Math Lessons with Mrs. Boerkoel- Kdg-5th

2020-2021

Welcome to Mrs. Boerkoel’s Math Lessons Page!

Below you will find all of the lesson plan information for home days of learning.  The most recent week’s lessons will be posted at the top of the blog page. All of the materials, handouts, and supplies will be sent home with students so they will be equipped with everything they (and you) need for a successful home day of learning. Please let me know if you have any questions as we learn and grow together!

I can’t believe I’m writing the final blog post of the year…and forever! This has been a crazy, but amazing year and I’m so grateful that I got to spend every day IN PERSON with your awesome kids! This is such a bittersweet time as we are excited about finishing the school year, but also grieving that we won’t all be together again next year. I have absolutely loved teaching in the SHC program for the last four years, and I am so grateful for the chance to work alongside you in your child(ren)’s education. I will never forget my time in this program and I’ll cherish the memories forever. I am excited that I will be remaining on staff at ZCS, although in a different capacity next year. I have accepted a part time position as an Academic Administrative Assistant, so I will be doing more clerical and office work. I will definitely miss teaching, but I’m just thrilled that I get to stay at ZCS and have the opportunity to at least see some of your kids in the halls next year! I will be praying for you all as you transition to something new next year! Your kids are amazing and I know that God has big plans for them all.  Please don’t be a stranger! I will still have the same email address, and I’ll be here at ZCS next year, so hopefully I can still connect with many of you.  God’s blessings to you all!

For the home days on Friday and Tuesday, all of the grades will be working on some math review packets that I sent home.  These packets review all of the math concepts we have worked on this year.  It is designed to be a packet for you to work through with your kids this summer to help maintain the learning we’ve accomplished.  For Friday and Tuesday, please have your child pick 2 pages to complete each day.  Each side of the paper counts at one page, so if they do the front and back of one page that will count for one day’s work.  They can choose any activity they want from the packet.  (However, the 1st-3rd grade packets have some cootie catchers the kids can make at the end of the packet- please save those to do over the summer.)  Please send the 4 completed pages back to school on Wednesday.  I also told the kids that if they complete their packet over the summer and get it back to me somehow (you could even email me some pictures or just let me know they completed it), I will give them a special treat.  The kindergarten-first grade students should also complete a calendar time both Friday and Tuesday, and the 2nd-5th graders should do fact practice on Freckle for both days and the warm up for Friday only (no warm ups next week).

A couple of notes:

  • The kindergarten packet contains two different packets.  One was a more updated version, but I liked parts of both of them so I decided to send both packets home.
  • 4th-5th grade packets have an answer key stapled separately at the back.  I would recommend taking this and putting it somewhere to use only to check their work.
  • It is also EXTREMELY important to continue practicing math facts over the summer! You can use flashcards, games, worksheets, or whatever works best for you and your kids.  If you need ideas, I’d recommend searching on Pinterest for math facts games.  There’s lots of different ideas! Kindergarten – second graders should be working on addition and subtraction within 20, and 3rd-5th graders should be working on multiplication and division up to 12×12.

If you have any questions at all over the summer, please feel free to contact me! My email address is staying the same!

Have a great summer!

May 24, 2021

Here is your home day work for Tuesday:

*Kdg/1st should start with calendar time and 2nd-5th should start with their daily warm up and at least one session of fact practice in Freckle.

*Please note: Please initial each worksheet after you have checked it over (using the answer key) and fixed any mistakes with your child.  I am expecting that all of the worksheets (with the exception of the warm ups) come back with no mistakes.  In an effort to save time, I will not be checking the home day work for accuracy.  When you see a paper come back with just a check (instead of a star), it means that I looked it over briefly but did not check for accuracy.  Thanks for your help with this!

Kdg: Please do pg. 353-354 to review Unit 5.  We will be taking a test on Wednesday.  Please also continue practicing counting by 10s and 1s to 100.  I will be doing assessment on these (and other) things for the report card on Thursday.

1st: Today we practiced adding the value of like coins by counting by 1s, 5s, 10s, or 25s (counting by 5s and 25s was difficult, so reviewing those would be helpful).  Please do the packet I sent home to continue practicing this.  You may want to save the first page of the packet for last! Please also continue practicing the names and values of the different coins as those are still a bit shaky.  This will be our last day of practicing coins.

2nd: Please do Lesson 7-1 and pg. 369-372 (skip pg. 370) from the workbook.  You may help with the measuring and marking squares on the shapes.  The focus for students is more on dividing the shapes into the correct number of equal parts.  I sent home the squares you will need to do Activity 1 in the lesson.  You do not need to send these back to school.

3rd: Please do pg. 393-395 (we will do pg. 396 in class on Wednesday) from the workbook to review Unit 6.  See the following changes to the workbook pages:

  • #2: Just solve the problem- skip parts a-e
  • #3: Skip
  • #6B: just solve- don’t need to explain

4th: Please finish pg. 405-408 from the workbook to review Unit 8.  We got started on it in class today.  I also sent home the protractor in case you need it, so please make sure these come back to school on Wednesday.  We will finish up the review on Wednesday and take a test on Thursday.

5th: Please finish pg. 305-310 to review Unit 7.  You may skip #7, 9, 10, 15, and 19.  We will take a test in class on Wednesday.

May 20, 2021

Here is your home day work for Friday:

Kdg: Please do Lesson 5-22 and pg. 345-346 from the workbook. Keep practicing counting by 10s and 1s to 100!

1st: Continue working on identifying coins. Please do the coin cut and paste worksheets that I sent home. Also, play the “Spin and Cover” game that I sent home. To play this game, you will use a pencil and a paperclip as a spinner. Each player spins the spinner, and colors in a box that matches that coin (each player will need their own color). If there are none left to color in, their turn is skipped. You can play that the person with the most boxes colored in at the end is the winner, or the first person to get 5 in a row. I copied the game on both sides of the paper so you can play more than once if you want to.  You are welcome to play with your child or an older sibling can play too!

2nd: Please do pg. 359-362 to review Unit 6. You may skip problems #4, 7, and 14. For number 15, just draw a proof drawing (pictures of the base ten blocks) and discuss together. They do not need to write a long answer for that one.

3rd: Please do Lesson 6-9 and pg. 385-386 from the workbook.

4th: Please do Lesson 8-10 and pg. 395-396 from the workbook.

5th: Please do Lesson 7-7 and pg. 301-302 from the workbook.

Kdg: Please do Lesson 5-17 and pg. 331-332 from the workbook.  Keep practicing counting to 100!

1st: We have finished our curriculum and are going to wrap up the year by doing some supplemental math practice.  We’re going to start with learning about coins and money.  In order to introduce each coin, I’m going to have you make a little money flip book at home.  I put the papers in order (and numbered them for you- except you will cut the numbers off).  You will help your child cut out each page, fill in the blanks, and then color the coins.  You can refer to the document HERE for more directions.  See pg. 14-18 for the information to go in the blanks.  When it’s finished, you can put one or two staples in the top of the pages so that it flips upward.

2nd: Please do Lesson 6-12 and pg. 345-346 from the workbook.

3rd: Please do Lesson 6-4 and the following problems: pg. 367 odds, pg. 368 all, pg. 369 #20-21, and pg. 370 #24-25. The students may need a reminder about comparison bars so see the teacher’s manual for information about those if needed.

4th: Please do Lesson 8-5 and the following problems: pg. 369 all, pg. 370 evens, and pg. 371 odds. You may skip pg. 372. I sent home a template with a protractor on it to use for the lesson. Please make sure this comes back to school on Wednesday as I don’t have any extras.

5th: Please do Lesson 7-4 and the following problems: pg. 291 all, pg. 292-293 evens, skip pg. 294.

May 13, 2021

Here is your home day work for Friday:

Kdg: Please do Lesson 5-14 and pg. 323-324 from the workbook.  Please also just do ONE night sky poster for the 5+5 partners of ten.  This is the last one! 🙂 Continue working on memorizing these partners of ten.

1st: Please do Lesson 8-6 and pg. 345-346 from the workbook.  I have been noticing that the first graders are struggling with their addition facts, so please work on these at home (and continue over the summer).

2nd: Please do Lesson 6-10 and pg. 341-342 from the workbook.

3rd: Please do Lesson 6-1 and pg. 355-358 from the workbook.  On pg. 355, they can just write 4 equations instead of 8.  Do pg. 356 all, skip pg. 357, and do pg. 358 all.

4th: Please finish Lesson 8-1.  We did Activity 1 and pg. 351-352 from the workbook in class today.  You will pick up at Activity 2 and do pg. 353-354 from the workbook.  It might also be a good idea to review points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles and how to name them (see Activity 1).  When we learn the terms acute, obtuse, and right, I always tell them that acute angles are smaller than 90 degrees because cute things (babies, puppies, etc.) are usually cute and when you say obtuse, your mouth opens wide just like the large obtuse angles.  Please also do the sorting angles activity from Activity 3 and pg. 354A (these do not need to come back to school).

5th: Please do Lesson 7-2 and pg. 285-286 from the workbook.

May 10, 2021

Kdg: Please do Lesson 5-8 ad pg. 303-304 from the workbook.  Please also make night sky posters for the 6+4/4+6 partners of ten.

1st: Please do Lesson 8-5 and pg. 343-344 from the workbook.

2nd: Please do Lesson 6-8 and pg. 333-334 from the workbook.  Be sure to use math mountains to help solve the word problems if they are unsure of what to do.  I always start by putting the numbers we know in the math mountain by deciding if it is a total or a partner.  Then they can easily see if they are missing a total or partner and how to solve for the missing number.

3rd: Please finish the review pages that were sent home.  They can skip the problems that are crossed off (#2, 9, 14, 15, 17).  We will be taking a test in class on Wednesday.  I have also been noticing that the third graders are not confident with their multiplication and division facts.  Be sure to keep practicing these at home and continue over the summer!

4th: Please finish the review pages that were sent home.  They may skip the problems that are crossed off (#5, 7, 16, 19).  We will be taking a test in class on Wednesday.

5th: Please finish the review pages that were sent home.  They may skip the problems that are crossed off (#10, 12, 18, 20).  We will be taking a test in class on Wednesday.

May 6, 2021

Here is your home day work for Friday:

Kdg: Please do Lesson 5-6 and pg. 291-292 from the workbook.  Please practice with partners of ten (at school we have been practicing by me saying one partner and the students saying the partner that makes ten) and make night sky posters for 7+3 and 3+7.

1st: Please do Lesson 8-3 and pg. 339-340 from the workbook.  Please also do the Homework 8-3 worksheet to practice the “Show All Totals” method.  Please introduce this method as described in the teacher’s manual, but it’s not something the students need to master.  They will be able to choose the method they like best after we have learned them all (most students choose the traditional “New Groups Above” method).

2nd: Please do Lesson 6-6 and pg. 327-328 from the workbook.  The new thing you are introducing in this lesson is adding the hundreds digit.  They know how to add two digit numbers so the biggest thing will be making sure they bring that new group over to the next place value.  They can use any method they want (as described in the teacher’s manual), but they are used to using the “New Groups Above” method.

3rd: Please do Lesson 7-8 and pg. 435-437 from the workbook.  You can skip pg. 438 and Activity 3 in the lesson.

4th: Please do Lesson 7-12 and pg. 335-336 from the workbook.

5th: Please do Lesson 8-16 and pg. 353-354 from the workbook.  You can skip Activity 3 in the lesson.  Students should know the vocabulary from this lesson after this lesson as we will not be doing much more review with these terms before the test.

May 3, 2021

Kdg: Please do Lesson 5-4 and pg. 285-286 from the workbook.  Please use the stars and black construction paper to make posters for 8+2 and 2+8 in the same way as the posters you did on Friday.  You are welcome to help with coloring/cutting more stars to save some time.

1st: Please review Lesson 8-2 by doing the Homework and Remembering worksheets that I sent home.  We learned how to use the “New Groups Above” method in class today, but I have not gone over the “New Groups Below” method as described in the lesson.  Please go over this method (see teacher’s manual) before doing the worksheets.  They are welcome to use either method when they do the worksheet.  They do not need to draw the sticks and circles unless it would be helpful for them.  I was noticing in class today that the first graders are struggling with some of their math facts so reviewing some strategies for adding the numbers together would be helpful too.

2nd: Please do Lesson 6-4 and pg. 319-320 from the workbook.  Be sure to discuss Activity 2 in the lesson because that’s not covered on the workbook page.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 7-5.  You will pick up at Activity 3 in the lesson.  Use pg. 425A and 427A to do the lesson activities and send the cut pieces back to school in a baggie or envelope with your child’s name on it.  Please do pg. 425-426 from the workbook.  The students should know the names of the shapes on pg. 426 by memory after this lesson.

4th: Please do Lesson 7-10 and pg. 331-332 from the workbook.  I introduced decimals and the tenths and hundredths place value today, but some review of this might be helpful (see Lesson 7-8 and 7-9).  You will be comparing decimals for this lesson.  I always have the kids add zeros after the numbers to make both numbers have the same number of decimal places.  Then it’s easier to compare.  For example, to compare 0.63 and 0.6, I would have them add a zero to the 0.6 to make it 0.60.  Then they can compare 63 hundredths to 60 hundredths.  I also try to relate it to dimes and pennies as needed.  So they can compare the value of 63 pennies to 60 pennies.

5th: Please do Lesson 8-14 and pg. 349-350 from the workbook.  Cut out and use the shapes on pg. 350A to do the lesson activities.  Please send these back to school in an envelope or baggie with your child’s name on it.

April 29, 2021

Here is your home day work for Friday:

Kdg: Please do Lesson 5-3 and pg. 283-284 from the workbook.  Please also make a “Night Sky” poster to show 9+1 and 1+9 as partners of ten.  I sent home the stars that we started coloring and cutting in class today (they may need to cut and color more) and some black construction paper.  They will use the big (purple) stars for one partner and the small (yellow) stars for the other partner.  So, for one of them, they will put 9 big stars and 1 small star on the page.  On the other one, they would flip the partners and do 1 big star and 9 small stars.  Please also have them write the matching equations on the white strips of paper and glue that to their posters too.

1st: Please do the Homework/Remembering 8-1 worksheet (both sides) to review Lesson 8-1.

2nd: Please do Lesson 6-2 and pg. 315-316 from the workbook.  On Activity 3 in the teacher’s manual, please do discuss expanded form, but we will not be using secret code cards so you can skip that part.

3rd: Please do Lesson 7-3 and pg. 409-410 #1-12, and pg. 411-412 #17-28.

Sarah DeVries is teaching 4th-5th grade math this week.  Her directions are below.  If you have questions, feel free to email both of us! Her email address is sdevries@zcs.org.

4th: Please do Lesson 7-5 pg. 315-316. Also complete pg. 317-318 by doing the even numbered problems.

5th: Please do Lesson 8-9 pg. 337-338 (even numbers only) and Lesson 8-10 pg. 339-340 (even numbers only). A reminder, to add or subtract numbers with units, they must have the same units. Additionally, for pg. 340, there are several approaches to solve the word problems. There is a metric conversion chart in their folder they can use for any unit conversions.

267-270 to review Unit 4.  We will be taking a test in class on Wednesday.

1st: Please do pg. 327-330 to review Unit 7.  We will be taking a test in class on Wednesday.

2nd: Please do pg. 301-304 to review Unit 5.  We will be taking a test in class on Wednesday.

3rd: Please do Lesson 7-1.  Look for containers at home to show sizes of a cup, pint, quart, and gallon (see Teacher’s Manual).  Please do pg. 403-404 all, and pg. 405-406 evens only.

Sarah DeVries is teaching 4th-5th grade math this week.  Her directions are below.  If you have questions, feel free to email both of us! Her email address is sdevries@zcs.org.

4th: Please do Lesson 7-3 pg. 303-304 from the workbook. For pg. 304, sometimes one whole is a group of items. The purpose of these problems is not necessarily to find how many, but to compare the size of various fractions in word problems.

5th: Please do Lesson 8-4 pg. 329-303. A reminder, the formula for finding volume is (volume (V) = length (L) x width (w) x height (h)).  Also, a numerical expression is a variety of numbers that are combined by mathematical operations. For example, (2 x 4) x 5 is a numerical expression.

April 19, 2021

Kdg: Please do Lesson 4-20 and pg. 257-258 from the workbook.  We will be doing Activity 1 in class so you can skip that activity.

1st: Please do Lesson 7-12 and pg. 319-320 from the workbook.  Be sure to do the lesson activities.  You will need to find some pieces of paper or string (or other objects) at home to order by length.

2nd: Please do Lesson 5-7 and pg. 287-290 from the workbook.

3rd: Please do lesson 5-8 and pg. 337-338 from the workbook.  You are introducing equivalent fractions on a number line.  In class today, they learned about finding equivalent fractions with fraction bars so feel free to relate the number line to a bar to help with understanding.

4th: Please finish pg. 291-292 to finish the Unit 6 Review.  We got pretty far in class today so there is not much work left to do.  Feel free to go back and review any topics your child might not be confident on to prepare for the test on Wednesday.

5th: Please do Lesson 8-2 and pg. 319-320 from the workbook.  We are still working on finishing up the Unit 5 test, but I am going to have you get a start on the next unit.  You may have noticed we skipped a couple of units (and Lesson 8-1- we’ll do that one in class)! I want to be sure to cover Unit 8 about geometry now because students tend to score lower on that topic on the MAP tests.

April 15, 2021

Here is your home day work for Friday:

Kdg: Please do Lesson 4-18 and pg. 249-250 from the workbook.  We already did pg. 251 in class so you don’t need to do anything with that part of the lesson.

1st: Please do Lesson 7-9 and pg. 309-312 from the workbook.  Be sure to do the lesson activities and see the teacher’s manual for directions for the workbook pages.  I sent home the bag of shapes you will need to use for the lesson activities.  Please send this back to school on Monday.

2nd: Please do Lesson 5-5 and pg. 283-284 from the workbook. We took a class survey today to gather data to display on the graphs on pg. 283.  We decided to ask the class about their favorite sport.  They will use the following data to make their graphs:

Gymnastics- 4 votes
Running- 2 votes
Basketball- 7 votes
Swimming- 3 votes

3rd: Please do Lesson 5-6.  Please do pg. 327-328 all, and pg. 329-332 #5-6, 9, 11, 13, and 15.  I think that amount of problems is doable, but if it’s taking too long, feel free to shorten pg. 329-332 as needed.  The shapes your child will need to cut out and use for the activities are on pg. 327A.  These pieces do not need to come back to school.

4th: Please do pg. 287-288 to start reviewing unit 6.

5th: Please finish the Unit 5 Review pages that were sent home.  We will be starting the unit test on Monday.

April 12, 2021

Kdg: Please do Lesson 4-15 and pg. 239-240 from the workbook.

1st: Please do Lesson 7-7 and pg. 303-304 from the workbook.  Be sure to do the lesson activities! I sent home the shapes that will need to be cut out and a baggie of the other shapes we talked about today in class.  Please add the new shapes to that baggie and send it back to school on Wednesday.

2nd: Please review Lesson 5-2 by doing the Homework/Remembering 5-2 worksheet.  The answer key for this is at the end of Lesson 5-2 in the teacher’s manual.

3rd: Please do lesson 5-2.  Activity 1 in the lesson is optional, but you may want to do it if they are not understanding the concept.  Please do pg. 313-314 all and pg. 315-316 evens only.

4th: Please do Lesson 6-7.  Do pg. 275-276 all and pg. 277-278 evens only (they don’t have to draw a model for #20 if they don’t need it).

5th: Please do Lesson 5-11 and pg. 229-230 from the workbook.

March 29, 2021

Kdg: Please do Lesson 4-12 and pg. 233-234 from the workbook.  I sent home the base ten blocks and teen equation cards you will need for the lesson activities.  Please send these back to school on Wednesday.

1st: Please do Lesson 7-3 and pg. 289-290 from the workbook.  Please also do 3 pages from the “Our Busy Day” book that’s described in the lesson.  I sent home the 3 pages I would like her to do.  She just needs to draw a picture (detailed with color) of what she does at 7:00, 8:00, and 9:00 (am) on a school day.

2nd: Please do Lesson 5-1 and pg. 264-264, 267-268 from the workbook.  You may skip the lesson activity about making a clock and just use the one that I sent home.  Please make sure this comes back to school on Wednesday.

3rd: Please do pg. 303-304 to finish the Unit 4 Review.  We will be starting the test in class on Wednesday.

4th: Please do Lesson 6-4 and pg. 265-266 from the workbook.  You may skip Activity 1.  Activity 3 (pg. 266A from the workbook) is optional.  Be sure to discuss mixed numbers as this is a new concept.

5th: Please do Lesson 5-8.  You may skip the lesson activities.  Just discuss the pattern of moving the decimal in the divisor and dividend (may need to add zeros in the dividend).  We discussed it today, but we did not have any problems with a decimal point in the dividend yet so that part will be new.  Please do the Homework/Remembering 5-8 worksheet.  Please do all of the Homework side, but they may do events only on the Remembering side.

There will not be any work for Friday this week! Have a great spring break!

March 25, 2021

Here is your home day work for Friday:

*Kdg/1st should start with calendar time and 2nd-5th should start with their daily warm up and at least one session of fact practice in Freckle.

*Please note: Please initial each worksheet after you have checked it over (using the answer key) and fixed any mistakes with your child.  I am expecting that all of the worksheets (with the exception of the warm ups) come back with no mistakes.  In an effort to save time, I will not be checking the home day work as carefully this year.  When you see a paper come back with just a check (instead of a star), it means that I looked it over briefly but did not check for accuracy.  Thanks for your help with this!

Kdg: Please do Lesson 4-10 and pg. 227-228 from the workbook.

1st: Please do Lesson 7-1 and pg. 281-282.  Be sure to go through the lesson activities to introduce parts of a clock and telling time.  I sent a small clock home for you to use, so please make sure those come back to school on Monday.

2nd: Please finish the Unit 4 Review.  Please finish pg. 258 (we started in class) and do pg. 281-282 from the workbook.  This page is usually used as a quiz, but I am just using it for some extra practice this time.  You are welcome to give guidance as needed.  We will be taking a test in class on Monday.

3rd: Please do Lesson 4-15 and pg. 293-294 from the workbook.

4th: Please do Lesson 6-2 and pg. 255-258 from the workbook.  They may skip #22 if needed to shorten the assignment a bit.

5th: Please finish Lesson 5-6 and do pg. 211-212 from the workbook.  I introduced dividing a decimal number today, but you will be picking up at Activity 2 in the lesson to introduce adding zeros to a dividend.  This is a new concept for them.  I would suggest using notebook paper sideways to help them keep their numbers lined up.  We did this in class today so they know how to do it.

March 22, 2021

Here is your home day work for Tuesday:

*Kdg/1st should start with calendar time and 2nd-5th should start with their daily warm up and at least one session of fact practice in Freckle.

*Please note: Please initial each worksheet after you have checked it over (using the answer key) and fixed any mistakes with your child.  I am expecting that all of the worksheets (with the exception of the warm ups) come back with no mistakes.  In an effort to save time, I will not be checking the home day work as carefully this year.  When you see a paper come back with just a check (instead of a star), it means that I looked it over briefly but did not check for accuracy.  Thanks for your help with this!

Kdg: Please do Lesson 4-9 (Activity 1 only) and pg. 225-226 from the workbook. Be sure to discuss Activity 1in the lesson.  We will do Activity 2-3 in class on Wednesday.

1st: Please do pg. 271-272 from the workbook to review Unit 6.  We did pg. 273-274 in class today to review comparison bars.  These are still tricky for the girls, so any additional practice you can do with these at home would be helpful! We will be taking a test on Wednesday.

2nd: Please do Lesson 4-22 and pg. 249-250 from the workbook. You will be doing some more practice with two-step word problems.  I introduced this in class today, but they are not independent with it yet, so they will need some more guidance.

3rd: Please do Lesson 4-13 and pg. 287-290 from the workbook.  You may shorten the workbook pages by picking and choosing problems as you see fit.  I wasn’t sure how long those pages would take, so just shorten as needed!

4th: Please finish the Unit 5 test.  I usually don’t like to send tests home to finish because I like to be available to answer questions, but it just didn’t work well with the next unit to start that at home.  You are welcome to explain questions and help them understand what is being asked, but they need to do the work themselves.  Please don’t correct any mistakes they make.  If there are any questions you can’t answer, please feel free to text me at 231-750-3140.  I will likely see a text before an email! I do have some errands to run in the morning so I might be driving, but I’ll get back to you as soon as I can!

5th: Please finish Lesson 5-4.  Finish pg. 202, and do pg. 203 from the workbook.  You may skip pg. 204.

March 18, 2021

Kdg: Please start Lesson 4-8.  Do Activity 1-2 in the lesson and pg. 219-220 from the workbook.

1st: Please do Lesson 6-9 and pg. 267-268 from the workbook.

2nd: Please start Lesson 4-20 and do pg. 243-244 from the workbook.  The workbook page is all mixed word problems.  For the comparison problems (see the teacher’s manual for a list of what type of problem each question is), have your child draw comparison bars.  For the other problems, they can draw a math mountain.  If you need a reminder about comparison bars, you can go back to the previous couple of lessons to see how they are taught.  When I talk about comparison bars, I always start by putting the initial of the two things we’re comparing alongside the boxes (whoever/whatever has more goes on top).  Then look at the numbers in the problem and put them in the right place.  I say that the boxes are the numbers that the person/thing has and the circle is the difference between them.  Key words to look for to signal that the number belongs in the circle is “more” and “fewer.”  Then we relate the comparison bars to a math mountain (top box is the top of the math mountain and the bottom row is the bottom numbers on the math mountain) to figure out how to solve for the missing number.

3rd: Please start Lesson 4-12.  Do pg. 281-284 from the workbook (activity 1-2 in the lesson).

4th: Please finish pg. 244-246 from the workbook to finish the Unit 5 review.  We will be starting a test in class on Monday.  I put some conversion charts in their folders that they are welcome to use on the test.

5th: Please do Lesson 5-3 and pg. 199-200 from the workbook.  You may do evens only on the whole page (you can skip the top of pg. 199 and number 1, but number 9 on pg. 200 would be good to at least discuss together).

March 15, 2021

Here is your home day work for Tuesday:

*Kdg/1st should start with calendar time. The 2nd-5th graders may skip the fact practice in Freckle today! They have some additional work to do on their hundred chart projects (see info for each individual class) so, to make time for that, they may skip doing the fact practice today (please still have them do their warm up).

Kdg: Please do pg. 213-214 from Lesson 4-5.  You may skip the lesson activities for this lesson.  Instead, work on partners of ten by playing “Go Fish Tens.” I have not introduced this game in class yet, so this will be new.  The game is played just like regular “Go Fish,” but instead of making matching pairs, you have to make a pair that adds up to ten.  Start by taking out all of the tens and face cards in the deck. Then deal 5 cards to each player and put the rest in a pile in the middle.  On each player’s turn, they ask for a number that goes with a number in their hand to make a total of ten.  For example, if I had a 6 in my hand, I would ask for a 4.  The rest of the game is played like the traditional “Go Fish” game.  I’m guessing you’re familiar with the game, so I won’t explain more here, but feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions!

1st: Please finish Lesson 6-7.  Today in class we reviewed comparison bars and started pg. 263-264 from the workbook.  Please go through the rest of that page with them.  Then, see if they can do the problems on the Homework 6-7 worksheet independently (you may help as needed). Key words to look for to signal that the number belongs in the circle is “more” and “fewer.” Please also have your child say two different ways of comparing the information using the words more and fewer when they’re done with each problem.  For example, if we were comparing 7 lions to 3 bears, we would say 1)”there are 4 more lions than bears” and 2)”there are 4 fewer bears than lions.”

2nd: Please do Lesson 4-18 and pg. 239-240 from the workbook.  Instead of writing an equation as it says in the directions for the workbook page, have them write a math mountain to show where the missing number is.  They may use any method to solve for the missing number.  In class, we have been working on using a “ladder method” to count up, so they may use that, but they may be more comfortable/independent with using subtraction.  Please also help your child finish their clues for their hundred chart project.  The plan is to switch these with their classmate on Wednesday to solve each other’s clues and mystery picture. I have tried to check over them, but if you could also just help them make sure that their clues are correct and they’re not missing/duplicating any numbers, that would be great!

3rd: Please do Lesson 4-10 and pg. 273-274 from the workbook.  I sent home a clock to use to help them if that is more helpful than the number line on the worksheet.  Please make sure those come back to school on Wednesday.  Please also help your child finish their clues for their hundred chart project.  The third graders are just working on typing their clues so that we can print more than one copy of their clues.  I have tried to check over their written work, but if you could double check that their final draft is correct and not missing/duplicating any numbers, that would be great! The plan is to switch these with their classmates (and maybe even some friends in other grades) to solve on Wednesday/Thursday.  You may help with the typing if needed.  I have encouraged them to write their clues in a numbered list with at least one space between each line.  Please have them type it in a Google doc and then share it with me when they are done (kboerkoel@zcs.org).

4th: Please do Lesson 5-8 and pg. 237-238 from the workbook.  Please also help your child finish their clues for their hundred chart project.  The fourth graders are just working on typing their clues so that we can print more than one copy of their clues.

5th: Please finish Lesson 5-1.  Please do at least 2 of the 4 remaining problems on pg. 194, and pg. 195-196 (may do odds only).  Please also help your child finish their clues for their hundred chart project.  Most of the fifth graders are just working on typing their clues so that we can print more than one copy of their clues.  I have tried to check over their written work (I have not been able to check Ella or Gavin’s work as they are finishing up writing their “first draft”), but if you could double check that their final draft is correct and not missing/duplicating any numbers, that would be great!

March 8, 2021

Kdg: Please do Lesson 4-3 and pg. 205-206 from the workbook.  Use the base ten blocks that I sent home to do Activity 1 (please send blocks back to school on Wednesday). You can skip Activity 2.

1st: Please do Lesson 6-5 and pg. 257-258 from the workbook.  I sent home the stair steps you will need again, so please send these back to school again on Wednesday.

2nd: Please do Lesson 4-15 and pg. 233-234 from the workbook.  See Activity 2 in the teacher’s manual for directions on how to do the workbook page.  You may skip Activity 1 in the lesson.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 4-8 and do pg. 269-270. We started this today, but they could use a little more practice with telling time as minutes before and after an hour.

4th: Please finish Lesson 5-5.  We discussed liquid volume and did pg. 227 and part of 228 in class today.  You will discuss units of weight (Activity 1) and do pg. 225-226.  There are also a couple of problems left on pg. 228 that involve measuring weight so please do those as well.

5th: Please finish pg. 187-188 to finish the Unit 4 Review.  We will be starting the test on Wednesday.

March 4, 2021

Kdg: Please do Lesson 4-2 and pg. 201-202 from the workbook.  You may skip Activity 1, but please do Activity 2.  I sent home the number tiles you will need to use, so please send those back to school on Monday.

1st: Please do Lesson 6-3 and pg. 253-254 from the workbook.  Please do Activity 1 in the lesson.  It says to have 2 students jump a number of times, but you can have a sibling or parent do the second set of jumps.  I also sent home the stair steps you will need to use to compare the number of jumps.  Please send those back to school on Monday.

2nd: Please do Lesson 4-13 and pg. 229-230 from the workbook.  On pg. 229, you can just have them write 4 problems instead of 8 as the directions say.  The other 4 problems just change where the = sign is in the equation, and I have found that this makes it more confusing for students.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 4-7.  We have been working on time concepts this week.  Please finish pg. 267-268 from the workbook.  One of the more difficult concepts we have worked on this week is the language of “quarter after, half past, and quarter to” the hour.  Please do the Spin and Write time activity that I sent home to practice this concept some more.  There are directions on the paper and I also included a paperclip to use for a spinner.

4th: Please do Lesson 5-4 and pg. 223-224 from the workbook.  Be sure to discuss the ideas in the lesson activities.  Please use the paper I sent home to make a yard measuring tape and return this back to school on Monday.

5th: Please do pg. 185-186 of the Unit 4 Review.  We will be starting the test on Wednesday next week.

March 1, 2021

Kdg: Please finish the Unit 3 Review pages that were sent home.  We will be taking a test on Wednesday.

1st: Please do Lesson 6-1 and pg. 247-250 from the workbook.

2nd: Please finish Lesson 4-9 by doing pg. 217-218 from the workbook.  This should be mostly review, but I wanted to make sure that they know what to do when there are zeros in the subtraction problem.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 4-6 and do pg. 258-260 from the workbook.  We started the lesson and discussed fractions of inches in class today. We did pg. 258, but the kids were still struggling with this concept a bit, so you may need to do some review. For pg. 259-260, you will need to discuss line plots (new concept).  When they make their own line plot on pg. 260, you can have them use the numbers that are on the answer key for that page in the teacher’s manual as their data to plot.  You can just go ahead and write those numbers in the box at the top of the page for them, and then they can put the points on the line.  I sent home rulers for them to use, so please make sure these come back to school on Wednesday.

4th: Please do Lesson 5-2 and pg. 215-218 (may skip pg. 216 if they want) from the workbook.  I sent home a metric conversion chart that they can use for the lesson.  Please make sure this gets sent back to school on Wednesday too.

5th: Please do Lesson 4-12 and pg. 179-180 from the workbook.

February 25, 2021

Kdg: Please do Lesson 3-21 and pg. 185-186 from the workbook.

1st: Please do pg. 241-242 from the workbook to finish the Unit 5 Review.  We will be taking a test on Monday.

2nd: Please do Lesson 4-10 and pg. 219-220 from the workbook.  You are welcome to use real or play money you have at home, but I did not have enough to send home with everyone.

3rd: Please do Lesson 4-5 and pg. 255-256 from the workbook.  Cut out the pieces on pg. 255A and use them to do the activities in Activity 1 (and the workbook pages).

4th: Please start Lesson 5-1.  Use the paper I sent home (cut and tape pieces together) to create a meter measuring tape (please have them put their name on it and send it back to school on Monday).  Then use that to do Activity 1 and pg. 211-212 from the workbook.

5th: Please do Lesson 4-11 and pg. 177-178 from the workbook.  Do #1-8 all, #9-20 odds only, and #21-26 all.

February 22, 2021

Kdg: Please do Lesson 3-19 and pg. 181-182 from the workbook.  For Activity 1, find some objects around the house to arrange into a group of ten and some extra “ones” to make different teen numbers.  I would love to see a picture of at least one number you made! You can text a picture to me at 231-750-3140 or email it to me at kboerkoel@zcs.org.  You may skip Activity 2.

1st: Please do Lesson 5-11 and pg. 235-236 from the workbook.

2nd: Please do Lesson 4-7 and pg. 213-214 from the workbook.  I sent home base ten blocks (please send back to school on Wednesday) with the two hundreds that you would need to represent the subtracting from 200 problems.  They are still welcome to use the base ten blocks, or any method they choose, but we are trying to encourage them to move toward the traditional “ungrouping” method of subtraction.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 4-3.  Today in class, we worked on locating fractions less than one on a number line.  You will pick up on workbook pg. 250 by introducing fractions greater than one whole.  This will be a new concept for them, so they will need some introductory instruction.  Then introduce mixed numbers (bottom of pg. 250). Also complete pg. 251-252 from the workbook.

4th: Please finish the Unit 4 Review pages.  We will be taking the test on Wednesday.

5th: Please finish Lesson 4-8.  Do pg. 169-170 from the workbook to review the properties of multiplication.  By the end of the lesson, they should have an idea of what each property means by memory.

February 18, 2021

*If students still have any warm ups in their folders from last week, they are optional if they want the extra Dojo point.

Kdg: Please do Lesson 3-18 and pg. 179-180 from the workbook.  You may skip Activity 1 in the lesson.  Instead, please use the teen number cards I sent home to play the memory game again (see blog from last week for directions if needed).  As you are playing, be sure she practices saying the teen numbers out loud.  Please return these cards to school again on Monday.

1st: Please do Lesson 5-9.  Do Activity 1 in the lesson with workbook pg. 230 instead of 231 (so you may leave pg. 231 blank).  I want them to get used to using a hundred chart with numbers in horizontal rows instead of vertical, which is why I would like them to use pg. 230 instead of pg. 231.  Then use the completed hundred chart to do pg. 232.

2nd: Please do Lesson 4-6 and pg. 211-212 from the workbook.  You can shorten pg. 211 if needed, but I would like them to do at least 8 problems on the page.  They may use any method they choose to solve the problems.  I did send base ten blocks home if those are still necessary, but I would like them to start moving away from using those.

3rd: Please do Lesson 4-2 and pg. 247-248 from the workbook.

4th: Please do Lesson 4-12 and pg. 197-198.

5th: Please do Lesson 4-8 and pg. 167-168 from the workbook.  Discuss multiplying with decimals greater than one.  I tell students to multiply as usual just ignoring the decimal point, then put their decimal point in when they’re done by counting the number of decimal places in the problem and matching that in the answer.  On pg. 167, they can choose at least 8 problems to do instead of doing the whole page.  Do all of pg. 168.

February 11, 2021

Here is your home day work for Tuesday, February 16 (or whenever you want to do it over the long weekend!):

Kdg: Please do the following activities to practice teen numbers: 1) Build some teen numbers with the base ten blocks that I sent home. 2) Do the worksheet to match the picture of the base ten blocks to the teen number.  3) Play a memory match game with the cards on pg. 169 that I sent home.  Cut out the cards and put the 10+___ cards face down in one pile and the teen number cards face down in another pile.  She will turn over one card from each pile and see if they are a match.  Continue playing like a traditional memory match game.  Please send these cards back to school in an envelope or baggie with your child’s name on it. I also sent home a booklet we worked on for the 100th day of school.  We did not have enough time to finish it so if you would like to work on it over the long weekend, that would be great.  I told the kids it was not required, but encouraged! 🙂

1st: Please do Lesson 5-7.  You may skip Activity 1 in the lesson.  Just discuss using 10-groups to count and do pg. 225-226 from the workbook and the Homework/Remembering worksheet. I also sent home a booklet we worked on for the 100th day of school.  We did not have enough time to finish it so if you would like to work on it over the long weekend, that would be great.  I told the kids it was not required, but encouraged! 🙂

2nd: Please do Lesson 4-5 and pg. 209-210 from the workbook. Explain and practice the expanded method on pg. 209, but we will mostly use the traditional ungrouping method so they do not need to master it. Use the ungrouping method to do pg. 210. I also sent home a 100 chart mystery picture that we started on the 100th day of school. We did not have time to finish it, so if they want to work on it over the long weekend, that would be great! I told the kids it was not required, but encouraged! 🙂

3rd: Please start Lesson 4-1 and do pg. 243-244 from the workbook. Do Activity 1 in the lesson with the bottom rectangle on pg. 243A (please send these pieces back to school in a baggie or envelope with your child’s name on it). On pg. 244, you don’t have to cut out the pieces from pg. 243A to do this page, just use the picture on the worksheet.  I also sent home a 100 chart mystery picture that we started on the 100th day of school. We did not have time to finish it, so if they want to work on it over the long weekend, that would be great! I told the kids it was not required, but encouraged! 🙂

4th: Please finish Lesson 4-10 and do pg. 193-194 from the workbook.

5th: Please start Lesson 4-7 and do pg. 161-163 (don’t do pg. 164) from the workbook (and Activity 1 in the lesson).   I also sent home a 100 chart mystery picture that we started on the 100th day of school. We did not have time to finish it, so if they want to work on it over the long weekend, that would be great! I told the kids it was not required, but encouraged! 🙂

Enjoy your long weekend!

*Some students (2nd-5th) still have their warm up from Friday in their folders.  Completing this is optional.  If they want the Dojo point, they are welcome to complete it, otherwise it can be recycled.

Kdg: Please do Lesson 3-14 and pg. 167-168 from the workbook.  We will be celebrating the 100th day of school on Wednesday! I would like the kindergarten and first grade students to bring in a collection of 100 items that we can count together.  So, please have them come up with an item you have around the house that they could bring in 100 of.  Some examples might be 100 noodles, pennies, small toys, etc.  They will be sent home again on Wednesday.

1st: Please do Lesson 5-6 and pg. 221-22 from the workbook.  Students will be adding 3 addends in this lesson, which is a new concept.  Encourage them to look for partners of 10 to help them solve the problem easily.

2nd: Please finish Lesson 4-3 and pg. 203-204 from the workbook.  We started this in class today and I showed them how to ungroup or trade 100 in for 9 tens and 10 ones.  I sent home some base ten blocks so that they can use these to help solve the problems.  In addition to physically trading the base ten blocks, please also show them how to write this numerically.

3rd: Please do pg. 235-238 to review Unit 3.  We will be starting the unit test in class on Wednesday (finishing Thursday).

4th: Please do Lesson 4-8 and pg. 183-186 from the workbook.  On pg. 185, be sure they write one equation that shows both steps of the problem.  On pg. 186, you may just discuss the answer instead of writing it.

5th: Please start Lesson 4-6 and do pg. 157-158 from the workbook.  Be sure to discuss the main points in Activity 1 in the teacher’s manual!

February 4, 2021

Here is your home day work for Friday (unless we have a snow day!):

Kdg: Please do Lesson 3-14 and pg. 167-168 from the workbook.

1st: Please do Lesson 5-5 and pg. 219-220 from the workbook.  Be sure to do some of the story problems in Activity 2 in the teacher’s manual.

2nd: Please practice counting money by doing the packet that I sent home.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 3-17.  We did the beginning of the lesson and pg. 227 in class today.  Please discuss reasonable answers and do pg. 228.  Please also do the Homework worksheet to practice multi step word problems.  We did some of these in class together today, so I would encourage you to have your child do these as independently as possible.

4th: Please do Lesson 4-7 and pg. 181-182 from the workbook.

5th: Please do Lesson 4-5 and pg. 153 odds and pg. 154 all.

February 1, 2021

Kdg: Please finish Lesson 3-12 by doing pg. 163-164 from the workbook.  We already did the lesson activities in class.

1st: Please finish/review Lesson 5-2.  Please do pg. 214 from the workbook.  In class we focused on how to change the subtraction problem to addition with an unknown addend and then used the “Make-a-Ten” strategy the same way we have been to find the missing addend.  I did not teach the method in Activity 3 yet for using the strategy for subtracting.  Please spend some time teaching this, but if it is too difficult, they can change the problems to addition and solve for the missing partner.  Please also do the Homework 5-2 worksheet using any method for subtraction. The Remembering side is optional!

2nd: Please review Lesson 4-2.  We had a shortened class time today due to MAP testing and we spent the whole time discussing coins, their values, and introducing the dollar.  Both girls are still not confident with money concepts, so please take some time to review this.  Please do pg. 199-200 from the workbook and the Homework 4-2 worksheet.  The Remembering side is optional!

3rd: Please do Lesson 3-16 and pg. 225-226 #1-12 odds only, and #13-19 all.

4th: Please finish Lesson 4-5 by doing pg. 175-176 from the workbook.

5th: Please review Lesson 4-3 by doing the Homework/Remembering worksheet.  Please have them use the Place Value Sections Method (Box Method) for at least problem #1, but they are welcome to use another method if they like another one better.  We have not reviewed any other methods in class yet though.

January 28, 2021

*Some of your kids will still have the warm up from Tuesday in their folder.  I told them that this is optional.  They may do it if they want the extra Dojo point, but they may skip it if they want!  If they choose to skip it, they can just recycle it.

Kdg: Please do pg. 157-158 from Lesson 3-11.  You can just focus on the workbook page and skip the rest of the lesson today.  Be sure to discuss 5-groups!

1st: Please do the Homework/Remembering worksheet for Lesson 5-1 to review the Make-a-Ten strategy. Please also cut out and use the purple Make-a-Ten cards that I sent home.  See Lesson 5-1 for directions on how to use these.

2nd: Please do Lesson 4-1 and pg. 195-196 from the workbook.  Be sure to review the coins we have learned (penny, nickel, dime) and introduce quarters.  A great idea would be to use actual coins that you have around the house and practice counting them.

3rd: Please do Lesson 3-14 and pg. 221-222 from the workbook.

4th: Please do Lesson 4-4 and pg. 171-172 from the workbook.

5th: Please do Lesson 4-2 and pg. 145-146 from the workbook.

January 25, 2021

Kdg: Please finish Lesson 3-10.  We did Activity 1 in class today so you will be doing Activity 2 and pg. 153-154 from the workbook.

1st: Please finish Lesson 5-1.  We practiced the Make-a-Ten strategy for teen totals today and did pg. 207 from the workbook.  They are not quite confident on using the Make-a-Ten strategy yet, so please have them cut out and practice with the purple Make-a-Ten cards.  Be sure to refer to the lesson for how this strategy works and how the pictures are drawn.  Please send these cards back to school in a baggie with your child’s name on it.  Please also do pg. 208 from the workbook.

2nd: Please finish pg. 183-186 to review Unit 3.  We will be taking a test in class on Wednesday.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 3-12.  We started the lesson (and did pg. 215-216) and discussed subtracting across zeros in class today.  Please have them do pg. 217-218 from the workbook.  On pg. 217, please have them draw proof drawing for #7-10 as directed, but they may skip #15.

4th: Please finish Lesson 4-2.  Pick up at Activity 3 and do pg. 165-166 from the workbook.

5th: Please continue working on Lesson 4-1.  We started the lesson in class today and talked about digits shifting over when multiplying by multiples of ten.  The book uses the language of shifting the digits, but I always say that we shift the digits in order to make room for the zeros.  I would like them to look at it more as adding zeros than shifting the digits.  Please do pg. 139 #19-24, and pg. 140-141 (all).

Kdg: Please do Lesson 3-9.  Use the shapes that were sent home to do the lesson activities (see teacher’s manual) and do pg. 147-150 from the workbook.

1st: Please do Lesson 4-18 and pg. 191-192 from the workbook.  We already took the test from this unit, but it will be good to review.

2nd: Please do Lesson 3-9 and pg. 179-180 from the workbook.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 3-10.  We started the lesson in class so you will just need to finish pg. 209-210 from the workbook.

5th: Please do Lesson 3-14 and pg. 123-124 from the workbook.  We already took the test on this unit this week, but it will be good to review.

January 14, 2021

Here is your home day work for Friday AND Tuesday:

*Kdg/1st should start with calendar time and 2nd-5th should start with their daily warm up and at least one session of fact practice in Freckle. The warm up for day 1 is OPTIONAL for an additional Dojo point!

Kdg:

  • Friday: Please do Lesson 3-7 and pg. 143-144 from the workbook.  As she practices writing the numbers 15-16 on pg. 144, it would be helpful to practice building those numbers using the ten strip and extra ones.  Teen numbers have been challenging so far, so any additional practice would be beneficial!
  • Tuesday: Please do Lesson 3-8 and pg. 145-146 from the workbook.  Be sure to do the lesson activities using the number tiles materials.

1st:

  • Friday: Please do Lesson 4-16 and pg. 187-188 from the workbook. For the sandwich game on pg. 187, instead of using secret code cards, use 2 dice to make the 2-digit numbers to compare.
  • Tuesday: Please do pg. 189-190 from Lesson 4-17 (you may skip the lesson activity).  On pg. 190, please have your child circle any new groups of ten that are made when adding.  The idea is to get them to visualize how adding ones can make a new group of ten that will need to be added to the number in the tens place.

2nd:

  • Friday: Please do Lesson 3-6 and pg. 163-165 from the workbook.  Do Activity 1 in the lesson to use pg. 161 to make a meter measuring tape to use for the lesson (please put your child’s name on the back and return this to school on Wednesday).  On pg. 164-165, instead of measuring the height of their classmates, they can measure the height of everyone in your family and use that data to fill out the charts and line plots.  You may skip pg. 166.
  • Tuesday: Please start Lesson 3-7 by doing pg. 169-170 from the workbook.  I sent home a ruler to use for measuring inches instead of making a paper one as described in Activity 1.

3rd:

  • Friday: Please do Lesson 3-8 and pg. 205-206 from the workbook.  They do not need to draw a proof drawing for EVERY problem if they are doing well without it.  Please have them draw a proof drawing for at least the first two problems. They can do more if needed.
  • Tuesday: Please do Lesson 3-9 and pg. 207 (odds) and pg. 208 (all).

4th: Please finish the Unit 3 review pages by Wednesday.  You can decide how you want to break up the work over both days.  We will be starting the test on Wednesday.

5th: Please finish the Unit 3 review pages by Wednesday.  You can decide how you want to break up the work over both days.  We will be starting the test on Wednesday.

January 11, 2021

Kdg: Please finish Lesson 3-5.  We did the lesson activity with building teen numbers in class today, but this would be a good thing to practice again at home.  I sent home the materials, so please do Activity 1 with a few different teen numbers.  Also do pg. 137-138 from the workbook.

1st: Please do Lesson 4-14 and pg. 183-184 from the workbook.

2nd: Please do Lesson 3-4 and pg. 151-152 from the workbook.  I sent home a ruler to use so please send this back to school on Wednesday.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 3-6.  We reviewed rounding to the nearest hundred and went over rounding to the nearest ten today.  Please finish pg. 198 (all), pg. 199 (evens), and pg. 200 (all).

4th: Please do Lesson 3-11 and pg. 147-148 from the workbook.

5th: Please do Lesson 3-13 and pg. 121-122 from the workbook.  You may use your judgement to shorten the assignment as necessary.

January 6, 2021

Here is your home day work for Friday: (note: the plans on the Week at a Glance are not accurate anymore due to me being out of school on Wednesday)

Kdg: Please finish Lesson 3-4. We already did the lesson activities, but please do pg. 131-132 from the workbook.  Continue working on number recognition 1-20.  We have also been practicing counting on from ten (to count teen numbers) and this has been difficult, so this would be a good thing to continue practicing at home.

1st: Please review Lesson 4-12.  I introduced the < and > signs in class and we practiced comparing 2-digit numbers.  Please do the Homework and Remembering worksheet for some additional practice.  The answer key can be found at the end of Lesson 4-12 in the teacher’s manual or in the shared Google folder.

2nd: Please finish Lesson 3-3 by finishing pg. 149-150 from the workbook.  I sent home rulers to use in case you don’t have one at home, so please send these back to school on Monday.

3rd: Please do Lesson 3-5.  Discuss rounding to the nearest hundred.  I tell the kids to find the number in the hundreds place, then look at the number just to it’s right.  If the next number is 0-4 the number in the hundreds place stays the same.  If it’s 5-9, the number in the hundreds place goes up.  Then the rest of the numbers become zeros.  Do pg. 195-196 from the workbook.

4th: Please do Lesson 3-10 and pg. 145-146 from the workbook.  You may shorten the assignment if needed by choosing one problem on each side of the worksheet to skip.

5th: Please start Lesson 3-12 by doing the Homework worksheet. We have not done this lesson in class yet, but I think they can handle the Homework worksheet.  Just be sure to discuss the difference between multiplying fractions and dividing them, and make sure they pay attention to the symbol in each problem (of the top section).  The answer key can be found at the end of Lesson 3-12 in the teacher’s manual or in the shared Google folder.

January 4, 2021

Kdg: Please do Lesson 3-3.  Do Activity 1 in the lesson (I sent home the number tiles to use for this activity- please send them back on Wednesday).  Please also do pg. 129-130.  Continue practicing number recognition to 20.  We are beginning to work on teen numbers!

1st: Please finish the last few questions on pg. 170 (from Lesson 4-9).  We worked on it in class today but ran out of time to finish and I want to make sure they understand the concept.  Please have them circle a group of ten ones if they make a new ten when adding the ones.  Please also do Lesson 4-10 (you may skip Activity 3 in the lesson) and do pg. 171-172.

2nd: Please finish Lesson 3-2.  We started in class today and discussed squares and rectangles (you may want to review these definitions together!). Please do Activity 3 in the lesson and pg. 147-148 from the workbook.

3rd: Please do Lesson 3-3 and pg. 191-192 from the workbook.  You may skip Activity 1 in the lesson.

4th: Please do Lesson 3-8.  Discuss Activity 1 and do pg. 141 #1-4 all, #5-13 odds, and pg. 142 all.

5th: Please finish Lesson 3-10.  We discussed pg. 111 and talked about the generalization of dividing fractions by changing to multiplication and flipping the fraction (n/d = n x 1/d = n/d).  Please do Activity 2 and pg. 112 (may shorten to evens only if needed).  Please also discuss Activity 3 and do pg. 113.  On pg. 114, you may just discuss #21-23 (don’t need to write anything down), but please have them do #24-29.

December 17, 2020

Here is your home day work for Friday:

*Kdg-1st graders should start with calendar time (be sure to discuss the year change on New Year’s!) and 2nd-5th graders should start with their daily warm up and at least one session of fact practice in Freckle.

There are no new lessons today! I sent some supplemental Christmas activities for you to do instead. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas! I look forward to seeing your kids again in 2021!

Kdg: Please do the Color by Code worksheets.  One involves recognizing teen numbers.  We are just starting to learn about teen numbers, so this will be a good introduction! The other one is some simple addition facts.  We haven’t practiced this in class a lot, but we have been working on adding/subtracting 1 so I think she can do this with some guidance.

1st: Please do the place value Christmas mystery picture.

2nd: Please do the Christmas shopping money math worksheet.

3rd: Please do the Multiplication mystery picture.

4th-5th: Please do the Reindeer Games logic puzzle (the stapled packet).  Start by going through the directions about how to do a logic puzzle and then complete the puzzle on the back page.  I also sent home another logic puzzle that would be more of a challenge.  This is optional, but might be a fun family activity for you to work on over break!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Kdg: Please do Lesson 3-1 and pg. 121-122 from the workbook.  Be sure to discuss how the pictures show the partners of numbers on pg. 121.

1st: Please finish Lesson 4-6.  Practice doubles facts (especially 6+6 through 9+9).  We talked today about how to use doubles facts to help with doubles +1/-1 but they weren’t quite confident on this yet.  So please do some additional practice with this and then work on doubles +2/-2 and finish pg. 161-162.

2nd: Please start Lesson 3-1.  Introduce centimeters (use the ruler I sent home instead of the paper one mentioned in the lesson) and do Activity 1 in the lesson.  Do pg. 141-142 from the workbook.  We will finish the rest of the lesson in class.

3rd: Please do Lesson 3-1 and pg. 187-188 from the workbook.

4th: Please do Lesson 3-5.  Discuss the similarities and differences of the three division methods we have learned so far (top of pg. 133).  Do odds only on pg. 133-134 using any method of their choice.

5th: Please finish Lesson 3-8.  We started today by doing most of pg. 105.  Please finish pg. 105 and do pg. 106.

December 10, 2020

Kdg: Please do Lesson 2-20 and pg. 111-112 from the workbook.  We have been working on the +1/-1 concept in class, and this might be a good thing to continue reviewing at home!  We will be taking a test on Unit 2 in class on Monday.

1st: Please do Lesson 4-5 and pg. 159-160 from the workbook.  Be sure to read through the lesson for how to teach the “Make-a-Ten” strategy.

2nd: Please finish the Unit 2 Review.  Do pg. 135-136 from the workbook.  Reviewing dimes, nickels, and pennies would also be helpful! We will be taking a test in class on Monday.

3rd: After spending some time in class reviewing for the unit test, I felt that the kids were just not quite ready.  So, I have assigned a practice test of sorts in ThinkCentral for them to do.  They will need to log in to their ThinkCentral account (there is a link in Clever) and then click on the “Things to do” section.  From there, they will see an assignment in their personal math trainer called “Practice Test.” There will be a series of questions that are very similar to what will be on the test.  You are welcome to sit with them while they do this and help them if needed.

4th: Please do Lesson 3-4.  You will be teaching the traditional “digit by digit” method of long division.  I did introduce it briefly to the kids today but they have not had a chance to practice it on their own.  I taught them a way to remember the steps by using the letters for “Dad, Mom, Sister, Brother, Rover (the dog).” D= divide, M= multiply, S=subtract, B= bring down (then go back to divide), R= remainder (if there’s nothing left to bring down).  Please do pg. 129-130 all, and #6-8 on pg. 131.  We will be finishing this in class on Monday, so please don’t have them cross off the whole page. 🙂

5th: Please do the Homework 3-7 worksheet to review adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions.  We discussed the lesson in class today.

3rd: Please do Lesson 2-15 and pg. 171-172 from the workbook.  Practice multiplication facts!

4th: Please start Lesson 3-2 and do pg. 121-122.  See the lesson for how to teach the Place Value Sections Method as this is a new concept.

5th: Please finish Lesson 3-5.  I introduced the concept and started the workbook page in class today.  Please finish pg. 95-96.

Kdg: Please do lesson 2-17 and pg. 105-106 from the workbook.  I sent home pages 101-103 to use to do the lesson activities along with the baggie of shapes we’ve already cut out.  Please add these new pieces to the bag and return them on Monday.

1st: Please do Lesson 4-1 and pg. 145-146 from the workbook.

2nd: Please do Lesson 2-13 and pg. 123-124 from the workbook.

November 30, 2020

Kdg: Please do Lesson 2-15 and pg. 97-98 from the workbook.  Please be sure to do the lesson activities and then use the workbook page to practice writing 10s.  Continue working on number recognition.

1st: Please do Lesson 3-12 and pg. 133-134 (be sure to go through the lesson activities in addition to the workbook page).

2nd: Please finish Lesson 2-11.  We started today by reviewing pennies, dimes, and dollars (recognition of name and value of coins is still tricky so this is a good thing to keep working on at home too) and we started pg. 117.  You will finish pg. 117 and then see the directions in Activity 2 to do pg. 118.  She will choose 2 items off the page she wants to buy and add up the amounts on a piece of scrap paper.  Then write the total amount using the cent sign format and the dollar sign format.  She will do this 5 times.  I sent home some play money to use, so please be sure that comes back to school on Wednesday.

3rd: Please continue working on Lesson 2-11.  We started it today, but writing equations for the two step problems is still tricky so some more practice is needed.  Please do pg. 154 and the Homework 2-11 worksheet.  You may shorten the Homework worksheet to odds only if necessary.

4th: Please do Lesson 2-19 and pg. 103-104 from the workbook.  Practice multiplication facts using flashcards or another way in addition to Freckle.

5th: Please do Lesson 3-2 and pg. 87-88 from the workbook.

November 23, 2020

Here is your home day work for Tuesday:

*Kdg-1st should start with calendar time and 2nd-5th should start with at least one session of fact practice in Freckle.  There are no warm ups this week!

*There are no new lessons to teach for today! I decided to take a break from new material and do some fun Thanksgiving math activities.  See below for details!

Kdg: Please do the Thanksgiving Color by Number worksheet.  Encourage your child to do one number at a time and say the number out loud as she colors it.  This will help with number recognition!

1st: Please do the Pumpkin Number Bonds worksheets.  The total number of seeds is written on the pumpkin and the two seeds on the side are the two partners.  You can relate this to a math mountain by pointing out that the pumpkin is like the total at the top of the math mountain and the seeds are the partners on the bottom.

2nd: Please do the two turkey math worksheets I sent home.  On the “Build a Turkey with Math” worksheet, she will need to cut out the feathers at the bottom of the page and glue them to the correct turkey that shows the total of that math fact.  On the other one, she will need to color the turkey feathers the correct color according to the code at the top of the page.  I would like her to write in the answers to the subtraction problem in each feather before she colors it.

3rd: Please do the Thanksgiving math puzzles.  I explained to the kids how to do these, but they will need to figure out the number that each picture represents.  Each picture will represent the same number.  For example, in the first puzzle, the hat is a 4 because 4+4=8.  They may choose at least 8 of the puzzles to do if they don’t want to do the whole thing.

4th-5th: Please do the Thanksgiving hidden picture.  They had some time to start working on this in class today, but it will probably still take quite a bit of time.  If they are working on it for more than 45 minutes, they may stop where they are.  I told them that if they have some free time during their days off, it would be a great thing to keep working toward finishing, but it’s not required.  Here is a link to the document that includes an answer key (at the end).  It might be a good idea to check their answers to the math problems before they start coloring!

November 19, 2020

Kdg: Please do Lesson 2-13 and pg. 93-94 from the workbook.  You will need to the cut out the triangles on pg. 91 (it might be best if a parent cuts these) and use them to do the lesson activities.  Please add these to the baggy of shapes I sent home and return it to school on Monday.

1st: Please do pg. 125-126 from the workbook.  We went through Lesson 3-9 in class today so you will just need to do the workbook page.  Be sure to have them draw math mountains for the word problems, concentrating on where the missing number is located.  I always ask if we know the total first and then put that at the top.  Then fill in the partners underneath.

2nd: Please do Lesson 2-10 and pg. 111-112 from the workbook.

*3rd-5th: This week I have been working with the kids on how to turn in their work to Google Classroom.  They have all been added to my classroom and know how to access it.  I would like them to practice turning in their home day work today to Google classroom.  I created an assignment for each grade that they should see when they log in to my Google Classroom.  I would like them to take pictures of their completed workbook pages and post them.  Some of them already know how to do this, but I haven’t been able to go over it with all of them yet.  So, please watch this YouTube video with them that shows them how to take a photo, rename it, and post those pictures in the assignment.  When they rename the photo, they should put the page number that it is so I know what I’m looking at. Have them follow the steps in the video to add their pictures to the assignment and then turn it in.  I would still like them to turn in the workbook page on Monday in addition to posting it to Google Classroom.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 2-9 by finishing pg. 147-148 from the workbook.  We started this and went through the lesson in class, but they were still having some difficulty with it so they could use more practice.  Please turn in to Google Classroom (see above).

4th: Please do Lesson 2-18 and pg. 101 (odds only) and pg. 102 (all).  Please turn in to Google Classroom (see above).

5th: Please start Lesson 3-1 and do pg. 83-84 from the workbook.  Please turn in to Google Classroom (see above).

November 16, 2020

Kdg: Please do Lesson 2-11 and pg. 87-88 from the workbook.  Use pg. 87 to tell math stories.  Please also do the hidden 9s picture I sent home.  Keep working on number recognition for numbers 1-10.

1st: Please do Lesson 3-7 and pg. 117-118 from the workbook.  You do not need to do Activity 3 in the lesson.

2nd: Please do Lesson 2-7 and pg. 105-106 from the workbook.  Be sure to see the lesson for how to teach the “Show All Totals” method.  This is a new concept!

3rd: Please do Lesson 2-8 and pg. 135-136 from the workbook.  You may shorten the assignment if necessary.  Have them do all of pg. 135, but they may choose at least 2 of the tables on pg. 136 to do if they don’t have time to do the whole thing.

4th: Please do Lesson 2-15 and pg. 91-92 from the workbook.  They can use any method they want to solve the problems.  You may shorten the assignment to odds/evens only if needed.

5th: Please do pg. 75-76 to review Unit 2.  I decided to push the test back a day to Thursday so we will finish the review (pg. 77-78) in class on Wednesday.

November 12, 2020

Kdg: Please do the 2 worksheets I sent home to practice the numbers 6 and 7.  Keep working on number recognition for numbers 1-10 also!

1st: Please do the Homework 3-4 and Homework 3-5 worksheets to review what we worked on in class this week.

2nd: Please do the 2-4 Reteach worksheet and the Homework 2-5 worksheet to review what we worked on in class this week.

3rd: Please do pg. 133-134 from the workbook for Lesson 2-7.  You do not need to do any of the lesson activities.  Just complete the workbook page.

4th: Please do the Homework/Remembering 2-13 worksheet.  Please have them use the shortcut method to solve the multiplication problems.  We went over this in class today, but you can look it up in Lesson 2-13 if you need a refresher.  It’s basically just the traditional method for solving 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication.  The book does not include it, but I have the kids fill in a zero as a place holder before multiplying by their second digit.  Please have them do their work on a piece of paper and attach that to the worksheet when they turn it in.

5th: Please do pg. 69-70 from Lesson 2-10.  We started some review today and will continue to review on Monday and Tuesday before taking a test on Wednesday.

November 9, 2020

Here is your home day work for Tuesday:

*Some classes will be completing their workbook page online today! We have been practicing this in class so the kids should be able to navigate it pretty well.  To access the workbook, kids will go to my Clever page and log in to ThinkCentral (log in info should be saved).  Then, they will click on the Student Activity Book.  They can just type in the page number in the middle top of the page to navigate to the page they need.  To bring up the boxes to type in, they will click the little book icon next to each section.  They can use the circles and arrows at the bottom to go to the next question.  Please make sure EVERY TIME they click on a new book icon, that they click the box where it says “My Notebook.” This is what saves their work.  If they don’t click on this box, it won’t save anything they did and I can’t access it.  The one issue I haven’t been able to figure out is that the drawing tool doesn’t seem to work.  If there is something they need to circle or draw a picture for, they will just have to do that on the hard copy of the page.  Please email me if you have any questions!  We are working to get used to this now in case we need to go to remote learning!

Kdg: Please do Lesson 2-8 and pg. 81-82 from the workbook.  You will be practicing writing the number 7.  The poem that we use for writing a seven goes like this: “Across the sky and down from heaven; that’s how you make a 7.” Encourage neat writing and making sure the numbers hit the lines correctly.  Also practice number recognition for numbers 1-10.  I end each class by going through some number flashcards until she identifies all of them correctly.

1st: Please do Lesson 3-3 and pg. 101-102 from the workbook.

2nd: Please finish Lesson 2-3 by doing the rest of pg. 93-94 from the workbook.  We started pg. 93 using the online version of the workbook.  You may choose if you want to finish it all online or just do it on the workbook page I sent home.  As noted above, the drawing tool does not work so she will have to do those drawings on the hard copy.  For a little more practice, please also do the Homework 2-3 worksheet (Homework side only- you can skip the Remembering side).

3rd: Please finish Lesson 2-4 and do pg. 121-122 of the workbook online.  I sent a hard copy of the page just in case you need it!

4th: Please finish/review Lesson 2-11.  First, do pg. 82 online.  Then, do the Homework/Remembering 2-11 worksheet to review.

5th: Please finish Lesson 2-8.  Do Activity 2 in the lesson and pg. 66 of the workbook online.  I sent home a hard copy of the workbook page just in case you need it (we already did pg. 65 online).

Kdg: Please do lesson 2-6 and pg. 75-76 from the workbook.

1st: Please do pg. 91-92 to finish reviewing Unit 2.  We will be taking a test on Wednesday.

2nd: Please do Lesson 2-1 and pg. 87-88 from the workbook.  You can skip the lesson activities and just do the workbook page, but you may need to discuss the patterns when writing numbers 101-200.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 2-2.  You will do pg. 112 with the square inch tiles I sent home (please send these back to school on Wednesday) and the odds only on pg. 113-114.

4th: Please do Lesson 2-10.  Do pg. 75-76 all, and pg. 77 evens only.  You do not need to do pg. 78.

5th: Please do Lesson 2-6 and pg. 59-60 from the workbook.  Feel free to shorten the assignment if necessary by skipping some of the problems.  Use your judgement based on the time you’ve spent and the comfort level of your child with the concept.

October 19, 2020

Here is your home day work for Tuesday:

*Kdg/1st should start with calendar time and 2nd-5th should start with at least one session of fact practice in Freckle.  There are no warm ups this week!

**Please note: Please initial each worksheet after you have checked it over (using the answer key) and fixed any mistakes with your child.

Kdg: We took a test on Unit 1 today and I didn’t think we should start Unit 2 until after the break.  I sent home some supplemental activities to do.  First, please finish the circle book.  We practiced by cutting circles, but we have not added the pictures yet.  Please have your child draw a picture for each page.  Please also have them do the dot to dots.  Practice connecting the dots (not numbers) with straight lines, in order.

1st: Please do Lesson 2-12 and pg. 75-76 from the workbook.

2nd: Please do the Homework 1-19 and Practice 1-19 pages I sent home to practice 2-step problems.  We practiced some of these in class today, but they are not ready to do them independently yet so I thought some more practice would be beneficial.  The answer key to the Homework page is at the end of the lesson in the teacher’s manual.  The answer key to the practice page is in the shared Google folder.

3rd: Please do Lesson 1-19 and pg. 93-94 from the workbook.

4th: Please finish Lesson 2-4.  We started it today and learned how to use the “box method” to multiply one digit by two digit numbers.  Please finish pg. 62 through #15 (skip #16-18).  Have them use some scrap paper or a white board to draw the boxes.  Then please do pg. 63-64 odds only, also using the box method.

5th: Please do Lesson 2-1 and pg. 47-48 from the workbook.  Be sure to discuss the lesson activities as this is new material.

Enjoy your break!!

October 15, 2020

Kdg: Please do Lesson 1-18 and pg. 51-52 from the workbook.  Be sure to go through all of the lesson activities!

1st: Please do Lesson 2-11 and pg. 73-74 from the workbook.

2nd: Please do Lesson 1-18 and pg. 63-64 from the workbook.  This lesson is about more complex comparison problems so it’s important that they follow the steps we’ve been practicing for writing comparison bars. 1.) Figure out who/what has more and put the initials of the names next to the top and bottom boxes. 2.) Fill in the numbers they know.  The boxes are always how much the person/thing already has and the circle is the difference between the two. 3.) Figure out how to solve for the missing number.  Draw a math mountain if needed.

3rd: Please do Activity 2 only from Lesson 1-17 and pg. 79-80 from the workbook.  Be sure to have your child write an equation and answer with a label for each question.  This has been tricky for them so they may need some guidance!  The answer key for those pages are at the end of the respective lessons in the teacher’s manual or in the shared Google folder.

4th: Please do the Remembering 2-2 and 2-3 worksheets that I sent home.  I wanted to spend some time reviewing some of the previous concepts before moving on to the next lesson, so there is no new teaching you have to do.  I would suggest having your child do the worksheets on their own as much as possible, and then going back over it together to check the answers.

5th: We started the Unit 1 test today but did not quite finish it, so I don’t want to move on to the next unit yet.  Please have your child do pg. 35-36 from the workbook as one final review practice.  This is supposed to be a quiz, but I will not be taking a grade on it so you can help them as needed.  The answer key for that page is at the end of Lesson 1-13 in the teacher’s manual.

October 12, 2020

Kdg: Please do Lesson 1-17 and pg. 49-50 from the workbook.  Be sure to have your child write their numbers neatly and fix any mistakes they see on pg. 50.  You may skip Activity 1 in the lesson.  Please also do the final picture scene for the number 10!

1st: Please do Lesson 2-8 and pg. 65-66 from the workbook.  You only need to do Activity 2 in the lesson as we already did Activity 1 in class.

2nd: Please start Lesson 1-17 by doing Activity 1-2 only and pg. 59-60 from the workbook.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 1-15 by doing pg. 73-74 from the workbook.  Be sure to discuss the different properties, but I don’t expect the kids to have them memorized.  They can use the chart at the top of the page to answer the questions on pg. 73.

4th: Please do Lesson 2-1 and pg. 53-54 from the workbook.  You are starting a new unit with a brand new concept, so be sure to go through parts of the lesson activities.

5th: Please do Lesson 1-13 and pg. 33-34 from the workbook.

October 8, 2020

Kdg: Please do Lesson 1-15 and pg. 45-46 from the workbook.  Please also do a picture scene for number 9 (just like the others you have done).  We are almost done with these pictures and I’m looking forward to putting them all together into a book for each student!

1st: Please do Lesson 2-6 and pg. 57-58 from the workbook.  Be sure to use the counting on strategy that is described in the lesson to do the problems!

2nd: Please review Lesson 1-15 by doing the Homework/Remembering worksheet.  The answer key for the Homework/Remembering worksheet is at the end of the lesson or in the shared Google folder. We have been working on using comparison bars to solve comparison problems.  These are described in the lesson, but I just wanted to give you some of the language I have been using.  After they draw the bars, I always ask them to figure out who/what has more and put the initial for that name next to the top box and the other initial next to the bottom box.  Then we look at the numbers the problem gives us and put them into the correct box.  I always say that the boxes are the numbers that the people (or whatever else you’re comparing) already have and the circle is the difference between them.  Then we relate it to a math mountain (top box is the total at the top of the mountain and the bottom box and circle are the partners at the bottom of the mountain) and decide if we’re missing a total or a partner.  Then we figure out how to solve for the missing number.  Make sure they include a label with their answer!

3rd: Please do Lesson 1-14 and pg. 67-68 from the workbook. Continue practicing multiplication facts of 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 9s, and 10s.

4th: Please finish the Unit 1 Review to prepare for a test on Monday.  We started in class today, but you will need to do pg. 45-48.

5th: Please do Lesson 1-12 and pg. 31-32 from the workbook.

October 5, 2020

Kdg: Please do Lesson 1-13 and pg. 39-40 from the workbook.  Please encourage your child to be sure to write their 3s neatly on pg. 40.  We learned a poem today to help them think about writing a 3: “Around a tree, around a tree, that’s how to make a three.” I am also encouraging them to stop and try again on any messy numbers.  We really want to encourage neat writing as we work on developing fine motor skills! You do not need to do Activity 1 in the lesson.  Please also do a picture scene for the number 8, just like the other ones they have done.  Have them choose a new scene/place and draw at least 3 groups of 8 objects that would be in that scene.

1st: Please do Lesson 2-3 and pg. 47-48 from the workbook.  Please be sure to discuss the points in the lesson activities.

2nd: Please do the Homework/Remembering 1-13 worksheet to review word problems.  Just like Friday, encourage them to think about if they are missing a partner or total and set up a math mountain or equation accordingly.  The answer key for the Homework/Remembering pages are at the end of the lesson in the teacher’s manual or in the shared Google drive.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 1-12 by doing pg. 61-62 from the workbook.  We started the lesson today by learning how to count by 4s by singing them to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” See if your child can sing it to you (and the 3s to “Jingle Bells”)! I also sent home what the book refers to as strategy cards. See Lesson 1-13, Activity 2 for how to introduce these to your child.  You don’t have to do them all at once, but have your child cut these apart and keep them at home to practice them periodically.

4th: Please do Lesson 1-14 and pg. 39-40 from the workbook.

5th: Please do the Homework/Remembering 1-10 worksheet. The answer key for the Homework/Remembering pages are at the end of the lesson in the teacher’s manual or in the shared Google drive.

October 1, 2020

Kdg: Please do Lesson 1-11 and pg. 33-34 from the workbook.  I sent home the square tiles you will need (please send back to school on Monday) for the lesson activities.  Please also do a picture scene for the number 7.  This will be done the same way as the other ones we have done.  They should try to choose a new scene (or place) that they haven’t done yet and include at least 3 groups of 7 objects in their picture.  I sent home a white piece of paper for this.  Be sure to have them write a number 7 somewhere on the page.

1st: Please do Lesson 2-1 and pg. 43-44 from the workbook.

2nd: Please do Lesson 1-12 and pg. 43-44 from the workbook.  As they are doing the drawings for the problems, please have them write an equation with a box for the missing number in the correct place, or they may draw a math mountain.  We always talk about if we are missing a total or a partner to decide where the missing number goes.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 1-11.  Do pg. 55-56 from the workbook.  We already did the lesson activities in class today, but they may need some more practice with the Distributive Property.  I sent home the square tiles we used in class today in case you want to use those to review the lesson activities. Please send these back to school on Monday.

4th: Please do Lesson 1-12 and pg. 33-34 from the workbook.

5th: Please finish Lesson 1-9 and do pg. 25-26 from the workbook.  We spent some time reviewing the fraction concepts we have worked on so far and how to put them all together to add and subtract mixed numbers.  We also went over the two methods it discusses in the lesson, but I encouraged the kids to use “Abby’s method” as they practice.  You may need to review this a little with your child, but they will mostly just do the workbook page for the lesson.

September 28, 2020

Kdg: Please help your child do the squares and rectangles books I sent home.  They should fill in the answers or trace anything that needs to be traced.  For the rectangles book, the answers are: Pg. 1- 4 straight sides and 4 corners; Pg. 3- Rectangles are closed and never open. The other directions in both books are pretty straightforward.  You can help them with spelling, but have them do as much of the writing as possible! They may add color to the pages if they want to, but it’s not required.

1st: Please do Lesson 1-9 and pg. 31-32 from the workbook.

2nd: Please do lesson 1-10 and pg. 39-40 from the workbook.

3rd:  Please do Lesson 1-10 and pg. 49-52 from the workbook (parts of these pages are just for discussion).  This lesson works on multiplying by 3.  Here is a video to watch that helps the kids put the 3s count-bys to a song! Please watch the video and help your child learn their 3s count-bys this way.

4th: Please do Lesson 1-10 and pg. 29-30 from the workbook.

5th: Please do lesson 1-8 and pg. 23-24 #1-3 all, 4-21 evens, 22-25 all.

September 24, 2020

Kdg: Please do Lesson 1-9 and pg. 27-28 from the workbook.  Be sure to do the activity in the lesson introducing comparing numbers.  I sent home the “comparing mat” from pg. 25 in the workbook and the number tiles and squares you will need.  Please send all of those materials back to school on Monday.

1st: Please do Lesson 1-8.  Use pg. 29-30 (and the teacher’s edition) to discuss the lesson points.  Partners of 10 are very important to know, so please spend some time practicing these! Please also do the “Deal out a 10” worksheet.  You will need a deck of cards (without the face cards) to do the activity.  If they draw a number they have already used, please have them draw again to limit the number of repeated combinations!

2nd: Please do Lesson 1-8 and pg. 29-30 from the workbook.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 1-7 and do Lesson 1-8.  For lesson 1-7, there are just a few problems left on pg. 37 (they can skip pg. 38).  Technology ran a little long today so we were unable to finish and the kids haven’t quite mastered the concept yet, so please finish that up before doing Lesson 1-8.  For Lesson 1-8, use pg. 41-42 from the workbook to teach the fingers trick when multiplying by 9.  Also do the Practice 1-8 worksheet that I sent home.  You can find the answer key here.  Be sure to have your child write the equations with variables!  Keep practicing 2s, 5s, and now 10s multiplication facts (can also add in 9s).  I also sent a multiplication table home that they can keep at home or in their folder to use on home days.  I’m finding that the kids are struggling with finding missing numbers (even ones like 10 x n = 60) so you can have them use the multiplication table to help.

4th: Please finish Lesson 1-8.  We started the lesson and workbook page today, but did not finish.  Please pick up where we left off on pg. 21-22 (be sure to familiarize yourself with the lesson to see how I taught it).

5th: Please do the Homework/Remembering 1-6 worksheet to review Lesson 1-6.  The answer key is at the end of the lesson in the teacher’s manual or in the shared Google folder.

September 21, 2020

Here is your home day work for Tuesday:

*Kdg/1st should start with calendar time and 2nd-5th should start with Freckle fact practice and their daily warm up.

Kdg: Please do Lesson 1-7.  You do not need to follow the lesson word for word in the teacher’s manual, but introduce adding and subtracting using the square tiles like it says to do.  I sent those home so be sure to return them on Wednesday.  Please also do pg. 19-20 from the workbook.

1st: Please do Lesson 1-6 and pg. 25-26 from the workbook.  I sent home the stair steps you will need for the lesson activities so be sure to return those on Wednesday.

2nd: Please finish Lesson 1-6 by doing pg. 23-26 from the workbook.  I introduced even and odd numbers in class today by reading a story called “Even Steven and Odd Todd.”

3rd: Please do Lesson 1-6.  You will be introducing the multiplication table (called a “target” in the book).  Do pg. 31-32 from the workbook.  Start practicing some multiplication facts at home too! So far, we have learned how to multiply by 5s and 2s so you should at least be practicing these! The best way to do this, I believe, is just to use some flashcards.  Take out the ones that have a 5 or 2 in them and go through those.  They can also practice counting by 5s and 2s, but these are ones they will want to have memorized eventually so flashcards help with that!

4th: Please do Lesson 1-6.  The methods of addition in the lesson will be mostly review, but use pg. 17 from the workbook to go over this briefly.  They can choose any method they want to solve the problems (I usually use the New Groups Above method in class).  Do pg. 17-18 from the workbook.

5th: Please do Lesson 1-5 and pg. 15-16 from the workbook.

September 17, 2020

Here is your home day work for Friday:

*Kdg/1st grade students should start with calendar time.  2nd-5th grade students should start with their daily warm up and at least one session of fact practice in Freckle.

Kdg: Please do Lesson 1-5.  Do Activity 1 in the lesson with the number tiles and squares that I sent home (please send these back to school on Monday).  Please also use the white paper to draw a scene for the number 5.  They will do the same thing they did for the number 2 on Tuesday.  Choose a scene or place and draw groups of 5 things they would see at that place.  Make sure they draw the number 5 on the page somewhere!

1st: Please do Lesson 1-4.  Be sure to do the lesson activities using the number tiles and stair steps that I sent home (please send these back to school on Monday) and pg. 21-22 from the workbook.

2nd: Please do Lesson 1-5 and pg. 21-22 from the workbook.  I sent home the math mountain cards they will need for Activity 2 in the lesson (please send these back to school on Monday).

3rd: Please do Lesson 1-4 and pg. 23-26 from the workbook.  Feel free to shorten the workbook pages if necessary by skipping some of the problems (use your judgement to decide which ones/how many to skip).

4th: Please do Lesson 1-5 and pg. 13-14 from the workbook.

5th: Please review Lesson 1-4 by doing the Homework/Remembering 1-4 worksheet.  Refer to the teacher’s manual for the answer key to this worksheet (or HW/Rem. answer keys are in the shared Google folder).  We worked on finding common denominators for a couple of class periods this week, but the students are still struggling with this concept a bit.  So, I would encourage you to go back to the lesson (especially pg. 12 of the student workbook) and review the way we talked about finding a common denominator.  I encourage them to use the following steps: 1. Can I change the smaller denominator to the larger one? 2. If not, count by the larger denominator until I find a multiple that is also a multiple of the smaller denominator.  3. If there is no smaller common multiple, I can always multiply the denominators together to find a common multiple.

September 14, 2020

Here is your home day work for Tuesday:

*Kdg/1st should start with calendar time.  2nd-5th should start with their daily warm up and at least one fact practice session in Freckle.

Kdg: Please finish Lesson 1-2 and start Lesson 1-3.  Do pg. 7-8 from Lesson 1-2.  For lesson 1-3 all you need to do is have your child draw a picture of a scene for the number 2.  I sent home a white piece of paper for this. Have them draw their best 2 somewhere on the page.  Then have them choose some sort of “scene” to draw.  They could choose to draw a beach scene, a school scene, their bedroom, etc.  Then have them think of some things that they might see in that scene and draw them in groups of 2.  For example, if they choose a beach, they could draw 2 sandcastles, 2 seagulls, 2 beach chairs, 2 kids playing, etc.  Please have them draw at least 3 groups of 2 items.  Encourage them to do their best work and include some good details (we’re trying to move away from just a 2 minute drawing to really spending some good quality time on our work!).  Include some color in the drawing!  We will eventually be making drawings for the other numbers up to 10 and they will end up with their own booklet.

1st: Please review Lessons 1-2 and 1-2 by doing the Homework/Remembering worksheets from both lessons.  Encourage your child to “see” the 5-groups in the numbers and count on from there.  We are working on making the 5+some extras more automatic! Refer to the teacher’s manual (or the shared Google folder) for the answer key to the HW/Rem. page.

2nd: Please finish Lesson 1-2 by doing pg. 13-14 from the workbook.  We did the lesson activities in class.

3rd: Please finish Lesson 1-2 by doing pg. 9-10 from the workbook and Activity 3 in the lesson.

4th: Please review Lesson 1-2 by doing the Homework/Remembering worksheet from the lesson.  Refer to the teacher’s manual (or the shared Google folder) for the answer key to the HW/Rem. page.

5th: Please do Lesson 1-3 (whole thing) and pg. 9-10 from the workbook.

September 10, 2020

Hi everyone! We have jumped into our lessons this week so you will be helping to wrap up the first lesson for your home day tomorrow.  I created a video in the virtual parent information that Julie sent out this morning that shows how to access the new curriculum online.  Be sure to watch that so you know how to navigate through the Teacher’s Edition online! The links to access the Teacher’s Editions (along with some additional resources) were sent to you in a shared Google folder.  Please let me know if you have any questions after watching the video!  Here is your home day work for Friday:

*Kdg/1st grade students should start with calendar time.  2nd-5th grade students should start with their daily warm up and at least one session of fact practice in Freckle.

Kdg: Please finish Lesson 1-1.  We did most of the lesson activities in class today, but you will need to do pg. 3-4 from the workbook (refer to the teacher’s manual for the answer key).  Please also help your child cut out the number tiles and squares on pg. 5 of the workbook.  I would suggest having your kids cut out around the outside of the page, and then you can cut out in between all the cards. These really need to be somewhat neat as we will be using them all year.  Please send these back in an envelope or baggie with your child’s name on it.

1st: Please finish Lesson 1-1 by doing pg. 7-8 from the workbook (refer to the teacher’s manual for the answer key).  We already did the lesson activities in class.  Please also help your child cut out the number cards on pg. 9 of the workbook.  Send these back to school in an envelope or baggie with their name on it.

2nd: Please finish Lesson 1-1.  We did pg. 3 from the workbook and talked about the discussion points on pg. 3 in the teacher’s manual. We talked briefly about writing subtraction equations with the math mountains, but you will need to go over this some more.  Please talk about the discussion points on pg. 4-6 of the teacher’s manual and do pg. 4 of the workbook.  Then do Activity 2 in the lesson and pg. 5-6 from the workbook.

3rd: Please finish and review Lesson 1-1. We talked about multiplying by 5 by counting by 5s and briefly went over the repeated addition on pg. 5 of the workbook.  You may need to review this a little.  Then please go over pg. 6 in the workbook with them.  Have them practice by doing the Homework/Remembering 1-1 worksheet that I sent home.  Refer to the teacher’s manual for the answer key (answer keys to the HW/Rem. worksheets are also in the additional resources folder in the shared Google folder).

4th: Please finish Lesson 1-1 by doing pg. 5-6 from the workbook.  We did the lesson activities in class today.  For some reason, they did not provide an answer key for this page in the teacher’s manual so you will have to familiarize yourself with the place value drawings to check your child’s work.

5th: Please review Lesson 1-1 by doing the Homework/Remembering 1-1 worksheet that I sent home.  Refer to the teacher’s manual for the answer key (answer keys to the HW/Rem. worksheets are also in the additional resources folder in the shared Google folder).

September 3, 2020

We completed week #2! It’s so fun to be getting back into the swing of things and we’re starting to get used to some of the new procedures! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and soak up the last little bit of summer! I’m looking forward to my daughter finally getting baptized this weekend after it was cancelled back in March!

There is no school on Friday or Monday, so here is your home day work for next Tuesday:

*Kdg/1st should start with calendar time.  2nd-5th should start with their warm up (it’s actually from Friday, but we’ll start the new week of warm ups at school).

Kdg: Please have your child read, count the apples, trace the numbers, and color the apple counting book I sent home! Please send this back completed on Wednesday!

1st: Please do the number recognition coloring mystery picture that I sent home.  Parents, please read off the numbers to your child and see if they can find them without looking at what the numbers look like.  If they are having trouble with this, then you can show them what it looks like at the top of the page and see if that helps them find it.  They will color the squares as directed at the top of the page to reveal a mystery picture!

2nd-5th:

  1.  Please log in to Think Central and explore some of the math games.  This is also where they will be able to access the student workbook and some of the other online resources from Math Expressions, so feel free to play around with the different resources! Here’s how to log in:
    • Go to the Clever home page, and click on my name as the teacher.  Then click on ThinkCentral.
    • They will log in by filling in the school information (I recommend clicking on the “Save my school” check box so that they don’t have to fill this in every time).  For the district, you will choose Private School.
    • Their username is their first name (the Ellas have their last initial after their name with no space: EllaV and EllaI).  The password is Ilovemath (capital i at the beginning).
    • Once they are logged in, they will click on Library.  This is the page that lists all of the online resources for the new Math Expressions.  To access the games, click on Math Activity Center, then games.  They can choose any game they want!
    • Please have them play for about 10-15 minutes.
  2. Log in to Freckle (through Clever) and complete a session of fact practice and at least one pre-assessment in a domain area that they have not completed yet.  If they have completed all of the pre-tests, they may choose any area to do some practice in.  Again, have them do this for about 10-15 minutes.

August 31, 2020

Hi everyone,

Here is your home day work for Tuesday:

Kdg/1st should start with a daily calendar time and 2nd-5th should do their daily warm up.

Kdg: Please discuss some ways that we use math outside of school.  Help them come up with some ideas and then take a picture of an item, them doing an activity, or some other way of showing their idea (usually I have them bring in an item to school, but it will be safer if you just send me a picture this year).  Send the picture to my email kboerkoel@zcs.org or you can text it to me at 231-750-3140.  I will show the pictures in class on Wednesday!

1st-5th:

  1. Please discuss some ways that we use math outside of school.
  2. Log in to Freckle and complete a session of Fact Practice.  See the blog from last week for directions on logging in.  Fact practice is an option on the dashboard.  If you don’t see it, click on the Math option at the top of the page.  There it will show you Fact Practice or Adaptive Practice.
  3. In Freckle, go to Adaptive Practice (click on Math at the top of the page if you don’t see “Adaptive Practice”) and complete another pre-assessment in a different topic area than they worked on last week.  The ones they haven’t done yet will say “Get Started” by it.  If somehow they have completed all of the pre-assessments, they may choose one of the areas and do some practice in that area.  They should spend at least 15 minutes on this.

August 27, 2020

We made it!! We completed our first week AT school! It has been SOOO good to be back! Personally, it’s been a mixed bag of emotions for me this week as I’ve had to leave my little girl for the first time, but I’m so glad I get to come spend my days with your amazing kids! We spent the week getting to know each other again and learning some math routines.  I wanted to let you know that my end-of-the-week blog posts will look a little different this year.  I will not be including the weekly recap of curriculum, since you can see that in the Week-at-a-Glance document.  I may just have a short note or any announcements for you on Thursday, but it will mostly just be your home day work posted for Friday.  Continue to look for your home day work for Tuesday posted on Monday.

Home days for the first couple of weeks will be a little simpler! We have not jumped into our lessons yet, and the curriculum is new this year so I will be creating a video tutorial for you about how to access that.  Here is your home day work for Friday:

Warm up work:

  • Kdg/1st grade: Please start thinking about what your daily calendar time can look like at home.  We do this in class, and it should also be done on every home day.  You can get an interactive calendar set like we use in class if you want (Amazon has some great options!) or you can simply use a paper wall calendar.  You should be able to count to the day’s date, see and talk about days of the week, and discuss the weather/season.  I will have more information about this for the parent information video soon, but just start thinking about this now!
  • 2nd-5th grade: Please complete the warm up that was sent home.  These look a little different this year, but the idea is the same! The topics should be mostly review (they are pulled from the book of the grade level they just completed last year), but you are welcome to help if students need it.  You do not need to correct this, but it is helpful if you can go over any questions they struggled with!

Kdg: Please complete the “Figure Me Out” poster that was sent home.  I sent home some stickers the kids may use to fill in the numbers, but feel free to use your own stickers/stamps or they can even write them if they want.  I just ask that you return the unused stickers! They will draw a picture of themselves in the center space.  Have them only write their name on the BACK of the paper.  We are going to use the number clues to see if we can figure out whose poster is whose on Monday!

1st-5th: Please log in to Freckle and complete at least one pre-assessment.  (1st graders can use a sibling’s computer if needed! Just make sure they log in using the class code and are on their account!)

  1.  2nd-5th graders can use Clever to log in. On their Clever homepage (it is bookmarked on their computer), they will just click on Freckle and it should take them right there.  1st graders will go to student.freckle.com and enter the class code: BOERKT.  Then type in their first and last name.
  2. On the “Whose class are you practicing in right now?” page, they will click K. Boerkoel.  On the next page, it will ask them which class they are practicing in.  Click on Math or Homeroom/Advisory if Math is not a choice.
  3. 1st-2nd Grade: On the dashboard, click on Math.  Then it will ask what you want to practice.  Click on Adaptive Math.  Here they can choose which domain they would like to work on first.  Choose one of the topics and then it will start their pre-assessment.  Please make sure they complete the pre-assessment in at least one of the topic areas.  Note: their progress will not save if they leave it before it’s completed so they will need to finish it in one sitting.  When they have finished at least one pre-assessment (they’re welcome to do more than one topic if they want!), they can also go back to the dashboard and do a fact practice session, but this isn’t required today.

3rd-5th Grade: After they have clicked on which class they are practicing in, they will need to click on Math again.  Then it takes them right to the dashboard.  Here they can choose a topic that they want to work on.  If there is one that has a star and says “Suggested” on it, please have them start with that one.  This will start the pre-assessment.  Please make sure they complete the pre-assessment in at least one of the topic areas.  Note: their progress will not be saved if they exit before they finish so they will need to complete it in one sitting.  Once they have completed at least one pre-assessment (they’re welcome to do more than on topic if they want), they can also go back and do a fact practice session if they want, but it’s not required today.  To do this, they will either click on the back arrow on the dashboard or click on “Math” at the top of the page.  Then choose fact practice.

Feel free to send me an email if you are having any trouble logging in! I have a busy day on Friday though, so I may not see it after noon!
