Reflections on our week…

Dear Families,

This week Wednesday our kindergartners led us in a beautiful chapel centered on the themes of Created with a Purpose, lent, and Wonderfully Made. They read The Tale of the Three Trees, a book I highly recommend reading this time of year! Another highlight this week was when we celebrated our realistic fiction stories. Your kids are growing into phenomenal authors! Your kids are showing true stamina as we continue working hard in these last days before spring break. I’m looking forward to a few more good school days together and then a break! I will not be writing a new blog post at the end of next week, but I hope you all have an amazing week off!

Enjoy your weekend!

Reminders & Announcements:

Toys from Home: We have noticed recently that several toys from home have made their way to school. Please keep all toys at home except for on special days we announce. It would be so sad if any of these special toys were lost or damaged at school!

Report Cards: Next week report cards and MAPS scores will be sent home! We are so proud of your children for their hard work! Please let us know if you have any questions. This was our first time taking the MAPS Growth this year. We use this tool to help us discover what your child is ready to learn next. It is one snapshot into your child’s learning.

OPTS: The One Page Tuition Sheet should be arriving in your mailbox soon if it hasn’t already.

Hot Lunch Information: Our lunch system will undergo a transition over Spring Break. Starting Monday, April 11th, our hot lunch program will be run and managed by Holland Christian School. Zeeland Public will no longer be in charge of our hot lunch program. This means that all parents who want to deposit money into their child’s lunch account MUST create a new account in Sendmoneytoschoool.com under Holland Christian School. (All money rolls over to the next school year or can be transferred to a sibling. Currently, there are no deposit fees.) Any current accounts under Zeeland Public School with a balance over $10 will receive a check from Zeeland Public for the remaining balance. Any current accounts with a balance under $10, the money will be brought to our school office and we will distribute to our families.

Young Authors Celebration: This year we will welcome Mary Morgan, author of the National Parks Mysteries as well as the Runaway Lawnmower (this one both in English and in Spanish). If you’d like to order one or more of her books, please see the order form below and return it no later than Friday, March 18. Our class will be meeting with Mrs. Morgan and she will be sharing what it’s like to be an author as well as her process for writing The Runaway Lawnmower.

Whitecaps Reading: Each year during March we participate in “March is Reading Month” with the Whitecaps Community Foundation.  Your child will receive and take home a Reading Club Calendar, where they can track their reading.  Once reading is complete parents can fill out the ticket order form to redeem two free tickets to a Whitecaps Game.  On the side of the Reading Tracker / Ticket Order Form, you will see a blue bookmark that is able to be torn off.  This is for the Nine Innings of Prizes.  When your student attends their free game, they will be able to turn in the bookmark at the Box Office to be entered in to prize drawings. (More information is listed on the bookmark.)

Reflections on our week…

Dear Families,

This week Tuesday morning I finished meeting with each child individually to read and was blown away by how much they’re growing! Your kids amaze me! Other highlights of this week included listening to 7th graders share their stories and learning their writing process of revising, asking a partner for editing help, and adding details is very similar to ours! In our own writing workshop time we have been working hard on realistic fiction stories. We have also spent time revising, meeting with writing partners, and adding details based on ideas our partners give us. This morning students illustrated and colored their final drafts. We look forward to sharing our writing together and celebrating next week! Hope you had a great week too!

Enjoy your weekend!

Reflections on our week…

Dear Families,

What a fun week! Comfy cozy reading day was a great way to end a 4-day week together! This week I started meeting 1:1 with students to figure out a more accurate reading level for each child. Wow, I am excited with how much growth there has been since the last time I did this! Your kids are working so hard and growing more every day! Thank you so much for the many ways you support this from home including reading take-home books from school and other books with them. Reading together has become such a special time for Addie Grace and I and a natural way for me to speak one of her love languages, physical touch, as we snuggle and share the book. Reading groups may shift a bit and your child’s take-home books may get a little harder, because they are totally ready for it! So proud of them!

Have a great long weekend!

Reflections on our week…

Dear Families,

It feels like I long time since it’s been my turn to write the blog post! It feels good to connect with you in another way and reflect together on our week. This week we turned the calendar to March and the weather seems to be cooperating accordingly! Hooray! Many students have chosen to stop wearing snowpants, which is fine. If your child does wear his/her snowpants you may want to check if they need to be washed, because our playground is quite muddy! This is another reason it may be wise to tuck an extra set of clothes in your child’s backpack.

Each season I love reflecting on the growth I’ve seen in your children. We are currently writing realistic fiction stories. I see so many of them using the sight words and syllables we’ve been practicing. The challenge I have for them right now is to include dialogue in their writing. Our class is full of creative authors!

Have a great weekend!
