What is a Name?

April 28, 2014

Hi viewers! Have a good weekend? I did. I’m not here to tell you about my weekend though. I’m here to talk about names. Names are given to us by our parents, but do you ever want a new name? If you could change your name, what would you change it to and why? Tell me below.

If I was forced to, I would change my name to Paige. Why? Because it is a name that my father likes and I think it’s really pretty too.

I like my name though, so I would not change it if I had a choice. I like my name because It is a good Biblical name. I like that my  name means princess.

What Does Easter Mean to YOU???

April 21, 2014

Hi viewers! This past Sunday was a very special day, for Christians like me in particular. It was Easter!

To me Easter means the day Jesus rose from the dead. He had died the Friday before, now deemed Good Friday. He been to hell for 3 days, then he rose up from the grave. Easter means the end of Jesus suffering what we should suffer. We don’t suffer it though, because Jesus rose from the dead. Easter means a time of family, a time of celebration, a time of remembrance of what Jesus did for you and me. To me, Easter is more than chocolate and eggs. It’s a time of celebration. Of joy. Of life. It’s the day Jesus rose from the dead. 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

What does Easter mean to you? Tell me below.

Spring Break Reflection: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

April 14, 2014

We are back from Spring Break! I had a lot of fun! This is my reflection. Did you have fun over Spring Break? What did you do? This is what I did.

1. I went to a water park in Dundee MI.

The Good: I had a lot of fun with my family. The water park is called Splash Universe. It was only open for 5 hours. I got to be in the water park for 4 and 1/2 hours. I had a lot of fun there.

The Bad: They were short on tubes and you had to what in a line for a tube.

The Ugly: Nothing 🙂

2. I went to Fredrick Meijer Gardens.

The Good: I got to go there with Pops, Mom, and Sam. The butterflies were amazing! We also got to do a tram tour around the sculpture park.

The Bad: No butterflies landed on me! 🙁

The Ugly: Right after the tram tour, it started to RAIN!!! 🙁 We didn’t get caught in it though. 🙂

3. We went bowling.

The Good: We got a gift card to play some arcade games with. We of course bowled too.

The Bad: It was a little hard to figure out how to use the cards.

The Ugly; Sam got 3rd place out of 3, and he was not happy!

That is what I did! What did you do? Did you have fun? What was YOUR good, bad, and ugly?

Hopes and Dreams for Spring Break!!!!!!!!!

I really want to have a lot of fun over Spring Break. I want to have a sleepover with my friend. It will be at her house , probably. If she is at home that is. If she is home, then my family and her family will go bowling or laser tag. If she is not home then just my family will go bowling or do laser tag. I also want to go to Crazy Bounce, with or without my friend’s family. We will be staying home, so I can watch the sunrise from my own bed. Spring Break… here I come!!!

Marble Roller Coaster

On March 28 we made marble roller coasters. We were in teams of 4. The people in my team were me, Jazlynn, Gabe, and Bennet. The materials we used were foam pipe insulation, tape, a marble, and a picture of a scary clown. Our roller coaster had many odd things about it. First, our marble went over “the pit of doom” (a sink really). Then it came to a scary clown. You went in the clown’s mouth. Then the marble dropped into a long, dark tunnel. When it  came out of the tunnel, there was a loop. After that you rounded a corner and then the ride was over. Here is a picture of us and part of the coaster.roller coaster

Whose Fault was the Boston Massacre? Why?

I think it was the British’s fault because all the colonists were doing was throwing snowballs. When it escalated and the colonists taunted the British, saying that they were scared to shoot, why would the British listen to commoners and not the commander? It just doesn’t seem to make sense. If the British hadn’t fired or shot a warning shot into the air, would things turn out differently? I think they would’ve, but I’m not sure.

Memoir Update

3-12-14

How is your memoir going so far?

I think it is coming along. It’s slow, but it’s coming.

What is going well?

I think the memory section is coming along the best.

What are you struggling with?

My fourth paragraph is about more description, and I can’t think of more description. I am also struggling with similes.

I just began the memoir not that long ago though, so I am still working on the first draft.

Letter to the King

Dear King George,

I am a colonist from New Jersey. You are a wonderful king.  Except for one thing: Writs of Assistance. I can take taxes, but not Writs of Assistance.

Here’s why. In mine and many other colonists minds, it is an invasion of privacy.

Let me explain. We may be working in our shops and we hear a knock on the door. We answer it politely. However, instead of “ Can we please come in?” we get “Sit! Be quiet! Move out of the way!” We don’t even get an explanation! They don’t even have a warrant! In England you need a warrant. Why can’t it be the same here?

Please take this into consideration.

Memoirs

A memoir is memories with a moral.

I learned that a memoir can be two kinds of writing: a personal narrative, an essay or a combination of the two.

Old Comers in the New World

This is the story that was being worked on with all those steps. All those steps and this story was a research report, in case you were wondering.  Enjoy 🙂

Pilgrim Culture

Some games the Pilgrims played were tug of war, pillow pushing, and pitching the bar. Some foods they ate were fish, corn, and fowl.

They had some very different names too. One boy had the name Love.

Clothes were different also. The men wore a ruff around the neck and a felt hat on top of their head. Stockings came to just below the knee. Women wore things like a coif (a very tight hat), a jacket/ shirt item called a waistcoat, and petticoats.

Parents sometimes taught their children to read and write at home. Of course children memorized Bible verses too. That’s one of the reasons why the Pilgrims left their home in England after all.

Kids liked to play games such as shooting marbles through the “knicker box.” “The point of this game was to get the marbles through the arches without having them bounce back.”*

Kids had to do chores back then too. Some chores they did were fetching water and getting firewood.

First Thanksgiving

Some foods they ate at the first Thanksgiving were: venison, stuffed cod, goose pudding, soup, fruit tarts, trifle, and much else. There was a party and they had a feast. The celebration lasted about a week. There was dancing also. A popcorn variation was part of the feast too. The women roasted some ducks over an open fire. Men had to hunt and kill for food. Ducks were probably the main course. In the Bay area where they lived waterfowl was plentiful.

The reason for the feast was to celebrate the Pilgrim’s first successful

harvest. Both Englishmen and Wampanoags alike celebrated with the feast.

Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving an official holiday in 1863. To be exact he said it was to be celebrated on November 26, 1863.

New Land

When the Pilgrims came over to the new land the place they settled in was cleared and ready for planting. However they came late in the season and nearly starved to death. That all happened the first winter. Then Squanto came and helped them.

The geography was quite cold in the winter. They settled in what is now Cape Cod Bay.

In the new land what challenges faced them?

This question makes me think that they had many challenges. For example the first winter, where many pilgrims died. I wonder if some in their dying hour thought “Was this really worth it, or should’ve I just stay in England?” Could it be that many other people thought this? Not just the dying ones?

The Pilgrims did not refer to themselves as Pilgrims, but rather Old Comers.

Native Americans

Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to properly plant corn. Samoset was one of Squanto’s friends. Massasoit was the chief of the local Wampanoag tribe. Some Indians thought that Massasoit was dead.

Massasoit was not dead. Another time one boy got lost in the woods and he was found with another tribe, safe and sound. Another time the Wampanoag tribe was almost killed by eight other tribes.

Squanto’s tribe had lived on the land where the Pilgrims settled. Squanto was taken as a slave by the English men. That’s where he learned English. While he was a slave the rest of his tribe died of a horrible plague. He was the lone surviver of his tribe.

Mayflower

On the Mayflower the journey lasted about 66 days. There were about 100 people on the boat. About 50 of those 100 died. There were about 18 women on the boat and about 13 of those died. After the voyage was done you would have to wait for a house.  While you waited you lived on the Mayflower.

The Mayflower went from Plymouth, England to what is now Cape Cod Bay. When they sailed, they sailed southwest. They sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. They sailed in the season of autumn. The pilgrims got to the new world when it was getting colder. Therefore they had no success with crops. Many people died.

Thoughts for 66 days of unpleasant life on a tiny boat.

This thought makes me think some of the Pilgrim’s thoughts on the Mayflower were some stuff along the lines of: Is it all worth it, do I know what I’m doing, am I going to survive? The children’s thoughts might have been like this: I miss my friends and family. I’m realizing that they didn’t have a bath in 66 days. Also they started to starve. It must have been really hard not to whine or complain every 5 seconds. They also got seasick a lot.

Why Did The Pilgrims Leave England?

Some wanted fortune but most wanted religious freedom. Some also simply wanted a better life.

How difficult was life in England that the Pilgrims would leave their family and friends behind?

This question makes me think that some must have been very desperate for religious freedom. I wonder if some people left on the Speedwell, another ship that almost sunk, once they got off they decided it was safer to just stay back in England. Considering that, if you didn’t worship like the King in England and you were found you could be hung (killed), jailed, or at the least you could have your house and/or job taken away.

Leaving England meant leaving behind your family forever. You could never see them for Christmas or for birthdays. The reason for this is simple: you couldn’t just zip back and forth across the ocean.

Another thing that makes me wonder why would they leave England is that crossing the ocean is very dangerous. What if the boat would be tossed by waves and sunk? Or what if all is going well, and then the boat springs a leak in the middle of the ocean and the boat then sunk? This makes me think that it was really bad in England to not worship like the King.

Sumopaint

What did you learn?

I learned  how to use sumopaint and how to do fun projects.

Did you like it?

Yes, I loved it. It was so much fun to use and the projects were awesome!

How can you use it again?

Well we can use it for making a picture to cheer up a sick friend or we can use it for school picture projects.
