Volcano Project

Photo on 4-29-16 at 11.10 AM

This is our volcano. It represents a composite volcano. There are ten different things represented in the Volcano. Magma, magma chamber, pipe, side pipe, crater, pyroclastic flow, hot spot, lave, lava flow, and vent. We paper mached a empty pop bottle, cut the top off of it, painted it, and added the final details. I enjoyed this project a lot. It was really fun. My group was Elle, Haylie and I. It will be a quiet explosin, using baking soda and vinegar.

God’s Preperation

How has God been preparing me to do work for him?

I have had the chance to go to about 6 different countries.  These trips were not mission trips, but vacations. On these trips I saw many different cultures.  I don’t remember the first one as well as the second, but what I do remember from them is that they had a very different culture than us. I went to Haiti and Jamacia, when I was about seven. In Haiti we went to a market where they were selling many different things the people there  had made. The people there would beg us to buy their items, because that we the only way they would get food, and things they needed. I felt bad for all of these people, because I was going back on a cruise ship, and they had nothing. Two of my cousins even traded food from the ship for items that a man was selling. They needed food so bad. It broke my heart to see them needing these things, and I get them handed to me without even thinking about it. The next place I went to was Jamacia. In Jamacia we didn’t see that many people. The only people we saw were the kids going to school. These kids looked to happy, and they have close to nothing. They were waving to us, and had huge smiles on their faces. Here we get mad about little things and don’t think about all the small things we have that other people don’t have. We also saw a man who had to take a bath, in the creek. This was the only way he could take a shower. The only way he could get clean. This makes me ralize how blessed we are to have showers. The next trip I went on I was in 5th grade. In Hondouras, we got our hair braided. The only way the lady who did our hair can get money, is braided tourists hair. They have a small buissness, and that’s how they get money. We also went to a zoo. The zoo we went to is not like zoo’s here. .It was very small, and the animals were runing where ever they wanted to. But the man was so proud of what he had. That amazed me. He was so happy! In Belize we went on a boat ride, and than to mayan ruins. On the boat ride we saw a lady washing her clothes in the creek. It was sad to see that, because we just stick our clothes in the washer, and their clean. We don’t even think about it.The last place we went was Mexico. We didn’t see many people there, and went to the beach, and scuba diving.  In all these trips it made me realize how blessed we are. Before I went on the trip in th grade, I asked my mom and Grandma if we could bring tarps to all the people, because that is how they make their houses. They said no, because we wouldn’t have anywhere to put them. It made me sad to realize that I could help these people. They told me that it was very thought full, and that I had a very giving heart for these people. I hope that someday I can bring things to people who don’t have all of the things we need. I think that God is preparing to do mission work. I am very excited to be going on a mission trip to west Virgina this summer with youth group!

Christan Persecution

My country is Egypt. In Eygpt many people are destroying buildings that belong to Christians. They are buring them down, so the CHristians have nowhere to learn about God.

Spaghetti Tower

what went well was that our tower stood up, and we didn’t go over budget. What didn’t go well was that our tower fell so we only had a short tower. My favorite part was that we got to do something hands on, and not just take notes in class. My least favorite part was that our egg fell from our tower.

Mystery Writing

The Stolen Boat

This is the mystery of the stolen boat. The owner of the boat, Janice Markvluwer, noticed it was stolen when she came up to her cottage. Her cottage is on Hamlin lake, In Ludington. It connects to Lake Michigan. The boat is a blue pontoon boat. The boat is very old, over thirty years. She has left it there all the rest of the summers, and nobody had ever stolen it before. The Rotmans, her neighbors to the right , had just built a new cottage, and had come up the day before. They say the boat was gone when they got there. They thought that she was getting it fixed, since it doesn’t run very well, and has a very small motor. It only has a 30 horse power motor.  There are four other cottages to the left, and everyone else was there, except for the people who own the cottage directly next to her on the left, they had just sold it, and live in Chicago and barely ever came up anyways. She hadn’t met the new owners yet, but they sounded nice when she talked to them on the phone, when they wanted to hear about the lake. They asked a bunch of questions, like anyone who would buy a new cottage.

Behind our cottage is a hill, and on top of the hill are more cottages. There is an old grumpy man who lives on the top, in one of the cottages. The old grumpy man was there three days before it happened, but had left two days before Janice got there. Janice’s neighbors, who have been the same since she bought the cottage, would never steal the boat, well the people in the cottage to the left might. They probably wouldn’t, because they live in California, and said they wouldn’t be coming up for another two months. They people to the left have a boat, it has bullet holes in the bottom, from the man who owned the boat and tried shooting raccoons who were living in the boat at the time. They haven’t been able to use the boat in many many years. The people who bought the cottage go the boat as well. They would have done it because they would want a new boat. But Jan thought that they wouldn’t have stolen it because they had never been to michigan before.

The old guy who lives behind Janice is always tell her to stop burning her plastic, and has been rude to her since he moved in. The new owners of the cottage sounded very suspicious when they called. Janice remembered that they asked if she had a boat. They sounded very interested in it. Then there is the her grandson Drew Funckes, who has wanted her boat since he was four. He always tries to take it for rides when he goes up there.

She contacted the new owners, and they said that they hadn’t been to their cottage yet. So it couldn’t be them. All of her other neighbors would never do that, they are very loyal to her. She decided to contact the old grumpy guy. He never answered his phone, so she called up her son in law, Gary Lawrencen , and he drove up to the old man’s cottage. Sitting in his old, broken down garage was Jan’s old pontoon boat. The old grumpy man went to jail, and his cottage was taken a

Why is it important that we study Christian persecution?

It is important, because we need to know how other Christians are treated around the world. It is amazing that we have the freedom because most countries don’t have this freedom. It is important to realize what happens to other Christians because it makes us realize how good we have it, and how much people love God, and how much we should love him.

Ideal Church Vs. Early Church

This week in Bible class we talked about our Ideal church and the Early church. In our Ideal church we had things like beds instead of chairs, tv’s, pool’s, hot tubs, and things like that. The early church had things like these; everyone together, shared possessions, communion, give to all who need, and putting God above all else. After we talked about this we realized that our ideal church had materialistic things, and the early church had Godly things. Our Ideal church was self centered.

Math Project

  1. Martha and Bertha 82 year old Grandma’s, who live in a nursing home, were going on a walk. They walked 600 feet to the nearest intersection where they turned right and walked 300 more feet. They stopped at a flower shop to buy their favorite flowers, sunflowers and roses, then they walked on a diagonal path, in a park, back to their nursing home. How many feet did they walk to get home?Steps:
    1. Write the Pythagorean Theorem

    A2+B2=C2

    1. Put the numbers from the word problem into Pythagorean Theorem.

    6002+ 3002=c2

    1. Make the A (600) and B (300) squared.

    360000+90000= c2

    1. Add A and B together after they are squared.

    450000=c2

    1. Find the square root of A and B together.

    450000

    1. The square root of A and B=C

God sightings

This week I saw God in my youth group. I got to youth group at Community Reformed Church. In youth group we learned about Peter. We have been doing a series about him for the last three weeks. The first week we learned that we need to trust God, like how Peter trusted God that he could calm the storm. The second week we learned that we need to follow God, like how Peter followed Jesus and walked on the water. This week we learned that we need to use the gifts that God gave us. We read Acts 3.

Thematic Writing

The book I choose to write about is Divergent. It is written by Veronica Roth. The book is about a divergent girl tris. Divergent means that they show more than one trait in a simulation. A simulation is when you get a shot of something and then you go into a state of mind where you think something’s happening to you, but it’s actually not. She is three of them;dauntless, abnegation, and erudite. Dauntless are the brave, abnegation are the selfless, and erudite are the intelligent.  She chooses dauntless, which is the group of people that fight. In Divergent the main conflict is that Tris is Divergent, the theme is to be brave even through hard times. This lesson is learned throughout the whole book.

A part of this story where the theme is shown is when Al and some of his friends attack Tris. The three boys attacked her in the middle of the night, and take her to the valley in the middle of the dauntless headquarters. There are only small walkways with no railings to walk on.  Then they hang her over the edge of the bridge, and try to kill her. They want to kill her because she is doing very good in their training, and they don’t want her to be #1.  Suddenly Four, their trainer, comes and saves Tris before she can fall. Tris had to be brave when this was happening, and had to trust that someone would save her, or that she could pull herself back up.

Another part where Tris has to be brave is when she goes into simulations. In simulations you get faced with your fears and have to overcome them to get out of the simulations. Some of her fears are drowning, fire, and birds. She gets trapped in a glass room, that is filling with water. She gets attacked by huge birds, She gets in a fire. She can overcome them easily, but it is still hard to be in them. She is one of the fastest people to ever get out of a simulation. It takes her about a very short amount of time to get out. She is the second fastest in divergent.

A place where Tris has to be brave is when all of the other dauntless go under a simulation and they don’t know where they are or what they are doing. They also have no control over their bodies. Tris tries to fit in with all of the other people, and gets on the train with them. She finds Four, and finds out he is divergent. Divergent’s don’t get affected by this simulation. They go to the abnegation subdivisions, and start attacking them. Tris and Four try to fit in, but then turn on the other dauntless leaders. They attack them, but there are more dauntless that stop them. They had to be brave in this moment and hope that they weren’t going to die, or get wounded.

In Divergent the main conflict is that Tris is Divergent, the theme is to be brave even through hard times. This lesson is learned throughout the whole book. I liked this book a lot. My favorite parts were when Tris got first out of everyone who joined dauntless, and when they won the paintball capture the flag.

Nitrogen Cycle

imgresI have the Nitrogen Cycle. This cycle is when the nitrogen travels through the earth and its atmosphere. Nitrogen is in many different things. When its lightning, raining, hailing, snowing or sleeting outside, the nitrogen from those things go into the dirt. The nitrogen from plants go into animals when they eat the plants. The nitrogen gets into the plants from its roots. When the animal goes to the bathroom the nitrogen goes back into the dirt. The nitrogen from the lightning, rain, hail, snow or sleet can also go into a body of water. The fish will eat the algae that the nitrogen goes into, and than there is nitrogen in the fish. When the fish dies its skeleton goes into the earth under the water, and the nitrogen goes into the dirt when the bones decay.

Descriptive Writing

Nicole Funckes

Mrs.Roskamp

The bird card reminded me of when I saw a bald eagle on a sea-doo ride with my oldest brother. We we on the sea-doo in upper hamlin, the upper part of the lake we were on. I could feel the water hitting me in the face, as he turned left and right.  The water was as flat as glass, making us feel as if we were riding in the clouds. He drove really close to the edge of the lake, where there is reeds, and mush, and trees. I looked up and saw the bald eagle diving down as if it was going into the water. Then it swooped up and headed for the trees.

The ladder card reminded me of when I climbed the climbing tower at Camp Geneva this summer. My heart was pounding, like a cheetah running towards its prey. I put my first foot on the rope and started climbing. I climbed up the next part, a series of three tires. Next it was a rope ladder, that looked easier than it actually was. Then I climbed up the last part, a netted rope and some fake rocks. When I got to the top my hands were shaking. I climbed down my hands still shaking. When I got to the bottom everyone cheered for Ashley and me.

The globe card reminded me of when my family and I took a cruise. We started out driving to chicago at six in the morning. Then we got on the plane and took it to Huston, Texas. The houses looked like tiny doll houses. We stayed in a hotel with all of my cousins, and aunts and uncles. The next day we got on a bus and drove to Galveston, Texas. When we got closer to the docking area, I could see the huge cruise ships waiting for us to board. We waited until it was our turn to get on the boat and we got on. We first stopped at Roatan, Honduras. Then we stopped at Belize city, Belize. Then we went to Cozumel, Mexico. Then we took the boat back to Galveston, Texas and got off. We had to find our luggage in a huge warehouse, which was harder than finding a needle in a haystack.

Theme Writing

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house;yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

Last May our grade went to Camp Roger for 7th grade leadership camp.We went Ziplining, and also came up with a theme for this school year. Our theme this year, “Built on the Rock”, means a lot to me as both an 8th grader at  ZCS and as a Christian in the world.

As in 8th grader in ZCS this verse means that I have been built on the rock. Being built on the rock means that I have a good relationship with God, and that even through hard times it won’t break. Unlike having a foundation (relationship) on the sand, where it will fall apart and break. It also means that all of the younger kids at school look up so me. So I have to be a good example to them and be a good leader. With having a good relationship with God, and acting like him.

As a christian in the world the verse means that through everything hard God will be there, if I listen to him, and act like him. It also means that we need to walk through life being proud that was believe in God, not ashamed that we follow him, even if that means we will be punished for it. Also people in the world might not agree with my beliefs, and try to get me to believe what they believe, but I have to have a good foundation on the rocks and trust God.

As being a christian and an 8th grader in the world means that I need to be a good example of being a christian. Also that I need to have a good relationship with God. Our theme this year, “Built on the Rock”, means a lot to me as both an 8th grader at ZCS and as a Christian in the world

Africa Union Day

Africa Union Day is when we mimic an Africa Union debate. We each have a country in Africa,we have been researching about for an essay, that we acted like we were representatives of that country. There was two or three people in each country. We made resolutions to the problem in Burundi. The conflict between the Hutu and Tutsi in Burundi started in the 1960’s. The country I have is Rwanda. Rwanda is one of the neighboring countries of Burundi. Rwanda is very similar to Burundi in many ways. They both have had very much conflict in the past years. They are both also moderately poor, and have many refugees.  I think it was very cool that we got to mimic the African Union because we learned a lot about how they solve problems in Africa. My favorite part about African Union Day was that we got to work with other countries and make resolutions for the problem. I wish that we would have had more time to work with the other people in our groups, and share our thoughts about the problem.

Invictus Response

I choose the relationship between Nelson Mandela’s guards. At first their was very few guards, and they all had darker skin. Than Mandela decided he needed white and black guards, because everyone was even. When the black guards heard their was going to be other white guards with them they got angry. They didn’t want anything to do with them. The first time they went anywhere with the President all the blacks were in a car and the whites were in another. Gradually they became to like each other. They played rugby together. At the rugby world cup game they all worked together to keep the President safe. At the end when the springboks team won all of the guards were very excited and shook hands and celebrated together. When they drove the President back home all of the guards were intertwined. The blacks and whites wern’t separated.

This represents post-apartheid because all of the guards became friends and didn’t hate each other.

Africa

What impacted me the most is when we had to say weather the people were born in Africa or not. Most people think that people with light skin are from america, but when we did the activity yesterday in social studies it made me realize that theirs a diversity of skin colors in Africa.

Spring is here

The plants are growing as fast as lightning

The rain is falling in buckets.

It is as warm as a sunny day,

or a summer day in Florida.

The snow is melting as fast as it fell,

and the puddles are growing twice as fast.

The grass is growing nice and green,

and everyone is playing on it.
