Single Stories

I hold a single story abut Africa. My single story is that Africans are all black. That is not true about all Africans.  Many Africans are Indian or American. Another single story I hold is that Africa is where poor people live. Where poverty is, where starvation and death is. I am missing that not all people are like the stereotypes that we grew up with. There are not only poor people and not everybody is in poverty. There are definitely poor people are people in poverty, but there are also people who are wealthier and live a happy life out of poverty. The lady we watched said that she was part of the middle class. She said that she had a person working for their family as kind of the help around the house. When she went to visit her helps family, she saw that there were beautifully made baskets and she was surprised  because she had this stereotype that poor people couldn’t make stuff like that. The danger of single stories are that you can hurt the people that you are stereotyping. If you don’t learn the truth about how things are actually happening in the country, you will grow up thinking these stereotypes and will never be taught the truth about these countries.
