“Truck Hit Caused Washington State Bridge Collapse, Police Say”

The Washington bridge carries 77,000 cars a day, was built in 1955. It collapsed on Thursday around 7 pm. Amazingly no one died. Dan Sligh, a Navy vet, saw it coming: a trailer (18-wheeler) in oversized load. He slammed on the brakes, but the truck and the trailer pulled him and his wife off of the bridge into the water feets below. He said, “You hold on as tight as you can” then he saw a “white flash and cold water”. On the impact he dislocated his shoulder but as a vet he popped it back in pulled his wife to safety. Another driver also fell into the water, he didn’t die either. Sligh said that he was “glad to be here breathing”. The collapse of the bridge was the result of the truck and the trailer’s cargo, also the bridge. The load of the truck hit a support grinder and causing it to collapse. The bridge was inspected in November, but it’s not clear if the condition of the bridge played a role in the collapse. They say that if the bridge’s condition was bad then no one would be riding on it.

I think that they should think it inspected again to and figure out what really happened. I am glad that no one died in this.

Shadow Day 2013

May 7, 2013  Tagged

This is what I did on Shadow Day:

I got there. Mrs. Parks showed me around. There were about 10+ people who came into the shop (September’s Bride) as walk ins. Later in the day this one lady walked in and she was a BRIDE!! Maybe we would have someone to put the dresses in. But, she didn’t want to put them on because she had to “go somewhere”. (We would have put her in an informal dress because she didn’t like the wedding dresses/she liked the shorter dresses.) Before that I saw Joise Vandermolen, Em’s friend, she was just looking with her mom. The one appointment that came was the sister of the bride. She had to pick out the dress, shoes, veil, and all the other stuff. We had to talk about every little thing

We did a lot more than that, but I ran out of time to write it all down.

The Pearl: Reflextion

May 2, 2013  Tagged

We just finished The Pearl and here is my reflexing on it:

The parts that stood out to me was when Kino hit Juana, his wife, and when the “music of the pearl” began to merge with the “music of the enemy”.
This was significant because we learned that Kino was becoming an animal and not caring about his family. His emotions were being clouded and that made him to do things that he would not ever do. This is important because we see Kino at his worst point in the story. His greed and trying to get something was more important than what his family really needed.
I live differently because of this by thinking of others and what their benefit would be if I acted a certain way or another way.

This is from my 8th grade mind:

Creative Writing for LA+

Dear 30 year old self:

I am writing this now for something that I want you to have when you are this old. What do I want? I’ll tell you: it’s a family. A husband, kids, parents that are still living, sisters who love me. I know it’s a lot, but I’ll go in depth now.
A husband: I would like my future self to have one of these. I guy like loves me for who I am; loves me for my weird and crazy self. Someone who can make me laugh till “I feel a six pack coming on” (Teenager Post) and can make me laugh in the hardest of times. A guy that I can look back on and say that he brought out the best in me and I in him. This guy  would have to put up with my cooking, of course, but would be kind enough to tell me that it was horrible! A guy that can accept the fact that we all sin and  we should forgive and forget.
Kids: Now, (the kids kind of come with the guy…), these don’t have to be biological, but could be kids that you adopt, remember: all kids in the world should not be left behind. they could also be the kids that you would work with. They kids that you plant the seed of Christ in Sunday School or day care or school teaching or whatever you do.

What would happen if this came to be? Well, I’d be one busy person with a great life. I would have a family that cared for me and loved me no matter what I WILL do.

South Dakota School District can Now Give Guns to Teachers

A bill was proposed and passed in South Dakota giving school districts the option on letting teachers carry guns in school. The law in SD is called the “School Sentinels”. The 152 school districts can determine if they want to arm their staff or not. Schools must get approved for this from “local law enforcement officials”. Also sentinels, or someone whose job is to stand and keep watch, would have to passa program training them to carry the weapons in schools. Residents in the district can vote before this happens in their school. This came after Georgia lawmakers moved forward legislation to stop a ban on firearms in bars, churches and in college classrooms. On Thursday, in Georgia, the state House vote yes to “advance the measure to restore gun carry rights that have been chipped away over the years” said one state Rep. Some think that it will pass the Senate, but some think that it is a bad idea. This still has to go on to the state Senate before the state governor can make it a law.

I don’t like the idea of this law because we shouldn’t fight violence with violence. I have always thought as a school as safe place that you won’t get hurt in, but the thought of have guns at schools is a scary thought for everyone. It might be good, but it could also be very, very bad.
