Outsiders Essay

I think that the book is very detailed and has a good theme. The theme is Stay Gold. Stay Gold means to stay young and stay a kid. I think this is a good theme for this book and movie because as kids, you have a lot of fun. You also have a lot to live for. Stay gold is a good theme to live by if you are a kid because you want to stay young as long as possible because it won’t last long.

In quite a few cases the book and movie are the same, such as when Bob gets killed, Dally gets killed, visiting Johnny in the hospital, and a few more. The actors perfected quite a few scenes including when Bob gets killed. The book and the movie are almost exactly the same in showing all the detail. When Dally got killed, the book said that he was shot by policeman after he pulled out his gun at them. The movie showed exactly what happened and did it in pretty good graphics. It seemed realistic. Also, when they visited Johnny in the hospital, they showed exactly what I pictured Johnny like. He was burned badly around the neck and all down the body. He passed out and even showed him getting the book “Gone with the Wind” from Ponyboy and Two-Bit.

A bunch of scenes in this movie didn’t show what the book said. For example, the book says that Darry slaps Ponyboy then Ponyboy runs away from the house into the park. But according to the movie, it shows Darry pushing Ponyboy, not slapping him. I think that is a huge detail miss. Another example is at the rumble, the book told about many more details about the rumble. The book tells about how Ponyboy got tackled and beat up pretty badly but in the movie, they don’t show much of Ponyboy getting beat up and the movie also doesn’t mention the guy with the pipe at the rumble.

I agreed for the most part because the actors did a good job besides the few things I said in the last paragraph. The director could’ve done better. The first half of the book was crammed into 20 minutes of the movie. The other half took almost an hour and a half. I think he should’ve evened it out more because it felt the movie was only about half of the book. Also, some of the scenes just didn’t look realistic. At the rumble, you could easily tell that they weren’t really hitting each other and you could see it was fake. I think they should’ve done it better in the sense of being more realistic and more thought out. It should’ve been thought out because some of the scenes looked like they were quickly thrown together. Example, the rumble was an important part of the book and took a while. In the movie, the rumble only took a few minutes. I think they should’ve extended it a bit and made it more detailed.

I really liked the book for a few reasons. One, it had a lot of detail and told the story in good detail and explained things well. Two, it had a good theme and plot. The author, S.E. Hinton, came up with a good theme of Stay gold and also the story was great. It was very planned out and detailed, really enjoyed it.
