January 27

Dear Parents,

This past week is a fun week. We celebrated Chinese New Year with native Chinese students in Holland Christian High School on Friday. (Please check out photos at the end.) We had a fun culture-enriching time together.

As some of you might have learned from news, China is having a very serious coronavirus outbreak now. The condition is very bad. I ask for your prayers for peace and healing in China.

I have another professional training about how to teach Language Arts better this Thursday morning. Ann Hildenbrand will sub for me.

Dear Parents,

According to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, this week is our last week in 2019. This Saturday (Jan. 25) is the FIRST DAY of 2020!! I would like to say “新年快乐!” (Happy New Year!) to all of you in advance.  Chinese New Year is the biggest holiday celebrated in China. People go back home even from far away to gather with their family. We wear new clothes on the new year’s day. We visit every relative’s home and spend time with them during our two-week holiday. Food is always a major part of this holiday. In my hometown, we usually eat Xianbing (see picture below) instead of dumplings to celebrate the family reunion and new year. Oh! It does make me miss home! 🙂 Anyways, hope you will also enjoy this joyful holiday in this beautiful winter season. 🙂

Announcement:

Lunar New Year

The Lunar New Year is a very special holiday in China (and in many Asian countries). As part of our children’s education, we want to help them recognize the cultural significance of this holiday. We’ve worked hard to provide some fun opportunities that are coming up as part of your child’s regular school day.
On January 24th (the last day before the actual Lunar New Year), all of our Mandarin students will have a morning celebration. They will spend time with International Students from Holland Christian in their classrooms; they will walk over to City on a Hill to play games (as a whole program). They will hear a presentation from the Chinese International Students about what the holiday looks and feels like at home. We will conclude our time with a lunch together before walking back to Zeeland Christian.
*** If your child enjoys Chinese food (dumplings, rice, noodles, etc) he/she can skip bringing a lunch this day – food will be provided. If you anticipate that your child would feel more comfortable (or have possible allergies) with a home lunch, then please send that along. We won’t be able to accommodate hot lunch that day.
We look forward to celebrating with your children!
On Friday, January 24th, please wear RED (or some Chinese clothes) to help us ring in the Lunar New Year!
