My name is jerome and i was born a slave in north carolina and i worked in tobacco fields for about 15 years and i don’t get that much to eat and my owners don’t treat me nicely and they make me sleep on the floor in their old barn.i decided to run away because of the way they treated me.i traveled with lots of help on the way met lots of abolitionist on the way to help me and after travelling a long time i made it to the mississippi river and i met a abolitionist and he let me use his boat to sail across the mississippi river and go to canada now days im working in california at a restaurant and get paid alot.
