Distance learning

Dear Families,

We have been thinking about you all and lifting you up in prayer as we make the transition to digital learning together.

For this first week, we would like you to love your child. He or she is loved by you, loved by us, and loved by God. Please provide calm for your child(ren) during this uncertain time. Children pick up on our emotions. When a child feels safe, they will be ready to learn.

God has been blessing us with sunshine and we encourage you to go outside and enjoy it while you have the time. It is the perfect classroom right now to explore creation.

Each week we plan to send learning opportunities for you to do with your child at home. We will have certain activities that we would like you to complete and provide optional activities if you are looking for more things to do with your child.

By now you have seen the materials that have been sent home with your child on Friday. Please wait on completing these. We will reference some in our weekly plans and let you know week by week what can be used.

We’re thankful for all your support and want you to know we are here for you. We are learning through this together. Thank you for your patience with us as plans may change. We will all extend grace to each other.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Sincerely,

The First-grade Team

Mrs. Zwiep,  Mrs. Arendsen, Mrs. Raitz & Gonzalez, Mrs. Ruiz, Mrs. Xie

SOCIAL STUDIES:
Unit #2: How Do We Get What We Need or Want?

We will start with a PBL project to raise money for Uemi’s tuition from the Philippines.

As part of our curriculum and commitment to help Uemi in the Philipines, we have decided that each student will design and build their own piggy bank to save money for Uemis tuition. Each student will need an empty bottle of 12 to 16 oz for his project.

After they have their bank we will collect coins that they find, have or want to donate in order to be able to be a blessing for own friend and sister in Christ, Uemi.

Unit #3: How Do We Learn About Places?

In this unit students expand on the foundational knowledge of geography by exploring the geographic themes of location, place, region and human/environment interaction. Emphasis is placed on observing the environment around them using the school playground. The unit begins with students exploring the concepts of maps and aerial perspective with the book Me on the Map or a similar book. Students create a map of their own classroom. Students are also introduced to globes and learn how map makers distinguish between land and water. The concept of absolute and relative location is introduced as students learn about the absolute location using their own address and relative location as they tour the school. Students then explore the geographic theme of place as they learn to distinguish between natural (physical), characteristics and human characteristics. Using a school map, students identify regions in their school and understand that a region is a group of similar places. Finally, students are introduced to the geographic theme of human/environment interaction. Using the book Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel, or a similar book, students learn that humans modify or change their environment. In an integrated lesson, students explore how people adapt to their, environment by making seasonal changes in their clothing, homes, and activities.
