages of religions, and one telling about the Syrian War. We also had prayer reminder cards and a poster with the flag of Syria on it. In the video below it shows a destroyed church that our group made to represent how countless churches have been destroyed or attacked.

We built our tower in a pyramid style with a square base. We added spaghetti sticks for support on the side to equally distribute the weight. We added a mini pyramid on top of our tower to hold a spaghetti nest. The spaghetti nest is there to hold the egg and keep it safe.

Theme Writing

This is love: not that we loved God, but He loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

1 John 4:10-11

Did you know that at the end of 7th grade at ZCS you get to choose the school theme and verse for the next year? It is very cool to be apart of that process, and as a grade we choose Lost in Love as our theme for the school. We can show our theme, Lost in Love, to others in our school and to people in the world.

I can show this theme many ways at school. One way I can show our theme at school is treating others as I want to be treated. What that means to me is every day at school I am going to be kind to others, treat them well, and show them forgiveness. Another way I can show our theme at school is putting others before myself. I am going to try go the extra mile to make someone’s day and make them happier by helping them with school stuff, saying hi to them, and talking to them. The last way I am going to show our theme at school is always trying to include everyone. Whether it’s in the classroom, during break time, or after school, I want to be a person who includes others.

As Christians, we can show this theme to the world. One way we can show our theme in the world is through praying for others. All around the world people are being persecuted, or going through natural disasters, or don’t even know if they will have a meal for the next day. So we should pray for those people and make an effort to know what is going on in the world. Another way is by donating money or stuff to those who need support in our communities and around the world. Donating money has a huge impact on others around the world and gives them hope in darker times. The last way we can show our theme in the world is serving our communities by volunteering. You can do this through your church, local charities, or other organizations.

We can do this by treating others as we want to be treated, putting others before ourselves,  and always trying to include everyone. Beginning of Year Reflections

Some things I have enjoyed about school this year so far are seeing my friends again, worship team, social studies class, and going to 8th grade camp. Camp was cool because we got to do a lot of activities, get closer to our teachers and friends, be in nature, and learn what it takes to be a leader.

Some things I learned in school this year are some new math concepts, and what is expected from myself as an 8th grader. Some things expected from me are to be a leader, be respectful, and listen to others.

Some things I am looking forward to this year are basketball season, doing worship team in chapels, the 8th grade play, and some other special events 8th graders get to participate in. I am really excited for basketball because I get to play for school, and get to play with my friends.

Boat Races

Our boat was two pieces of styrofoam connected by straws with a notecard sail. Our boat didn’t finish in the first trial because it tipped over right near the beginning of the tube. We think it was because we had to much sail and not a enough weight to compensate for the air from the fan. We are going to take two parts of the sail off, and patch a spot too. We hope to finish and get 2nd or 3rd place.

Posted by lculver22 | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on August 30, 2017

This summer was very busy, but it was fun too. I went to the Holland Christian basketball camp and soccer camp. I went to my cottage at Sandy Pines and went on the boat, golfed, and hung out with my family. I went to Detroit for ODP soccer tryouts and a Tigers game. I babysat a friend, and played a lot of video games with him. I went to camp at Grace Adventures with Nick, some highlights were tubing, paintball, and man games. I went to Michigan’s Adventure with Nick and his family, we did the ripcord for the second time. I went to three soccer tournaments and we won two of them. I went to Chicago for my sister’s first soccer tournament, we watched a Chicago Fire soccer game, went to Dave and Buster’s, and I hung out with Nick. Last but not least, I went on Cade’s new boat with Nick, Kaiden, and Luke and we went wakesurfing and wakeboarding. That is what I did this summer.

Book Review

The book I most enjoyed this year was Panda-Monium by Stuart Gibbs. The genre was realistic fiction, this book takes place at a zoo in Texas. The zoo is called Fun-Jungle, and it is one of the best zoos in the United States. It has all different animals, and state of the art exhibits. There have been many crimes and mysteries at Fun-Jungle, but that doesn’t stop tickets from being constantly sold.

One of the books main characters is Teddy Fitzroy, the writer really makes you believe he is a real person. He does that by really getting the, “middle school kid” personality down on paper. I really like Teddy, he is my favorite character in the book, but also liking Teddy makes the story more fun. Teddy is a mischievous kid, he is 13 years old, and he is really good with animals, he has also solved all of the previous mysteries and crimes at Fun-Jungle. He is very brave, but can also get scared like anyone else when he gets in a bad situation.

Fun-Jungle just got permission from the Chinese to have one of their pandas. (Which are very rare, only a few thousand are still exist. But as the panda was getting transported to Fun-Jungle it was stolen. When the truck arrives that was supposed to be carrying the panda, the lead doctor traveling with it, and the panda were gone. No one knows how it happened, and the FBI are called in to help with the case. But Teddy is told to stay out of the way, and not be involved in the investigation.

Overall, I give this book 5 stars because it has a really good plot filled with a lot of twists and turns, and the characters are really fun too. This book is one of my favorites, I really enjoyed reading it. I also like it because it has a lot of mystery that makes you want to keep reading. I would strongly encourage you to pick up this book and read at least two chapters. It really sucks you in, and once you start, you can’t really stop reading this book.

African Union Day Reflection

  1. Some things that were debated were education, voting rights, discrimination, and human rights. Yes I honestly do think that if everyone had the same rights voting wise, and human rights wise it would have a positive impact.
  2. I enjoyed debating, getting signatories, and the voting process that was really fun.
  3. Doing all of the research, writing a good resolution, thinking of answers for people’s questions on the fly, and doing what is best for your country.

Invictus Reflection

One thing that was cool was the little boy who was getting at the church getting free clothes. A lady tried to give him a Springbok jersey but he refused it and ran out of the church because to him it represented apartheid. Then later on in the world cup final he was listening on the radio with the cops and then he celebrated when the Springboks won. He is beliefs were definitely changed and that was a cool representation on how South Africa as a whole was effected. Another representation was Mandela’s bodyguards, at first they didn’t like each other and they didn’t get along. But then they got closer and were doing things like playing rugby together, they ended up realizing that someone’s skin color doesn’t define their personality. Mandela came about bringing South Africa together in a perfect way. He changed his own beliefs and through Francois, the training camps the Springboks held, and when they played well it brought everyone together. It was cool how Mandela constantly wanted the best for his country. He couldn’t sleep until his country was a country for everyone, no matter what skin color.

Here is three things that I learned from the Introduction to the Africa unit today.

  1. Only some people have plumbing in their houses, the rest of the countries have to go outside.
  2. The life expectancy is lower in Central Africa compared to Northern Africa.
  3.  Many people are illiterate because they don’t go to school or drop out of school.

The card demonstration was interesting and it got me more interested for this unit on Africa that we are doing. I am excited for the African Union Day we are doing, but not as much for the research paper.

Camp Reflection Day

One verse that struck me was Galatians 4:7, it was cool to me because it said you are no longer a slave, but God’s child. It reminded me of a song that is on the radio a lot, it says, “I’m no longer a slave to fear, I am a child of God.” It was meaningful to me because it serves as a reminder that sin doesn’t hold me down anymore, and that I am God’s child. Above all, that is who I am.

Some of the goals we reflected on as a class were, be welcoming, be respectful, be caring, be kind to to others, and to be a fun-loving class while accomplishing those goals. I personally am trying hard to be caring and kind every day, to put others before myself, and it really pays off, it makes others smile, and it makes you happier too. I am doing good at being respectful, but also having fun while doing it too. I am personally going to work on being open to work with everyone and to be more welcoming.
