Week #12

¡Queridos Padres!

It is amazing to be able to enjoy all the seasons that the Lord created for us, even though I don’t love the snow! Here is a note regarding the winter gear 🙂

It seems that winter weather is upon us whether we are ready for it or not!  I have to say that the children seem to be eagerly awaiting the snow and they are very excited about playing outside with friends in the snow – especially because this year they get to use the sledding hill during lunch recess!

In preparation for the cold weather and playing outside please help us with the following:

  1.  Make sure your child ALWAYS comes to school with the necessary gear to keep them warm and comfortable while outside.  There are very few times when we have inside recess during the winter time and it’s pretty miserable to be outside for 15 – 25 minutes when you’re not prepared for it.
  2. Please clearly label ALL of your child’s winter clothes with your child’s name. It’s fairly impossible for us teachers to keep track of everyone’s belongings and they get confused and end up in the wrong bags or lockers sometimes, so labeling allows us to help your child look for things if they get lost or misplaced.  So once again, please label all hats, gloves, mittens, boots, snow pants, etc. with your child’s name.
  3. Children line up snow boots outside under the bench by our classroom and wear their gym shoes inside the building.  There is no need to send an extra pair of shoes.
  4. All other snow gear goes inside of their lockers.
  5. Children DO NOT have to sled during lunch recess if they don’t want to but if they do they need to be wearing snow pants and all the necessary gear to stay warm and dry.

Also,

This week we will be working on a project in which we will use THANKSGIVING as a starting conversation that will allow us to learn/practice many important skills and integrate subject areas (Bible, Social Studies, Language Arts)
1.  We will learn/practice how to construct complete sentences with the correct use of subjects and verbs
2.  We will talk about family traditions (specifically during Thanksgiving)
3.  We will share about ALL the things that we are thankful for  not only during Thanksgiving season but all the things that we can be thankful to God for EVERY day
4.  We will learn/practice how to work together with a partner or a small group of friends /classmates (take turns sharing ideas, asking questions, etc)
5.  We will learn/practice how to present our ideas/thoughts to an audience
In order to make sure that all the students have FRESH background knowledge about what we will be talking about would you please take a few minutes to talk with your child about the following questions:
1.  What are you thankful to God for?
2.  What do you and your family do for Thanksgiving?
  • What foods do you eat?
  • Are there any family traditions that you have for Thanksgiving?  (games you play, activities you do together, etc.)
  • Where do you celebrate Thanksgiving?
  • Who usually comes to your Thanksgiving celebration?
Thank you for your help!

Grace & Peace;

Maestra Ruiz

Where can I learn more about immersion education?
In addition, to add.a.lingua’s parent site and blog which many of you have joined (http://addalingua.com/parent), the CARLA website gives a plethora of options for learning more about immersion (http://carla.umn.edu/immersion/). This is the website for the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition which is a resource for immersion educators around the world. The U.S. Department of Education funds 9 language resource centers, and this is the one that focuses on immersion education. While much of the site is geared towards professional educators, parents can also glean great research-based information and tools from the portion of this site that is directed towards parents.
Book it!
The Pizza Hut Book It reading calendar will be sent soon! Check your child’s communication folders. The program runs from October thru March.

Aalpa

The aalpa (add.a.lingua language performance assessment) is an adapted version of the ACTFL IPA (Integrated Performance Assessment), a multi-task cluster assessment across modes of communication ((ACTFL, 2014), that corresponds to the add.a.lingua L2 specific literacy frameworks and aligns to Common Core State Standards. Besides promoting instruction that helps students meet Common Core State Standards through accurate use of the immersion language, the aalpa instructional cycle organizes communicative tasks associated with goal areas outlined in World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages (ACTFL, 2014) around a common topic. The aalpa is intended to measure progress surrounding students’ ability to linguistically support Common Core State Standards (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) across modes of communication in the immersion language. In order to do so, the aalpa not only organizes learning around a common topic, it also provides an authentic instructional context through which students complete tasks that elicit target language structures based on the add.a.lingua grammar and/or word study scope and sequence. The alignment of grade level aalpas to CCSS, World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, and the add.a.lingua grammar and/or word study scope and sequence allows immersion stakeholders to inform both classroom level instruction and program level articulation.
