Nov. 25, 2019

Dear parents,

Happy Thanksgiving week! I pray that each family is able to have a blessed and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday with family and those you love.

This blog covers this short, two-day week as well as the following week.

I’m part of school’s PBIS team. PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and SupportsOur team is learning how to build positive environment in school. At the same time, we are designing plans to build positive environment at ZCS. We have a series of professional training sessions. I had attended two whole-day professional trainings in this year’s September and October. (This is the reason why I have had so many PD days.) This Tuesday I will have another PBIS PD day. Lynn TenHarmsel who is a native Mandarin speaker will cover for me. Also, I have two other PBIS PD days coming in spring as well.

I appreciate your prayers last week. It carries both the students and me. Please continue to keep us in prayer!

What a surprise to have a snow day last Tuesday. I’m sure your children were surprised as well.

This coming Tuesday, upon kids’ request, we are going to make it a hurt/pajama day. Your kids can dress up as being hurt or wear pajama or do both or do nothing special. Their choice.

Reader’s Theatre: One Potato, Two Potato

Dear parents,

Your kids have done a GREAT job with the Reader’s Theatre! They have put great effort into this, and lots of them even memorized their part. They are great!

We recorded two groups’ reader’s theatre this afternoon. We will record the last group’s next week, due to the absence of a member of that group.

This is our first time doing this. Please forgive us for some technical imperfections. Because of the lighting, you could not see the picture that they have made on the screen clearly. So I have scanned each group’s picture. Also, the video is not very clear, due to the low computer camera pixel. Sorry about that! Maybe next time, we can give you a nicer treat.

Anyway, here are their video-recordings and pictures.

Dear parents,

Thank you so much for your active participation for the drawing game! Your kids are such good teachers, and you are such good students. I have received lots of good audios and fun videos. To tell you one important truth, your kids’ word recognition test scores are very high this week. I think this game contributes to the high scores. Please keep up this fun game with your kids.

Your kids will be coming home with a paper copy of their report card on Tuesday. We would like to encourage you to take some time to look them over. The format of the report is new. Therefore, please do not hesitate to let us know if you have any questions as you look it over.

November 4, 2019

Dear parents,

We had a wonderful Grandparents’ /Grandfriends’ Day last Friday. Many thanks to our room moms Abby and Dana, who greatly helped make that day a success. The grandparents are wonderful, and the love flowing through the classroom and hallways is a testament to God’s faithfulness to the generations.  ( Please click “continue reading” at the bottom for pictures.)

One of the beautiful stories during our Grandparents’ Day is that Soren’s grandma count from one to ten in Mandarin for us. I have to say Soren is a good teacher and his grandma is a very good student. And I know all the kids in my classroom are good teachers. They are just not given the chance to do that. So here comes my game of kids being a teacher. Every week, your kid may go home and teach any people (mom, dad, siblings, friends, etc. ) who is not in our Mandarin program a new flashcard word that he/she learns that week. The person who is being taught needs to send an audio of he/she saying the word in Mandarin and making a sentence (that has a combination of Mandarin and English). (A very easy audio recording app is quicktime player. ) For example, Mark teaches dad a new word 到达 (to arrive), its meaning and how to make a sentence. Dad needs to record an audio, saying, “到达, I 到达 Florida.” And then send it to me. This will get your kid’s name in a drawing for a prize. If dad says the whole sentence all in Mandarin, e.g. ” 我到达弗罗里达“, then your kids’ name will get entered an additional time. Your kids can also teach a younger sibling who is in our Mandarin program. Then, the younger sibling needs to say the the whole sentence all in Mandarin, in order to get your kid’s name entered for just one time. I hope this can create more Mandarin interactions between parents and kids. And, of course, it helps practice their weekly words.

Thank you for your generosity! I have received lots of wipes and some games. Thank you very much! If you happen to be able to donate more games, please send them to our classroom. Kids can’t have too many games. 🙂

I don’t know how to start telling you this news… I’m pregnant. I’m 16 weeks on my pregnancy. My due date is April 20. I will tell this news to the kids tomorrow, so please don’t tell them yet. 🙂

Reader’s Theatre and Writing

This week, I’m going to launch a reader’s theatre with the kids. The reader’s theater script is an adaptation of the beginning part of Cynthia DeFlice’s One Potato, Two Potato. Here is the English script.one_potato__two_potato I translate it into Mandarin. Here is the Mandarin script. 读者剧场-一个土豆,两个土豆I’ve also recorded audios of this story (please see below). Students will learn to read their own part fluently, and then their group can do the reader’s theater together. I will let them know their part in school. If they can practice their part at home, that would be great. Hopefully, it will be a fun and enriching learning experience.

As the reader’s theatre script is only the beginning part of a whole story, students are going to write their own follow-up stories. So please don’t show your kids what the following part of the book is. I want them to use their own imagination and make their own stories.
