Newsletter 17: Week of January 28

Week Overview

It was another great week at school together! So far everyone is staying relatively healthy, but we have had several people gone on vacations.  One thing that stuck out to me this week was the beautiful friendships your children are forming and the way that they miss each other and pray for each other when someone is not there.

Reminders

Dear families,

As we close the first semester and begin the next, we have much to be grateful for! God has been good to us! There is also a lot going on and so we’ve compiled a list of the most important announcements we’d like to make sure to communicate well to you. If you have any questions, please let us know!

Thank you!

Your Kindergarten Team

  • Report cards will be available online starting January 26.
  • Accessing the report card
    • If you don’t have a login to Parent Portal please fill out the acceptable use policy found here. Please return the form to the office and they can process your request for an Infinite Campus Login.
    • If you have a login already but don’t remember your password, please contact Barb at ZPS to reset your password.  Email: bvanginh@zps.org
  • Report card grading system
    • The skills left blank on the report card have not been taught fully or assessed yet. We will be covering these skills more in the 2nd half of the school year.
    • A 1 indicates that a child is beginning to reach that goal, a 2 indicates that a child is developing that skill, and a 3 indicates that a child has mastered that skill. It is perfectly acceptable for a child to be at a level 2 right now. We are hoping that all students are growing past a 1 at this point, but kindergarten is all about beginning school skills. The next couple of months are big months for learning and growth!
    • Please let me know if you have any concerns or questions. I would love to talk with you about your child’s report card!!
  • In February, Kindergarteners at ZCS collect money for our sister school in the Philippines. This is a beautiful way for the kids to show love to their neighbors far away. A handout with more information will be going home next week, but for now, please put it on your radar and begin thinking of ways your child might be able to be extra helpful around the house to earn money for our sponsor school.
  • Valentine’s Day: We’re looking forward to celebrating friendship and being extra mindful of Jesus’ command to love one another on Wednesday. February 14! Kids will participate in a variety of math and literacy centers, including passing out valentines. If you are going to do valentines (yes, this is optional!) we ask that you please leave the “To:__” section blank. If you choose to bring valentines, please be sure there are enough for every classmate.
  • 100th Day: Your kids have worked so hard for 100 days of school! We plan on celebrating on Tuesday February 13. If your child would like to dress up as a superhero or princess, they are welcome to! We are eagerly expecting a visit from Zero the Hero! 🙂
  • No hot lunch February 6.

Curriculum

Bible: We continue to practice the January Bible verse, I hope to assess this in the next couple of weeks.  This week we talked about The Lord’s Prayer. We serve a big God who is willing to listen to our prayers- big or small. Thank you, Jesus!

Matthew 19:14 But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them. For the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Mateo 19:14 Pero Jesus dijo, “Dejad a los niños venir a mí y no se los impidais. Porque de los tales es el reino de los cielos.”

I don’t have a separate video for this verse, but we are learning this song by Steve Green. The lyrics are from our Bible verse. Please click here to share the song with your child. (Please be aware of unpredictable ads that may play before the song.)

Literacy: In grammar we continued to talk about the order of adjectives. We quickly discovered that, contrary to English, in Spanish the adjective comes after the noun.

  • Reading strategy: Questioning
  • Read aloud: Rebeca
  • Vocabulary words
    • la maceta (flower pot)
    • contento/a (happy)
    • la paleta (sucker)
    • arrullar (to lull to sleep)
    • regar (to water)
    • la carreta (cart)
    • chupar (to suck)
    • la patineta (scooter, skateboard)
  • Word wall word: bien (good)
  • Phrase of the week: Estoy emocionado/a. (I’m excited.)
  • Letter of the week: Bb

Math: In math we began looking at addition problems as having two parts and a whole.  For example, two parts that make 6 are 4 and 2 (6=4+2.) We also began looking at teen numbers and working to identify the group of 10 and “extras.” Maestra Medrano and I enjoyed doing some co-teaching during math this week!

Writing Workshop: We continued to talk about pattern books.  This week each child wrote a page for our classroom book with the pattern Yo veo and theme zoo animals.

Exploring God’s World: We continued to talk about motion. The kids practiced blowing air through straws to move heavy and light balls.  They quickly discovered that it took a LOT more air to move a heavy ball than a light ball. Moving a heavier object takes a bigger force and a harder push!

Up in Lights: Allie was up in lights this week! She loves Tennis and even introduced us to her American girl doll, Grace.  We are so glad we get to Kindergarten with you Allie!

Newsletter 16: Week of January 21

Week Overview

It was another great week at school together! The highlight of our week I think was our field trip to For The Kidz Gymnastics. The kids were able to experience first hand the push, pull, and gravity concepts we’ve been talking about in science. From their smiles it was clear they loved the trampolines, obstacle course, inflatable course, and foam pit! I suspect they slept well on Friday night! Thank you to everyone who helped make our field trip possible from filling out waivers to driving us there safely. I appreciate you all!

Important Dates

Monday, January 22: No School, Teacher In-Service

February 9: NO PM Bus – NO Hot Lunch

February 19: President’s Day break – No School (Preschool-8th)

February 28: All School Chapel 9:00

Reminders

  • Report Cards: By Friday, January 26 I will complete a report card for every child in our class. I have been doing lots of assessing the past couple of weeks. I’m looking forward to reporting on the data I’m collecting! Your kids are working so hard and you should be very proud of them! To access the report card you will need your parent portal log in. If you need help the office will be able to assist you.

Curriculum

Bible: In Bible we continued walking through the events of Jesus’ ministry. This week we read about Jesus calling his 12 disciples, ordinary people like you and me. Then we learned about Jesus blessing the children. It was exciting to read the story of where our January Bible verse comes from.

Literacy: In grammar we continued to talk about adjectives. This time we focused on long possessive adjectives- mio, tuyo, suyo, (mine, yours, his/hers) for example.

  • Reading strategy: Questioning
  • Read aloud: Las estaciones
  • Vocabulary words
    • abrigar (bundle up, wrap up)
    • ilumina (light up)
    • las luciérnagas (lightning bugs)
    • el deporte (sport)
    • rodar (to roll)
  • Word wall word: el día (day)
  • Phrase of the week: Yo tengo ___. (I have ___.)
  • Letter of the week/Handwriting letter: Zz

Math: The kids got to do a couple rounds of math centers in the morning as Maestra Medrano and I worked with small groups on solving simple addition and subtraction problems, including how to draw them. We also practiced looking for groups of 5. These are all parts of our unit 2 test. I’ll be administering this test in small groups and I’m excited and grateful for this opportunity for the kids to show me how much they are learning!

Writing Workshop: Right now we are working through a unit on pattern books. Pattern books have repeating words on each page. We’ve been reading lots of pattern books and working on identifying the pattern and theme of each book. As a class we wrote our first pattern book together about the objects we see in our classroom. On each page we also used an adjective to describe the object.

Exploring God’s World: On Thursday we learned an important word, gravedad, gravity! We built ramps and slid a variety of balls down the ramp. We discovered that, because of gravity, the balls will always fall back down. We headed to For the Kidz Gymnastics to get more practice feeling push and pull in our bodies.

Purposeful Play: We added some new toys to our collection and traded some toys with another kindergarten class. It was very refreshing and sparked some fun and creative ideas!

Up in Lights: Asa was up in lights this week! It was a treat to learn more about him and his family. Asa loves all things sweet and when he grows up he’d like to be a police officer. Thank you for sharing some of your favorite things with us, Asa!

From the Immersion Coordinator, Jodi Pierce

Have you heard the news? I am excited to share that the Michigan Department of Education has added the potential of receiving a Seal of Biliteracy to a high school diploma. We join over half of the US states in recognizing this important skill in our youth. Students must demonstrate high levels of proficiency in two languages during their junior or senior year of high school. The great news is that nearly all of our students are reaching the recommended levels already during their time at ZCS, and should they apply for this seal as they graduate from high school, they will be able to share this recognition with both colleges and employers. For more information visit this link: Seal of Biliteracy

Newsletter 15: Week of January 14

Week Overview

It feels so good to be with your children again! We had a great first week back! Tuesday our student teacher, Matiana Medrano, joined us. Everything I’ve learned about her so far or seen her do with your kids is so affirming to the fact that she will be an amazing teacher! We are blessed to have her with us for the next 7 weeks! Please read her bio below.

I am so excited and looking forward to student-teach in Maestra Izenbaard’s classroom! My name is Maestra Medrano. I went to school and was raised in the small town of Fennville, Michigan. I am the oldest of four siblings. There are two girls and two younger boys in our family. We also can’t forget about our dog, Princess! Pretty soon, I will graduate from Hope College in May of 2018. After that, I will be teaching at Holland Public Schools. Since Spanish is my first spoken language, I will be teaching in Spanish in a kindergarten classroom at HPS. I love to travel, running outside and spending time with family and friends! This Christmas, I went on a road trip to Mexico with my parents and brothers and sisters to visit our grandparents. We had a great time and had so much fun. I may even bring pictures from our trip to show you at school! I can’t wait to get to know all of you and to share many wonderful moments in class for the rest of the year.

Sincerely,
Maestra Medrano

Reminders

  • ZCS Showcase: This is for any family interested in learning more about ZCS. This is especially important for any families that are looking at ZCS for preschool or Kindergarten next year. Please pass on this time to any families you know that may be interested.
  • For The Kidz Gymnastics Field Trip: We are still looking for a few more drivers! Right now I have enough seat belts for 17 squished kindergarteners in very full cars. If you’re available, please sign up using this link for SignUpGenius. We’ll leave school about 9:30 and plan to be back about 11:30. It’s best if siblings stay behind and let this be a special time for your kindergartener. Thank you!

Curriculum

Bible: In Bible we talked about Jesus growing up and beginning his ministry. We saw that John baptized Jesus and this was part of God’s plan. We talked about God the Father, God the Holy Spirit, and God the Son all being present at Jesus’ baptism.

Literacy: We continued to explore adjectives. This week we learned about possessive adjectives- mi, mis, tu, tus, su, and sus. One thing I love about immersion education is the way it empowers students when they realize these touch-sounding concepts are really things they use all the time! My job is to simply help the kids notice the language they’re already using. 🙂

  • Read aloud: La Clase de Dibujo
  • Vocabulary Words:
    • el dibujo- drawing
    • la tortuga- turtle
    • la cabeza- head
    • los colors- colors
    • el/la artista- artist
  • Word wall word: de (of)
  • Phrase of the week: Yo veo _____. (I see _____.)
  • Letter of the week/handwriting letter: Dd

Math: In Math we continue to work on number formation, grouping numbers to add more quickly

Writing Workshop: We began a new unit on pattern books. We read several different examples of pattern books as we practiced identifying the pattern and the theme on each page.

Exploring God’s World: We began our unit on motion. We learned about pushes and pulls, working to identify each one in real life examples and feel them in our bodies as we practiced the actions.

Up in Lights: Ava was up in lights this week! She shared a very special photo book her mom made for her when she was younger. It was fun to get a glimpse of what Ava was like as a baby, toddler, and today! Ava, God made you so special and we’re glad you’re in our class!
