I think that the loyalists where very uncomfortable when colonists won because they did not know if they
should be a loyalists (like they are) or a Patriot but they did not want to be called a nation. Well its not like a loyalist is your neighbor
and its after the war and you surround their house with guns and be like “We won the war you have to become a patriot!” and then they charge and then kill
them if they say “NO”. Plus they (the loyalists) may feel un-identified and then they feel out of place.
