Math: Story Problem0

Tasha drove for a 90 minutes, she went 45 miles. How many miles did she cover in a half an hour (30 minutes).

First you need to set up the ratio, which is: miles to minutes.

Miles:                     45

————       =       ———

Minutes:                 90

Next, you need to figure out how to many miles she’ll travel in a half an hour, so you would want to change the 90 minutes to 30 minutes.

So, divide the 90 by 3, since 30 goes into 90, 3 times.        90/3 = 30.

But, in order to keep this an equivalent ratio, you have to do it to both sides of the equation.

Divide the 45 by 3.        45/3 = 15

  45/3 = 15                15

  —————      =      ——–

   90/3 = 30               30

Tasha would drive 15 miles in a half an hour.

What Have I Learned in Math This Week?0

I think that one of the most useful things that I have learned in Math class this week was how to do negative scientific notation. I knew what normal scientific notation was, and how to use it, but I never even knew that you could have negative scientific notation. I especially didn’t know how to use it, it is very different than having positive scientific notation. I think that this will be helpful in life because if I have a very large negative number or fraction, then I won’t have to write out all of the numbers, I can just use negative scientific notation.

The Outsiders Essay0

Over all, I really liked this book. There were some parts I didn’t love but then I liked others a lot. I feel like it was easy to connect to the characters, even though we are not constantly being jumped, or our best friend didn’t kill someone and then get killed. We are close in age to Ponyboy and may have gone through, or are going through, a similar experience, like dealing with bullies or a death of someone close to us. I also really liked how it was easy to relate to the main theme, stay gold. It means to stay yourself and young and free while you can, don’t try to grow up to fast. We can connect with it because right now we are gold, we are young. Some of us might be wishing that we were adults or older than what we are. But your youth only comes once and doesn’t say very long.

I think that the actors in the movie, and the movie it’s self stayed somewhat faithful to the book. The actors were not at all like what I pictured the characters to be but, by the end of the movie I was used to them, now that is how I picture them. The actors did have some of the same characteristics as the book described (hair color, eye color, build). The movie had several of the main things in it that happened in the book. However, it did leave quite a few things out. I liked that it didn’t add anything or change anything like some other movies based after books do. I was really glad that they didn’t do that because then it changes the whole story and isn’t as good as the book. The movie ended the same way that the book did and I liked that. The actors also said a lot of lines that were in the book. I think that over all, the movie did an alright job following the book.

I do however, feel there were more things that were different than similar. The actors and the movie didn’t stay completely faithful to the book. Like I said, the actors were not at all as I pictured them to be. I feel as though in the book many of the boys were described as very hard and sort of emotionless. But, in the movie there were a lot more tears and emotion than there were in the book. The movie also skipped a lot of the book. There were some of my favorite scenes that they completely left out in the movie. The movie’s beginning didn’t stay true to the book at all. It was completely different and not nearly as good. These are the reasons I feel the movie was unfortunately different from the original story in the book.

I agree with some of the choices that the movie director and actors made, but I disagree with the majority of them . First, if I was the movie director, I do not think that I would have used a lot of the actors that they did. Some of their choices were fine but others did not remind me of the character in the book at all. I didn’t love a lot of the other choices that the director made either. I didn’t really like that the actors made several parts in the movie look cheesy and not very good. For Example, when Cherry was talking to Ponyboy about not saying hi to him in the halls, when Dallas was mad in the hospital, and then when Johnny was telling Ponyboy to stay gold. I felt that those were all really good and intense parts in the book but the movie made them look almost comical. I think that that was both the directors and the actors fault. I disagreed with a lot of the decisions that the actors and the director made.

In the end, I really liked the book: The Outsiders. It was a very good short book with a great, meaningful theme that could be easily related to by my grade. Even though the movie was not the best, the book was definitely worth reading. The book has a lot of valuable life lessons that we should take from it and apply to our lives. The Outsiders was a great book to read.

8th Grade Theme Writing0

The have to speech, they use not words; No sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into the earth, their words to the end of the World.

Psalm 19:3-4

While we were at 8th grade camp we decided what our theme for the year would be. The teachers split us up into a couple of groups of ten or so people. We spread out from the other groups and starting talking about how to choose the theme. We each had a bible and we started to look through them, writing a whole bunch of verses down that we thought that would be good for our school. Once we each had some that we liked. We talked about them and voted on them. Each small group had to narrow it down to one verse. Then a few people presented it to the whole grade. Finally, we all voted on the one that we liked best. As and 8th grader I can use our theme when I’m at school and also when i’m away from school and interacting with other people.

As an 8th grader at ZCS the theme means a lot to me. It means that we need to always be doing actions that show God’s love around school and to all of the other kids. The younger kids should look at me and the rest of my grade, and just by our actions, they should see God working through us. I hope that most of the younger kids look up to us. And if we have a whole lot of little kids looking up to us, we should probably be a good example. If they see us acting disrespectful to teachers, loud, rude, mean, gossiping about others, being cocky during sports or anything that doesn’t seem like a good christian example, it will surly effect them. Here are some ways that we could shout silently as 8th graders: hold open the door for chapel, let the younger kids go in front of us in lines, give the little kids high fives and be always nice to them. We also should offer to do things that would help out a teacher or other student without being asked. During sports, after school and for P.E. we should always have a good attitude toward your team and the other team. We can shout silently by playing fair, and even if we loose, having a great attitude about it.

As a christian the theme for this year means a lot to me. It means that no matter where we are or what we are doing, we should be doing it for Christ. We should be able to tell others about Christ even if we never say a word. We need to have actions that speak. My goal as a christian is that others look at the way that I act, do things, and handle things, and see God through me. There are many ways that we can use our theme, shout silently, in the world. I could help out at a local food drive, shelter, or other nonprofit organization that helps our community. Or I could do even smaller things than that by just even doing things around my house to help out my parents with out being asked to do so.

As and 8th grader I can use our theme when i’m at school and also when i’m away from school and interacting with other people. Hopefully, we will see God at work in us through this years theme, shout silently.

Book Review0

Maximum Ride by James Patterson

This is an intense series about love, hardships, emotion, and struggle for survival. Fights to the death are very common, it’s a miracle that everyone in the “flock” is still alive.

The series Maximum Ride is about five kids that were genetically enhanced with bird DNA, They have wings and some other strange powers, but other than that, they are completely human. the five friends grew up in a lab, but one day they escaped. The have been on the run ever sense. The kids can fly so that makes some things easier but way harder at the same time. They go through many epic fights to the death. There are constantly  people sneaking on them and trying to kill them, they can’t trust anyone. Yet, some how they are still alive. Max, who is the leader of the “flock” is the same age as fang, 14. They have been best friends, they have always had each others back. Until, they fall in love, sneaking out at night to see each other. But, many problems arise from this!

I think that my favorite part in the series is when Max finally warms up a little to Dylan. She is always so mean to him, but now it seems like she is kind of letting him in.

I think that you would like this book if you are really into fighting and constant action, but it is also a little bit of a love story.

Africa Entry Event0

Last week Thursday and Friday we had some discussions on Africa. We learned a lot of new things about it. On Thursday we did something called a wordle. Our teacher had us open up this document and said, write everything that comes to your mind about the topic word when he said it. The topic word was Africa. We sat there and wrote down words and phrases for a couple of minutes. After we were done writing he opened up the wordle thing. It had created a big picture of words. The big words were the most used words and the smaller words were the words that were only written a few times. One of the really big words was poor. We latter talked about how we have so many stereotypes about Africa. Yes, it is true that certain parts of the continent are very poor but not all of them. A lot of the countries or just different locations in these countries are actually quite rich. I really enjoyed looking at what everyone thinks about Africa and it’s people. On Friday Our teacher had a slide show of pictures of people. He showed us the picture and told us to write down weather we thought that they were originally from Africa or not. There was around 20 images and I only got about 60% of them right. That shows that I really don’t know much about Africans. The rest of my 7th grade class got about the same number of people right. Sometimes we have the stereotype that all of the people in Africa are black. But not all of them are. Latter we talked about the percents of different things in different countries. For example, we learned that around 50% of the people living in Africa are Christians. Another thing that we talked about and compared to the US was the percentage of cell phones or computers that certain countries have. I think that these two days really opened my eyes to how much I don’t know about Africa.

7A Camp Reflection 20140

Who am I?

During the time we were given, I read the verse Psalm 139. It says that God is always with us, even when we want him to go away! He is everywhere. He knows what is best for us. God will search us and he knows our heart better than we do.

The things that I have been through in life is what makes me who I am today. Everything that we go through, whether it is big or small, is going to end up shaping us to be the person that God intends us to be. God knows what is best for us

Who are we?

I read the verses, Acts 2:42-47. These verses talks about Christians getting together with other Christians, eating and talking about God with happy hearts, praising him together. I think that this verse is telling us that sometimes it is good to get together with some people that share your beliefs, and talk to them about it.

We need to share our struggles with other Christians (our class mates) and ask for prayers. An example of this is Ally and Morgan Zylastra. Their mom was recently diagnosed with cancer. They told our 7th grade community right away and we have been praying for her constantly. She has been getting much better. Our community is surrounding them with love, just like God wants us to.

Who is he?

I have not had that many huge struggles in my life of any sort that have made me really, really lean on God. I believe that I do need him very much. But sometimes I feel like my life is too easy and comfortable, so I don’t need to lean completely on him. Still, I know that he is constantly there for me, and that I need him. I would probably say that God is my provider and protector more than anything else. He has always provided for my needs and kept me safe in whatever I am doing and wherever I am going.

Density Unit0

During this unit we weighed and measured many different objects, figuring out the volume and mass all of them. Then we divided the mass by the volume (m/v) and came up with the density. The higher the number we got, the more dense the object is. The lower the number we got, the less dense the object is. The density of an object affects whether an that object will sink or float. If an object is more dense than water, it will sink but if it is less dense than water, that object will float. Two different objects of the same size can have different densities because their mass may be different from each other. If an object is heavier or lighter, it may affect the density and whether it sinks or floats.
