It is stories like these from parents that add value and purpose to the incredible language development that we see in the classroom. I hope everyone has a blessed Christmas!

Jingle Jog 2016!

Sharing pictures from Jingle Jog today!

It’s a busy and exciting day – and I am especially proud of the children for giving their best and running so well for 12 minutes of Jingle Jog!! We continue to talk about our friend in Philippines as well as talking about how we can help people that are less fortunate, and they are really encouraged to run and help our sister school and their building project. We will raise money specifically for our friend Wayne in February.

ENJOY THE PICTURES! Some are a little shaky as they were in action – but I think it’s absolutely worth sharing 🙂

We had fun just relaxing and enjoying calm christmas melodies while doing some christmas related colors and patterning afterwards – the children did great considering how Jingle Jog was the first thing in the morning!

Newsletter #15&16

Newsletter #15&16

The weather turned slightly warmer on Friday so the K team decided to take all the Kindergarteners outside and enjoyed sledding at the hill! It was such an exciting time and a great way to end a busy week. Check out the pictures (and a couple more that was taken as snow started coming) at our photos page!

We are definitely excited for Christmas – We have been talking about how Jesus being born is the greatest gift of all! We are almost done with our nativity story so next week we will focus on practicing telling them so that the children call tell you the Christmas story in Mandarin 🙂 We have one more week of school before Christmas Break! It is going to be a really busy one with usual learning routines, as well as special events and celebrations!

This is a 2 week newsletter – I will not be sending a newsletter first week of January! I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 🙂 See you in 2017!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

Christmas Offering

ZCS decided (a few years ago) to forego the traditional gift exchange between students in the classroom. Instead, we are asked to find someone/something local to contribute to this Christmas. All kindergarten money will go to help a ZCS family in need of some basic items this Christmas. Please consider sending $2 to help with this cause – you can send it in an envelope this coming week. Thanks for helping your child be a blessing this Christmas.

Jingle Jog/Comfy Clothes Day

We will be running the jingle jog at 9:00-9:30AM this coming Wednesday, Dec 21st. (You are encouraged to watch/join us for this event! Past parents have came in and run along with the children and they love it!). It is also Kindergarten’s comfy clothes day – so your child is welcome to wear their PJ to school. Keep in mind your children will be RUNNING and will need to wear their gym shoes. The warmest fleece and footie pjs may not be the best option for this day. (Too HOT!) ☺ Kindergarteners will probably need a substantial snack after running the Jingle Jog on this day!

*Along with PJs I encourage you to send bells, christmas socks/hats, or something festive for the children to wear for Jingle Jog!*

Please keep the pledge sheets in mind as you think about the Jingle Jog. We are supporting our sister school in the Philippines – I sent home Wayne’s profile as well so that you can get to know him 🙂 (He is a friend the whole K team is sponsoring this year – we will be doing valentine quarters to help support him specifically in February)!

What did we learn and What will we learn?

Mandarin/Language Arts: We are working intentionally to not only try to say the characters as we write them so we remember better, but also trying to understand the meaning through visuals, actions and/or making sentences. We continue to explore our weekly framework (poetry, word wall words, high frequency words, grammar, read aloud/shared reading, culture). I am starting to see many of the children recognizing different characters while we are learning – it is exciting! We are also working on trying to recall what the characters might be by looking at pictures, or thinking if we have seen or learned the specific characters before. This week I started to give them each a leveled-reading book in their book bag to practice reading in class!

Bible: We talked about Jesus’ birth, the Shepherd story as well as the 3 wise men this week. Next week we will wrap up our craft and practice telling the nativity story as a whole 🙂 I am sure the children will be excited to share the good news with you in Mandarin! When we come back in January,  we will be learning stories of Jesus’ Life.

Memory Verse/Fruit of the Spirit: We continue to practice our December Bible Memory Verse, and our December Fruit of the Spirit: Patience – we talk about how we need to wait for God’s time and that requires a lot of patience sometimes. 6 他们在那里的时候, 马利亚的产期到了,7 就生了头胎的儿子, 用布包起来, 放在马槽里, 因为客店里没有地方。(路加福音 2:6-7) I will try to assess the children’s bible memory verse this coming week and see how it goes – most of them seem to be pretty familiar with it already. If they struggle I’ll tell them I’ll hear it again when we get back in January! We continue to practice Silent Night in Mandarin.

Math: We continue look closely at the teen numbers (11-20) and talk about how it’s actually 10+more. I also start seeing the children make the connection that in Mandarin, saying the numbers is actually easier because you just say 十(ten) and 一(one) together, that will be 十一,which is 11 and so on. We focused on looking at hexagon as well as learning/reviewing what other shapes are called – we looked at how many sides and corners do different shapes have, practiced seeing and finding shapes, as well as slowly drawing them. I send home a flashcard with a little picture that your child drew for reminders and as a resource 🙂 Keep practicing recognizing Mandarin characters and making connections with your children! Next week and the week after we come back, we will focus on looking at number orders as well as continue to practice concept of addition and subtraction.

Exploring God’s World (Sci and SocStu): We wrapped up our Science unit by talking about how we can help protect our Earth and keep it clean. We all agreed that we will try out best to pick up trash, to be nice to the nature, and to help protect the earth. We continue our short Social Studies lesson of Needs and Wants this past week – we continue to identify things we need and want. We also started learning about some goods and services, and we will talk about trading – and different examples of the different concepts. It’s a great language-content crossover learning opportunity.

Writing: We continue to talk about how story has a beginning, middle and end. This week we continue to practice label things in our drawings, and start to think about how we can write our story with short sentences (thinking about how stories have beginning, middle and end). I look forward to hear Christmas and New Years stories from the kids, and writing out the stories 🙂

Play: The children continue to enjoy decorating little christmas related pictures – this week I have received so many beautiful little pictures (and many secret messages hidden at the back!) Your children absolutely warms my heart! We also enjoy learning how to cut snowflakes and putting them up on our classroom window.

Featured Friend: Elise was featured this week and we had fun getting to know her. Elise’s mom came in and join us for lunch on Wednesday, we also enjoyed listening to her reading some fairytales!

Things to Note:

Handprints and Pictures (GP Day): There are plenty of things coming home next week so I am going to start sending some of them home each day. Please help me pass along grandparents’ christmas gifts (handprint and pictures!) It truly was a special day for me to meet the grands and get to know them 🙂 Thank you!

Towels and Water Bottle: Towels will be going home for December Break this coming Wednesday, and water bottle is going home on Friday!

Looking Ahead: To also keep you in the loop – As January approaches, your child will start reading and getting leveled reading books, and this is send home in their book bags every weekend to practice at home. Also, I will start assessing the children’s word wall words and high frequency characters weekly. I want to let you know that my hope is they will be able to recognize and produce/write (in correct stroke order), their word wall words of the week – to be able to identify how it is used in sentence (which shows comprehension), and to be able to recognize their high frequency characters. The high frequency characters will also help them as they start reading.

Mandarin Homework&Flashcard: Homework and High Frequency Words will be on U3W1. Coming back in January we will continue on framework U3W2. Please help me in keeping your children accountable for following stroke order and word proportion on Homework (AND saying the words after writing it), as well as recognizing characters (and hopefully understanding most of it) for Flashcard 🙂 Thank you for all you do at home!

From the Immersion Coordinator: Spread the word… We will be hosting an information meeting in the media center on Tuesday, January 31 at 7:00 pm for anyone interested in learning more about the Mandarin and Spanish immersion programs. This meeting will be geared towards new families who are considering entering the immersion program, but current families wanting more information about our program are also welcome to attend.

What’s Coming Up?

Specials: Monday – Spanish, Art, Tuesday – Music, Spanish, Wednesday – Library, Thursday – Spanish.

Featured Friend: Ethan 郭俊毅 is featured on the week of December 19! Harmoni 欧佳悦 is featured the week we get back to school (January 9!) Reese 彭丽思 is featured on the week of January 16!

Christmas Chapel: December 22, 9:15AM.

NO Bussing and NO Hot Lunch: December 23.

Christmas Vacation: December 24-January 8.

Prayer Request:

With the change of weather and cold coming, it is so much easier to get sick. We have a couple kids with cold, and the teacher hasn’t been feeling so well – I told the children too that not being around from here, I really don’t adjust well to the winter so I get sick easily during the colder months. I LOVE the snow but please pray for health and strength! Also praying for safe drive and safe travels out in the tough roads.

It is my prayers that we will be reminded of the real meaning of Christmas and the Christmas Break will be a great and relaxing time you can enjoy with your families and friends! I thank God for the kindergarteners and families I get to work with this year 🙂

Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

谢谢!

It is so exciting to enjoy the snowy seasons with Kindergarteners! The children were really excited to enjoy the white fluffy fun snow at the playground! We are practicing our snow gears routine as well as making some adjustments to our already set routine that can now be a little different with the snow coming. Continue to practice putting on snow gears with your children at home so that the time spend preparing to go outside is shorter and we can enjoy longer time outside!

I can hardly believe we are really close to Christmas Break! December is a busy months with many things happening, and at the same time new things introduced because new routines start coming in in January. Please encourage your child to hang in there 🙂

I am starting to have the children be much more intentional in reading and recognizing different characters, as well as trying to recall what the characters might be by looking at pictures, or thinking if we have seen or learned the specific characters before. I introduced the idea of getting guided reading books to the children this past week and talked about how soon enough they will get to bring books that they know how to read home each week!

Bible: We start our Christmas story with the angel coming to Zechariah and Elizabeth, as well as coming to Mary (and later Joseph), we also talked about how Jesus was born and it was such an exciting thing for us to celebrate His birth. We are learning Jesus’ birth story along with making a craft that the children will get to bring home and retell the story of the nativity! Please send in a shoebox by Wednesday, Dec 14th for your child (labeled with their name) if you haven’t already.

We continue to practice Silent Night in Mandarin.

I also start seeing the children make the connection that in Mandarin, saying the numbers is actually easier because you just say 十(ten) and 一(one) together, that will be 十一,which is 11 and so on. Next week we will focus on looking and talking about shapes, reviewing the 4 shapes we already know (squares, rectangle, circle and triangle) and we will talk about characteristic of hexagon as well as learning what the other shapes are called.

Exploring God’s World (Sci and SocStu): We focus on looking at rocks (compare and contrast different shapes/color/sizes/structure) as well as observing to see if air existed even though we can’t really see it. Next week we will wrap up with our Science Unit – My Earth with talking about how we can help protect our Earth and keep it clean. We started our Social Studies of Needs and Wants this past week as we explore the differences between the things we need, and the things we want.

Writing: We continue to talk about how story has a beginning, middle and end. This week we looked at our thanksgiving stories and talk about how we can label things in our drawings, and then think about how we can write our story with short sentences. We also had the chance to try sharing our thanksgiving stories with the pictures that we already drew. This week was also special because we got the chance to hear an author read her own book – Glenys Nellist came and read part of her Christmas Love Letter Book for ZCS friends. I think it was an eye-opening experience for the Kindergarteners as they see how as writers, they can share their story to a lot of audiences 🙂

Play: The children are enjoying decorating christmas ornaments during play. Next week we will be cutting snow flakes 🙂 I also wanted you to know that for most of the days every week (Tuesday-Thursday about 2:35-3:15PM) we typically go down to the Preschool classrooms to play. So if there are times you need to pick up your child early, let me know so that I can let you know where we are at during that time of the day in case we are not in the classroom.

Featured Friend: Alina was featured this week and we had fun looking at her beautiful illustration on the pages. Alina’s mom brought her out for her favorite meal – Mac and Cheese!

Dismissal Time Reminder: Just a reminder that dismissal is 5 minutes earlier this year due to a change from Zeeland Public Transportation. Elementary: 3:20 ready bell, 3:25 bus dismissal bell. Parents can start picking up children at 3:25. *elementary walkers are dismissed after busses have left the drive*

Going Home Routine (on Tuesdays when LiLaoshi in on Bus Duty):On Tuesdays, I have Bus Duty so I am not there to dismiss the children at the end of the day. Typically there is a mom who helps me dismiss the children, but if there are times when it’s a mom that is unfamiliar with the children and/or the person/parents picking up – please feel free to pop in the classroom and pick up your child. They know that they are supposed to stay at their seat and can visit their friends/neighbors while they wait, in Mandarin 🙂 You do not need to wait for me to get back to class before you go.

Mandarin Homework&Flashcard: Homework and High Frequency Words will be on U2W5. Please help me in keeping your children accountable for following stroke order and word proportion on Homework (AND saying the words after writing it), as well as recognizing characters (and hopefully understanding most of it) for Flashcard 🙂 Thank you for all you do at home!

From the Immersion coordinator:
What is an enfoque lingüístico and do Mandarin students have an equivalent? Each immersion classroom from preschool through 8th grade in both Spanish and Mandarin should have a grammar and/or linguistic goal posted on the wall in a prominent area. During the week (or two weeks for preschool), the teacher and students will learn about, hunt for, and attempt to use the goal throughout all the subject areas. In this way, students are encouraged to grow and strengthen their use of the new language while studying content material.
Chinese New Year Celebration:
Greetings Staff and ZCS Mandarin families,We are eagerly anticipating a great celebration for Chinese New Year. This comes up pretty quickly after the Christmas Break, so we thought we’d give you a little advance notice! We will be celebrating on January 14th from 6:30 – 8:30 (or so) at ZCS. We would love to have you and your families join us for dumpling making (and eating) and good conversation. We also can’t wait to “ring” in the new year with the “bubble wrap fireworks,” which are always a highlight. More details will be coming as the date approaches.
We hope you can save the date and join us!

It was good to get back to school this week 🙂 I heard stories of what happened during thanksgiving, where the children went or some of the things they ate (as well as starting the christmas tree shopping/decorations)! It is exciting for me to see the children getting more and more confident communicating in Mandarin, and hearing more of it throughout the day!

We enjoyed watching and hearing, as well as joining in the music program that the 5th graders have prepared for us this Thursday, it was about love and showing love to others, and it is closely related to our school’s theme this year which is Colossians 3:17 – Selfless. It was also so good to be able to kick of the magical month of December with K-5th singing worship together this Friday. December is always such a special month and I love being able to share the great news with the children as we talk about Jesus Christ and God’s love for us.

*Each child needs a big shoe box to put up their nativity scene and bring it home at the end of the story – You may start sending in the shoe box (labeled with name) this coming week – please send in a shoe box for your child’s nativity scene latest by Wednesday, December 14th*

We are starting to work intentionally on asking and answering questions with full sentences instead of just vocabularies. I am encouraging the children a lot to practice speaking/chatting with each other – we have a quieter group in general and I am encouraging the children to speak more 🙂 I am starting to have the children be much more intentional in reading and recognizing different characters, as well as trying to recall what the characters might be by looking at pictures, or thinking if we have seen or learned the specific characters before.

Bible: We learned the story of the Ten Plagues, Moses parted the Red Sea and we talked about how the Ten Commandments are rules we must follow. We will wrap up Ten Commandments and we are going to pause on Moses’ stories for now because we are going to be focusing on Jesus’ birth story for the month of December. Next week, we will start with the angel coming to Zechariah and Elizabeth, as well as coming to Mary (and later Joseph). We have a craft that goes along with our Nativity Scene – and thank you to parent volunteers who has helped me do the prior cutting of the art! 🙂

Memory Verse/Fruit of the Spirit: I have assessed the children on their November Bible Memory Verse. We are starting to practice our December Bible Memory Verse, and our December Fruit of the Spirit: Patience.

6 他们在那里的时候, 马利亚的产期到了,7 就生了头胎的儿子, 用布包起来, 放在马槽里, 因为客店里没有地方。 (路加福音 2:6-7)

We will learn to sing Silent Night in Mandarin 🙂

Math: We continue to explore addition and subtraction, and making sense of the concept. We are learning to tell simple stories that tells us if we add/subtract (practicing our Mandarin as well!) Feel free to practice telling addition/subtraction stories when you are setting the dinner table at home, other opportunities to help them get familiar with the concept of addition and subtraction. We practiced writing number 8, and started practicing and talking about the +1 pattern (1+1=2, 2+1=3, 3+1=4…) as well as the -1 pattern (10-1=9, 9-1=8, 8-1=7…). We will be teaching writing 9 next week and focus on looking at 10s and 1s. (11 is 10 and 1 more, 12 is 10 and 2 more).

Exploring God’s World (Sci/SocStu): We discuss and compare each one and talked about how these are the materials that is a part of our land. We will continue to explore different earth materials, as well as land and water. As Christmas gets closer we will also talk about needs and wants, and introduce that concept soon.

Writing: We continue to talk about how story has a beginning, middle and end. We shared our thanksgiving story and started talking about how we can write stories through sentences.

Play: Play is now done in combination of English and Mandarin for the children – which is so fun to witness and hear 🙂 I also wanted you to know that for most of the days every week (Tuesday-Thursday about 2:35-3:15PM) we typically go down to the Preschool classrooms to play. So if there are times you need to pick up your child early, let me know so that I can let you know where we are at during that time of the day in case we are not in the classroom.

Things to Note:

Towel and Water Bottle: Water bottle and towel were sent home this week to clean. Please send them back with the children tomorrow (Monday)!

Looking Ahead: To also keep you in the loop – As January approaches, your child will start reading and getting leveled reading books, and this is send home in their book bags every weekend to practice at home. Also, I will start assessing the children’s word wall words and high frequency characters weekly. Mandarin Homework&Flashcard: Homework and High Frequency Words will be on U2W4. Please help me in keeping your children accountable for following stroke order and word proportion on Homework (AND saying the words after writing it), as well as recognizing characters (and hopefully understanding most of it) for Flashcard 🙂 Thank you for all you do at home!

From the Immersion coordinator:
Have you noticed extra talking in your child’s immersion classroom? If you have sensed more noise, chatter, or interaction in your child’s classroom, you should be encouraged! Learning a new language means using the language. Immersion teachers are continually stopping to allow their students to produce language, to interact with each other, and to experiment with the new vocabulary and grammar. This results in classrooms that might seem louder and more interactive than we remember as children, but it also results in more learning and more student engagement. Next time you walk down the hallway and hear the students in an immersion room, you can know they are growing in their new language.
