Newsletter 33: Week of May 27

Week Overview

It’s been a full and busy week of learning! On Thursday Maestra DeKruyter was in our classroom teaching while I got lots of assessments done for report cards. As I work through assessing each child I get to reflect on our school year together. I am so proud of each one of your children! I pray they always work “at it with all (their) hearts, as working for the Lord.” Each one of them is doing their very best and should be very proud of themselves!

Important Dates

May 28: Memorial Day Parade- Unless we touched base to say otherwise, I am planning on your child marching! We will start lining up at 8:45 am south of Main Street near the intersection of Centennial and Cherry. Please look for me! J When you drop off your child I will give you a “name sticker” and in order to pick up your child after the parade you must hand it back to me. Silly I know… but we have to have a plan to keep all our precious kiddos safe and accounted for. Thank you!

June 1: PBL Presentations 9:00. Please join us in the music room to celebrate and hear about our projects. Afterward you’re invited to  our classroom for some cookies.

June 6: Field trip to Farmers Market and Kollen Park. Please pack a sack lunch for your child. We’ll be back to school about 12:45.

June 7: Last day of school- no pm bussing or hot lunch

Curriculum

Bible: We started a new unit this week on the early church. Our first lesson was on Pentecost. What a cool story as immersion learners! Everyone began speaking in different languages!

Our last Bible verse for Kindergarten:

Por tanto vayan y hagan discípulos de todas naciones, bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo, enseñándoles a obedecer todo lo que les ha mandado a ustedes. Y les aseguro que estaré con ustedes siempre, hasta el fin del mundo. Mateo 28:19, 20

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:19, 20

Literacy: This week’s grammar focus was on the use of es and son. Es is used for singular nouns and son is used for plural nouns. Since we practiced this a lot with our aalpa, we used the verbs in the context of some writing during the Daily 5.

  • Reading strategy: Inferring
  • Read aloud: No Tengo Sueño
  • Vocabulary words
    • el sueño (dream)
    • las polillas (moths)
    • roncar (snore)
    • acostarse (to lay down)
    • travieso/a (naughty/mischievous)
  • Word wall word: son, es
  • Phrase of the week: ¿Puedo ir al próximo centro? (May I go to the next center?)
  • Letter of the week: Xx

Math: In math we started learning about 3D shapes. This week we compared a square and cube.

Exploring God’s World: On Friday we met with our 7th grade buddies again. This time we got to start working on our projects. Each group worked together to decide how they would like to present their information.

Writing Workshop: We’re working on our how-to books unit. This week we made a list of the things we know how to do well and could teach others. Your kids are experts at a lot of things! It’s fun to see how God has uniquely gifted each one of us! 🙂
