Immigrating to America

My name is Destiny. I was named that because when I was born, my parents wanted a better Destiny, a better future. I am from Graz,Austria, but moving on the U.S.S. Maine to America. We moved because papa couldn’t find any jobs. Graz was pretty crowded. Papa told us that Maine, where we would live, would have more jobs. The trip so far is horrible.I can’t even tell how many days we have been on here. I don’t have any friends, and I think I might throw up.Suddenly,“LAND HO, LAND HO!” Shouted someone on deck. I ran to go get mama and papa. We all celebrated because we could see, in the midst of the fog, Ellis Island, our first step to a good life! But Mama and Papa are not very good celebrators. Since I am an only child, I have no one to celebrate with. We slowly got off the U.S.S. Maine and headed into the immigration station. It was smelly in there and very crowded. We were told by a conductor to put our stuff in a small room. Papa told them where we we’re going to live in German but the conductor did not understand. We had to show him a map of America. Then the conductor said that he would put our stuff there. Then we had to climb a long flight of stairs. There we’re doctors watching us all the way up. I was scared. I held mama’s hand. Then we got to a big room labeled “Registration Room” I can read it because it was written in many languages, including German. It was a very long wait. The family behind us was just like ours.It had a girl about my age. I asked mama if I could say Hi and she said yes. I went up to the pretty girl and said hi slowly in German. “No need to say it slowly, I am from Vienna, and I speak German too.” The girl said. “My name is Destiny and I am from Graz, and I will live in Maine, where will you live?” I said. “My name is Belle. I will live in Maine too!” Belle said. I could tell that we we’re going to be best friends. “Do you want to be my friend? I don’t have any!” I said. “Ok!” I told mama and papa about my new friend, Belle and they said that it was great, but it was our turn to answer questions. The man with a mustache asked Papa about Austria, Maine, Me, Mama, And the U.S.S. Maine. Finally we were allowed to move on to a man in a doctors suit. He pulled Papa into a dark room.He came out a few minutes later saying to mama “You have to go in next, but don’t be afraid, he just checks you to make sure no contagious diseases get into Maine.” So mama came in and came out a few minutes later.“Now it’s your turn.” So I went into the bright room where a doctor told me to sit down on a small table. He did lots of things to make sure I was healthy. One of them was taking a button hook and flipping my eyelid open. “AUTSCH!” I said. That is German for Ouch! It really hurt. Then I was asked a few questions like “Have you ever had diseases such as Trachoma or Lice?” I said no.”What is your full name?” I said Destiny Grace Bieler. Then I was allowed to go out.Mama and Papa we’re waiting for me. And so was Belle! Apparently her papa and my mama we’re sister and brother! Belle is my cousin! I was so excited to live and travel with her! After that we got on another boat and went to Maine. My life was perfect after that. Papa got a job, Mama had Baby Viktoria, And Belle and I were best friends! And it never would have been the same without Ellis Island.

  1. Grace, good work incorporating details that we learned during our Virtual Field Trip to Ellis Island, like the button hook and being from Austria. I loved hearing you read your story aloud!
