January 13, 2020

Dear Parents,

It was so nice to be able to get back together again this past week after our Christmas break. The kids were back into the daily rhythm, and I look forward to another good week with them.

I have a professional training about how to teach Language Arts better this Thursday morning. Ann Hildenbrand will sub for me.

Announcement:

Lunar New Year

The Lunar New Year is a very special holiday in China (and in many Asian countries). As part of our children’s education, we want to help them recognize the cultural significance of this holiday. We’ve worked hard to provide some fun opportunities that are coming up as part of your child’s regular school day.
On January 24th (the last day before the actual Lunar New Year), all of our Mandarin students will have a morning celebration. They will spend time with International Students from Holland Christian in their classrooms; they will walk over to City on a Hill to play games (as a whole program). They will hear a presentation from the Chinese International Students about what the holiday looks and feels like at home. We will conclude our time with a lunch together before walking back to Zeeland Christian.
*** If your child enjoys Chinese food (dumplings, rice, noodles, etc) he/she can skip bringing a lunch this day – food will be provided. If you anticipate that your child would feel more comfortable (or have possible allergies) with a home lunch, then please send that along. We won’t be able to accommodate hot lunch that day.
We look forward to celebrating with your children!
On Friday, January 24th, please wear RED (or some Chinese clothes) to help us ring in the Lunar New Year!

Due date: Friday, January 17.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

1 Peter 2:9

然而你们是蒙拣选的族类,是君尊的祭司,是圣洁的国民,是属 神的子民,为要叫你们宣扬那召你们出黑暗入奇妙光明者的美德。

彼得前书 2:9

Reading:

I will read aloud Big Mouse, Small Cat by Rui Zhou.

Science:

We didn’t get time to see the roofs in the neighborhood last week. So this week we will do that, and talk about how peaked roofs of the most houses are better than flat roofs because of rain and snow conditions.

Students will construct a model roof that will be able to keep a home dry during a rain. Students might need to bring materials from home to build this model roof.

2nd Grade Social Studies:

Unit 3: How do Citizens Live Together?

Lesson #6: What Do Core Democratic Values Have to do with Government?
